Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Meet The PetMorons

When I was living at a different address some years ago, this little girl started coming around at night. I left treats out for her, and she continued to come around, now during the day whenever I'd come home from work. I would have taken her in, but she was clearly someone's pet, was very open and friendly. Plus at the time, my own cat was not in the best of health.

Anyway, aside from her striking coat pattern, her main characteristic was that she talked...all the time. Seriously, unless her mouth was occupied with food, she would be meowing. The second picture is a rare shot of her with her mouth closed.

After three weeks or so, she stopped coming around. I assumed the best, that she had gone back to her real home.

Thank you for the weekend threads!

BeckoningChasm

A tiny talker! Here's hoping she made it home in fine shape! Thanks for taking care of her.

Snowy Blue.jpg

Here is our Shiba Inu, Rocky. He is a stubborn yet lovable boydog. He thinks he is sooo sexy. He is. He was attacked by a coyote and suffered some pretty bad trauma. Rocky spent several days at the emergency vet in Spokane but has bounced back very well. He does distrust strange dogs which explains his problems with our recent addition, Blue, a big and goofy-sweet Husky Malamute mix. Kind of a snowy Moron, actually.

Very long time lurker and commenter, Pecan Scandi.

Wow! That coyote encounter sounds terrible! Hope that Rocky and Blue can become closer soon. They look like great dogs.

MamaCat home from a day at the vet for blood and urine work due to feline diabetes. I knew she wasn't liking it when the vet had to go to the chainmail gloves. Good sign, though- scrappy means she's feeling better.

Awww. Taking good care of her. She looks like a sweetheart, when she's not being poked.

Hi,

Our daughter's Sky Bear, a Russian Blue, left us after 17 years. He was a really sweet cat, loves to be petted and jump on to our laps. I saw him growing up as a baby. Lydia later adopted a stray, Ghosty, and the two have been best friends forever. Ghosty would sometimes groom his brother and ambush him in jest. Ghosty is still with us.

We miss Sky but are thankful for the years he was with us. Sleep tight and RIP Sky.

Alan

So sorry you have lost Sky Bear. A lovely cat. Give some extra love to Ghosty for us.

7 You know.

I think cats can get depressed. Lucy and I lived in our little hobbit hole for 3 1/2 years before moving above ground just two weeks ago. She is running and playing and ambushing me and chasing the red dot. Her appetite has increased. She's years younger (she's only 9).

I'm sad I didn't recognize how much our subterranean home was affecting her.

8 Spatula Kitty the difficult rescue cat who has been bitey and clawey for well over a year for whatever reason decided Now she has a home and is seeking pets and skritches. She just all of a sudden when I despaired of her ever being approachable just... flipped a switch.
She has a Home now.
Truly weird no idea what did it.

16 Hi KT ! Hi Nurse! Thanks for the prayers dear, always appreciated and I'm not letting this get me down. I do still enjoy volunteering at Shep's although the past few months I haven't felt so good. We got a pit bull in last week and another new doggie on the way. Lily seems to be adjusting okay after losing her brother, Roscoe. Audrey has integrated with the other big dogs. JJ will continue to be a problem and is sadly unadoptable unless someone doesn't care he attacked another little dog and killed her.

I despaired of this cat, she would never get it together and then just barely two weeks ago just... made a decision to live in the house. I've heard stories of foster children and adopted kids doing much the same thing. It's a switch-flip and it's a long process and you simply can't push it.

30 Of adoptions, I seriously looked into foster care for a child when my marriage broke up and I lost my kid, I'd taught school etc. half my house was empty like, Why Not. I would have gone for a teenager with no real hope of 'adoption' but provided a platform. My state doesn't demand a married couple.
While I was looking into it I ended up with my own child returned.
So I have my own child back, who I did not know at all, after so many years, she was a stranger, and this weird cat. But it seems to be working out. I admit to being baffled by this cat. Also my child.

The point being, don't be afraid to adopt. They might take a while but it's like, doesn't everything worthwhile.

32 Spatula Kitty was not only aloof but seriously a roll of barbed wire. Could not get anywhere near her. The shelter had to put on the welding gloves and wrap her in a quilt to even stuff her in a carrier.
Nobody wanted this cat, but the Kid and also myself thought she was funny.
It just took a while, I guess.

I think you are referring to Henri, who is actually a Seattle local cat and quite cheery once you subtract the Satie musical soundtrack. There are several videos, all hilarious. I will not post links because Pixy hates me. One very funny one features "L'imbecile Blanc", a mentally-deficient white cat.

I've seen similar things with my cats over the years where behaviors suddenly change partially or completely. I think in some ways its age related as I have a cat that as a kitten was friendly become unwilling to be handled completely, even biting and such when I was evac-ing from a wildfire years back. Now he's often coming onto the bed (usually the female cat's domain) and rolling around and allowing touch on most of his body. Some of this might be treat related but he does it more habitually these days.

I've had cats decide that rainy days snuggling was fine but no other days, or one chair was fit for coming for affection but no other place. Cats genetically have different tolerances for socialization built in, but they can wear them down in time.

40 Afternoon, Pet People! Sorry to be late. Very hhandsome pets today; the Russian Blues especially. For some reason the cat "fancy," as it's called, the breeders and show people, insist on referring to that gray color as "blue." That makes a kind of sense. But then Dagny, who is mostly gray in color (with a little tan and white, and dark gray stripes), has been labeled "black," the Siberian fancy's word for "brown" -- which she really isn't. Her pedigree labels her as "Black amber mackerel torbie."

To be fair, her gray is pretty much a brownish-gray.

Dumb cats tend to be more amiable because they aren't aware of potential dangers. I had an abused cat I adopted that had all sorts of triggers with time I got through the barriers by coming in only with a relaxed hand from below the head level until she relaxed over some weeks. Poor cat never did relax with the other cats and had her own room until she died a few years ago.

Bad experiences or abuse are hard because a cat's whole life is learning all about its environment and it can take time for them to trust that what they remember from the past can't happen in their new world.

Posted by: Oldcat at September 09, 2023 04:46 PM (eoQWY)

42 As for cats switching attitudes: Angelique, the cream Siberian, was quite friendly when she came up to me in the empty parking lot that Saturday morning, even leaping right into my lap in the car. I even was able to carry her down to Miss Linda's. But then, after she moved in down there, she turned into the Puffball Wolverine. She insisted on sitting on your lap, but if you moved, she growled. Growled at me the same way, growled at the vet, etc. She always had to be where people were, though. She got on fine with other cats, but humans got the "Don't you dare disturb me!" routine. Thank God she always walked right into her carrier.

We suspect the Hartz Mountain flea treatment we put on her the first week might have affected her. She began to shiver, and we quickly washed her off and she seemed fine. But the growling routine began soon after. She never had physical issues, and lived another ten years. Odd, though, that she seemed to change after that.

Folds are cross bred into British Shorthairs since if two folds mate any kitten inheriting fold genes from both parents dies. British shorthairs are pretty closely allied with Persians, since by the end of WWII the breed had been virtually destroyed by rationing and had to be reconstituted from selected cats from other countries.

Folds don't have any restrictions in color, so a calico like the picture isn't forbidden and is probably pretty popular especially in Japan where its the good luck cat's color, though not the breed.

51 Banjo had a very, very bad night. Consequently, so did I. He got up and whined at the door at least 5-6 times. The last time, around 4:30 AM, he returned with a giant poop stuck to his butt. I chased him back outside, trying to figure out what to do. I finally got the hose and pummeled him with water on his backside until I got it off. Poor little guy was so pathetic but what's a mother to do?

P.S. Banjo is an 11 year-old rescue, a mix of Beagle, Chihuahua and Cairn terrier.

From what I understand, the Black means that the hair color gene on black on your cat is the dominant Black one. Norwegian Forest cats, though, cat have a mutation that modifies the black pigment into a lighter color - Amber. Similarly a 'blue" cat has a different gene that causes the pigment to be laid out on the hair differently, making it appear silver-grey. This is the dilute gene. Orange cats have a gene on the X sex determining chromosome replace the black pigment with an orangy one, which can be modified by dilute as well.

A tabby has yet another modification that has color be deposited more unevenly during growth in bands...black and pale bands looking grey from a distance as light and colored parts are exposed by overlapping hairs between the stripes.
