32 The Roaring Forties is a 1908 oil painting by Frederick Judd Waugh. The painting depicts a turbulent seascape in the Roaring Forties, the part of the Southern Hemispheric Ocean between the latitudes of 40 and 50 degrees famed for its dangerous storms. Along with Wild Weather, the work is one of two seascape paintings by Waugh on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Agreed. The artist may be depicting the terrifying storms of the South Pacific, but it would be nice to see something else in the picture to give it more contrast and context. As it is, for all we know we are looking a zoomed in version of the artist's bathtub drain when he's done with his bath.

The "Marine Biologist" episode. George is telling a girl he is a marine biologist, which he isn't, and walking on the beach they encounter a beached whale. And someone calls for a marine biologist. In the final scene, George is sitting with Jerry and the others in the coffee shop, telling the story. "The sea was angry that day, my friends . . . like an old man trying to send back soup at a deli."

The amazing thing is that all four characters are seated, which usually decreases the energy level of a speaker. But George dominates that scene and makes it work.

The 13th century prince Llywelyn was very fond of hunting. His favourite hound was called Gelert who had been given to him by the English King John.

One day, the prince and his princess set out for a day’s hunting together, leaving their baby in the safe care of Gelert. On returning home they were horrified to discover the baby was missing and Gelert’s muzzle was covered in blood. Llywelyn immediately drew his sword and killed his favourite hound. As Gelert fell to the ground a baby’s cry was heard from a dark corner of the room.

Llywellyn discovered his heir was lying safe. But, by the baby’s side lay a mighty wolf, which had been killed by Gelert. The protective hound had killed the wolf to defend the baby but had then died by his master’s sword.

96 Dazzling!

Camouflage Service
In 1918, Waugh was recommended to serve as a camouflage artist (or camoufleur) for the U.S. Navy, as a member of the Design Section of its marine camouflage unit.[9][10] That section was located in Washington, D.C., and was headed by American painter Everett L. Warner.[11]

According to a biography of Waugh, “Many large ships, including the Leviathan, were painted according to his designs. Though the enterprise was of course a team effort in which no man played a solo part, he had every reason to be proud of his record. Only one ship with his system of camouflage was lost during the war”.

111 The Republican debate, summarized by a Lefty Lunatic.

Republican debate winners and losers ... but mostly losers. Last time, I argued it was a mistake for Trump to miss the debate, giving his field of competitors a chance to get some attention. This time, it was absolutely the right call.

Not only was the pro-Ukraine commercial a great advertisement, but moderators mimicked its talking points in questions..all supported Ukraine except tech bro Vivek Ramaswamy, who clung to pro-Putin talking points.

It’s rote to blame moderators for shitty debates, but this time, they actually had great questions, and even the occasional follow-up.

The audience were bored to tears. Maybe they didn’t hear enough about Hunter Biden? They did liven up when DeSantis bragged about his fascist book-burning crusade in Florida.

The breakout surprise of the first debate, Haley was godawful in the second debate. She did try to do “policy,” at one point, which may have been her biggest mistake of the night. No one cares about policy in the Republican Party.

112 The 13th century prince Llywelyn was very fond of hunting.

140 "I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by;
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying."

Beautiful use of a limited palette to capture the cold power and majesty of the ocean. The subtle blending of sky and water increases the vastness that men must face when dealing with the seas. Very effective.

148 Apropos of absolutely nothing…

Last night I was surfing some U-Toob and randomly a video popped up of Regis and Kelly on Sept 11. I clicked on on it and it was surreal. The show was taped live in NY at 9:00. The first plane hit at 8:48. And this was pre smart phones and everyone instantly knowing everything. So the hosts tell the audience right as the show starts that a plane has hit one of the towers. Mind you this is 14 minutes after it happened and the audience had no idea. And they’re all like whoa. But then Regis goes hope everyone is OK now back to the show. He assumed it was just a small plane that accidentally crashed. Then a few minutes later the second plane hits and Kelly is about to faint. They cut to commercial.

It was trippy watching that. Drawing back into that time and realizing how different our world was. We take instant info on demand for granted today. But just 22 years ago people were in the dark for the most part.

As were Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton! I asked at both museums (and there was a genuine art scholar at Benton's place in KC); there is no well-known masters study of the role of dazzle commissions as a common factor in the careers of these important artists.

It seems a bigger stopping-off point for some pretty radical artists of US XX Cent. than the famous art shows and schools. FWIW, they were all fully trained painters before their camo experience. Learning cubism from combat would be just too good a story.

There is a great big hole in our Art Studies curriculum, here.

To live in Texas is to live surrounded by guns.

Each morning, people strap guns inside suits, boots, bras and bellyband holsters that render them invisible. They stash firearms in purses and tool boxes and even take guns to protests at the state Capitol.

Yep. It was like a bad marriage, and the feds decided that it was better to kill the spouse than to let him go make his dumb decisions alone because there was a chance he'd be happy and successful.

And here we are again, except the cancer is down to the very localized city level, and society believes we're supposed to be one big United State and not 50 united states so there's no way to resolve it by moving to another state. The government set individuals up to be much worse off than if they'd followed the constitution to begin with.

Seems familiar for some reason.

285 A comment on a comment on the morning thread. A lawsuit in state trial/superior court will never end up in federal district court unless pursuant to removal jurisdiction (i.e., federal claim or complete diversity). Lawsuits with judgments that violate constitutional provisions are supposed to exhaust state appeals and then you petition the U.S. Supreme Court for certiorari. (Good luck but my old firm did manage that.) You don't run across the street to the federal district court. (Rooker-Feldman doctrine)

That was being litigated pretty seriously at the time. There were two abolitionlist camps, one saw the constitution as invalid and wrong because it allowed slavery, the other, that included Spooner and Douglass, noted that the term "slavery" appears no where in the documents, and that to twist the language cruely to force that meaning was as wrong as slavery itself.

Success on the other hand brings the grifters, sharks, con men (and con women), snakes, backstabbers, credit-stealers, exploiters, and outright thieves.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that the focus was to be on slavery and not on freedom, and on purpose for this type of long-term societal outcome.

Not exactly slavery, but not good.

John Dewey - the father of American public education as it exists today - sought to use the school system to create compliant industrial automata to go work in America's factories and push the industrial engine along. Education as such was not his goal, nor was thinking, nor was philosophy, etc.

We are still digesting Dewey's bitter fruit.

If she was arrested for simply livestreaming, that is very bad.

If she was actually looting, then okay, nail her.

If she was 'inciting' them to riot, that is problematic.

And? The point is that conservatives as a whole long ago gave up on the abolition of no-fault divorce (something that they once were quite vocal about). Like everything else, conservatives have made their peace with virtually all of liberalism predating the 1980s. Now, criticizing the divorced is just gauche, unthinkable, even though most Christian denominations historically took a pretty dim view of it to say the least. Conservatives can wrap their mind around dissolution of bows made before God, but for some reason me wanting to leave a political arrangement I never vowed to remain in till death do us part is wrong, immoral even. It's all a load of nonsense.
