The Sound of Freedom Begins Racking Up Millions Overseas

The Sound of Freedom has made $183 million in the US domestic box office so far, and it's still pulling in around $100,000 per day.

The "controversial" film -- it's now controversial to object to child sex trafficking -- was finally released internationally last week.

It immediately became the #1 film in all of Latin America -- a pretty big market -- and in New Zealand, too.

Sound of Freedom took the top spot in Latin America's box office over its opening weekend.
Angel Studios, the distributor of Sound of Freedom, told the Washington Examiner that the independent film attracted nearly two million viewers across 18 Latin American countries.
"We're seeing packed theaters, standing ovations, widespread enthusiasm, and strong word-of-mouth from Buenos Aires to Mexico City to Bogota to Caracas, Lima, and beyond," Jared Geesey, Angel Studios chief distribution officer, said. "We set a goal of reaching 2 million in advance ticket sales -- which took a full week in the U.S. -- and reached that goal in just four days in Latin America."

Angel Studios is celebrating success across multiple international audiences. The film took the No. 1 box office spot in New Zealand. It came in at No. 2 in Australia and South Africa and No. 4 in the United Kingdom.

That's pretty good.

The writer and director are Latin American as was most of the cast and crew. That gave them a big lift in Latin America.

As many people have pointed out, if this film was not about the left's favorite hobby of child exploitation, they'd be raining awards on it.

Below, the real-life hedge fund manager who was recruited to pose as a "Jeffrey Epstein type" figure who could credibly bankroll a pedophile island and induce the child-traffickers to bring their slaves unwittingly to a rescue.

18 Liam Neeson made a movie on the same themes as Sound of Freedom called Memory.

Basically he plays an aging hit man charged with killing people to protect human traffickers and decides its too much and flips the side he is on.

One part of the movie that was interesting to me is the American pols/police leadership do not career about sex trafficking, but the person who does the most is a Mexican cop who is assisting the American cops.

I thought it was a silly SOP to "Americans bad, Mexicans good" but...maybe Latin Americans ARE more pissed off about this then Americans are? I mean it is their kids...

Everyone dismissed it before it came out because it couldn't be a success. When it was a large success, Hollywood just said, "Oh, it's a fluke," and they actively refused to learn anything from it because it was too hard to replicate easily.

It shows the normal statistical band for total performance over time based on opening weekend figures. No, it's about release strategies and independent film.

They're still trying to make as much through the theatrical run. They (the producers) just haven't made it available on streamers yet. They also don't have to follow the 45 day window which is corporate policy at places like WB. Universal has a 30 day window.

Don't bet on it being nefarious. This is still in theaters, and I strongly suspect that Angel is going to do traditional windowing. It will finish its theatrical run, then hit DVD/BD distribution (and possibly PVOD in parallel), then it will finally be licensed out to a library streamer (eventually). It still has runway and Angel isn't going to shit on its home video sales.

It turns out that traditional windowing - get this - made sense and was highly profitable, while parallel or rapid release on captive streaming platforms is the equivalent of putting your money into a pile and setting it on fire.

Shocking, I know.

And this Disney/Charter deal will probably spell the end of the current era of streaming, along with the other losses piling up. Windowing is going to come back, ad-supported services at modest prices (or just included with cable subscriptions) are going to dominate, budgets are going to come down and some of these guys will probably close up shop and go back to leasing out catalogues to third parties.

I'm glad it's doing well and provided a summer moviegoing alternative to the dreadful Indiana Jones.

But it was boring, and as an account of what actually happened, pretty silly.

That last criticism can be unfair because so many other "historical account" movies contain dramatic embellishments that totally overwhelm the true story. So watch the movie if you think it will entertain you, just don't imagine you are somehow helping a cause.

Oh, yes. Niche services are here to stay and will likely keep making money.

Criterion stuff. Anime. Korean stuff. Euro stuff. Some of it will cross over to the big platforms (Korean stuff does regularly on Netflix), but the niche services are probably going to be successful - albeit small - players.

But the mega-services (Paramount+, Hulu, D+, Max, Peacock, Netflix, Prime, etc.) can't survive in their current forms (well, Netflix and Hulu probably can). The model *has* to change, and ad-supported and bundling are forces that will not be turned back.

Everything old is new again. Welcome to cable.

Streaming will never become such a cash cow that these studios want to blow money on drugs bought on set under cover of the film expenses.

The only way it can marginally work is if it becomes like a library where you can watch as wide a selection of shows for as nominal fee as possible and the cash is split up by the streamer based off the licenses. There's only so much a family has to spend on this kind of thing and a low monthly fee rebated back by use is probably the way to do it.

Because the stuff they want to watch is on many services, and most of the ones they have are on the free introductory period and cost nothing.
