Two of my daughters went to Petra about a year and a quarter ago, and said it was almost deserted, and yes, magnificent. They saw pictures of what it was like before Covid, and it was so crowded you saw little but the backs of other people's heads. The locals, who depend on tourist dollars to feed their extended families, were crying the blues.

When I was a kid we had a mutt and a Golden. One day they were out in my grandparent's fenced garden and I was in the living room watching them. I saw the mutt jump on the fence gate latch to open the gate and then held the gate open until the Golden got out. She was a very smart girl. Here's a readable-to-all Nitter thread version of the Petra Xtweet. There are a couple of [probably cut & paste] descriptions of the site on the first page.
https://tinyurl.com/nhjdfmmn The Greek name Petra (“Rock” probably replaced the biblical name Sela. Remains from the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods have been discovered at Petra, and Edomites are known to have occupied the area about 1200 BCE. Centuries later the Nabataeans, an Arab tribe, occupied it and made it the capital of their kingdom. In 312 BCE the region was attacked by Seleucid forces, who failed to seize the city. Under Nabataean rule, Petra prospered as a centre of the spice trade that involved such disparate realms as China, Egypt, Greece, and India, and the city’s population swelled to between 10,000 and 30,000. ------------ Petra, often referred to as the "Rose City," is indeed a mysterious and awe-inspiring ancient city located in the heart of the desert in present-day Jordan. Here's a combination of its history and intriguing facts: [list of 10 follows] Posted by: andycanuck (krqg6) at September 28, 2023 08:14 PM (krqg6) 99

No idea why cows (and bulls) dodge white lines, but another strange thing -
Those of us out west are familiar with cattle guards; a row of rails across a road as a continuation of fencing to stop cattle from crossing. The top of the rails are at road level with a shallow trench under them. The cattle are afraid of getting their legs stuck. Here's the good part. After the cattle has been exposed to cattle guards, painting a series of white lines on the road imitating the steel rails works just as well. Herod Antipas was a 1st-century ruler of Galilee and Perea, a client state of the Roman Empire. He is known for his role in the executions of John the Baptist and Jesus of Nazareth, his divorce of Herodias, and his war with Nabatea. He was a son of Herod the Great and a grandson of Antipater the Idumaean.

WaPo Traitor Phillip Bum defends the ChiComs.
"Criticizing China’s communism is by no means new in American politics, of course. But this phrasing, the “CCP” iteration of that criticism, seems to be in vogue at the moment. How did that happen?" - Yeah, a little genocide, concentration camps, slave labor, unleashing a pandemic, what's not to like? 275 Mohammed was born in Mecca. His family, the Quraish clan, was a big deal there. Which is why he got away with what he did.

Bit mundane and typical to be made up without a founding warlord I think. No need for the Sunni, Shia split without him. 272 It’s my understanding that Mohammed initially intended Jerusalem as his holy city.
Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at September 28, 2023 09:57 PM (xTRSc) It would explain why the dome of the Rock was such a big deal. Btw, all indications are it was initially a Byzantine Basillica built on the site of the old Temple, and the Moslems just repurposed it. Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead! at September 28, 2023 10:02 PM (eYoxG) I am thinking most of this was made up, retconned if you will, by the muzzie leadership about a century or so after the fact. They may have built a legend around an actual person, but nearly all the "facts" about mohammed are found in the koran or the hadiths. For somebody as influential, for good or ill, as him to be completely absent from Roman, or Greek, or Persian records of the day is very, very fishy. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 28, 2023 10:06 PM (0Rysx) 292

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 28, 2023 10:06 PM (0Rysx) I believe that their was a general revolt in the middle east and northern Africa against Byzantine/Orthodox control, triggered by the disastrous Byzantine-Persian War which destroyed the militaries and economies of both combatants. After about a century of chaos, I believe a new, powerful rising Arab Dynasty retconned the whole thing to justify their newly created Caliphate. And the Byzantines went along with that because it was better than admitting it all happened because of their misrule. Posted by: Tom Servo at September 28, 2023 10:10 PM (S6gqv) 295

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 28, 2023 10:06 PM (0Rysx) The Sunni/Shia split is over an unclear succession of power going to relatives of his, so I think the original charismatic warlord/religious leader must have existed. By their own accounts the scale of his battles weren't very large and he may have been lobbed in with other minor Arab raiders. 291 AOP, I don’t think so. Most religious leaders start out small, and therefore obscure. And Arabia, despite its vast deserts, was a cultural backwater. I believe the violarer-of-9-year-olds was a real person who only got praised later by his benighted followers.
