Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Penny tdao.jpg

Hi there . . .long time lurker, posted maybe a dozen times in ten years. My daughter's been pushing me to send you pics of her favorite dog in the whole world, and here she is! Penny is our new (and first) dog, a wonderful 5 year old doodle of some sort. We adopted her from a rescue recently and she's been wonderful but definitely a surprise. She is tremendously gentle and even tolerates baths and nail clipping (yay! not). She doesn't like treats (except fresh meat) or dry food (no, no, no) and we're afraid she's never learned how to play. She loves her walks but is still very shy around strangers (but not other dogs). She stays with Mama and Baba until lights go out and then she goes to the daughter's room to guard her through the night. GOOD PENNY!

What a beautiful dog. And a GOOD GIRL.

Jake, taking it easy. Old dogs love naps!

Notsothoreau

Awww, Jake. Enjoy those naps.

From the Niece Network:

Kali is not amused with her new bat wings.

Much to the disappointment of her Halloween-loving hooman.

Also from the Niece Network, Ebby was a Good Girl traveling all the way from South Carolina to Arizona, where she remains the best friend of a little boy.

Love the pets today. I may have imagined it, but there may have been a disappearing PetMoron email. "The other side of . . . . " Is this October or something???

7 Kali with her bat wings, and the pale sandy cat in the "booked up with naps" meme, are both spectacular.

La Petite Dagny La Siberienne is due for her rabies shot and her locator chip; and a local branch of the SPCA is having a special of both for $20 on 11/4, so we'll be there. Big black Stirling has both of his. That cost me quite a bit more than $20 at the vet, lemmetellya.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at October 21, 2023 03:35 PM (omVj0)

8 I've got to nip out to the local library branch for that renters' rights meeting. Dunno if it'll be of any value; we'll see. In the meantime, big Stirling is up here on the couch with me, and Dagny is napping under the bed. Not frightened of anything, just doing some private time, I guess.

12 "Strangle the parrot" is an English idiom. It means "to consume alcoholic beverages, often to excess."

In the Georgette Heyer regency books "to shoot the cat" is an idiom meaning to vomit. Also "cast up his accounts" but that's not pet related.

17 Sister has a designer Aussie-doodle, a smart son of a gun, and he watches TV with the family, with a pretty good idea of what's going on. Just the occasional head tilt for dialogue, but when humans run or fight he gets up, sometimes growls a little. Just watches cats. If a dog appears on screen, he whimpers "Let that dog out of there!" And once in a great while, something like a goat or calf will fool him into sympathizing, and then we rib him about that.

If something gets thrown in frame and the ball/thing/person disappears from view, he will do a quick romp to that end of the set to make sure something isn't in his space.

He gets plenty of play and exercise, but he just kept getting fatter, and I finally figured out why. My stepdaughter gets up and six and feeds him, unbeknownst to me. Then I get up at 0630, and feed him again. Then she gets home at four and feeds him, and I get off at six and feed him.

Greedy bastard was getting four meals a day, til about two weeks ago.

I loved meeting Jake at the MoMe in Yakima. He's a great boy. I was very tempted to bring him home with me.

Side note: I feed the local birds around here. Great fun to watch them.
A friend in CO told me about some suet balls he puts out for his. Suet, peanut butter, seed and chili powder. The birds love it but the squirrels, will run across the yard rubbing their faces in the grass to try and escape the powder. They avoid the suet now.

43 Kitty Della has gained 3 pounds since January, and the vet says she's got to be put on a diet (slow weight loss is essential for a cat). She can't reach her own bum, so we got her a so-called "sanitary shave" back there.

She was pretty traumatized by having to do to the vet twice in a week (the second time was for a more comprehensive shave). And she is pretty pissed off at having her Fancy Feast cut back.

So she's been slowly tearing bits out of my foam kitchen mats in protest. They look like hell and will be worse over time. Popcorn-sized pieces everywhere.

I'll defer getting new ones until this has passed.

50 Winston,

You are on my short list if I am unable to take care of Jake. He is such a good boy and I just worry about him. He got to go to the vets yesterday as Trouble took a swing at him. Couldn't tell if he'd been clawed in the eye but turned out to be a miss. Trouble actually likes him and will try to rub against him. But the big brown cat was in sight and Trouble was keyed up. Back to normal today.

"Good trade!"

Gardening crossover: Several years ago, in a sharp winter, deer were stripping the bark off my fruit trees. I mixed [cheap] vegetable oil with [the cheapest] hot sauce, and sprayed the branches and trunks, and that worked. It's funny that some whole species of animals will avoid something, instead of being back and forth picky like we are. Cinnamon is that way, too -- but at these prices, who can use it?

57 Its fall here. Tux has decided he needs wet food pretty often. In the summer he hardly asked for any and if he did ask he wouldn't eat the 2nd half of the can. I buy the small cans and even so only 1/2 a can will be consumed so I save the second half for the next day. Toby loves it when Tux leaves him a lot of the wet food but I don't want the dog getting too much super rich cat food.

67 My new black tom, Magic, was 17 lbs when I got him from the shelter. He is not so much fat as he is a really big cat and had been an indoor cat who did nothing but eat.

I got him in for a vet appointment and he had lost a pound in a couple of weeks, not from anything I have been doing, just he has been allowed to go outside and do something more interesting that sitting around waiting for the next meal.
I think he has dropped another pound or so.

He is two years old, and a surrender to the shelter. My other cats are all in their teens, I think around 14 or so, and it is different having a kitty who gets zoomies again.

69 The Kid has a system of bird feeders set out, mostly for finches and sparrows, those tube types where you can block off the holes. She likes to wait until all the gangs have established hierarchy and turf, then move the feeders around and change the dispenser patterns. This leads to huge commotions/bird riots as especially the sparrows have to fight it out all over again. She finds this highly amusing...
Also, the commotions/bird riots have attracted Our Local Sheriff, the Cooper's Hawk, which says, "Mmmm, yummy, fat little sparrows!"

Posted by: LenNeal at October 21, 2023 05:33 PM (/BBNv)

70 Also with the feeders, The Kid puts at least one right out in the open where the Cooper's Hawk can easily see it, and then the sparrows have to cool it on the West Side Story business and furtively dart in and out, once they know The Sheriff will eat them if they get careless...

The Old Cat doesn't care about all this pandemonium but the New Cat is a huge fan, it makes for great Window TV. She raptly watches every episode.
