The Morning Report — 9/21/23

garlandschultz.jpg

Good morning, kids. So, Merrick Garland got grilled in hearings yesterday over both his aiding and abetting in the coverup of the investigation of Hunter Biden, which ultimately leads to his father as well as the prosecution and persecution of political enemies ranging from ordinary citizens all the way up to the former President of the former United States.

For whatever definition of the term "grilling" applies, since in real terms, he knows that he will suffer no real consequences just as the scum illegitimate, in political and familial terms, "first family" that he has aided and abetted won't either. A few weeks (if that) at Club Fed for Hunter ending in an early release and Biden being forced to resign for medical reasons notwithstanding. The estimable Miranda Devine weighs in on the proceedings:

You would think that an attorney general who has presided over the embarrassing debacle of the Hunter Biden investigation would express contrition, or maybe a little anger at the underlings who have shamed him, when he is hauled before a congressional committee to explain his failures.

But alas, Merrick Garland is just another Mr. Magoo. His department is ablaze but he knows nothing. The nation’s chief law enforcement officer has no special insight into the malfeasance unfolding under his nose.  He is just an oblivious bystander, unperturbed by the tyrannical turn the DOJ has taken under his leadership, persecuting his boss’ political enemies and coddling the crooked president’s crooked relatives.

Even though Garland used to be a judge, he makes no judgments at all. He professes to have no view about US Attorney David Weiss’ farcical five-year “investigation” of the president’s 53-year-old son, Hunter.

“I promised the Senate that I would not interfere,” he told the House Judiciary Committee Wednesday.

“I have not intruded or attempted to evaluate that, because that was the promise I made to the Senate.” What an honorable man, keeping his promises.

But he’s the ship’s captain. There is a fire in the hold, the vessel is going down, and he doesn’t even trouble himself to find out what happened.

“Have you had personal contact with anyone at FBI Headquarters about the Hunter Biden investigation?” asked Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La).

For what seemed like an eternity but was really about seven seconds, Garland looked down at his tightly clasped hands, slowly turned his head left and right as if the answer might materialize somewhere on the empty table below him, then popped his tongue, said “ahhhh,” pursed his lips, exhaled and arranged the edges of his mouth in a downward shrug, before finally looking up at Johnson with a sheepish expression and stammering: “I don’t real . . . I don’t . . . ah . . . I don’t recollect the answer to that question but the FBI works for the Justice Department?” a non sequitur delivered in a cascade of upward inflections as if he was the one asking questions, or maybe channeling a Valley Girl.

Speaking of which, his favorite line was to point out that Weiss, whom he has elevated to special counsel despite manifest failures, was a “Trump appointee.” He said so nine times.  He seems to think that bias can be ascribed to prosecutors depending on which party appoints them. Presumably he applies that logic to himself, as a Biden appointee.

Usually smart people find it tedious to say the same thing nine times in a row, but Garland seemed to enjoy it, until the wonderful Liz Cheney-slayer Harriet Hageman (R-Wyo.) wiped the smirk off his face.

“Mr. Garland, one of the things you have done and repeated over and over and over again is to point out that Mr. Weiss was appointed as US attorney by President Trump, as though that somehow inoculates him from criticism by us. Is that really how this game is played, that if someone is appointed by a Republican, then they’re supposed to be on the Republican team, or if they’re appointed by a Democrat, they’re on the Democrat team? You were appointed by Mr. Biden, weren’t you? Are you on the Democrat team?”

Touché. He never said it again. . .

The highlight of the hearings came from Rep. Victoria Spartz, herself a victim of totalitarian Leftism, who lit into this smug bastard, which Ace had last night and I'm linking here, and also in Devine's essay:

. . . “You had a very moving statement about your grandparents coming here from Belarus to live in the
country without fear of persecution,” she said. “I grew up in a very similar country, Ukraine now, and when I came here as a young person, I believed in the value as an American not to be afraid of my government . . . Are you aware that a lot of Americans are now afraid of being prosecuted by your department? Are you aware of that?“

Garland started whining about “constant attacks on the department,” but she interrupted.

“Not attacks . . . a lot of good Americans from my district came here [on Jan. 6] because they are sick and tired of this government not serving them. They came with strollers and the kids, and there was a chaotic situation because the proper security wasn’t provided. [And then] FBI agents showed up to people’s houses. You have in my district in my town, FBI phone numbers all over [saying] please call [and inform on people].

“People are truly afraid. This is a big problem when people are afraid of their own government . . .

“It’s like KGB.”

Does Garland understand that rogue prosecutors and disproportionately harsh J6 prosecutions are destroying trust in the justice system, as murderers and shoplifters get off easy, and a spirit of lawlessness and corruption infects the land?

No. There was not a sign that his conscience was troubled.

Bravo, Rep Spartz. She totally gets it. Yet, I can't understand how the usually spot-on Devine just doesn't. Or doesn't seem to, to cut her some slack. The nub of her essay is that Merrick Garland is some sort of clueless, incompetent boob, myopically stumbling around like Mr. Magoo (a descriptor that she herself uses here) unaware of what his underlings at the DOJ are up to.

These are not rogue prosecutors. The entire Department of Justice from the janitor and toilet attendants all the way on up are operating either enthusiastically or begrudgingly so as to protect their jobs and pensions (if not their own personal safety; and that is not a stretch to consider), on the basis that what they are doing to enemies of this Junta is standard operating procedure. They are operating with the full knowledge, consent and under the orders of the Attorney General of the United States, Merrick Garland, who operates with the full knowledge, approval and directives of the Vegetable-in-Chief in the Oval Office, and ultimately his minders somewhere in Kalorama, Davos/Brussels and Beijing.

Rep. Troy Nehls has outright said to Garland's face he should be impeached. He also told galactic-sized mass of rancid corned beef and lipids Jerry Nadler to STFD and STFU. In any case, so, Garland's impeached. We get who to replace him? Kristen Clarke, the head of the Civil Rights Division who is about as strident and virulent a racist and anti-constitutionalist as you can find? Or keep going back in the other direction to the aforementioned toilet attendant and you get for all intents and purposes a Garland clone to one degree or another. Same deal with any and every other agency, bureau and department in that town.

At the end of the day, none of this matters, at least in the short term. Even if these revelations, filtered as they no doubt will be by the propaganda house organs, do get between the ears of the uninformed low-info crowd and it does manage to affect the elections – assuming their votes can combine with ours to overcome the expected repeat of the cheat of 2020 – another term of Trump, DeSantis, Ramaswamy or even zombie Augusto Pinochet will not be able to effectively overcome the system that is now firmly cemented in place: The Leviathan.

For that, a revolution will be required. Hopefully, it's as peaceful with as little if any bloodshed as possible. Likely it will not be, just as the outcome is very much in doubt. Still, even these hearings are crucial if for no other reason than to get things out in the open and on the record.

They say that collapse happens gradually, then all at once. Perhaps it can apply politically as well.

I view most everything the government does as an intrusion on my freedom. The agenda is not hidden to those who see what is going on though. Too many are blind to it because they want that protection and fairness the State falsely offers. Freedom is way down their list of things they really want.

Probably in part a rhetorical ploy. Let the attack itself do the wounding, rather than bluster and bombast. Establish that he is not the good guy, and then let momentum and preference cascade establish that he is the bad guy.

Does it work? Maybe. It's a century long war of memes and perceptions. One soundbite isn't going to vanquish any monsters. But every little pebble adds to the weight of the pile, and it'll stay on the pile easier if you gently place it there, rather than throwing it a hard as you can.

Posted by: Warai-otoko at September 21, 2023 07:54 AM (9UlRk)

23 That article from I&I about Florida's Surgeon General is one of the most far-left pieces I've ever read, and lets me know that the guy they're attacking is one of the best officials in the State of Florida right now.

A quote from the article, as to why they say he is "deranged" and must be immediately replaced: "Ladapo has long questioned the safety of COVID vaccines, and early in the pandemic joined a petition opposing the Food and Drug Administration’s rapid Emergency Use Authorizations of the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines."

It then goes on to promote the idea of the Great New Wave of Covid that will mandate vaccines for everyone. They're worried that Ladapo might try to stand in their way.

28 If Garland was to get impeached I doubt it matters who replaces him. As was illustrated with the FBI on J6 the entire Justice Department is rouge and doesn't need direction from the top to go off and do stupid shit. (This is true elsewhere in FedGov too.)

The people at the DoJ are the problem not just the leadership. If the FBI can't keep track of the number of agents and CI's it's got running amok at the Capitol, some apparently of their on volition, replacing Garland isn't going to make a bit of difference.

Yes, I think he does. Failing trust is either a goal (which I doubt) or an acceptable price to be paid. You can't finish the transition into totalitarianism while maintaining trust. The two are mutually exclusive. Eventually, all that groundwork that the Long Marchers have spent a couple of generations laying must result in either transition to total control or failure of the March.

We entered that transition period with the 2016 election, and we're now past the knee of the curve on it. Trust cannot be maintained, and so its sacrifice is just the cost of doing business. They all know it and the smarter of them - Garland among them - also know that it will make things more difficult. That is what it is. The costs must be borne. If achieving their dictatorship means people don't trust them anymore, then so be it.

Impeach him then arrest him for treason. His incompetence has lead to the incarceration of 100's of Americans, violating their CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS.

But alas, nothing will happen. We're f*cked.

61 The idea that Merrick Garland is Mr Magoo is...well...stupid.

He clearly was enjoying himself during the questioning. Most of the time he wore a weaselly, little smirk on his face.

The rogue DOJ and FBI persecution of American citizens, the Hunter and Joe Bribery foofaraw are his revenge for being denied a Supreme Court seat.

He's laughing his ass off behind that smirk and why not? He's won, after all. He's in a position of power, abusing it, and pissing all over the Republicans, and will never ever be held to account for it. I'm surprised he didn't moon the investigative committee while he was at it.

The only thing this shows is:
1) that Merrick Garland would've made the wise Latina look like a genius of Constitutional law. So, denial of the SC seat was a great choice.

2) the Republicans are ineffectual, limp dickweeds because they gave someone who was clearly unfit for any substantiative gov't position control of the DOJ. They should be ashamed.

Posted by: naturalfake at September 21, 2023 08:12 AM (QzZeQ)

62 These are not rogue prosecutors.

Indeed. Just like how if you support immigration controls, reduced government scope, individual rights and liberties, economic sanity, etc., you are not a Republican. The GOP does not support any of those things. The big state Uniparty denizens of that corrupt party are not the RINOs - *you* are the RINO if you believe those things but still call yourself a Republican.

These are not "rogues" or imposters.

Which is why I don't care about the presidential election, and don't really care about Congress. The federal government is beyond reform and so the presidency is a false prize. A strong president opposed to Leviathan can achieve some things - Trump showed that - but he will nonetheless, on balance, fail. Trump showed that, too.

States are where the action is. Laying the groundwork for nullification and having them force the issue. War is an alternative, too, of course - but that's a bad choice if it can be avoided while achieving an acceptable outcome. That is why I prefer strong state-driven nullification. That can lead to war (and sometimes does) but it is the only option I see that has war only as a *possible* (even likely) outcome as opposed to the only outcome.

It's why John Q. Sack, formerly known as John Cusack, rings hollow with his blasting of the Democrats. Oh, he's absolutely on target. But his knee-jerk need to rip Trump and his supporters as braindead psycho Nazis is sheer cognitive dissonance.

By ripping the Dems as he did, he would have to ergo retract all his previous criticisms of conservatives and Trump. That would have been way too psychologically jarring. It would be tacit admission that his worldview was completely wrong.

And that is just a bridge too far for way too many Lefties. It's why I admire folks like Davids Horowitz and Mamet.

There is going to have go be a complete economic collapse of the dollar, along with Argentina style 150% per year inflation before there will be enough anger, even in a resistant state like Texas, for this to be a viable option. As the recent contretemps with Ken Paxton shows, even Texas is still far too divided politically for the kind of unified action it would take to directly take on the Fed Gov. 110 For that, a revolution will be required. Hopefully, it's as peaceful with as little if any bloodshed as possible. Likely it will not be, just as the outcome is very much in doubt.

Revolution/civil war is the least likely of the three outcomes. If people aren't shooting already, I don't know what could provoke them to start. At the end of the day, the "Don't Tread on Me" side is full of sound and fury but signifies nothing.

The second least likely outcome is national divorce; which would resolve everything very peacefully. I doubt the Oligarch class would allow it to happen, though.

The most likely outcome is Leviathan collapses in a black hole of debt; perhaps pushed by the BRICS replacing the dollar with a new trading currency. The dollar goes from being worth a dollar to being worth nothing. The Rick Sanchez scenario.

The burning times will be rough; less so for those who put aside some food and ammo, and learned a practical skill.

120 If you accept and assert who Garland really is and the reality of the evil in and behind him, the challenge to do something about it becomes morally ineluctable and, for Republicans, unbearable. The condemnation falls equally on them for their inaction. This is why they always fall short, and why you hear things like Garland is "Mr. Magoo" -- incompetence is more easily written off than evil, the moral and civic burden to actually do something about it lightens.

The worst the Left gets, the more Republicans engage in a kind of weird theater of sound, fury and dither.

And the Left seems to know this very well.

I agree open rebellion/civil war is extremely unlikely. Nothing is impossible, but I don't think it will happen.

Post-consolidation collapse after overextension and loss of international positions is a more likely possibility, I think, but more in the middle of the pack. Nullification resulting in breakup or reform is also a possibility, but I put it even lower (though it is my preferred outcome). I think coup d'etat is more likely than either (though I have no clue as to who - but the conditions are increasingly appropriate for a coup), or post-consolidation degradation that avoids collapse for a goodly while, which is what I think is most likely.

30 or so more years. Then, when the post-Zoomers reach adulthood and have no respect for anything or anyone and have little to lose but a future to gain, they revolt. Until then, grinding decline.

133 Revolution/civil war is the least likely of the three outcomes. If people aren't shooting already, I don't know what could provoke them to start. At the end of the day, the "Don't Tread on Me" side is full of sound and fury but signifies nothing.

We are too old as a people for a revolution; tell people you're cutting off social security, medicare, and welfare, and more than 50% of the population immediately folds and promises to obey, no matter what.

But I agree that a black hole of economic collapse looms more closely every day, and it is not that improbable. I was looking at the Venezuelan situation a couple days ago, even though that's another thing it's now Verboten to talk or think about, and Venezuela's economy has shrunk by 75% since the current dictatorship took over. *everyone* there (except regime members) is in abject poverty, those who complain are beaten or killed. They achieved that in just about 8 years, and that's the path we look to be headed down.

and no, there's no revolution brewing in Venezuela - just endless dictatorship.

134 Lots of people are stretched to the limit financially, and gas prices are about to go up significantly. Lots of people are 65+, and SS is about to get cut significantly. Many cities are about to go broke and their minority residents are waking up to how the Left has been using them.

So lots of people, especially white non-college, will get off their asses to vote, while many D voters will stay home.

That's the recipe for a wave election and Trump is exactly the guy to lead it.

I suspect the answer as to 'why' might be in this paragraph

Neither victory, by itself, can indicate much about the political environment. Only about 10,000 voters cast ballots in Pennsylvania, and just 2,800 did in New Hampshire. But both continue a trend of Democrats overperforming both President Joe Biden’s 2020 results and the results of the 2022 midterms in special elections so far this year. The trend began after the Dobbs decision striking down abortion rights, and has only accelerated since the midterms.

I disagree with this. The President has a pretty large amount of discretionary action at his hands IIRC.

He can (severely) downsize departments.
And make staying in that dept unpleasant:

If I were Prez, I'd relocate a quarter of the DOJ and FBI instantly to Del Rio Texas, even if they had to live and operate out of tents and tin shacks.

And then i'd displace other quarters to Moose Ass, Alaska, same dealio, tents and tin shacks. Nowheresville Nebraska. Etc.

Then I'd sit back and watch the quitting start.

There are things that can be done.

It's silly to give up Federal power to the Dims as we've seen with Pelosi and Biden, Schumer, etc.
It can always be worse.

It's a triple whammy and there is no way Trump can beat it. Frankly, Trump is delusional. He thinks he can overcome those factors by sheer force of personality, so he's not doing any kind of strategy or ground-work to counter them. (You know, besides telling Democrats he's pro-choice.)

It can always be worse. And it will be.

If the president actually tried to do something like you've described, he'd be disobeyed. Then the lawsuits fly along with the injunctions, more or less immediately. Then he'd be impeached. Removed or not, the disobedience will continue. Nobody moves. Nobody is fired. They just refuse to do as they're told - including those who are told to go enforce the directives by arresting people or closing offices.

The prolife movement worked for nearly 50 years to get Roe overturned. That was the primary goal of the prolife movement. Trump achieved that through his SCOTUS nominees. Now states can legislate restrictions when previously they couldn’t. Trump is now being smart politically… take the win! That’s what he’s saying to candidates for FEDERAL office (which he is, BTW). State level candidates, feel free to enact all manner of restrictions and bans… they’ll be popular some places and not so much elsewhere. The prolife movement wanted it to be a local issue. It now is. Win

Apparently he was killed by his cameraman/buddy when Crane told him he was reforming and ending the partnership. Buddy boy was charged after several decades with murder and the jury acquitted in part because all the evidence was circumstantial in the case and the original investigation wasn't that good in the first place.

Robert Graysmith wrote a book on the case, The Murder of Bob Crane, which title was changed to Auto Focus when the movie based on the book was released.

341 Woke James Bond Novels Replace Him With Disabled Black Gay Superspy

I mentioned that I was reading Anthony Horowitz' authorized James Bond novel Trigger Mortis. I liked it so well I've begun.to read another of his, Forever and a Day, about Bond's first double 0 license to kill case. They're not woke.

342 327 Back in the day, it was rumored that the Sheriff killed Crane because Crane used the Sheriff's daughter in making some porn.

I enjoyed the story.
Posted by: Chatterbox Mouse
--------
To my knowledge, Crane never sold his films nor disseminated them. He was just in advance of all the people that started making amateur pron at home when VHS and Betamax cameras came out.

Sad really and saw a documentary with his son that discussed some really painful memories. Crane was basically a poonhound and it became an obsession that he could not break out of. Son, at least, said though that Crane had some talks immediately before his death about seeking help and redemption for what he felt had destroyed his life. Supposedly, among the other evidence at the crime scene, it was an act of hatred that his buddy did when Crane told him he was through with his depravity.

308 I recently watched a 1962 British movie, "The password is Courage" about the real life exploits of Sgt. Charles Coward (what a name) in WW2 POW camps, and after seeing it I believe Hogan's Hero's was directly based on that.

Thx for the tip.

I worked for a family named Coward. I always wondered why they didn't change their name. Nice people.

Thanks for the rest of the story. Saw a contemporaneous documentary on A&E with the book as a source and followed the trial of Carpenter for the murder.

346 330 Trump isn't inevitable. The collapse and breakup of this country, now that's inevitable.

Nothing in human affairs is really inevitable except perhaps physical death of the body. What it does is reflect the sum total of millions if not billions of individuals making choices.

347 The entire hearing was bluster and blow just for show. The republicants will do absolutely nothing and everyone knows it. The public pays no attention to any of this.

348 The takeaway in much of the MSM: DM, 'Tearful Merrick Garland discusses his family fleeing the Holocaust as he furiously denies interfering with the Hunter Biden probe'

"...treats his position with respect as a way of 'repaying this country for the debt my family owes' for accepting them when fleeing the Holocaust."

What a sorry, manipulative, super powered desk jockey sob - all a constant - imho. (Think Richard Jewell, for one.) Following the untimely death of Justice Antonin Scalia in 2016, O nominated Judge Garland to fill the vacancy. He'll never forgive; they'll never forgive, that he was unable to take the position. (BTW, a daughter accepted a clerkship with Justice Elena Kagan but, reportedly, has been unable to fulfill it until he vacates his present position.)

2015, a psychology professor joined the White House's Social & Behavioral Sciences team. On 9/15/2015, President Obama issued an executive order directing Federal Government agencies to apply behavioral science insights to their programs to better serve the American people. On January 20, 2017, the website About SBST was "frozen in time," no longer to be updated.

353 The character was written as a daring, insouciant type who commanded respect from his men just by his presence and unflappability. Crane added a touch of his own personality to Hogan, and that tipped the balance into smarminess.

I always liked Kinchloe. It was too bad that because of the setting they couldn't do more with his character.
Posted by: Mary Poppins
-----------
I also thought "Kinch" (played by Ivan Dixon) was under-utilized on HH. He was also a hell of a director. A ton of TV shows in the 70's and 80's under his name (including The Rockford Files and Magnum P.I.).

354 Trump IS a realist. Gubernatorial candidate in my own Minny, Scott Jensen, lost precisely because he took a zero-tolerance stance. Republican women are openly admitting on the radio programs I listen to they voted democrat because of the issue.

I am pro-life, but also told medical staff during our three childbirths to save Mom if they had to make a choice.

Republicans need to put democrats on record by offering what 80% of the world agrees on(literally): No 3rd term baby killing unless moms life is in danger. Work from there.
