Health NEWZZZZ

I understand where vegetarians are coming from, as far as not wanting to consume cute little animals.

But... it's just not healthy to eat a diet without meat.

Cremieux
@cremieuxrecueil

To date, there's only been one large study of the effects of a vegetarian diet on the sex ratio of newborns, and it was consistent with vegetarian mothers suffering from malnutrition.

vegetarianmalnutrition.jpg

The paper found that vegetarian women gave birth to fewer boys than women with a normal non-vegan died did. The authors believe that this may be the result of more spontaneous abortions -- miscarriages -- affecting more male fetuses than female ones.

This is not a great advertisement for the nutritional bounty of a vegan diet.

The paper is linked in this tweet.

Scientific American: We reject scientific rigor in favor of Liberal Ways of Knowing.

Scientific American, which dates to 1845 and touts itself as "the oldest continuously published magazine in the United States," recently ran an article arguing that scientists should prioritize "reality" over scientific "rigor." What would make a publication with a name like this one set empirical evidence at odds with reality? Masks, of course.

Naomi Oreskes, a Harvard professor of the history of science, argued that by "prioritizing scientific rigor" in its mask studies, the Cochrane Library may have "misled the public," such that "the average person could be confused" about the efficacy of masks. Oreskes criticized Cochrane for its "standard . . . methodological procedures," as Cochrane bases its "findings on randomized controlled trials, often called the 'gold standard' of scientific evidence." Since RCTs haven't shown that masks work, she writes, "[i]t's time those standard procedures were changed."

City Journal contributing editor John Tierney called Cochrane "the world's largest and most respected organization for evaluating health interventions." A recent Cochrane review found that "[w]earing masks in the community probably makes little or no difference to the outcome of influenza-like illness (ILI)/COVID-19 like illness"--or "to the outcome of laboratory-confirmed influenza/SARS-CoV-2"--"compared to not wearing masks." The review also found that "use of a N95/P2 respirators compared to medical/surgical masks probably makes little or no difference" for the "outcome of laboratory‐confirmed influenza infection."

While Oreskes asserts that Cochrane's findings were made with "low to moderate" certainty, each of the findings quoted above was made with "moderate certainty," the second-highest of four certainty classifications. "Moderate certainty," Cochrane notes, means that "the true effect is likely to be close to the estimate of the effect." The Cochrane review's lead author, Oxford's Tom Jefferson, said of masks in a subsequent interview with Australian investigative journalist Maryanne Demasi, "There is just no evidence that they make any difference. Full stop."

In response, Oreskes claimed that "[t]he Cochrane finding was not that masking didn't work but that scientists lacked sufficient evidence of sufficient quality to conclude that they worked." She continues, "Jefferson erased that distinction, in effect arguing that because the authors couldn't prove that masks did work, one could say that they didn't work. That's just wrong." But Jefferson didn't simply say that masks don't work; he said there's "no evidence" they work. The burden of proof should be on the side of those advocating a medical intervention. Without remotely having met that burden, Oreskes asserts that masks do work. Cochrane, she writes, "gave the false impression that masking didn't help."

In fact, 16 RCTs have tested whether masks effectively reduce the spread of viruses. Not one has found compelling evidence that they do. Two have found statistically significant evidence that masks are counterproductive--that they increase the spread of viruses--probably because masks are frequently moist or dirty, and people often touch them.

...

Surgical masks were designed to protect patients from having open wounds infected by medical personnel, not to prevent the spread of viruses.

...

Oreskes argues that "Cochrane has made this mistake"--the mistake of basing its findings on medical evidence--"before." In 2011, a Cochrane review found little evidence that flossing prevents gum disease. Subsequently, the Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services struck flossing from their joint dietary guidelines. The Associated Press then reviewed 25 medical studies and came to the same conclusion as Cochrane. According to the New York Times, "the American Academy of Periodontology acknowledged that most of the current evidence fell short," in part because researchers hadn't been able to "examine gum health over a significant amount of time."

Oreskes cites the lack of strong medical evidence supporting flossing to suggest that if one believes in flossing, one must also believe in masks.

If you believe in one thing the science does not support, you must believe in all things that the science doesn't support.

Also, Cochrane actually found that flossing does work, when combined with toothbrushing.

...

In a way, Oreskes has provided a public service with her article, as has Scientific American in running it. The article makes clear how willing mask advocates are to sacrifice scientific objectivity on the altar of their newfound religion.

America saw its highest levels of suicide, ever, in 2022.

Let's Go Brandon!

The number of suicides in the United States has hit a record high, new provisional federal data shows.

In 2022, an estimated 49,449 people died by suicide, which is 3% higher than the 48,183 people who died in 2021, according to a report published early Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics.

The suicide rate increased by 1% in 2022 to 14.3 deaths per 100,000 from 14.1 per 100,000 in 2021, marking this as the highest rate seen since 1941, according to the report.

The authors said when the final data for 2022 is collected, they expect the number of suicides to likely be higher as additional death certificates with pending causes of death are ruled as deaths by suicide.

Adding to the nation's levels of depression and anxiety? Higher "education."

Used to be, college was the best time of someone's life.

Not any longer!

Depression and anxiety rates higher among college students than their peers, new study suggests

Experts discuss what can be done to 'remove barriers' and boost college students' mental health

By Melissa Rudy

College students may be at a greater risk of experiencing depression and anxiety compared to young people who are not in higher education, according to a new study published in The Lancet Public Health.

Researchers from University College London analyzed data from two studies.

...

Based on multiple surveys the young people completed about their mental health, there was a small, elevated risk for depression and anxiety among the students compared to the non-students. There was an approximate 6% difference in risk between the two groups.

A Millennial woman claims she's invented a new health practice: Walking in silence so that one can hear one's own thoughts.

What an innovation!

Looking in a mirror the wrong way can cause a miscarriage of a boy. That's why a healthy society has a 105:100 ratio. Boys just don't survive the womb as easily as girls. Agreed. The Scientific Method has survived as a very, very useful way to investigate the laws of nature.

If you wish to get rid of it, you will have to develop a competing method that produces better results.

There's a substream of videos of leftists trying to show off their vegetarian pets like dogs.

I remember one where she was very vocal about how her dog hated meat, and she proved it by putting out a bowl of greens and then opened a can of dog food with meat in it. As she's explaining how the dog doesn't want the meat, the dog is leaping over her to get the meat.

It's almost like leftists believe things that are provably false about the real world and are easily manipulated into stupid things that go against basic common sense.

You can wipe your ass with this study. Tiny sample size and overwhelmingly one racial demographic. What about age?

I suspect this is the kind of study where correlation doesn't equal causation. I'll almost guarantee you that these white vegetarians were the typical older, mentally-ill, hysterical Karens and virtue-signalers that defile every fucking thing they touch. Is is a surprise they also suck at birthing? They would suck even if they were not vegetarian.

Don't get me wrong: I have little doubt a vegetarian diet is not healthy. I just don't think this study means diddly squat.

110 I used to work in an office with a bunch of 'health nuts.' A couple vegetarians and the rest only ate 'organic' or whatever they felt was healthy. They convinced a younger woman to become a vegetarian. She caved into the peer pressure and did. Slowly she started to look more and more sickly. She became pale, her hair thinned and got stringy.

Then she started to have real health issues. Bad enough to put her out of work for weeks at a time.

After a couple months of this she was too sick to continue working and went home to Canada. I've no idea whatever happened after that. But the transformation of this girl over 6 - 7 months was dramatic.

Men have more lean muscle than wimmins and they have more fat to create. But I don't see vegetarianism as being much help there (or worse yet veganism). Generic plant stuff has even less fat than lean meat. Probably women could use fattier cuts than men for optimal results. More whole milk or cheeses?

It's been proposed to fortify bread and other foods with iron to make sure women get enough of it.

The problem is that men can easily suffer from iron overload, which promotes bacterial growth, which is often iron-limited (because sequestering iron in, e.g., transferrin is one physiological mechanism for keeping the iron activity in the blood low).

Mr. Turtle would also go down stairs and watch TV.

222 Oreskes cites the lack of strong medical evidence supporting flossing to suggest that if one believes in flossing, one must also believe in masks.

The flossing argument drives me nuts.

First, it is expensive and time-consuming to generate valid statistical analyses when it comes to efficacy and side effects. That's part of the reason pharma development is so costly. There's no financial incentive for a far less profitable endeavor like flossing to produce that kind of data about efficacy. And it would like take a huge amount of data of questionable rigor, given that it would be self-reported, to detect any correlations between flossing and better health outcomes.

Second, flossing is purely voluntary. If you don't think it's effective, you can just abstain. Mask wearing was compulsory. If someone wants to force you to do something, they should need some proof that voluntary activity obviously doesn't require.

Third, there are common sense reasons to floss, like getting stuff out of your teeth that is uncomfortable and produces bad breath. Even without hard data, flossing demonstrably does something. The same isn't true of masks.

A weekly 1000 mg per ML of B12 injected IM would do the trick.

You used to be able to get injectable B12 without a prescription for about 20 bucks per 30ML but then someone in big healthcare got pissed that they were getting cut out and they made it by prescription only and you have to now show a need or they won't prescribe it to you.

Of course you can go to a wellness center and pay 50 bucks a pop for it.

This is not a great advertisement for the nutritional bounty of a vegan diet.

Word is recently that the reduce sodium thing is another food lie, but yes there is a ton of sodium in processed soups.

Make your own, and you can get reduced sodium broths or cut it with water and its pretty easy to do and you can freeze it forever. You can cut into the blandness with peppery tastes, or salt to taste at the table. You just need a medium sized pot and a stove, and it can be done by an inattentive lax cook like me.

Posted by: kallisto

Yes. More indepth:
They cannot really protect themselves from predators. At least not the newborns. Standard breeds, (not the miniature boutique breeds), are not pets. The cost associated with raising them for slaughter is a hair above break even, so if you are willing to spend $1k a year just to raise them for yard art. Add in the cost of land needed for them to live and graze, that you can't do anything else with while they are living on it.

Yeah. It they weren't being raised for slaughter, they would go extinct. Unlike milk cows, goas, & sheep. At least you can get something else from them besides meat.

362 Healing is much more than taking medicine and waiting to get better. It's an entire process you have to manage and it starts with attitude. Diet, is key and that diet should be based on maximizing the foods and nutrients you need to target your specific illness. I've found nutrients from foods work much better then trying to get them though a vitamin. Exercise is also key, and that too should be tailored to your condition and what you need to improve. It also doesn't need to be a marathon or Olympic weightlifting session. It needs to be the right amount for you and your specific situation. Above everything, you need to be dedicated and committed. You need to have a never quit attitude along with hard, but achievable goals. I will tell you that first and foremost prayer and meditation have been the absolute most important ingredients that pulls it all together, provides perspective, and yes, drives your healing process.

a friend is a personal trainer. She's 58, but to see her on the beach one would easily mistake her for a woman 30 years younger. She told me it's better to do something, anything, than nothing at all. This was after I told her I'd lost so much strength and couldn't lift 45 lbs on the pulldown lat machine anymore.

He was pretty good eventually at not dashing out if I had a reason to not let him out. He would even go out before eating dinner.

439 Farmers in California go on a wild hog killing frenzy once or twice a year to protect their crops. The smaller hogs show up on the menu in a lot of places. I've had it a few times. Not too bad... sort a cross between ham and a porkchop in taste.

The boring part for me right now is the route I take in my neighborhood. I stay with the lit avenue; the side streets, though residential and kinda suburban, are dark and the surfaces are broken and cracked. I'm liable to twist an ankle, unless I bring a flashlight.

You won't be in the clear until after the 3rd day. The funny thing is it seems like a new burn will take away from the old one. If your arms and chest hurt, you'll barely notice your legs.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at December 01, 2023 04:29 PM (J2vNu)

You can buy stock, or make it yourself out of bones and scraps of a cooked chicken carcass. You just need a bigger pot. Stock in stores is fine, and you can buy reduced sodium to lower the baseline. Adding your own meat, bits picked off a chicken, or cut your own veggies just adds to the quality. You can by gelatin powder to thicken your soup too.

Soups and stews are the traditional meal stretcher and its all pretty easy work, just need some bigger pots if you are mass producing it rather than meal to meal.

Cook it all night.
