Garrett's Mom Cafe

devatakicave.jpg
Devataki cave, Bulgaria

Cute little cave-swimmer.

I think that the idea with this road, which forces you into lane-changes into oncoming traffic through tight turns, is to give everyone a good turning radius, but this still seems crazy to me.

Platypus! Apparently a baby platypus is called a "puggle," which I'm surprised isn't more widely publicized.

Claustrophobia alert.

Aww, poor little fox wants to steal a fish.

This striped cuckoo's dance moves are fiyah.

The Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland, whose 72 waterfalls inspired Tolkein's Rivendell. The other landmark inspiring Rivendell? Garrett's Mom.

I cannot figure out what this guy is doing to achieve this ghost-walking effect, so I will assume it's CGI. I will also assume that I could do it, if I felt like it.

A train-themed restaurant where your drinks and food are delivered by, yes, model trains.

The maned wolf or "golden dog" of South America. What it looks like is a sexier hyena.

Eclipse at sunset. Like all eclipses, it is disappointing.

Volcanic smoke-ring.

Today in 1996, Tomb Raider was released, in which Laura Croft searches for treasures inside Garrett's Mom.

There's a man on the wing.

As I always say: Nature is weird and gross.

Two fragments of an enormous statue have been unearthed at the Temple of Hercules in Amman, Jordan. The temple dates back to around 160 CE, to the time when Amman was part of the Roman Empire.

Dubbed the Hand of Hercules, this fragment, along with an elbow, are the only pieces yet discovered of a massive marble statue. Based on the size of its fingers, the statue may have towered as high as 40ft (12m).

70 I know many here are not fans of Ann Coulter, but give credit where credit is due, excerpt from her lates column : "In last week’s column, we noted the popularity of Hamas terrorists with BLM representatives. This week, we’ll consider the other main contingent of Hamas Boosters: foreigners, who, for reasons I can’t understand, are in my country.

In the past few weeks, Muslims and Arabs have poured into the streets in nearly every U.S. city to celebrate the slaughter of Israelis, while wearing scarves, keffiyehs and other clown outfits, waving the flags of Palestine, Egypt, Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco, Yemen, Turkey, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Nigeria, and on and on.

It’s so obvious that these people don’t belong here that the immediate reaction of a number of politicians was to demand that their visas be revoked. (Nobody looked at anti-war protests in the ’60s and said, Revoke their visas!)

Question: Why are we importing millions of people from lesser cultures who will inevitably despise and resent the West for its very success?.." and so on and so on. Clown outfits. This woman deserves a Pulitzer. Or whatever they bestow on writers.

Six years after authorities found a World War II-era arsenal, including a 1943 40-ton tank called the "Panther of Heikendorf" and an 88 mm anti-aircraft cannon, in the cellar of resident in the northern town of Heikendorf, the individual received a suspended prison sentence of 14 months.

This is one of the most expensive silent movie stunts of all time.

This shot from Buster Keaton's "The General" (1926) cost $42,000 (equal to $600,000 today). The production company left the wreckage of the train in the Row River, south of Cottage Grove in Oregon. The site became a tourist attraction until 1944 when the wreckage was finally salvaged and scrapped during World War II.

"The General" went way over budget, costing $750,000 (equal to $11 million today) in total. Some of the unforeseen costs included "Keaton being knocked unconscious; an assistant director being shot in the face with a blank cartridge; a train wheel running over a brakeman's foot, resulting in a $2,900 lawsuit; and the train's wood-burning engine causing numerous fires. The fires often spread to forests and farmers' haystacks, which cost the production $25 per burnt stack."

Posted by: andycanuck (krqg6) at October 25, 2023 08:10 PM (krqg6)

109 In the end, the film only made $500,000 at the box office and was panned by film critics. Despite failing financially and losing his artistic independence, Keaton considered "The General" to be his crowning achievement. "I was more proud of that picture than any picture I ever made," he said.

Today, "The General" is regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. Roger Ebert gave the film 4 stars and listed it on his top 10 in 2002. He had this to say about Buster Keaton: "Today I look at Keaton's works more often than any other silent films. They have such a graceful perfection, such a meshing of story, character, and episode, that they unfold like music. Although they're filled with gags, you can rarely catch Keaton writing a scene around a gag; instead, the laughs emerge from the situation... And in an age when special effects were in their infancy, and a 'stunt' often meant actually doing on the screen what you appeared to be doing, Keaton was ambitious and fearless. He had a house collapse around him. He swung over a waterfall to rescue a woman he loved. He fell from trains. And always he did it in character, playing a solemn and thoughtful man who trusts in his own ingenu

112 And not even the good John Wayne movies, like the one where we could pretend Sulu wasn't gay while he blew up the Cong that infiltrated the wire before The Duke led the counter-strike force and then named it Provo's Privy at the end.

No, Peggy would click the easy button - about as often as she'd click the tap on whatever box of wine wasn't empty yet - while dreaming about Jimmie Cooper giving John Wayne the what for. You know, while Jimmie was bumbling and stumbling all over himself, right before we cut scene and suddenly those law books meant something rather than Lee Marvin beating his ass outside a saloon.

Peggy invented the opposite of today's up-talk. Because no flowery tart, even today, wants to sound like she'd deep sucked two packs of Winstons before sounding as stupid as Peggy Noonan. If my beagle could recite old Reagan speeches - he'd sound like Peggy. If he were gay.

The photo of Elephanta is actually that of the Kailasa Temple at Ellora (not real close to Mumbai), an impressive building, as it and the galleries surrounding its courtyard are all of the same 1 piece of basalt. The builders simply removed all rock from the basalt flow that was NOT the temple and galleries. I saw it many years ago,, when I was 10, along with other Hindu temples beside it, the Jain temples, to the temple's right, and the Buddhist temples on the left.

Elephanta really is a cave that was carved into a temple. The central figure is a giant sculpture, maybe 11 feet tall, of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. I've been here too, same age.

Today was the second day, the first day being not-relevant testimony by SEVEN witnesses. Today was the County Manager, saying the biotch was playing games with coming up with her health department budget, and going to the press claiming she was but out of the process.
Also, the biotch was the final witness - her opportunity to defend herself.

Each side then summarized, and the County Board had some discussion, took care of minor unrelated business (appointing a Dem and GOP to two vacant board of canvasser seats), heard some public comments, and RECESSED until Monday at 8a.

I'm pretty sure her ass is gone Monday.

He took offense and shot her in the back of the head through the seat rest, then directed the driver to a secluded spot where he raped him in the ass.

358 The dehumanization of individuals and the carelessness with which human life is taken during incidents of gun violence stand in direct violation of these affirmations of our tradition. We are called upon to take action to prevent the loss of lives and end gun violence.
The Tikkun Olam Council has decided to join the following project because it aligns with our Jewish values and Bet Ha’am’s mission of reducing violence in the world:
The Maine Gun Safety Coalition is a grassroots organization founded in 2000 to protect Maine families and communities from gun violence. They educate parents, administrators and the public about issues relating to gun safety, voice the concerns of their constituents to elected officials about gun legislation and provide free trigger locks to prevent the accidental discharge of weapons by children and unlicensed individuals.

The Maine Gun Safety Coalition is starting a project called Show Up Network (SUN). They have rightly concluded that the only way to get gun safety legislation passed in Maine is to make sure legislators hear from gun safety constituents in the same large numbers that the gun lobby is able to mobilize.

C'mon, it was kindergarten. The wonders of ribs for her pleasure didn't start until 11th grade.

It was problematic. I'll probably just walk away - I could ask the sellers to repair or drop the price, but if they drop the price then I'm stuck having to arrange all that, and I honestly don't think I can manage it even if $$ is not an issue.

I got a lot of good advice and I'll sleep/pray on it and check with my realtor in the morning.

I hate making decisions like this, especially without Jesse to swear at contractors.

Between Knopfler at #96 and Wata at #92.

I actually own albums by Satch, Dire Straits, and Boris, and I think Rolling Stone wore out several dartboards making this list.

I don't know, would have to ask for more time to get estimates. Just not sure it's worth the hassle. I have zero competence in this area and no confidence in my ability to make decisions.
