Three Holidays This Weekend!

On September 17, 1787, the delegates to the Constitutional Convention met for the last time to sign the document they had created. We encourage all Americans to observe this important day in our nation's history by attending local events in your area. Celebrate Constitution Day through activities, learning, parades and demonstrations of our Love for the United State of America and the Blessings of Freedom Our Founding Fathers secured for us.

The National Constitution Center will be observing Constitution Day on Monday. In case you needed a reason to take some kids out of school for a special learning experience. Some adults could use a little education about the Constitution, too!

Today is Mexican Independence Day.

This celebration is characterized by the performance of "El Grito de Dolores" -- "grito" meaning battle cry -- inspired in the early morning of Sept. 16, 1810, when the Catholic priest Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the bells of his parish and called on the Mexican population to take up arms against the Spanish authorities in a fight that would last 11 years.

I'm seeing Halloween stuff in the store. Constitution Day and Mexican Independence Day decorations? Not so much.

My Spanish is not very good, but El Grito de Dolores sounds to me a lot like "the cry of struggle and suffering" or something like that. And the start of an eleven year war sounds kind of grim. Maybe that's why Cinco de Mayo is more popular in the USA. Shorter battle.

Anyway, there may be something to learn from the Mexicans' declaration of independence from Spain that could be applicable today. What do you think?

And yesterday was Salvadoran Independence Day. Even less recognized.

Today is the second day of Rosh Hashanah. So Happy New Year to all the Jewish members of The Horde, lurkers and other Jewish readers!

Rosh Hashanah 2023 begins on Friday, September 15, 2023, and ends on the evening of Sunday, September 17, 2023.

A holiday which could inspire reflection for a lot of people.

Sometimes I think that the California legislature is trying to help Gavin Newsom seem presidential by working with him, and sometimes I think they are trying to help him by acting crazier than him. They have been busy.

Second Amendment

California lawmakers have approved a resolution proposed by Gov. Gavin Newsom calling for a convention to add an amendment to the U.S. Constitution related to gun control.
In June, Newsom proposed a 28th Amendment, which would raise the minimum age to purchase a gun from 18 to 21, require universal background checks, institute a reasonable waiting period for all gun purchases, and bar civilians from purchasing assault weapons.
Newsom's proposal, approved Thursday, faces a difficult road ahead. Amending the Constitution requires either two-thirds of state legislatures to call for a convention, also called an Article V Convention or amendatory convention, or a two-thirds majority vote in both houses of Congress . .

Ambitious.

COVID

California quietly disavows medical misinformation law before courts can strike it down

California's COVID-19 medical misinformation law, which threatens the licenses of doctors who deviate from a fluctuating "scientific consensus" in conversations with patients, got a frosty reception in front of trial and appeals courts this year.
Signed into law by Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom nearly a year ago, AB 2098 may not exist by the time judges get around to deciding its constitutionality.
A provision to repeal the law was apparently added to Senate Bill 815, which makes changes to the Medical Board of California, in late August or early September with the legislative session winding down. Nobody seems to know, or is willing to say, how it got there.

They still seem to want to interfere in the patient/doctor relationship, however.

Gavin Newsom faces slate of transgender bills targeting parental rights

California's legislature has taken major steps to institutionalize hiding child transgender identity from parents in a slate of bills headed to Gov. Gavin Newsom's (D-CA) desk.
One or both houses of the Golden State legislature have overwhelmingly passed five separate bills aimed at both hiding childhood proclamations of transgender identity from parents and punishing them for not "affirming" the child through social and medical interventions.

Will Newsom act as a presidential-type "voice of reason" here, or not? The bill he signed and promoted last year is not a hopeful sign. It affects parents in all states.

This week's bill:

BREAKING: The California legislature just passed another insane LGBT bill.
SB 407 requires Foster families to sign a document demonstrating their understanding "that sexual orientation, gender identity and expression can evolve over time" and provide "all services to LGBTQ+ children."
Basically, it requires foster parents pledge allegiance to the rainbow flag cult in order to be a part of the state's foster system and essentially bans parents with Christian conservative views.

That "evolve over time" bit bears some thought.

Who is fighting back?

The woman in this interview, Erin Friday, a mother and attorney, has started an organization to help parents surprised by the "evolution" to a trans identity in a child. Her own daughter decided that she was pansexual after a lesson about the "genderbread person", then her identity changed to trans. Mom helped her come back to reality.

Erin Friday's daughter was introduced to gender identity ideology in a comprehensive sex-ed class in seventh grade. "The seed was planted after that class," Friday says. "And in fact, all of her friends, there were five, sat in my front yard saying what their new labels were."
Friday says she was "alarmed by the language that they were using, including 'pansexual,' which is not a term that 11-year-olds should know."
The mother began looking into what her daughter was learning in school and was struck by the fact that other adults were not also questioning the teaching of gender ideology to middle schoolers.When her daughter said she was "transgender," Friday began taking decisive steps to rescue her from transgenderism. She took her daughter's phone, put her in a new school, and tried her best to surround the preteen with the truth about who she was as a female.
It was not easy, but Friday says, as a parent, "you have to be strong enough, your love for your child has to be strong enough, to take their vitriol." After about a year and a half, Friday's daughter stopped claiming a transgender identity.
Today, through the work of the parental support group Our Duty, (OurDuty.group) Friday is helping other families navigate through gender identity ideology.

There is a nice break-out of topics under the video at the YouTube link. She has been testifying against various bills in California, and notes that each bill is a stepping stone to the next. The first one she testified against concerned secrecy by insurance companies when parents paid for adult childrens' mastectomies, etc.

Other notes: More school counselors are now a bad thing in California due to ideological capture. It is safer to protest transgender issues than it used to be. The internet is dangerous to kids.

Thinking a Second Time

Here's the link to last week's thread, September 9, Come Back, Australia!

Topics included the effects of social media on young people, the degradation in scientific journals as it related to gender studies and "green energy" and some people who are starting to fight back. Incidentally, even the Australian government seems to be coming around to some nuance concerning COVID boosters. Compared to our own government.

The last comment of last week's thread was by madmike.

A friend just returned from a month driving around Australia. He was last there just before the Covid fiasco. He said the changes there were astonishing in that short period. The Australian people seem to have completely caved to the gay and trans ideology with free speech under greater attack than even the UK or US. It seemed to dimish the further he got from the large cities but was still present in some ways until he was in very small towns.
Really sad. I have a cousin near Sydney but haven't been there in over 20 years. I was contemplating a trip until I talked with my friend, probably won't waste my time now.

I wonder if the changes have been faster in Australia or Canada? This is creepy.

Weird that Canada is moving ahead so forcefully with transitioning kids while most of Europe is backing off "affirmative care" due to lack of scientific support for its safety and efficacy.

It interesting that the trans ideology has made far more progress in English-speaking counties than non-English-speaking countries. (For example, non-English-speaking European countries are far more skeptical of "medical transitioning".)

Here's an interesting note, though:
"Hidalgo established an alternative government in Guadalajara with himself at the head and appointed two ministers. On 6 December 1810, Hidalgo issued a decree abolishing slavery, threatening those who did not comply with death. He abolished tribute payments that indigenous peoples had to pay to criollo and peninsular lords. ...He named Pascacio Ortiz de Letona as representative of the insurgent government and sent him to the United States to seek support, but Ortiz de Letona was apprehended by the Spanish army and executed."

Would things have changed if the US had gotten involved? With Hidalgo's stance on Slavery, US might not have.

I find it too difficult to go down the rabbit hole and find starting points for this stuff. I think that's fine, to place the point there for any number of social ills that were created when the nation elected those people.

But if we're talking about national elections, the nation sold its soul after 9/11, and the Bush admin introduced the Patriot Act into our lives, which were instrumental in destroying many of our freedoms.

And before that, Team Clinton did quite a lot to destroy the national consensus on any number of moral issues. And before that, we had Roe v. Wade, and before that, the EPA, and before that, Vietnam, and so on and so on and so on. I can't find any real starting point.

After spending nearly three hours this morning do yard work with the neighbor's damned dog barking during the whole time (starting at 0630 - before sunrise)

I've come to the inescapable conclusion that if anyone has a dog door installed anywhere on their house, that is prima facie evidence that they are a bad neighbor and even worse dog owner.

A dog door is what a lazy and irresponsible person does to shirk off disciplining their dog, failing to ever take their dog out for a walk, just letting the little feral beast do whatever they want.

Another one of those things that would be hard to predict, at what point does he pivot? When does he stop being Governor of the State of Insanity, and when does he become the "sensible" Democrat who just wants to help everybody.

I don't know if they're going to remove Biden/Hairyass, and put him in there, but if they do get rid of those two idiots, Newsome's the most reasonable choice. And anyone who think the insanity of Californica is going to hold him back, I don't know what to tell you. His persona will change as needed.

I watched a video that said only abou 500,000 folks are currently paying on their student loans. Interest on those is starting back up and he said the average loan payment is $400 a month.

Realistically, those loans will never be repaid as such. Same as loans to places like Argentina. The misconception is that most of the loans out there are private loans--something like 80-90 percent of the balance due now is to the fedgov itself, not private guaranteed loans. There are some family loans and odds and ends like Perkins loans (due to schools) that are a bit different.

Just lay in chair and watch TV while the dog goes in and out trying to get some form of attention and exercise.

In the case of my neighbor, they have a high energy dog and they are low energy people. There is a very good reason why people take their dogs out for walks. Both parties get much needed exercise and the dog isn't being abused by an absentee owner who has essentially a plush toy that eats, shits and barks.

77 OT: RE: the discussion of cars and working on them . . . I got my brake tag, and the tech there changed the air filter for me for $20. There was a catch: He had to undo a clamp at the *engine* end of the hose as well as loosening the one at the air box end. The video I saw, and the car's owner's manual, did not mention the engine-side clamp at all. With that clamp undone, the box lid lifted off without much trouble; the new filter I bought fit fine; and he clamped everything back down without issue.

If I still have this car in another 70K miles, and can physically do it, maybe I'll be able to change the filter myself. Since I only drive about 9500 miles a year, at least here where the roads are the finest of Third World quality, it could be 2031 before I need to tackle the job.

We lived there, in Silicon Valley and on the Central Coast from 2000 - 2013. The state back then was devolving into a petty dictatorship. The state's intrusion into everyday life was rampant. Control over your water use, what trash was acceptable, when and where you could do this, that or the other thing. High fuel costs. High food costs (except for certain, seasonal items grown locally) and massive enforcement of nature/wildlife "protection" laws.

Liberal/radical neighbors were all to eager to turn people in for using the wrong trashcan or watering their lawn on the wrong day. Law enforcement totally disregarded the massive influx of illegals and harassed legal residents for crooked license plates or broken turn signal lights.

It's what the left want for everyone.

Dunno. Haven't read the proposed rules but I think it was majority to adopt the text of amendments. But, any document of amendments adopted by a Convention still requires 3/4 of each state's legislature to vote to ratify.

Any vehicle I own, I get a copy of Hayne's Manuals for them. Plenty of pix, basic troubleshooting and maintenance, even error codes if you want to go that far as to get a cheap code reader. Plenty of pictures describing how to replace items or service the vehicle including tricks or tips for certain trickier actions.

They also help keep your service people honest as you can more easily understand when they are trying to pitch bullshit at you.

Jefferson was ambassador to France under the late Articles Congress just as Adams was ambassador to G. Britain. Jefferson even supposedly had a hand in writing the French Declaration of Human Rights but left before the Revolution kicked off. He found the French nobility to be absolutely rotten and profoundly disliked the Brits. Hamilton on the other hand believed that the US should emulate and have closer relations with Britain.

I agree that Washington could do little once Jefferson bailed and made him a Federalist Party target and he unfortunately lost Hamilton due to the scandal in bonds. Most of the rest of his cabinet were place servers.

That pattern continued to some extent during Adams one term as well. Adams had his own vice president leading the opposition and Hamilton his own party chief disliked Adams. Pretty much followed David McCulloch's biography who is probably one of our leading historians now that Thomas Fleming has left this mortal coil. Adams is under valued as a theoretician of republics while Madison is somewhat overpraised. Adams and His Defence of the Constitutions of the US is a masterpiece and he more or less helped draft the predecessor to the US Constitution via his submissions for the state Constitution of Mass which is coincidentally the oldest US federal or state constitution still in use.

Fleming's books are almost all to be appreciated but his New Dealer's War is scathing toward FDR and his actions in WWII. Fleming was a fan of FDR until he actually examined his record. Even better than Amity Schlaes book Forgotten Man

Green's challenge to Trump in 2016 in Michigan revealed reported versus actual ballots as mere small fractions of actual ballots versus reported votes. Slovenly workers routinely simply ran the ballots again and again through the scanner until they got the vote they wanted. That is why Ruby Freeman and her daughter were doing what they were doing every election. Run the ballots through until you get the count.

Dems now though have adopted the pre printed ballots as superior as it stuffs the ballot boxes with the appropriate supporting documents post election. That is why the counts have become so long is to insure that the supporting evidence matches the reported votes.

They manage to preemptively include supporting evidence by claiming they were provisional ballots that then get counted despite voting out of precinct which is unlawful in most jurisdictions.

The Dems have figured out that if they simply throw all the ballots in a box, good, fraudulent, and illegal ballots, then the GOP cannot challenge the result because it would be disenfranchising voters and that you cannot identify what ballots are to be excluded when they are all commingled together.

Easiest way to stop this is have that precinct or jurisdiction's ballots thrown out for illegal votes. Probably the courts would argue that is punishing legal voters as well as illegal and not allow it.

Another way to fight it is go after the voter registration lists and cull out all the fake multiple registrations in them--addresses in vacant lots, PO boxes, and other such. Remove the floaters and it makes the fraud much more difficult. The Dems have a more or less continuous fraud system workign with their voter registration drives paid for with dark money ginning up voter registrations valid or not and paying per registration to countless footsoldiers. At election time, the footsoldiers are paid to manufacture and 'harvest' ballots and once again paid per ballot. Makes the incentives on the individual footsoldiers to commit fraud and keeps the higher ups hands clean. They also work on petitions and other such activity.

So organized that they have regular wages, housing, rental cars, and meal allowances and often it is a side gig for college students to do it. The payment per ballot is often a bonus.

I left country just after reunification. I did enjoy my time there, more now than I did at the time, really. I have a lot of nostalgia for those days.

But Octoberfest was overrated, I think. Really, just too many people. The one time I went, we ended up in a biker bar. Very quiet place. The locals didn't bother us, we didn't bother them. I think they knew it would be a bad idea if they tried, and I'm damn glad they didn't.

He's from a poor district just south of Tyler (Jacksonville) with no major cities, and the last couple of elections he hasn't even had a primary opponent.
