Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Revealed: Hollywood Spin Firms Are Paying Nobodies $50 Per "Review" to Fraudulently Boost Movies' Rotten Tomato ScoresMany of you are not geek culture warriors, and that's okay. So you probably do not know the backstory that makes this revelation so delicious. For years, corporate Hollywood, the media, and the political left have been claiming that all of the Woke Bombs they produce have actually been greeted enthusiastically by the public -- but Right-Wing Wreckers and Russian Intelligence Officials (seriously) are "review-bombing" huge hits like Captain Marvel, The Little Mermaid, and We Had Rangz. Corporate Hollywood fed stories to the shill media to claim that Russian Intelligence Officials -- seriously -- were interested in dividing society and encouraging Right Wing Extremism with Movie Review Disinformation. No seriously, stop smirking. The shill media wrote endless articles attacking right-leaning, or merely normie-leaning, critics of woke movies and TV shows. Weird how this shifted so quickly from "RUSSIAN BOTS ARE GIVING CAPTAIN MARVEL BAD REVIEWS AND WE MUST STOP THIS SUBVERSION OF SOCIETY" to "Gary from Nerdrotic is giving Captain Marvel bad reviews and we must attack and censor him." Almost as if Gary from Nerdrotic was the actual intended target from the beginning, and the bullshit about Russian Intelligence Services down-voting Captain Marvel was a pretext to start the censorship ball rolling. (Just as the banning of Alex Jones was a test-case to start banning anyone on the right.) Disney inveighed on Rotten Totatoes and IMDB to start rejecting negative reviews for their shitty movies, and the corrupt corporate-media aligned Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB eagerly capitulated. And now we find out the truth: That through these years of leftwing censorship and lies, it wasn't right-wingers or Russians "review bombing" these movies to change their Rotten Tomatoes scores. It was Hollywood itself, paying PR agencies who in turn paid "reviewers" $50 per review to claim that crap movies were actually good. No wonder Hollywood leapt to the claim that "Right-Wingers are conspiring to alter our films' ratings." Because Hollywood had been doing that themselves all along, and the left always -- always -- accuses you of what they themselves are doing. Vulture reveals that the Russians have been calling from inside the house all along. In 2018, a movie-publicity company called Bunker 15 took on a new project: Ophelia, a feminist retelling of Hamlet starring Daisy Ridley. Critics who had seen early screenings had published 13 reviews, seven of them negative, which translated to a score of 46 percent on the all-important aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes -- a disappointing outcome for a film with prestige aspirations and no domestic distributor. But just because the "Tomatometer" says a title is "rotten" -- scoring below 60 percent -- it doesn't need to stay that way. Bunker 15 went to work. While most film-PR companies aim to get the attention of critics from top publications, Bunker 15 takes a more bottom-up approach, recruiting obscure, often self-published critics who are nevertheless part of the pool tracked by Rotten Tomatoes. In another break from standard practice, several critics say, Bunker 15 pays them $50 or more for each review. (These payments are not typically disclosed, and Rotten Tomatoes says it prohibits "reviewing based on a financial incentive." In October of that year, an employee of the company emailed a prospective reviewer about Ophelia: "It's a Sundance film and the feeling is that it's been treated a bit harshly by some critics (I'm sure sky-high expectations were the culprit) so the teams involved feel like it would benefit from more input from different critics." "More input from different critics" is not very subtle code, and the prospective critic wrote back to ask what would happen if he hated the film. The Bunker 15 employee replied that of course journalists ("journalists," lol -- ace) are free to write whatever they like but that "super nice ones (and there are more critics like this than I expected)" often agreed not to publish bad reviews on their usual websites but to instead quarantine them on "a smaller blog that RT never sees. I think it's a very cool thing to do." If done right, the trick would help ensure that Rotten Tomatoes logged positive reviews but not negative ones. Between October 2018 and January 2019, Rotten Tomatoes added eight reviews to Ophelia's score. Seven were favorable, and most came from critics who have reviewed at least one other Bunker 15 movie. The writer of a negative review says that Bunker 15 lobbied them to change it; if the critic wanted to "give it a (barely) overall positive then I do know the editors at Rotten Tomatoes and can get it switched," a Bunker 15 employee wrote. This may explain how many reviewers will write a pan for a movie like Ghostbusters (2016) or Captain Marvel but then you'll see that negative review has been counted as a positive review in Rotten Tomatoes' very binary, positive-or-negative accounting. Companies like this are reaching out to shill reviewers and telling them that they can write negative reviews if they like -- but when they submit these reviews to Rotten Tomatoes, they should mark their negative reviews as positive. Chris Gore of Film Threat says this is barely even the tip of the iceberg. Obviously this isn't just this one lowly PR company -- every studio hires multiple firms to buy favorable reviews to game the Rotten Tomatoes system. But Rotten Tomatoes will not take a single step to stop favorable "review bombing" by paid industry shills. But they will continue claiming that when the next woke piece-of-shit gets poor reviews, it must be due to RUSSIAN INTELLIGENCE OPERATIVES, and start banning reviews as "inauthentic" and "coordinated." I remember seeing a "positive" review of Captain Marvel that was 2/5 stars. It's easy to see 3/5 rated as positive.
I know that's kind of subjective, but 3/5 isn't exactly much of an endorsement and probably shouldn't be considered "fresh". Meh. The binary is stupid. It was stupid when Siskel and Ebert got talked into doing it, and it's even more stupid when done by internet nobodies only there to shill for latest corporate product. ++++ They probably use an AI model for the first pass. This is often called "sentiment analysis" and it has its uses. My last company used to look at comments on support cases to find out if the customer was getting frustrated or hated us, so that we could shunt it automatically into special handling queues. It works, sort of. It's imprecise and cannot in the slightest handle subtlety - a "back-handed compliment" cannot be detected easily, for example - but it worked about 75% of the time. They probably automate the "sentiment analysis" and then manually intervene when their Hollywood masters come calling. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at September 11, 2023 04:38 PM (t0OGg) 34

A little insider story here. I was in the publishing business when the internet was relatively new. We were setting up an online division, and I asked how the revenue would be generated, as ad buys were based on proven metrics of viewership.
I was told that it was easy, just measure the clicks, and get paid based on that. I pointed out that anyone with half a brain would be able to spoof that, and was told that was nonsense. Fast forward to today, about half of the numbers used for ad revenue generated online are based on fraudulent numbers like this, that rely on simplistic measurements of eyeballs, and nobody has any idea of how to fix it. This is why music is dying (one can download a song for free), and streaming is going to die for the same reason. I don't mind binary reviews. Mine come down to 'recommended' or 'not recommended'.
People want movie reviews from people they can trust. Trust is the key word, once you lose that, that's it. The good thing about getting a review from a trusted friend is they know their tastes. So their "recommended or not recommended" binary is tailored to you. They know that even if they loved a horror movie, you're not into that. So they would still say, "not recommended" even though they loved it. In practice, it's binary. In reality, it's more complicated. Posted by: bonhomme at September 11, 2023 04:47 PM (0N1h0) 96

James, watched 1917 again. This time I saw the beginning and now know the meaning of the tree and trees. Both Schofield and Blake opening scene they are resting against two trees when Blake is told to report to command with Schofield. Following Blake's death Schofield joins with a mobile unit and is adamant to get the stuck truck out of a mudhole. In the background is a large hardwood tree that has been sawn down. Finally, when Schofield notifies Blake's brother of Blake's death he retreats to a lone tree and sits against it while viewing a picture of his family. Methinks this is Schofield realizing he might like to live.

We went to see-
"The Nun 2". Rotten Tomatoes is useful for these types of movies as a kind of negative indicator. The main plot point( and though it is about as softly sold as they could make it) turns on the protagonists having Christian religious faith. So, you absolutely know that the "professional" critics are going to hate that and -bingobango!- they gave TN2 a 40 or so rating. Which means the movies sucks. However, you look at the audience ratings and they're roughly 75, which means a good movie. If you've ever seen a The Nun/Conjuring movie, you know you're going to get a well made PG-13 horror movie with a bit of creepiness and minimal gore and mild shocks so as not to scarf the dating crowds or kids. And that's what you get, a well made, competent PG-13 horror show. Good but not great. On the other hand, seeing the "professional" critics fall all over themselves praising some woke movie that get low audience scores, means a truly sucktastic night at the movies. Easy. But, sad. There is not a single ranking of 4.5 or lower. Out of 70-odd providers (doctors and NP's). But that's not all. Roughly half of the overall group do not have a score listed. TJM - the jump scare thing is from the creepy pasta thing which is literally where a lot of modern horror films actually come from - short films or really short videos online.
with jump scares. kids would put the earbuds in on high and sit in their rooms in the dark late at night and apparently this was super scary now we have actual films of Lights Out and Talk to Me (which was good, unlike Lights Out) there are some other horror genres that I find interesting - sexual and body-related horror for one, of course I like the spiritual ones as well. you need to get to the very deep taboos I think, and not many modern horror producers are able to get there. but some can. It's more about splatter, especially in the slasher genre. I'm okay with that when it's done in some kind of entertaining way, but just so much is...boring as filler takes up 85% of the runtime, the final 15% being a mixture of terrible to imaginative kills, depending on the series/entry. 237 there are some other horror genres that I find interesting - sexual and body-related horror for one, of course I like the spiritual ones as well. you need to get to the very deep taboos I think, and not many modern horror producers are able to get there. but some can.
Posted by: BlackOrchid at September 11, 2023 05:11 PM (AcWfM) ========= People confuse being startled with being scared. This is why the walk through the Halloween Horror nights house didn't affect me. I was startled once, but the rest of the time I was just seeing the startle come before it hit me. Speaking of rating schemes that are rigged I find it odd, not to say statistically improbable that every cardiology provider at a large well-known regional Children's Hospital near me who has a rating on the standard 5-star scale is in the range of 4.6 to 5.0 stars. There is not a single ranking of 4.5 or lower. Out of 70-odd providers (doctors and NP's). But that's not all. Roughly half of the overall group do not have a score listed. Does anybody besides me find that suspect?

Nightmare on Elm Street was about wit, performance, and set design/special effects. Friday the 13th was about titillation and character based humor (in the few times it tried). Precious little of horror is scary, which is why I think there's such a heavy reliance on jump scares, especially these days. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, searching for more with John Huston at September 11, 2023 05:06 PM (LvTSG) I'd agree with the your general idea. 243 216 Visit Asian horror. Some of those are fantastic, though there is certainly dreck there as well. American horror certainly can be too jump scare laden, and almost every horror "franchise" has far fewer watchable movies than not from a quality standpoint. Basically, I think a great horror movie has to do a few things well.
1) Make you not want any of that sort of thing ever to happen to you. Which means it's engaged your empathy. The remake of "The Blob" is pretty much a master class in this. 2) Engage the irrational. Where things may not or won't work out because this is so outside the normal. "Suspira" though old, and a bit cornball is a good example of this. By the end, it's gone completely insane. I believe that's why it's still respected today. Carpenter's "The Thing" is a great example of both 1 & 2. Posted by: naturalfake at September 11, 2023 05:22 PM (QzZeQ) 278

The movie House (American one) definitely had the Sam Raimi "the budget sucks and the effects are beyond our reach but if we paint a good enough film maybe we can get a way with it" vibe. Carpenter did it with Halloween. Sadly, I can see where the first Friday the 13th could have worked, but the creator admitted he was just ripping off Halloween so the ball was dropped.
Don't know if that would have made any of the following movies better, but it make it easier to have a convo on 4 without saying, yeah I know the franchise is almost totally garbage ( though 6 works for me when they just threw any sort of reality out and the female protagonist is great in 6 and 7). Families are asked a series of questions including, “Using any number from 0 to 10, where 0 is the worst provider possible and 10 is the best provider possible, what number would you use to rate this provider?” NRC Health then uses a standard calculation to convert the 10-point response scale for the rated provider question to a 1- to 5-star rating scale. So, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess the "standard calculation" to convert a 10 point scale to a 5 point scale is likely to involve dividing by two? As for horror movies, I like the Conjuring/Nun movies. I am very picky about the genre, but I've gotten goosebumps watching those.
I also like The Ring. I don't like the Hellraiser - Friday the 13th type movies. And Poltergeist is ridiculous. Posted by: Pug Mahon, Not Exactly Streets Ahead at September 11, 2023 05:32 PM (T/Lqj) 327

Got around to watching The Menu last night. Don’t really get what all the hype was, movie was alright, but it didn’t knock my socks off or anything. Was mildly humorous, mildly suspenseful, and mildly thought provoking. Maybe I had it spoiled for me, but expected something more.

But, also superhero movies would be a good example of this. You're in an accident and -boom!- you're the Flash or whatever.
Flash: So that's how my character got the speed force officer. Officer: When I asked can you explain this I meant the naked 12 year old you were molesting. Posted by: A police officer interviewing Ezra Miller at September 11, 2023 05:33 PM (XqcwY) 331

I also like The Ring.
I saw the original Japanese version of "The Ring" without knowing anything about it. And when that scene came on, you know the one, I got gooseflesh and the hairs rose on the back of my neck. And that almost never happens. Just a superior horror flick. Posted by: naturalfake at September 11, 2023 05:37 PM (QzZeQ) 335

Not sure ever saw more than 5 minutes of That 70s Show
Posted by: Skip at September 11, 2023 04:58 PM (fwDg9) I lived through it the first time, and I doubt todays TV studios did better than the writers did then with Happy Days and the like recreating the 1950s. Posted by: Oldcat at September 11, 2023 07:04 PM (eoQWY) 339

It's just garbage, like Yelp and pretty much any review site. And it's not just restaurants and movies. I pity the youngsters that have had to find a locksmith, plumber, etc. on the worthless internet... when it was a very trivial matter to find a reliable honest tradesman... in the Yellow Pages. Anyone with sense kept a five year old one around to compare against. Locksmith been buying ads for five years? He's not an ex-con working out of his van, about to rip you off. That's who Google will recommend.
Yelp... what trash. "I've never had Mexican food before but I give this hot-plate place FIVE STARS." Posted by: asdf at September 11, 2023 07:12 PM (mSrN6) 341

says the filmmaker Paul Schrader. "But the system is broken. Audiences are dumber. Normal people don't go through reviews like they used to. Fuck Schrader. I don't buy that shit about audiences being dumber and no longer reading reviews. Streaming allows audiences to ignore reviews, which were always bullshit anyway. But streaming also enables studios to ignore reviews for mid-level movies as well, and they can put out a shitload of lazy crap, by structuring deals so that the mid-level films make money before they even hit the streaming servers (which is why Bruce Willis and Steven Segal have been churning out garbage for 10-20 years). The profits are small, but they're real. Posted by: IllTemperedCur, also a Disinformation Expert at September 11, 2023 07:31 PM (n+4am) Posted by: PG at September 11, 2023 07:49 PM (afPT4) 345
Rotten tomatoes sukcs and I don't give a damn what the critics say. Only the public rating matters and usually the ones with a major difference shows which movies have been hacked.
Usually the ones with a "message." Posted by: Jane at September 11, 2023 10:09 PM (EcD5Y) 346
