MATTINGLY: We have brand-new CNN polling this morning, and the numbers are rough for President Biden. It could spell trouble for Democrats and the president's hopes for reelection in 2024. Still early, but Biden's approval rating has sunk to 39 percent. Nearly 60 percent of voters think Biden's policies are making the economy worse. Close to 70 percent of Democrats want somebody else to run for president. And the president's approval among Democratic voters, that's slipping. HARLOW: Now, these are all very troubling for the White House. This new CNN poll shows no clear winner between President Biden and nearly all of the leading Republican presidential candidates in these theoretical matchups, except for Nikki Haley, who leads President Biden by 6 points. Donald Trump, 1 point ahead of Biden.One point ahead. One point. And Biden won't even be the nominee. Ed Morrissey writes that CNN is actually underselling the bad news here -- because it isn't just Biden's job approval that's low. Voters also don't like him as a person.
Perceptions of Biden personally are also broadly negative, with 58% saying they have an unfavorable impression of him. Fewer than half of Americans, 45%, say that Biden cares about people like them, with only 33% describing him as someone they're proud to have as president. A smaller share of the public than ever now says that Biden inspires confidence (28%, down 7 percentage points from March) or that he has the stamina and sharpness to serve effectively as president (26%, down 6 points from March), with those declines driven largely by Democrats and independents.

I don't have a problem with Trump's endorsement of lockdowns early in the pandemic. We didn't know how bad it would become, so that was prudent. We also didn't realize that masks don't really help.

But the virus was the big event during his term. Again, it arguably is what prevented him from securing a second consecutive term.

The truth is neither Trump nor DeSantis did everything right during Covid and hindsight makes it even more obvious. DeSantis locked FL down hard including the beaches long after the 2 weeks and he could have stopped at any time. He didn't.

I never believed that and won't believe it now, and think we should push back on that with a Hell No!
I am certainly critical of Trump's covid response, but it is not something that would prohibitively keep me from voting for him.

To me, the "Trump could not have done anything else" argument may be true but it's ultimately self-defeating. If Trump is that constrained, what's the case for relecting him? So he can not do anything again because he's not able?

That isn't fair. Dave in Fla spent most of 2020 doing very solid analysis that turned out to be wrong because the scale of cheating was way more stupendous than he predicted. He didn't argue that Trump was beyond the margin of fraud, just that Trump would win handily. In his postmortem assessments, he was fairly clear about why thought he turned out to be wrong, and started reassessing things. That is the source of his opinions on a path to 270 given the knowledge we have now, post-2020.
That is precisely what most people say they want from analysts: an honest assessment of outcomes, criticism of the approach, and then retry with lessons learned.

I think it's absurd that many of these commentators think we still have a chance and/ or options. The GOP debate was a pointless ritual, as if anything is remotely normal anymore. He knows that no Democrat other than Biden (or Harris) can run on the economy and that the economy will remain a headache for the next president. So he throws his support behind Biden - for what it is worth - and, if not Biden, then behind the disaster who is Harris.
