94 Yes! The Deuxieme Bureau did exist in 1875: "France's external military intelligence agency from 1871 to 1940. It was dissolved together with the Third Republic upon the armistice with Germany. However the term "Deuxième Bureau" . . . like "MI6" and "KGB", outlived the original organization as a general label for the country's intelligence service." (Wiki)

The Surete was founded in 1812.

96 The scenes Degas paints are seldom exciting but they offer an interesting perspective. In this case the man and his daughters and dog stand out against the relatively blank background. And the various directions the figures face gives it a sense of the moment and less posed, as a photograph might. Interesting technique.

While not as detailed as his oil paintings, I find Degas' pastel art very interesting for their sense of capturing a fleeting moment. And he uses a different color palette for his pastels.

104 The French have offensive body odor even in these modern times. Can't imagine how bad it was when this was painted.

Yes, as much as I would love to have lived in the Edwardian era, the lower level of hygiene and lack of deodorants does give me second thoughts.

And as a devotee of hardwood, the fact that even upper-class women generally sported thatches so thick there were still Japanese soliders in there who didn't know the war was over is also a turn-off.

But I'd still rather live then than now.

106 Ready for a dose of legal, reality-bending stupidity? DU is crowing about the economy.

We are doing better now then the 1980's, which Republicans portray as some sort Golden Age, except the majority of jobs Reagan created were government jobs, while Clinton, Obama, and Biden supervised the economy while it was created predominantly private sector jobs.

The politics of permanent grievance REQUIRES Rs see the future as broken. Most of them are permanently spoiled in that regard-- they will never see the country and the future except through the lens of their grievances.

Biden needs to be more Trump-like, telling people things are great. He's not strong on propaganda
Too straight forward, lacks fundamental bullshit skills. Keeps calling it "malarkey".

I feel like it's a general Democratic Party issue. We are just too humble.

Populists do that, endlessly repeat the laundry list of why the U.S. is terrible and why the "status quo establishment" is responsible and all is lost unless an innocent outsider rides in on a white horse and saves everybody. Not only right-wing.

108 Edgar Degas dot net, Place de la Concorde, 1875

(Bits & pieces) Place de la Concorde was not commissioned and shows the artist's friends, writer Daniel Halevy and the artist Ludovic-Napoleon Lepic with his daughters. ... In need of money he sold his masterpiece to Vicomte Ludovic-Napoleon Lepic, and the painting remained unknown until the end of the century.

As was first noted by Kirk Varnedoe, the black top hat of Viscount Ludovic-Napoleon Lepic...covers James Pradier's late 1830s sculpture of the city of Strasbourg, so recently lost to the Prussians, along with Alsace and Lorraine. The statue functioned as THE site of national mourning for Parisians during the Siege of Strasbourg in September 1870, the long and difficult Siege of Paris that winter, and especially after the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine by the newly founded German Kaiserreich in the spring of 1871...

...Lepic's red chest decoration that looks like the ribbon of the Legion d'Honneur. ... The composition and sartorial choices are key to a full sociohistoric reading of the painting. ...

Not typical; history helps with interpretation & I found it much more interesting. (But doubtful for hanging.) Thanks.

211 There once was a Convair F-106, that made a successful, unmanned (wheels up) landing in a cornfield, after the pilot had ejected. Plane was in a flat-spin, unrecoverable.

Except, that is, the force of the ejection shoved the nose of the plane DOWN, and it regained airspeed and airflow over the wings. In short, it began to fly, again. Unguided and with no engine restart, it simply glided forward into said cornfield, and slid to a stop, largely undamaged. In fact, it was restored to USAF service, some weeks later.
