Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Wild Rescue Adventures

owlrescuee.jpg

On a walk with my dog we came across a barn owl that was hung up in fishing line in a tree. Fortunately Prince William County animal control in Northern Va was very responsive to my call and was on scene in about 20 mins to get him down and off to Blue Ridge rescue for treatment and rehab, if possible. Sadly not every rescue is a candidate for rehab, some are euthanized due to injury. This poor owls wing was badly broken but with a bit of luck it will recover.

Meet The PetMorons

We're not sure of the identity of the pet parent here, but:

Augie portrait.jpg

This magnificent beast is August J. Moo.
1st pic is his gotcha pic when we found him in our garage with some of our community cats. He had fleas, worms and some facial injuries.

2nd pic is his 1 year gotcha day anniversary. He currently weighs 13lbs and is about 23" long. We measured him for a harness and with a 19" chest he's too big for the largest cat harness.

Lastly is his portrait as done by Chewy's in house artist. Chewy asks for photos of your pets sitting in a Chewy box so we sent them a picture of Moo. And received this painting in our next order.

He gets along well with our 2 voids, calico and tuxedo cats.

Well, August J. Moo looks great now. Didn't look so great when you rescued him. You did good work. Nice portrait, too.

This is Dudley doing his two favorite things, lazing on the couch and preparing to go for a walk in the snow. Dudley came to us in June of 2006 we were told he was about two years old at the time. Dudley was the most gentle dog I have ever known, he brought smiles to everyone he met on his frequent walks, sadly while his appearance belied his age, the years caught up to him. This past week we had to say goodbye to my very long time buddy, companion, and friend. As I very often said "you are a good boy Dud, I love you."

SteveF

Awww. . . How you must miss Dudley. What a sweet face.

Our mailbox is kinda light this week, so here is our official Swiss guide dog Gioga on tour in the Swiss country side with a few of her canine friends.

4 Lovely pets, as always.

Kaylee the Calico Kitty Cat (the cutest little cat of all) says, "Hello!"

Hexie has a new favorite game where she tries to catch her own tail. It's like she has a form of body dysmorphia where she doesn't recognize her tail as belonging to her.

11 Howdy folks!

Lucy the Fink is still adjusting to our recent move upstairs. She loves chasing the red dot up and down the stairs and our games of "hide and seek" are much more challenging. She still gets worried when she can't find me and meows with a certain anxious trill.

She does enjoy chattering at all the creatures in the courtyard!

16 Hope the owl makes it. Once came upon an owl being tormented by crows in a short palm tree at a street corner. The owl had trouble navigating in the sunlight.

They will lick a potato chip, though, to get salt and oil off it. If you hold a chip patiently in front of them. As you should.

Posted by: m at September 02, 2023 04:02 PM (30MvH)

18 Been a few years now without cats but decades with, I think at least cat would like salt off the potato chips if not eat them. Chocolate might as well have been rocks to ours

19 Today we are celebrating the second anniversary of the day that our rescue dog, Luna, came to live here. (Luna has been featured on two previous pet threads.)

We were originally going to foster her to see if we would be good dog parents after many years of being pet-less, but within 24 hours we knew we would be her forever home. She's only gotten better in the last two years. I thank God every day that she came to live with us--for our sake as well as hers.

24 Afternoon, all! Cool animules this week! August J. Moo looks much like my late Chekov D. Siberian, who had a little more black, an almost symmetrical mask, on his face, but the same kind of coat and green eyes. And who grew to be 12 lbs. not fat.

The shepherd-looking dog in the background of Gioga's first pic looks like the way I picture a werewolf. The light grey dog seen from behind with the fluffy curled white tail looks much more friendly, as does Gioga.

26 Monday marks one year since I adopted little Dagny Sophia, La Siberienne. Dagny is now almost 18 months old, still small but growing, I think, and still gallops and plays like a kitten. If I leave a kitchen cabinet, even one above a counter, open for even a few moments, she will come flying and leap into it, never mind that it contains Human Things. Last month I paid for and received her registration and pedigree, so now I know the names and coat colors of her parents, grandparents, and great-grands. (Damn, what long names.)

Big black cat Stirling the Duke of Vicksburg still milk-treads my arm several mornings a week: only when I'm in bed and first wake up, not only when he's hungry. He's not fond of being picked up, possibly because he's big. But unless he's playing with Dagny, he's always in the same room with me, as is she.

27 Ah, late to the pet thread! Late is better than never.
All the threads are light commenting today, but thanks anyway for the thread. Love the before/after pictures of the black and white kitty.

I'll agree, with the caveat that my red tabby as a boy, named Rusty, loved slivers of olives -- reacted to them as if they were catnip, and ate them too -- and would nibble a crumb or two of Vanilla Wafers now and then.

It's the Pepsi that really puts the lie to the pic, though! Pepsi? Really?

32 I posted this few weeks ago on a dead thread. Sounds like I'm tooting my own horn but what the heck. Anyone here would have done the same thing.
-----

I had a rescue puppy for a while. I was at Ft. Gordon, GA in the spring of 1970. I was staying in the BOQ (bachelors officers quarters) at the time. I went to the post office one Sunday and saw something moving in the bushes. It was a little puppy. His eves were still closed and his umbilical was still raw. Couldn't have been more that a day or two old when someone dumped him.

I raised him on milk and syrup through a baby bottle. I carried him around tucked between my fatique blouse and undershirt, as all I had for transportation was a Honda 90 motorcycle at the time. Kept him on one of my sweaters in a paper bag otherwise. Had a clock ticking under the sweater.

The BOQ there was a part of the recovery wing the Ft Gordon hospital. It was the amputee center for the Army then. I was probably the only guy staying there that had all of his arms and legs.

When puppy was getting around and was almost on solid food I gave him to a one legged guy who was going home. Hope they comforted one another.

34 Just came in from the lake. Not pets, but neighbor came over and said skunks are migrating through the neighborhood. He's shot two yesterday. Pretty stinky around the house.

He noticed our kid gate at opening of deck and thought we'd put it to keep skunks off our deck. We put it up to keep out cats from running down the stairs.
