Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

A cat with a job.

Meet The PetMorons

tu under fern.jpg

The kids have been on before, but mom moved in some new plants and Henrietta Hot Paws thinks she's hiding in the trees, while Tutti Fruitti has taken her old spot under the fern! They love to be outside, but it has been too hot lately to be out there for very long! The new Jatropa is doing okay, though.

Nan in AZ

Glad to see the lovely kitties relaxing and the plants doing okay in their new home.

From Alan:

Terrible camera but that's a feral cat in the shade on top of carguy landlord's 1919 Chandler Big Six with a view of the neighbors door where goodies come out of.

So, which neighbor has the goodies? Lovely cat. Our garden kitties like car roofs, too. I don't know what a Chandler 1919 Big Six is, though.

From Jeff: Cat learned to code???

Hi:

We had a cat (worded in that order for self-respect reasons) that we rescued in the middle of a long ago Michigan winter.

Tibby packed a lot of attitude into that little head.

She knew her place.

tibbyyy2.jpg

And just like an attention-starved super model, started vamping the moment a camera appeared.

tibbyyy3.jpg

Sadly, several months ago after 18 years of reigning over all she surveyed, she crossed the rainbow bridge.

Then, in a nightmare-fuel moment, returned. . .

Awww. How you must miss her. Thanks for the purrfect PetMoron story.

4 Yay Pet thread! Well..still without internet but the local library is very quiet and comfortable. Shep's Place lost another great dog yesterday. Roscoe crossed the rainbow bridge after battling cancer for a year. His sister Lily is doing ok but they have been together for 12 years. I don't know how well she'll do in the long run.

17 Mentioned this on Friday, but got some good news this week.

Ajax does not have cancer.

He has been having issues with his mouth. Inflammation and pain when opening his mouth too wide (yawning.) The vet was worried it was either cancer (sarcoma) or auto-immune. So, I had them do the biopsy and it turned out to be auto-immune, which is treatable with steroids.

It was a huge relief when I got the call on Friday.

Fuck you cancer. You lose this one.

My guess is not - I've lived with this situation. My Old Cat was in onlycat mode and would not play well with others.

Wise decision against trying to save her. Little can be done and it will drain your purse (or end up on your credit card, which happened to me). It feels like emotional blackmail somehow.

I went through much the same struggle eighteen months ago with Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat. Without doubt I loved him. But there were only so many resources (= money) I could throw at his health troubles, esp. since no one could settle on a diagnosis. And I miss him still.

This morning I realized today would have been his sixteenth birthday. The date is right there on his pedigree.

29 A question for y'all.
My dog Joe is getting along in years. About 13. He is a terrier mix, about 17 lbs and generally happy and healthy. I've noticed that come the evening when we are all settled in for reading or tv, he will lay down and after a bit jump up like something has bit him. He will do this three or four times an evening.
Internet indicates its probably nothing to worry about. But I'm curious if others know of this?

Posted by: Diogenes at August 26, 2023 04:13 PM (hv9bm)

30 The wife has procured a tracking device for my son's cat Porgy. Its a lot of fun but not all that accurate. It makes her and son feel better now that Porgy is to join Future Leader in Richmond with neighbors that have two Pitt Bulls in the backyard. Porgy is the only cat I've ever seen that can climb down trees head first. He's moar like a flying squirrel than a cat in that regard.

Posted by: Pudinhead at August 26, 2023 04:15 PM (ifUkZ)

31 Yeah, pretty close to 100 today and tomorrow. Next week, the weather mavens say, a dizzying plunge in temps to 92-93. Oh, joy. Break out the anoraks and gloves.

Since the cats don't go out and I do, guess who's having a tough time with the weather?

Stirling the Big Black sleeps with me often, or at least I find him next to me when I wake up. He's milk-treaded me twice today. Right now he's curled up, grooming himself, on the cushion next to me. Little Dagny the Siberian princess is around someplace. She's grayish-brown with only a little white, so it's hard to see her sometimes.

33 International Dog Day. Duh.

Posted by: Pudinhead at August 26, 2023 04:18 PM (ifUkZ)

34 Got an email reminder from the vet this week, that Dagny is due for rabies vaccination and another one. Since Stirling cost me close to $250 for his last vax visit (to be fair, there was also a topical deworming med), I'm thinking I might wait on this for a while. She doesn't go out and other cats don't come in. I doubt she's at risk for rabies.

The skinny stray, Alfred the Gray, meets me in the parking lot sometimes in the afternoon or in the early morning, and follows me back to my place for a dry food handout. I dont know why Miss Linda won't take him in. He's handsome, if skinny, and good-natured. I don't really want to take him to the SPCA; his life may not be much, but I don't want him put to sleep.

Alfred the Gray turns up outside her door too, and follows her down here. She has no cat food at present, having no cats. There's been a little black longhaired feral showing up for chow outside her door for a couple of years, and she was feeding that cat, who refused to come within petting range. Linda used to say it was a grandchild of my late black longhair Wolf from his outdoor days, and thus my responsibility. I said, "No way. Cats don't have paternity suits."

45 Last week, we came home and I found that the covers on the bed were rumpled and a pillow was on the floor.

I pointed to it and sternly scolded Daisy Dog, "Did you get up on the bed?"

Daisy does guilty really well, but her reaction this time was exaggerated, eyes open, cowering down and backing up. Like I was going to hurt her. I immediately shifted to sympathy and kindness and pets of reassurance that it was not really a big deal.

I think before she was found loose on the highway, she maybe had some bad experiences. In our year and a half with her, mostly we have worked those out, but once in a while it seems to show. She is such a good, smart dog.

49 I heard the most heart warming story today. A friend's son is driving down the road and sees the guy in front of him throw a kitten out the window onto the road. Son stops and picks up
the kitten, umbilical cord barely dry. He takes the kitten to the vet and they treat the cut lip when the baby hit the pavement Son and wife bottle feed this baby every two hours even taking it to work to keep it fed
Kitten is now 8 weeks old and thriving.

Miss Linda is fond of saying Stirling had a "hardscrabble" life in Vicksburg before I adopted him. I doubt his mother and all of his litter were thrown out of a car before the shelter people took them in. So I figure Stirling was already ahead on points.

(Hardscrabble? Yeah, right. He was hand-reared after his mother died of an infection at the shelter, we were told, and clearly he likes humans.)

75 "sees the guy in front of him throw a kitten out the window onto the road"

The neighbor's grand-daughter had that same experience. Some people are just beyond cruel.

Years ago, I was walking by the highway, four lane with a center left-turn (aka suicide) lane. A car whizzes by and I see a little gray ball of fur tumble into the center lane and stand there in fighting stance, hissing. At some risk from traffic, I got to the critter and got back off the road. It was a medium-hair gray kitten, with much blood, and I didn't expect it to be ok.

Took it back to the office, washed it off, and it turned out to only have a cut lip! Daughter came in at that point and wondered why I was holding a wet rat.

Fortune was my dearest pet for years. One day a nearly-identical cat moved in. General Gray we called him. Shortly after that, don't know why, Fortune was gone. Was always hard to see the General, because I kept expecting it to be Fortune.

So hard. 💔

She had evidently encountered a fox and had acquired rabies despite being vaccinated and showing no wounds. She didn't suffer long as she passed the Thursday at the vets office on after she had a seizure on Wednesday.
An excellent climber, she was very playful and much preferred play over any touching. She was often "prey" to the other cats when playing with them but there were times you could see her chasing her black big brother across the yard.
She will be missed.

78 Wolfus, Jane is busy dealing with so much right now. She said to say Hi to every body and she will be back when she can.

79 Jewells45 - ICYMI, posted thanks this morning for your reply in last week's prayer thread. It helped. Praying for you, of course.

That cat has remarkable green eyes. They stand out even more since the fur around them is orange and white.

My departed calico kitty had the most bright beautiful green eyes I've ever seen on a cat. Still miss her three years later.

82 I've always wondered how Angelique, the stray Siberian, came to be wandering the empty parking lot that Saturday morning about twenty years ago. She jumped into the car onto my lap, and I took her to Linda's. A newspaper ad and checking with local vets turned up nothing. How did what was probably a purebred Siberian happen to be in that rundown neighborhood to begin with? Did she growl at somebody (she was known to do that with us), somebody who "accidentally on purpose" left the door open, and she galloped out? But that area's dwellers, then as now, were more likely to spend money on giant chrome rims than on a pet cat. How did she get there to start with?

I guess we'll never know. (Interestingly, Anne Rice gave away her Siberians not long before that. . . .)

85 OT but breaking important: melanotics shooting up Boston parade, 8 down so far...
Posted by: Important

“This morning’s shooting is not related to the parade that occurred, since it happened on the outskirts of it,” Cox said. “Very early in the investigation but it seems to potentially be maybe two groups having some type of altercation.”

-
Yeah, "groups" are known to have altercations.

90 The way I imagine it is, one of the people who worked for Anne Rice, perhaps her cleaning staff, admired the Siberians. Anne gave her one, and she brought it home to the area where I found Angelique (or she found me). Angelique was known to growl at people. One Saturday morning her exasperated husband had enough and "accidentally on purpose" left the door open, and Angelique fled. "Sorry, honey, your cat ran away!" was probably his explanation when she got home.

Doesn't explain why her human didn't try to find her, though. (Hey, it's just my imagination. . . .)

92 Missed it by >< getting in from lake before getting drenched in pop-up thunderstorm. Betty is hiding somewhere downstairs, while Bella is sitting comfortably next to me in "her" cigar chair.

93 How did Bob Barker react to the Dylan of Bud Light Fame?

Adam Sandler got his clock cleaned, but that was because he was a pussy hockey player.

95 There was a tv show where a guy was bummed because his cat, who was 19 years old, was going to die. Upon the cat's demise, an attractive coworker had mourning sex with the guy. A few days later, the guy inquired as to the attractive woman's interest in another sexual encounter to which she responded by suggesting the guy get another cat. A few days after that, they guy told the hottie that he had taken her advice and rescued another cat. He also let her know that the rescue was 21 years old.
