Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat? Bacon?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Meet Quimera, the cat with two faces. It's not uncommon for cats to have different colored eyes. But Quimera not only has different eyes but a perfectly-split fur color pattern, making her look like different kitties fused into one. Quimera lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina with her owner. She has quite a following online . . Like her fellow two-faced stars like Venus and Narnia, Quimera is thought to be a chimera cat, a cat with two sets of DNA due to two embryos fusing together.

Quimera has fans all over the world. People have made tributes, like portraits and even tattoos.

Chiweenie,Rudy and his big sister Peekaboo.

They sure look like best friends. Sometimes it's a little bit disconcerting when a cat is bigger than a dog. They seem to handle it well.

Gunner je.jpg

From Jewells:

This is Gunner. He is 9 years old and was an owner surrender. He is the sweetest boy. The first time I met him he just cowered in his kennel until we coaxed him out. I can only imagine his confusion and sadness. He doesn't understand why his world turned upside down. This picture is of him with his head resting on my knee. He spent the entire time outside like this. Would not leave my side. He's gotten a little better and seems to be adjusting.

Awww. Thanks for taking care of Gunner.

Our official Swiss Guide Dog, Gioia, has had a rough patch with her health lately, but she has recovered enough to go on another little trip and show us some Swiss cows in October. Want some fondue?

10 Thanks, jewells, for the story of Gunner. "He doesn't understand why his world turned upside down."

That's precisely the phrase that the president of the rescue where we got our Luna said about her. (Her owners surrendered her at age 4 because, basically, she'd become inconvenient. Grr.) She is the best dog ever and people immediately fall in love with her because she's so happy and affectionate. She's also beautiful and smart.

I hope Gunner's second chapter turns out as well as Luna's has.

I doubt most of these half and half cats are truly chimeras, but even so this is odd because black cats don't have blue eyes. Eye color is linked to fur color and blue comes when the color in the eye region is white or a modified albino like Siamese and Himalayan. Lighter furs tend to have green eyes, then yellow and copper for dark colors like black.

Whiskers in cats is like this too, but the "ink' often gets overwhelmed and white whiskers result. As I said above eye color and hair color in cats are linked, as is deafness in white cats with blue eyes.

16 Some colorful turtles in the eastern U.S. We have ornate box turtles around here and I've seen one snapping turtle in 20+ years. It was crossing a paved road and I stopped and was going to carry it across to keep it safe. It was snapping as I approached and I decided it could fend for itself, I wasn't going to get close enough for it to snap one of my hands.

Posted by: PaleRider at October 14, 2023 03:39 PM (3cGpq)

17 We had a feral cat with fur sort of like Quimera's - but just in the face. Someone shot her with a BB gun, and we had to have her eye removed. But she still looked striking. Could only pick her up when she was in trouble - stuck in a fence, injured, etc.

She was always getting into trouble. So was one of her babies, who regularly took off, too. Baby was born on neighbor's patio and we had her for a few years, when she stayed home. They both disappeared, at different times.

23 Good afternoon everyone. As is usual for me on Friday night, I slept on the back couch beneath the open window to the backyard waiting for Prettygirl to return. At about 2:00 a.m. I heard a rumble along the back fence and then the "bang" of a 10# cat jumping through the back window and onto my belly (ouch). Gave her some scritches, closed the window, and then went to my regular bed (followed by said kitteh).

Quimera - it's two! two! two cats in one! …two sets of DNA due to two embryos fusing together I'm trying to wrap my mind around how that works, exactly. Used to call Charlie the yellow and Ony the black our Hallowe'en cats. With Quimera you get them in one package!

30 I'm a little concerned about my 10 month old puppy Charlie right now. He seemed fine up until an hour ago, when I gave him a treat for sitting so still while I brushed him (a rarity). He did his usual hilarious routine when he gets treats - tosses them in the air and then pounces on them and bats them around a little before he eats - but the treat wasn't eaten. That is unheard of. Then he didn't follow me upstairs, but sat that the foot of the steps and whimpered. Again, not usual behavior. I sat with him and petted him for a while and he was very quiet, not his usual frisky self. I put him in his kennel, thinking he might just need a nap, but he's lying there looking at me with eyes open.

Now I'm being paranoid - both my sister and I are on various cancer meds these days and I'm freaking out wondering if he found one on the floor - or even a Vitamin. He's only 11 pounds! It wouldn't take much for him to OD or something. I hope I've overreacting.

35 I've basically adopted a neighbor's dog here at the new house. He really belongs to the elderly lady that owns the house, but she went to long-term care and her son's ex now lives in the house, which I understand fulfills some sort of alimony requirement. Ex doesn't care about the dog and has tried to give him to other neighbors prior to my arrival. When I moved in, he was roaming the neighborhood, skinny and flea infested, subsisting mostly on whatever handouts he could get. I'll try to remember to send in a pic.

36 Afternoon, pet folk! A handsome set of "animules" today, as Cajun comic Justin Wilson used to say. Louis's big black-and-white cat looks much like my late Chekov.

My two thuglets are doing well. Baby Dagny the Siberian has taken to napping with me, at least at the start, on Saturday and Sunday afternoons -- curling right up against me on the bed. And it's hardly cold here by any measure. I often find Stirling up there with us when I wake up, though not today.

Sometimes my cats have slow days, think of it as a cold or upset stomach or low fever. If it isn't clearing up in a day though a vet visit should be done.

39 I've known a couple of cats whose world had turned upside down. Angelique the pointed Siberian had either fled her home, or been dumped from it, when she found me in an empty parking lot one Saturday morning. We ran an ad in the paper, but no response, so she became Linda's cat. Wolf, my late black longhair, was left behind when his so-called humans got evicted, and was going door to door for handouts when I took him in.

I presume Stirling's world, and that of Dagny, both got disrupted when I adopted them, but they'd been raised at a shelter and her loving breeder respectively. So it wasn't as if they'd been abandoned. Still, it must have been a bit of a shock to come home with me suddenly one day. They both took to me, so it was not a terrible wrench.

43 Years ago there was this big (almost 15#) gray/black tabby who used to wander my block. He was extremely friendly to humans, quite talkative, incredibly smart, and would go up to particular houses on my street, knock on the door, be let in and hang out. I became part of his route and enjoyed his presence so much when he retired, he retired to me. (Sadly, he also enjoyed hanging out under cars parked on the street and developed aggressive cancer from the chemicals.) (con't)

44 🐕
Our Daisy the overly-affectionate Belgian Malinois got a slight gash on her toe last week, so we haven't been letting her do her usual mad ball-chasing and free-running, just some walks ("sniffari" someone called it) with the old man. Which means she was about to explode with pent-up energy. Seems to be healing nicely. Finally got a little fetch in yesterday. Happy pup. Re last week's question about favorite toy, anything that squeaks is fun for her, but nothing beats a thrown tennis ball.

She's been a real nuisance today, though, from the time she nuzzled me out of bed at first glimmer of sunrise. High demand dog with low-energy people. I need to go play with her and get her ya-yas out, as we say. Not looking forward to confining winter days.

Switched her food last week, and she seems to be eating with more relish (so to speak).

Ony the cat says, hey! I'm cute. I'm cuddly and affectionate. I tolerate the dog. Talk about me more!

Its probably something less of a jar for a kitten because in nature once weaned the cat has to find its own range to hunt in and the mom no longer wants to feed them, so while moving to a new area is initially scary its natural for them to learn the risks of an area and the benefits of where the food is.

46 Wow, when was the last time I was around for a pet thread?

Our dog had to have a skin tag on her foreleg removed this afternoon which she'd been chawing on and licking to the point where we thought she was going to get down to the bone.

The Cone of Shame is awaiting her return home. There will be much pointing and laughing. (WITH her, not AT her - of course!)

47 When I would come home at night from out, Toonses would often be waiting under a car or in some bushes for me, and then run over to me yapping like Dino from the Flintstones. One very late night as I walked up to my house, there were about a half dozen cats in my front yard. Upon my approach, all but one fled. The one that didn't was Toonses, and he yapped away at me then followed me in the house. He was awesome. I miss him a lot. There's now an even bigger dude out back who comes to visit every so often, but he's quite feral and while he'll eat out of my hand, he won't let me pet him. Given how big his fangs are, I'm not going to push it.

48 I hope everybody who could see the eclipse, even partially, did so. My major memory of a partial eclipse comes from May of 1984, when my then wife, then cat Arizona the big red tabby, and I lived in a house across from a newly opened park. That day I was home when the partial eclipse began. Everything got dim and cool (well, for May), the birds stopped chirping . . . and Arizona, then a year old, freaked out. He ran from one window to the next and back to the first, chirping himself, and looking at me frantically. ("You're in charge of weather! Fix this!")

I remember a partial, I think in Chicago where walking under light trees you could see little fat crescents in the lights and shadows under the trees as the leaves made little pinhole cameras to create images of the sun.

I can imagine that - cats depend on knowing everything that has or can go on in their little world. That's why even moving the furniture is both interesting and alarming.

50 Cats do adapt well to people who feed, care for, and love them. They deserve a better reputation. My ex's cat, Maceo ("MAYseeoh"), a rescue cat who had mast cell cancer and had to have most of his tail amputated from trauma, enjoys car rides and often sits in my lap while I drive. He's so inquisitive - look at that! and that! Then when he's had enough, he clambers into his carry cage which we bring with us. (Obv. I get along with my ex.) If I get another cat (Prettygirl is only about 6), it's going to be an orange dude. They're just awesome.

51 I set up the two big Amazon boxes for Mr. Trouble a couple of weeks ago. One is ine the yard, next to the covered porch area. He likes to hang out there so the neighbor dog won't see him. The other is in the covered area. I took one of the carpet runners out there, so it goes over the concrete and into the box. Troubles was like King of the Road about it, "I got a box with a rug!"

It was really windy so i took an old blanket out and put it across the back and sides, with a bit covering the front. He was convinced it is a trap. So I need to rework the box. I have some thin foam sheets I can put in for insulation. He's back to sleeping under the house for now.

62 Donna ampersand--

FWIW when we'd only had Luna for a while she ate a bug. I eventually figured out it was an Asian lady beetle. They aren't poisonous but are caustic and basically burn the dog's esophagus going down. She was immediately distressed and didn't eat for the rest of that day and the next morning. I was REALLY scared, being a first-time dog mom.

But all of the stuff I saw online said that unless you saw something really serious wait for 24 hours before getting worried. And in about 24 hours she was right as rain again.
