The Morning Report — 9/8/23

Good morning, kids. The subject for this morning's disquisition is the concept of schadenfreude. I'm sure the more religious among us will admonish me for taking pleasure in this and that we should love our enemies. Well, in the spirit of that pious aspiration, I'll consider my attitude as tough love.

Shivanthi Sathanandan, the second vice chairwoman of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL), said in a Facebook post that she was violently attacked and carjacked Tuesday in front of her two children.
Four men allegedly broke Sathanandan’s leg and beat her with their fists and guns in front of her two young children at her Minneapolis home before stealing her car and fleeing the scene, she said in the post. Sathanandan, who had previously backed efforts to reduce the police force, urged fellow Minneapolis residents to “take back” their city and prosecute violent criminals in her post following the incident.
“We need to get illegal guns off of our streets, catch these young people who are running wild creating chaos across our city and HOLD THEM IN CUSTODY AND PROSECUTE THEM,” Sathanandan wrote. . .
. . . Sathanandan had previously backed efforts in 2020 to “dismantle” the Minneapolis Police Department.
“We are going to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department,” she wrote in 2020. “MPD has systematically failed the Black Community, they have failed ALL OF US. It’s time to build a new infrastructure that works for ALL communities. If you are still disagreeing with that BASIC FACT, I’m not sure what to say to you.”
Sathanandan thanked the Minneapolis officers who helped her after the carjacking, according to her post.

She thanked them? Really? Gee, I wonder what ex-police officer and now IMHO political prisoner Derek Chauvin has to say about that. Funny how, regardless of what you saw or thought you saw on the videotape of the arrest of the deceased deviant/miscreant Floyd, Chauvin and his fellow officers were doing exactly what this polliwog Commie would have praised them up and down for had they been Johnny-on-the-spot in her case. Or would she?

For those wholly unaware the DFL Party makes the current mainstream Democrat Party of which it is a part – and the word "mainstream" is relative considering its makeup today – seem almost Reaganite by comparison. It's virulently anti-American commie roots go back almost 100 years. In cases like this, when Lefties are mugged by reality, figuratively and quite literally here, their Stockholm syndrome-addled little minds kick in and focus the blame on themselves as well as the usual litany of whites, Christians, Jews, capitalism and so on.

Funny how she also made a point to say they need to get "illegal guns" off the streets. That sure doesn't follow the party line, does it? It's legally owned firearms in the hands of responsible citizens that causes all the death and suffering. At least that's what's constantly belched up by the Lefty gun-grabbers. That phrase is tantamount to heresy. Too bad she missed the report about how places where the Second Amendment is respected experience low, to the point of rare, violent gun crime and gun violence. Of course, there are other cultural/societal things going on in those places that also don't exist in the paradises on earth that are America's Democrat-controlled and dominated inner cities that also account for the low crime rates.

In any case, what a turnaround for this dame, isn't it? We shall see if her attitude changes once the blood dries and the swelling goes down. As for the cops, I assume perhaps that they didn't know who she was at the time they responded. Then again, the fact that they did respond given the attitude of the citizenry in Mogadishu-apolis especially in the wake of the Floyd takedown, is interesting. The fact that that third world shit-hole has anyone left on the force is kind of shocking given the fact that they are a red nether's breadth away at any time from suffering the same fate as Derek Chauvin for the crime of actually doing their job.

To butcher a well-known proverb, "It's an Ilhan that blows nobody any good." Speaking of swelling that won't go down, we go from the land of Bro-Fos to my hometown, the rotten apple where a titanic whirlwind is being reaped con gusto:

During a townhall on the Upper West Side on Wednesday, a visibly frustrated Adams said the arrival of 110,000 border crossers and illegal aliens since the spring of last year will lead to the destruction of New York City as waves of illegal immigration have continued unabated under President Joe Biden’s watch.
“Let me tell you something New Yorkers: Never in my life have I had a problem that I did not see an ending to. I don’t see an ending to this. I don’t see an ending to this. This issue will destroy New York City, destroy New York City. We’re getting 10,000 migrants a month,” Adams said:

One time we were just getting Venezuela, now we’re getting Ecuador, now we’re getting Russian-speaking coming through Mexico, now we’re getting Western Africa, now we’re getting people from all over the globe have made their minds up that they’re going to come through the southern part of the border and come into New York City. [Emphasis added]
And everyone is saying, ‘It’s New York City’s problem.’ Every community in this city is going to be impacted. We have a $12 billion deficit that we’re going to have to cut every service in this city is going to be impacted. All of us. [Emphasis added]
. . . The remarks come as New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) has effectively cheered on illegal immigration to the region, suggesting repeatedly that it is a boon for employers who are looking to hire foreign workers.
Most recently, Hochul announced a workforce initiative to connect recently arrived border crossers and illegal aliens with employers.

What the story leaves out is that Adams does not look in the mirror nor to his own party for the root cause of the catastrophe. He naturally and ridiculously lashed out primarily at Greg Abbott and Ron DeSantis for exporting the results of the Biden Junta's absolute erasure of our national sovereignty, which in point of fact is merely the culmination and logical, if not insane, conclusion of a decades-long open borders policy championed by the Left as a political/societal weapon with which to amass permanent political power by destroying our national identity, as well as on the pseudo-right to amass profits by destroying the American labor movement.

Adams and his ilk declared themselves to be "Sanctuary" cities and states where all immigrants, legal and most especially illegal, are welcome and to be treated as royalty. At the same time he and others declared anyone who opposed these polices were knuckle-dragging, heartless, xenophobic racists. So, what the fuck is his problem? You'd think he'd be kissing Abbott's and DeSantis' combined ass in Macy's window for giving him exactly what he and his constituents wanted.

Eric Adams is not merely a hypocrite but he's an ingrate. Psaki-Psircling back to dusky DFL Dimwit Shivanthi Sathanandan, she vocally seemed to do a complete 180, although an actual official mea culpa is yet to be forthcoming. And if history is a predictor, I'm not going to hold my breath, although you never know. Where is Eric Adams' declaration that open borders and amnesty must end?

For sure, I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for that one, because along with abortion, open borders is an absolute Leftist sacrament. To go against that would be political death, at least for this current incarnation of the Democrat Party.

The late film producer Don Simpson once quipped, "In Hollywood, it's not how you play the game, it's how you place the blame." This is exactly what Adams and others in his position are doing. For anyone to engage in self-analysis and criticism and to admit that they were wrong is a big deal. This applies by orders of magnitude when it comes to someone's world view, especially politics. Now, apply that to Democrats and Leftists and you can really see the difficulty, if not impossibility, of the situation.

UPDATE: Many commenters are making a rather compelling case that something seems very wrong about the Shivanthi Sathanandan carjacking, to the point of claiming it to have been faked. I have to say that in re-reading the story and looking at the photo, you might have a point. That said, it makes zero sense when you compare it to other faked crimes like Jussie Smollett, at least in terms of the political messaging. Still, it does serve as a political foil for my commentary, and I do stand by what I wrote, at least in that regard.

As Trump might say, we'll have to wait and see.

But how much of that $12 billion deficit is directly due to the "migrant crisis" and its cousin the "homeless crisis?" I suspect that they are actually the same budget.

Well in Fiscal 2023, NYC's homeless spending budget is $2.2 billion per the City's Department of Homeless Services. That isn't $12 billion. Even if expenditures double or triple the budget, that isn't close to $12 billion.

Adams and others are blaming the "migrant crisis" to deflect from the fiscal crisis embroiling NYC, by making them one and the same. But it's still relevant. There was a time when a Dem in good standing would dare turn our awful immigration system into a scapegoat.

It's been a long, long time since they were the latter, if they ever were.

The conversion into the former, though, is more recent. I saw it happen in real time, and it was one of the spookiest things I've ever seen. I am a Dread Millennial, and I was in college in the mid aughts. My college was particularly lefty. I was one of maybe a few dozen of conservatives - in total, students and staff - on campus. Despite that, I was treated fairly by almost everyone (one professor was unwilling to treat me fairly, and I dropped her course). Nobody agreed with me and I argued all the time - and sometimes those arguments were aggressive - but there was no problem with me being a non-conformist oddity.

Until very late 2007, when Obama started shooting to the top. Everything chilled almost overnight. Everything got hard-edged. Heterodoxy went from being a regular, tolerated thing to being shouted down hard and aggressively. It's like an invisible signal went out to everyone and they knew that *now* was their time.

If the CRE declines continue - and there is no indication that they will not - it is going to be devastating to a lot of stuff but the two biggest will be city budgets and regional banks. A lot of regional banks are going to crumble under the losses (say hello to more bailouts and more concentration into the top banking majors - and less local credit availability) and the city governments are going to go from "fiscally unhealthy" on average to "fiscally devastated and possibly bankrupt" on average.

Yeah, I don't have a big study of it - I don't even know how a big study of it could be done - but just my personal experience. It was *weird* and I was glad I was on my way out the door.

I think - and I thought then, though I didn't know how right I was - that I got out either just in time or just a touch too late but not too late to matter. If I were 3-5 years younger, I don't think I'd have made it through college (or I'd have become a drone. I like to think I'm above that kind of thing and that I'd walk away rather than lose my soul, but there is no way to test it and history shows that most people aren't).

You go after the funders of this in conservative jurisdictions. For a long time, conservatives in law schools were essentially forced into promoting acceptable opposition to the left by bleating out judicial restraint, narrow decisions, respect for precedent and such. A lot of the conservatives in law school as a result were there to cooperate and graduate so they could make money at law firms.

The left has made it hazardous for the latent conservatives at the big law firms from earning a living (witness how big Left caused King and Spaulding to fire a prominent attorney defending against gay marriage and the attempts at disbarring Trump election attorneys.

New York City is the most racist place on earth, because it is one of the most racially diverse places on earth.

You have the jews, italians, irish, blacks, mexicans, dominicans, puerto ricans, etc. etc. all with their own power base, and all with their own tammany hall style politics.

Adams, a black man who was formerly a cop, won with an uneasy coalition of ethnic groups, but primarily black, jewish, and various spanish-speaking groups. He chose a rich Jewish audience (upper west side) to make the announcement that, essentially, the city is fucked if this isn't fixed.

I imagine he alienated a large percentage of jewish people. Blacks are generally speaking very much against illegal immigration, since they're very impacted by it. Spanish groups are all over the place. So he's taking a gamble here. But this could lead to a huge schism in the racial politics in NYC, and potentially nationally with the Dems. Or maybe not. Time will tell.

"Sanctuary city" doesn't mean anything legally. It's a pretty empty phrase. It started with cities saying they would not work with ICE to deport people. Essentially, if someone is in police custody and the cops suspect he is illegal, theyre supposed to notify ICE and ICE is supposed to come pick him up after the local charges are resolved.

That assumes ICE is still deporting people, which ... the numbers are way down.

But "sanctuary cities" said they just won't cooperate with ICE. They didn't change any laws, largely, they just decided the new policy was to ignore ICE.

That's a good point. I've never had a broken leg, so I don't know how painful that is, but I'm sure it's quite agonizing. It's possible she might have gone into shock after having that happen, thus dulling the pain somewhat. But someone in shock won't have the awareness needed to take a selfie.

It's mostly "policy" stuff, though there are policies can - and should be - changed. The biggest one is that "sanctuary" policies essentially make it forbidden to charge an illegal with a felony. They have to notify ICE for felonies, but it's muddy for lesser crimes. The consequence of that is illegals don't get popped for felonies. Everything is reduced, and enforcement crashes because there's no point. These policies essentially put illegals above the law in practice, and reduce citizens to second-class status.

All that, at least, can be reversed. So can the policies that the city has to help illegals (housing, schooling, etc.). They can turn off the spigot and start actually prosecuting illegals, which will make them a very unappealing target for more of them.

Back in the day, I studied how coups tried to ensconce themselves into constitutions and laws across the globe. The so called Protected Democracies aka Turkey, Greece, Brazil, Thailand, and so on where the military took on the role of limiting the civil government by upending it if they went too far. They pretty much failed because the pool of people they would have to eliminate were simply too many for civil society to continue to function.

We are in the same boat--the leftists would love to eliminate the right but they are only about 25 percent or so of the population so you get this continuing cold civil war and the right now is beginning to engage in it as they become radicalized and they are about 35-40 percent of the population. Control of institutions in a failing kleptocracy means little in the long run--what matters is the battle of the minds and the left's rationale continues to deteriorate.

And I don't know how you prove what Trump truly believed at any moment in time. But even if he thought there was a 90% chance he lost, and 10% chance he won, he can certainly file a lawsuit.

One pattern I see among younger left leaning LIVs is a dismissive complaint of "yeah sure if I stop drinking starbucks all my financial woes will just disappear."

And there are two parts to this - one is, yes until you "make it" you might need to not indulge in "fun" things very much. This is...historically normal most people acquire more wealth as they get older and get more skills/connections.

But the other part is...yes there is a problem with our economic system. And that problem is the government. Yes yes people running businesses are "greedy" so are you. The thing that keeps their "greed" in check is what other people will voluntarily give them for goods and services.

We'll see. I suspect you're right. The problem isn't even the policy necessarily, it's that they *can* do it at all. They might as well be called "Backdoored Pseudosafe" and everyone knows it now.

This wasn't a secret - they even have procedures on their website for how to get your combination or reset code from the factory if needed. But it was *implicit* before whereas it's *explicit* now. That might end up being a killer for the company.

Right. It's one of those insulting platitudes. Like I work 10 hours a day, occasionally when I'm in a rush and don't have time to make coffee at home, I'll grab a small black iced coffee for $4. Hardly the biggest of my financial problems right now.

Also, I'm in my 30's and have a good career. I shouldn't have to worry that an occasional $5 coffee is the difference between me owning a house or not.

They always have a drive through line that spills out onto the road and since they all drive massive luxury SUVs you can't get around them either.

It's an interesting theory. I have a new solar panel and battery with some very cool data available to me. The portable solar battery has a max production of 350 watts of energy per hour. For only a very short period immediately following a heavy downpour did it approach the 350 watt number. Mainly, it's been in the 250 watt range, even with perfectly cloudless days. There's something in the air, that's for sure.

Went out a couple of mornings ago to see the space shuttle go by. Venus was bright as can be, but there was still some haze in the air. Could be the wildfires, could be water vapor at really high elevation.

It would be interesting to see year over year solar output at solar farms to confirm.

I imagine it's personal preference. I used to drink Dunkin Donuts coffee somewhat regularly, then when I went keto for a while, I cut out the cream and sugar and found Dunkins coffee undrinkable when it was black.

Starbucks is much more drinkable black, although a tad strong for my preferences.

Assume you have a $$100/month coffee habit. That's a lot of money, but it's all about perspective.

Your car loan is $500/month, your mortgage is $2,500/month, your cell phone and internet plans are $200/month, your car insurance is $150/month and your core utilities are about $450/month. You have no credit card debt. Your structural expenses are $3,800/month ($45,600/year) before you eat or buy gas/clothes/soap/coffee/etc. Your take-home pay between you and your spouse is $65,000/year. You're okay.

The spouse gets laid off and rehired at a lower salary. Your take-home pay is now $55,000/year. You're in trouble. Cut out the coffee, drop cable, get a cheaper phone, eliminate non-essentials.

But what if your spouse doesn't find a job? What if you're both laid off? What if your take-home pay is now $50,000/year? Cutting the extras ain't gonna do it. You have to sell the car. Or move. And that assumes you were responsible in the first place.

Those are *hard* answers.

If you want Coffee, Starbucks is a lousy choice. If you want candy with coffee in it, it's a great choice.

One of the reason their coffee sucks is because it is over-roasted and quite bitter. That is because you need to be able taste it through all of the candy. Starbucks coffee isn't for drinking, it's an ingredient in coffee-flavored milkshakes. If coffee-flavored milkshakes are you thing, then it's quite good. If coffee is your thing, it isn't.

Before the politicization, Starbucks was the best coffee chain ONLY if the particular barista at the particular franchise you were at knew how to properly operate the machine.

I have found that over the years, it went from 9 times out of 10 you had a very good caffe latte or cappuccino to 7 out of 10 it sucked. YMMV.

It's only an online form to request that the company remove your safe's combination from their records.

The vulnerability is still present, the extra combination is still in the electronic lock. You're better off replacing that electronic lock on the door with a 3 or 4 wheel analog dial lock, which has only one combination, and can be changed by the owner such that they are the only one who knows the combination.
