Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | CNN: Biden's Approval Rating Hits Rock-BottomMATTINGLY: We have brand-new CNN polling this morning, and the numbers are rough for President Biden. It could spell trouble for Democrats and the president's hopes for reelection in 2024. Still early, but Biden's approval rating has sunk to 39 percent. Nearly 60 percent of voters think Biden's policies are making the economy worse. Close to 70 percent of Democrats want somebody else to run for president. And the president's approval among Democratic voters, that's slipping. HARLOW: Now, these are all very troubling for the White House. This new CNN poll shows no clear winner between President Biden and nearly all of the leading Republican presidential candidates in these theoretical matchups, except for Nikki Haley, who leads President Biden by 6 points. Donald Trump, 1 point ahead of Biden. One point ahead. One point. And Biden won't even be the nominee. Ed Morrissey writes that CNN is actually underselling the bad news here -- because it isn't just Biden's job approval that's low. Voters also don't like him as a person. Perceptions of Biden personally are also broadly negative, with 58% saying they have an unfavorable impression of him. Fewer than half of Americans, 45%, say that Biden cares about people like them, with only 33% describing him as someone they're proud to have as president. A smaller share of the public than ever now says that Biden inspires confidence (28%, down 7 percentage points from March) or that he has the stamina and sharpness to serve effectively as president (26%, down 6 points from March), with those declines driven largely by Democrats and independents.
"I thought it was important to say to my friends and clients and other people, let's just take a step back and try to be really number-specific and really sort of who has what cards in their poker hand," Messina told Playbook. "And you would just rather be Joe Biden than Donald Trump." "Historically, we're fucking bedwetters," he added. "We grew up in the '80s and '90s when Republicans won elections all the time. Democrats had their hearts deeply broken when HILLARY [CLINTON] lost and people didn't see that coming. And so, you know, we continually believe every bad thing people say."Professional racist Van Jones disagrees, and points out that whether CNN and the professional cadre of Democrat staffers (but I repeat myself) want to admit it or not, people are in fact having discussions about Joe Biden's advanced age and his obvious inability to continue in the job. He even seems to make a jab about Biden's age by parrying Messina's talk of "bedwetters" by saying it may be time to put on your "Depends" -- diapers for older people. Trump surrogate Ric Grennell says that Biden will be replaced at the national convention, by a sudden darkhorse nominee that the Republicans aren't even prepared to run against. The name offered here is Gretchen Whitmer. But it could be anyone. "First of all, you're not allowed. He's civil service, and you're not allowed to fire him. But forget that, because I don't necessarily go by everything. But Dr. Fauci would tell me things, and I wouldn't do them, in many cases," Trump responded. "But also, he wasn't a big player in my administration. Dr. Fauci became a big player in the administration of Biden." ++++ I wonder who they polled. Stretch a net across the street and ask the first 100 people if they've ever heard of Nikki Haley. I'll bet only about half of them answer in the affirmative. Then ask those people if they knew she was running for president. Probably half to 2/3. Then as those remaining people if they support her for president, and it will be a fairly small number. I tell them he’s in excellent health. President Biden is good man as we all know and experienced. I hear at work that Governor Newsome needs to run in 2024 it’s ridiculous talk. He can run in 2028. I think Christie is a threat to Biden and this RFK is terrible republican attempt to draw dem votes away from joe. The CNN poll shows half of the country would vote for Nikki Haley? Now you know it's bullshit. We should be concerned! We have time to correct the problem. We're the party of solutions & critical thinkers unlike the fascist trash on the other side. It's a constant chorus from the media now. He's too old, he's doing a bad job, all day every day. He's easily the best President of my lifetime and gotten more done than I ever thought possible. >>Hindsight is 20/20. They played the moment well. It really was fascinating to watch. They ratcheted the fear to 11 quick and started off with 'shut down for a few days to clean facilities' then when everyone was good and home 'don't come back for a while.'
People seem to forget this wasn't just a thing in the US. The entire western world with the exception of Sweden went into lockdown mode. Australia reverted to being a penal colony. And Europe was much more restrictive than the US. It is ridiculous to think that with all of that going on and virtually the entire medical community, at least those who were allowed to have any sort of public platform, Trump could have somehow exerted a power the president doesn't even have and force states to open. It really doesnt matter how bad things get, most people have written off Trump and they arent coming back. Even with $5 gas and double digit inflation. No. But in the beginning, you could see no harm in a yellow star. And even after the fact, you can't blame an abundance of caution.
Since you don't know me or anything about me, allow me to educate you as to my position. Early on, I said it was probably wise to take reasonable precautions, for the same reason one closes bathhouses during an AIDS epidemic. I warned, though, that if they did so for a prolonged period, and didn't have rock solid evidence that it was needed, they were playing with fire and would regret it. I have not changed my mind. Reasonable precautions to deal with a novel, but potentially catastrophic epidemic threat are not a plot. However, if continued beyond the time where they are either needed or have been shown to be ineffective, the perpetrators will pay a heavy price in lost credibility, so that when the next epidemic occurs, and it will, we will ALL pay the price. This shouldn't be controversial. Posted by: Archimedes at September 08, 2023 03:58 PM (I/Qkd) 201

I despise all polls and believe they're poisoned wells. But the last WSJ had pretty fair internals and it showed Trump in a tie with Dementia Man. Let that sink in for a moment. Then look at the other numbers, especially the negatives, which no other presidential candidate has ever won with. Then go to the part where, fair or not, over 60% think some of the charges against him are fair. Then wander over to another part that measures the amount of the Republican electorate who voted for him last time, and the amount now which is less. It doesn't get any better in the Independent column. A reasonable person would at least look at that and pause. Especially given the current state of our country, the almost absolute totalitarian government in charge, the economy, the invasion, the loss of liberty, etc. This shouldn't even be close. Trump surrogate Ric Grennell says that Biden will be replaced at the national convention, by a sudden darkhorse nominee that the Republicans aren't even prepared to run against.
The name offered here is Gretchen Whitmer. But it could be anyone. ----- I predict that Biden will step down around the time of the convention, citing his desire to protect his family from the constant attacks by those evil nasty Republicans. Kamala will get to be president for a couple of months. Getting her name in the history books, followed by a nice 8-figure book deal and a bunch of 6-figure speaking engagements, will be her payoff for not running. The actual ticket is tough to predict. >>That's not the debate we're having. The debate is whether Trump is responsible and blameworthy for his role in the Covid fiasco.
No, it's not the debate you are having. The truth is neither Trump nor DeSantis did everything right during Covid and hindsight makes it even more obvious. DeSantis locked FL down hard including the beaches long after the 2 weeks and he could have stopped at any time. He didn't. But Trump accomplished way more in his 3 years before the virus than most of the clowns we have put in that job got done in 8. And he openly had the left and deep state trying to sabotage him at every turn along with a not inconsequential number of his own party helping them. The reason this always turns into a Covid argument is because DeSantis supporters, and there really are only two camps here, don't want to talk about the stuff Trump accomplished. So yea, he proved he can overcome a hell of a lot in DC and produce. Posted by: JackStraw at September 08, 2023 04:02 PM (ZLI7S) 223

He had an opening to sway conservative voters from Trump. He chose "it's 1993, guys!" campaign staff. That is not Trump's fault. Trump was at 30 and Carson was at 20 in 2015; Trump is now at 60 and Ron at 19%. And just like the Dems could pick whoever they want at the convention, so can the Republicans. Nope. Grennell specifically refers to an inane and, yes, homophobic video released by the DeSsntis campaign that looks like something cobbled together by Nick Fuentes after a coke binge. Crap like that loses elections, and DeSantis was rightly criticized for it. Grennell is also clear: minors under 18 are off limits to tranny groomers and LGBT+ apparatchiks, but over 18 adults should be free to make their own choices as long as they don’t impose on others. This has been Trump’s position from the beginning, there’s nothing new here. As for Grenell, he's entitled to his opinion too. I would think any Republican candidate can have a different opinion about the trannie nonsense, as long as they're not FOR the groomers. Do you ever make anything other than strawman arguments? The other candidates have their merits including things like their age and fresh ideas. To immediately dismiss that is comical for at least a few of them. Despite his successes Trump seems unable to grasp his failure and learn from them. People yearn for more than the same combative, self serving platitudes. They want real Leadership and crisp, clear principled decision making. They want someone with a plan that looks forward, not backwards. They're mostly tired of this garbage and want to move on- at least the part who can put us over the top electorally. The hardcore Trump supporters — I call them Escalator Magas — are very problematic. They’ve decided that Trump is a god, not a politician. I’ve been on record for ages saying that the hero worship of politicians is a lib thing, not a conservative thing. Politicians are our employees, not our gurus or heroes. America functions best when the electorate understands that. Relevant: Conservatives Don’t Worship Politicians—That’s a Lib Thing I have praised Trump’s presidency for years, but that doesn’t matter to the Escalator crowd. One can’t offer even the mildest criticism of Trump without the Truth Social hordes launching into a collective diaper-soiling. It’s tedious. It’s even worse if one dares say ANYTHING positive about Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Should you even accidentally do so, it’s like every banshee in the history of Celtic lore begins keening in unison. The Escalator approach is to convince everyone in the GOP to abandon primary support for any candidate who isn’t Trump. They’ve decided that the best way to do this is to be as unhinged as possible and alienate the people they want to win over. I’ve written many times that I don’t buy into the argument that Trump can’t win the general election. His hardcore fans have now convinced me that they will do everything in their power to drive away people who might consider voting for him, but aren’t interested in joining a cult. Dave in Fla spent most of 2020 doing very solid analysis that turned out to be wrong because the scale of cheating was way more stupendous than he predicted. He didn't argue that Trump was beyond the margin of fraud, just that Trump would win handily. In his postmortem assessments, he was fairly clear about why thought he turned out to be wrong, and started reassessing things. That is the source of his opinions on a path to 270 given the knowledge we have now, post-2020. That is precisely what most people say they want from analysts: an honest assessment of outcomes, criticism of the approach, and then retry with lessons learned. As if these suits are anything other that paid actors for the donor class. The pompous platitudes about justice, the Constitution, law and order, the founding fathers-- it's all a joke. We no longer have a democracy and the feds are wiping their asses with the bill of rights. I don't see any other option other than Trump. Yes, I want to say "fuck you" to establishment. My number issue is political persecution. I don't see the point in voting GOP except in local elections. The GOP will not stop the political persecution of J6rs or any other dissenters. When they get confronted by the radical left, they choke or stand down every time (In TN, in GA, in AZ). The GOP is just the other corporation asking for money. They will not give us representation, they serve their donors. If another Republican is ever again allowed to be prez, they will be pro-war, populism will be made to heel. I don't like it either. Lots I don't like about the way Trump does things but for the most part he is successful doing it his way. If you read Trump's books or listen to some of his old interviews the one personal trait he holds highest is loyalty and he believes it is his duty to get even. He even uses that term. Right or wrong he believes Ron is being disloyal to him after he helped him with the governors race and he seems to have a personal grudge about it. As I've said all along I'd support Ron if he wins the nomination. I just never have believed he would. The GOPe will happily let the Dems win in 2024 to purge Trump and his supporters from the party. Any DEM but Biden (or Harris) will wipe Trump out in a Goldwater-style landslide. That would mean the DEMs win a huge majority in both the House and Senate, too. Trump's followers are OK with that outcome. Because it will teach the GOP a lesson or something. Trump supporters will ensure, if Trump isn't the nominee, the GOP loses in 2024 to further weaken the GOPe. It's a recipe ripe for disaster, mostly because the GOPe now has, for once, an equally unreasonable chunk of GOP voters to contend with. No longer can they foist Bushes, Romneys and McCains on the base with no recourse. Unfortunately(?), it may result in a stare down that destroys the party. Interesting and canny move by Newsom playing the reverse Uno card on his party today. He knows that no Democrat other than Biden (or Harris) can run on the economy and that the economy will remain a headache for the next president. So he throws his support behind Biden - for what it is worth - and, if not Biden, then behind the disaster who is Harris. The Democrats can run Harris and try to run a campaign that makes Biden 2020 look like Harry S Truman, or they can try to replace her and suffer the schism they will certainly undergo if they replace her with someone not named Michelle Obama. Newsom can make his run in 2028.

I realize that Goldwater was never remotely close to LBJ in the polls, whereas Trump is competitive. The similarity is the unusually high level of antipathy to both of them. Having lived through the '64 wipeout is a cautionary experience. Posted by: mnw at September 08, 2023 04:46 PM (NLIak) 450
Yup, because Ron DeQuixote tilting at the trans windmills has resulted in such GREAT government success, right ?
RIGHT ? What the actual fuck ? Now being anti-gay is some kind of positive trait for a potential Republican politician ? What the fuck ? YOu're literally leaning into the media narrative about the BS going on in Florida. What RD is doing is a net positive for his state and the schools there, but its hardly a slam dunk that its a net positive for Republicans considering the vast media narrative that the majority of people actually believe And you're now like, well, Ron may not be anti-gay ENOUGH, and Trump certainly is too pro-gay. If you think that's moving the needle in your favor ANYWHERE, you're wrong. Good fucking lord. Posted by: deadrody at September 08, 2023 04:47 PM (vFm8O) 451
“331 "DeSantis represents the return of the disgraced Ryan/Bush wing of the GOP with a little “populist” coloring. Beware."
Lol. Do you guys ever get tired of this crap?” ———— Sick burn, dude. I’m literally shaking. Were you a Cruzlim in 2015? How’d that work out for you? Are you tired of being promised the world by these puffy GOP Inc. edgelords and getting a nice greasy fist up your bum for your support? Do a little internet search, groupie, and see who owns your hero. Start with Robert Bigelow. Posted by: Joseph K at September 08, 2023 04:48 PM (WWBWe) 452
As Dave In Fla. has said in the past: there is no path to 270. Not right now anyway.
Posted by: Darrell Harris +++ And he might be right. the difference is, if a Republican not named Trump loses to Joe Biden, in this environment, it was simply impossible. Trump losing though, it's his stupid antics that will blamed. I'm assuming most people here, like Ace, aren't liberal trolls. Theyve clearly flipped on how they perceive Trump. I'm one of them also. CNN has endorsed Nikki Haley for the Republican nomination.
Proof positive that she's a total loser. FJB FCNN Posted by: jbspry at September 08, 2023 06:08 PM (s78zi) 454
Perceptions of Biden personally are also broadly negative, with 58% saying they have an unfavorable impression of him. Fewer than half of Americans, 45%, say that Biden cares about people like them, with only 33% describing him as someone they're proud to have as president.
Alternately, on the question "who is the biggest sleaze-o scumbag pervert that makes your skin crawl in American politics" Biden scored 102%, the second-highest score for this question. FJB Posted by: jbspry at September 08, 2023 06:13 PM (s78zi) 455
Hey Biden isn't that unpopular. Sure an IRS audit beats him.
Sure root canal is more popular. Yea my mother in law is more popular. Okay, STD are more popular. Okay Mooochelle is more manly. Behar has more charm But Biden isn't Obama. Posted by: Jane at September 08, 2023 10:18 PM (EcD5Y) Processing 0.07, elapsed 0.089 seconds. |
