Ace of Spades Pet Thread, September 23

let dog go check noise.jpg

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Old Names for Dogs

Which do you like? There are several photos of dogs for whom these names would fit in the thread. "Nosewise" seems to be gaining on "Norman".

A little poem, adjusted for poetic rhythm: >

The Grand Old Duke of York

He had one thousand names

For pups he met from day to day

But none of them was James

And the entire list of names, mostly alphabetical until the end, is also found in the thread.

hound names 2.png

And what about cats?

Lmao our cat is named Salmon. That's a ridiculous name for a dog

How do you pick a pet name?

Meet The PetMorons

babyonthemt.jpg

This is our 3 year old rescue dog Baby. We were on the top of Imogene Pass in Colorado at 13,100 feet in a snow squall when this picture was taken. We didn't even know she was in the frame until we looked at the pic after we got home. Anyway, thought you might enjoy this, God bless.

What an astonishing photo! We know a little about Baby's personality from it. Maybe we'll get to learn a little more someday.

Thanks for sharing this adventure with Baby.

roon n sang2.jpg

Sangria has been mentioned before but we thought she needed a playmate. They're both Maine Coon cats, Sangria is now 15 months and Rooney (male) is now 4 months. It was a tense few days in early September but they've settled down pretty well.

Lirio100

Beautiful cats. They do look a little tense in that first photo. Glad to hear that they are getting used to each other. Looks like they are making progress!

Had to put my buddy Spenser down today. He was 11, but it was too soon.

Anyway, here he is in better days, Champion Triskle Spenser Diego...

Hawkpilot

Oh, yes, it was too soon. So heart-wrenching to lose such a great dog. Glad you checked in with us.

K.T. -

Thanks for all your work on the pet thread. Long time reader of AoSHQ and the Pet Thread.

First, our 4yr old tabby Dini. I came home from work and found her up on the fireplace mantle next to the picture & paw print of our Flatcoated Retriever Fenway that we lost last year. Dini was quite fond of Fenway.

To give Dini a companion after we lost Fenway (and not ready for another dog) we adopted a Maine Coon kitten that has been featured here before as well. She is now a 1yr old and has brought a whole new level of activity in the OCiS household. The last pic has Dini at the top of the frame, with Smudge stretched out. They are taking a quick breather before they begin the next round of kitty crazies.

Our Country is Screwed

The photo of Dini next to her friend's memorial is wonderful. Smudge certainly has an impressive tail! Those two make a nice pair.

We had ordered a pizza and had eaten about half of it, then went out to a movie. We returned later to the biggest mess I've ever cleaned up. Raccoons had come in thru the pet door, helped themselves to the pizza and left their little tomato paw prints everywhere. That was our last pet door.

16 Charles Wesley, John's brother and the Methodist hymnist, wrote an early poem about their family cat, who had a really neat name:

I sing Grimalkin, brave and bold
Who makes intruders fly
His claws and whiskers they behold
And squall and scamper by.

More verses but too lazy to type them. Probably online somewhere.

17 How do you pick a pet name?

Frequently, they seem to pick themselves out.

I've told how that long-tailed yeller Tom we met at an Illinois rest stop bribed us with $15 to take him home; so, naturally, his name was Buck.

I've told how I wanted to name that little yellow kitten Chuck, to go with the other males, Buck, Jack, and Spark. Chuck didn't stick. He was just Charlie. Sure miss that little guy. 😿

I came home one evening to our just-found fluffy old shepherd, and standing there in the dim of evening, I thought, this gray-and-white critter looks like the foggy night. And just like that, I groaned, knowing he'd just been revealed as Foggy Doggy.

Rescued as a kitten from a busy highway - Fortune.

The Dalmatian we had too briefly? Spock. Hahaha. "No, not Spot; Spock!"

Suddenly, I feel kind-of allergic, thinking about all the many furry friends we've had in the past three decades.

Current dog was Honey at first, also Miss Wiggles and Little Girl, but somehow soon became Daisy.

And current kitty Onyxia, well, SonC dumped her on us when he left college. Not responsible for that one.

19 Dini is known for knocking things off counters and tables. Yet, she leaves Fenway's picture frame alone.

Smudge's tail measures about a foot long. The record is 17.5 inch long tail also on a Maine Coon cat.

32 "How do you pick a pet name?"

Sometimes we have a name we like before we get the pet, like Purry Mason and Della Street (who is also Della Luna but sometimes just Looooooona), but most of the time it will just come to us. Publius says Jake just looked like a Jake (we later added "the Uncouth" because he was). His family often named kittens/cats from where there first showed up (Binny was found in the corn bin; Porchy was found on the porch).

When my cat had kittens, they became Uno (self-explanatory), Oprah (why not, she was black but turned out to be a boy), Harli (started out as Callie since she was a calico, but Harli from harlequin was the name that stuck), Squeak (poor thing was the runt) and Moo who looked like a cow and was the biggest of them all.

Spooky was black, and Spider literally climbed the walls, which were a kind of burlap texture. Cato was a corner pouncer like Clouseau's houseboy. Cornpop was a bad dude. Kenny was named by a cow-orker when South Park was popular, and Taz also was suggested from a friend. Xena was a warrior princess.

I knew Rooney and Sangria were Coons the moment I looked at the top pic. It's not only the long coat, but the big ears and the heavy muzzles that give the game away. Smudge is as impressive, though without seeing his face and ears it was hard for me to tell his breed. What a tail --!

39 Felines' names? Arizona was named by my then-wife, who was from there, for his red-sandy coat and his cactus-like nature. Marie-Antoinette and Oreo came pre-named, but I suspect Marie was dubbed for her regal attitude, and Oreo's coat was mostly black with a white filling. Chekov the white-and-black Siberian was named by his breeder.

Tatiana Romanova the Siberian's name came from the James Bond heroine. Wolf the giant black longhair was social, big and rangy, and wolves do come in black. Stirling the current black cat was named for Stirling Moss the British race car driver, and Dagny for the Ayn Rand character Dagny Taggart.

41 "They're cats, it's not like they come when they are called consistently. "

I trained the kittens to come to a whistle. Mostly useful for Purry, who's often out and about and usually shows up within 5 minutes. Jake comes to tell me to STFU already (he's very sensitive to sound, doesn't like Youtube videos, thunder or whistling). Della doesn't go far anyway.

We had a temporary adoptee named Tater. She was a sweetie, but she looked like a potato with legs.

Our little black kitteh Scout (Jean Louise) is well-named, IMO.

If we ever get a dog, I want to name it Carl, or Mort if male, and Myrtle or Edna if female. My dad's uncle had a German shepherd named Mable.

65 I've never really been one to give cats "people" names like Johnny or Mabel. Yet here I am with "Stirling" and "Dagny." At least those are uncommon among humans, at least nowadays. "Tatiana" and its variations like "Tatyana" show up now and then. And "Wolf" can be a human name, perhaps shortened from "Wolfgang."

Oh, the most ironic cat name I've ever known was that given to the creamy puffball with blue eyes, probably a colorpoint Siberian, that I rescued from an empty parking lot one morning in 2003. She became Linda's cat, and had the irritating habit of growling at you while on your lap if you dared to move. Her name? "Angelique"!

66 The reason Honey didn't stick for the pup is, any pet might be called "Honey."

Similarly, you don't name a dog "Buddy" because all dogs are Buddy at some point. "Hi, howyadoin', Buddy?" Although, Daughter named hers that; she found that starving, tick-infested basset hound abandoned on the road.

He was loud.

74 Speaking of dog names, I am picking up a GSP puppy tomorrow that needs a name. I had two shorthairs before named Greta and then Emma. Both were great dogs. The name needs to be a two syllable German female name.
Liesl? Marta? Ula?

75 Many years ago, the grey fluffball kitten was oh-so-cute, so we named her "Puff".

A few weeks later, we saw 2 little fluffy balls on "her" backside (did I mention the kitten had a LOT of hair?).

So "Puff" became "Puff Daddy" 😂😂😂

77 And some of you may remember that Stirling, during his wildest kitten days, was known as "the Evil Black Kitten of War and Pestilence."

I DO remember that and you despaired of your sanity. Then, you got another cat thinking it would be better and it wasn't, and this has been... a bit of a journey.

Have them get some Feliway for the cats. Will help get the kittens accepted again

80 If I ever have another red tabby, especially if he's big, he may get the name "Speaker to Animals," "Speaker" for short.

81 Fanny doesn't tolerate chicken and demands kibble. Taste of the Wild has two good ones. She also gets the fish based Reveal canned food. Dog and cat want freeze dried minnows for a bed time treat. I get all of it through Chewy.

86 Look I understand some might not 'get' the business of abandoned dogs in failed factory towns (FFT) but for real, those dogs were not pets.
Then residents would leave with their 'assets' and turn their animals loose. These were NOT 'pets'. They were never socialized and they were dangerous to begin with and if you let them pack up they were insanely dangerous.
One had to just get used to it.
After a while there weren't any more. Yes, they should have been saved but that wasn't the dynamic at the time. Some weepy types complained, and got told to shut the eff up unless they wanted some little kid mauled to death on their way to school.
I loved my dog, Blue and I love my cats.

92 When I was scouting for a new feline roommate in the late spring of '22, one of the shelters about 100 miles away had an adult female about 7 yo who was a dead ringer for the late Chekov -- white with black, pink nose, thickly furred, shaped like a puffball. I was tempted to check her out except, when I wrote, they insisted still on face diapers for your visit. And she was described as "Not good with other cats." Since I thought I might eventually have a second feline, that was a red flag.

Last time I looked on Petfinder a few months ago, she was still there. Her name? "Magic."

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at September 23, 2023 05:10 PM (omVj0)

93 My dearest cat was found bowling in the alley behind our house - tiniest little thing, starved and covered in fleas. We weren't sure if she was gonna make it, so we took her to the vet for some TLC and flea treatment. She had the softest coat, purred like it was going out of style, and had the sweetest temperament. She was a cuddler.

When we picked her up from the vet a couple of days later, the staff had fallen in love with her (to the point I was thinking the didn't want to part with her), and they said that she had the cutest little freckles on her face (little pigmented dots where each of her whiskers were attached).

So "Freckles" she was called from that day onward.

Oh, he was only horrible in the sense that all kittens are trouble. He has settled down nicely (though he still causes some trouble). I envisioned a 2-4 year old cat, one still lively and youthful, but not kitten-crazy . . . about like he is NOW.

I keep suggesting to Miss Linda we could drive up and she could adopt Magic. But she keeps murmuring, "I don't want a cat now." And she was so attached to Chekov that a cat who resembles him so closely is not a good idea.

Kittuhs don't understand 'off'. About 3:10, I woke up staring at little kittuh feet and Laura meowing. Went to roll over and Casper was laying on my hip, just chillin', looking at me. It was time to get up.

Then he rolls in it.

The story of my life with these two. Stirling still likes to milk-tread my arm when he knows I'm awake, then sit on my chest and bump his muzzle against my beard. Hard to go back to sleep after that.

116 I pick the dog; my husband gets naming rights. He never gives a reason or chooses a spelling.

Cindy (wsa Cinnamon at shelter)
Dooly (was Ranger at shelter)
Charlie (was Chopin at rescue)
Jude (was Jude at vet's office- I guess he liked that name)

Before we had children, he wanted Helsinki for a girl and Wojtek Fibak for a boy. We ended up adopting older, already named kids.
