Ah, the "mainstream" media, reporting things everyone already knows, two and a half years late.

When are you going to break the big story about the Basement Strategy of 2020, Axios? 2044?

Their changed headline called this the White House's "secret" strategy.

President Biden and his campaign are working on a critical project for his re-election bid: Make sure he doesn't trip.
Driving the news: As voters express deep concerns about the 80-year-old president's age and fitness for office, Biden's team is taking extra steps to prevent him from stumbling in public -- as he did in June, when he tripped over a sandbag at the Air Force Academy.
With a physical therapist, Biden has been doing exercises to improve his balance as far back as November 2021.
Since his stumble in June, he has been wearing tennis shoes more often to avoid slipping -- and using the short stairs on Air Force One, entering the plane on a lower deck than before.
Why it matters: Democrats, including some in the administration, are terrified that Biden will have a bad fall -- with a nightmare scenario of it happening in the weeks before the November 2024 election.

Medicare and Medicaid are the more immediate concerns, absolutely.

That said -- social security is a real problem. It's a pyramid scheme that requires exponential growth of the work force to pay current benefits for current retirees.

The entire "trust fund" of banked up money is all t-bills. And of course, the US government doesn't have hundreds of billions in cash waiting around when SSA starts cashing in those t-bills.

They'll have to sell public t-bills to finance it.

Social Security will be "fine" until it isn't, and spectacularly collapses.

It should make you think he can't do the job. Elderly people are usually frail. They don't bounce back. Falls are *bad* and can trigger rapid decline. If he falls a lot - even in a parallel universe where he's mentally competent - then that is high-risk and needs to be dealt with. Walkers and wheelchairs exist for a reason, "optics" be damned.

On the latter, she isn't exactly wrong. Social Security is not in crisis yet and is actually salvageable. Except that she doesn't know that - she's just vomiting out talking points - and so gets no credit. She also failed to mention - and again, probably doesn't know - that the *real* crisis is in Medicare.

Yes, it's a Ponzi scheme, but it can be saved without bankrupting the country by changing that. First, raise the taxes for it by a bit to stave off crisis.

Next, control spending. Restrict and means-test benefits for people under 40 (yeah, they get fucked - but that's true anyway and it's unavoidable). Raise the retirement age at all steps by two years for people under 45 or 50 (yeah, they get fucked). Possibly means test it for those over the age of 40 on an ongoing basis (maybe for those with more than some amount of regular retirement income from other sources).

It cannot be done without pissing a lot of people off, but that has also always been true. But it could be done without bankrupting the federal government.

Medicare cannot be fixed, which is why it won't be. It will either be the bomb that blows up the government or there will be other means to address that particular problem.

In talking with LIVs one of the real issues in getting them to understand is that there is virtually an unlimited desire for "free" healthcare. It's already welfare by another name. Legally, anyway. Social Security *is* a welfare program. They pretend it isn't with the annuity-style statements, etc., but that doesn't change the underlying legal reality. Politically, yes, saving Social Security is suicide. Mechanically, it's entirely possible - including a gradually ratcheting retirement age pinned to live expectancy (which will do a lot).

Medicare could not be saved the same way, because there is no limit to demand for it and no other way to provide the service.

The fundamental problem is that it relies on payroll taxes from people currently working, to give paychecks to people who are either disabled or elderly and are no longer working.

Even if you increase the payroll taxes going in, and kick out a bunch of people getting paid out, the fundamental design of the system is still unsustainable.

Any "solution" like that just pisses off a lot of people and kicks the can down the road a bit.

You need to maintain a stable ratio of people in the work force to retirees in order for it to be "sustainable."

But that is not possible. Government cannot (directly) control birth rates and death rates.

Not much. The underlying problem with Medicare - besides its tax rate, which has *never* been adequate - is the costs associated with the medical system overall. Medicare was a bad program from a fiscal standpoint, but it is also the largest victim of the out-of-control (from a cost standpoint) medical system - a system that was, of course, directly enabled and partially created by government.

It depends on who you are. Disability fraud is rampant, and the best way to do it is to be on welfare. If you are, your state will probably pay a "navigator" to help you commit disability fraud.

Welfare programs are, at least in part state-funded. Disability is federal. Every single person a state can move off the welfare rolls and onto the disability rolls is a net savings for the state.

If you're actually disabled and not on welfare, then yeah - it is often a nightmare. If you have your state batting for you, though, it helps clear the way.

One thing that I have learned via my parents and inlaws is that you will be denied treatment in this country after 90 yo. Even if you are paying. At least for surgeries. You won't be able to find a doctor willing to do them.
