Is This Something?

The summer is over, and Hollywood is releasing its lower-profile, lower-budget stuff. Which is probably better than the sludge they've been pumping out over summers.

Lot of monster stuff coming.

That may have scared you. The below, however, is terrifying.

They finally adapted the old SNL sketch:

Which is not saying much since what he's made since Collateral are Miami Vice, Public Enemy, and Black Hat.

11 I actually have some small amount of hope for Exorcist Beginnings.

David Gordon Green did some interesting, if not entirely successful, things with the Halloween trilogy (I still need to see the third, but I get the sense that I wouldn't hate it). Working against him was the fact that he was trying to do some modest things in a series known for dumb formula, massive retconning to explain magical powers, and constant backpedaling, all of which the series' fans seem to really like.

Looks like a black version of "Life of Brian".

Weirdly, they had Jesus' face fogged out in the theater. Suppose that was because Jesus was also played by a Black actor, and i guess they don't want early controversy???? Not sure, but if you're going to have Black Jesus then own Black Jesus. I doubt that's going to be a huge controversy,

More controversial is likely to be be possible heretical/blasphemous treatment of Jesus as dope-smoking"Clarence" claims to be the Messiah as a way to scam chumps. Hard to tell, but this being hollywood, Christians are in for a kicking I'm sure.

Strange, how "Clarence" isn't centered around making fun of mohhammed and the Koran. Curios, huh?

179 Hodge Twins claim a 1/6 protester got raided by the FBI. During that raid, they claim the FBI called up Liberty Safes and got a code that worked to get into the protester's safe.

So either the guy didn't change the default code (unlikely), or Liberty Safes has a master unlock code they give to Feebs (very likely), or the story's false (possible).

There's "Exorcist II: The Heretic".

Perhaps the worst big budget movie ever made.

The Exorcist Possess a Trois Believer seems to be making the big error of E2TH, which is to try and move the whole exorcism thing into a non-Catholic/Christian setting with the statement the all cultures have demons and exorcisms in the first trailer.
And they bring in Regan's mom instead of an exorcist priest...What the...?

Anyway, who knows? Could be good. At least, this trailer didn't have the little girl yelling "The body and the blood!!!!" fifty gajillion times.

If you want a good movie from John Boorman, you put him in a little box with clear directions on what the end product should be.

The end product may not reflect the original instruction, but the little box will keep him from going too insane.

For Exorcist II, WB just threw money at him because Fox was making Omen movies and WB couldn't be left behind.

229 FWIW,

"Exorcist II: The Heretic" has a heck of a pedigree, with Richard Burton, Louise Fletcher, James Earl Jones (sorta) and directed by John Boorman of "Excalibur" and "Deliverance" fame.

It has the primary characteristic of great bad movies: It's trying to do =something=. I'm not sure what, exactly, but it's got a mishmash of magic and science and superstition, and some kind of message in there.

A little hard to watch, tho'.

The real sequel, "Legion" is a terrific read by Blatty (who didn't care for the Boorman film) and a very watchable movie, which had to be called "Exorcist III" because, yeah, there was that other movie fifteen years earlier.

Boorman never really engaged with the first film, dismissing it as exploitation of Linda Blair. So, when he spends the first half of Exorcist II asking the answered questions of Exorcist I, it kind of drags things down. No, we didn't need another hour of Richard Burton asking if Regan was actually possessed.

The weird African stuff is less of an issue for me than the fact that the first hour and the final half hour of the film are essentially retreads of what the first movie already did, and I don't think Boorman really realized it.

268 I see Mitch is havering, now. Better than vapor-locking.

He's improving

I've been trying to get back into Roman history, reading a lot and listening to podcasts, etc. The more I read about the Marius/Sulla/Caesar years, the more I'm stricken by the similarities between the dying days of our respective Republics, and their decayed, corrupt, self-dealing and increasingly incompetent ruling classes.

The last time I really studied that period was twenty years ago now, and the fact that we are repeating it wasn't so glaringly obvious to me then. It's oddly comforting to know that useless old shitdicks like our current overlords date back to the dawn of Western Civilization.

Cock gobbling Turtle men like McConnell have *always* been with us, ravening the body politic of their countrymen until nothing's left of it.

269 || The weird African stuff is less of an issue for me than the fact that the first hour and the final half hour of the film are essentially retreads of what the first movie already did, and I don't think Boorman really realized it.

Oh, you know the funny thing is, I've never actually watched Exorcist 2 as though it were a sequel. I just realized that. I've always just considered it a standalone 2 hour mistake.

Though if I take your comment and combine it with naturalfake's, its like the movie =couldn't= have been good. I mean, "The Exorcist" is all about getting to the point where you can't avoid the theological implications.

To go over it again and NOT get there? How could that ever be good?

In my head, I've been mulling the deterioration of Christian iconography in vampire lit. In Stoker's "Dracula", it worked even while Harker considered it "idolatry". Over time, it worked under narrower and narrower terms, until it stopped working altogether.

"Sabrina", which I had never seen before.

I'd seen the original with Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart...oh, decades ago and hadn't been impressed, however -

I rather liked the remake. Well-acted, nice direction, excellent script, interesting interplay between characters.

It was fine. Check it out.

Then I looked at some of the previous review of 1995 when it came out and everyone hated it!.

Not sure what that was all about, except that everyone can't be audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart.

Maybe there was a general critical hate-on for longish, classy love stories cuz "Meet joe Black" (199 came out around the same general and was hated by the critics.

But, when I saw it a couple of months ago, I thought it was an excellent light comedy romantic movie. Definitely check that one out.

337 326 I watched a thriller last night where one of the baddies was... A Republican Senator from Massachusetts! LOL. With the one single exception of one half of one term for Scott Brown, there hasn't been one of those since the Cabot Lodges were still a going concern.

obviously before they moved to cabot cove and got murdered by jessica fletcher.

Honestly, I kind of prefer the original Gojira over the Americanized Ray Burr US version. As I recall, it seems to have an atmosphere of existential dread that the US version lacks.

Plus, the soundtrack is rough, but awesome, and that Godzilla scream...

Of course, Gojira also has that undercurrent of "woe is us, we didn't deserve to get nuked in the Big War by the big mean Americans" whining, when they deserved a lot more, and frankly they got off light.

Amazon prime has a documentary, Boys of H company or something like that, about Iwo Jima.

Got to say I was unaware of any of the particulars of Iwo and it seemed well done to me. At one point they interviewed one of the Japanese survivors and he talked about the atomic bombing of Japan. He stated his belief that it saved uncounted Japanese lives.

Fenelon, if you like moody psychological thrillers like The Haunting, try The Innocents, with Deborah Kerr. It's a verrrry good (imo) adaptation of Henry James's Turn of the Screw. I never understood what was so scary about that book until I saw the movie, and THEN, whoa....

Eh...the Hollywood buyers of the original Godzilla movie didn't think American audiences would go along with an all japanese movie, so they chopped it up and threw in Raymond Burr for info dumps.

It blows compared to the original movie if for no other reason than it undercuts that great ending with the scientist sacrificing himself and Godzilla slow dissolving death with that great funereal version of the Godzilla theme playing.

Young naturalfake was just blown away by it.
