Dog Art, Happy Dog

Happy Dog_082.jpg

This image dates back to 1991 and a simple afternoon visit to Audubon Park's Simon Gumbel fountain & wading pool one sticky summer day. This lucky puppeh was just sitting there enjoying the cool and made a great image that embodies the simplicity of happiness. Things don't need to be complicated and/or expensive to be enjoyed - a cool pool on a hot day is oftentimes enough - as it was for this Happy Puppeh. I don't know the breed, but I'd take a SWAG (i.e., a 'guess') that it's likely to be in the Retriever family. As always, use as you deem Right, Fit, and Proper . . . enjoy.

The Horde comes through with more great Pet History:

The turnspit dog is an extinct short-legged, long-bodied dog bred to run on a wheel, called a turnspit or dog wheel, to turn meat.

Referred to as the kitchen dog or cooking dog, the first mention of these little dogs was made in 1576. By 1850 the dogs had become scarce and by 1900 it seemed as though there were none left.

Meet The PetMorons

linconn.jpg

After the terrible year we had, we decided to get a puppy. This is 10 week old Lincoln. He is a Weimaraner obviously. This is our third Weimie and yes he has his crazy times. But he has made my husband and me smile, and he is a cuddle bug. He plays with our daughters dobermans and runs them around the yard. He is always up for a ride and loves the rv. We start traveling in September so he's going to be a good travel buddy.

Peggy

Lincoln looks like a great dog! Legs too long to be a turnspit dog. Travel buddy is better!

Sasha ml.jpg

This is Sasha, a wonderfully polite extra fuzzy tabby cat that I adopted in her golden years. She was about 10 or so when I got her, and she hung around for another four years, so I guess she liked me. She's been gone for quite a long time, but I still think fondly of that ol' bag of hair.

Once in a blue moon, I post as Ask Mr. Lizard. Most of the time, people already said what I wanted to, so I lurk.

Thanks for sharing Sasha's photo and story. A beautiful cat!

Musya.jpg

We recently had to say goodbye to our little rescue Borzoi girl Musya. She had reached the wonderful age of 13 years and 9 months old.

She came to us from a terrible situation and was in bad shape when she arrived. With care and attention she recovered, but her age and health (heartworm positive) meant she could not be rehomed and so she lived out her life here. For the three years Musya lived with us, she hit the jackpot: she was treated exactly as our own homebreds, with clean water, all the nourishing food she could eat, bones, toys and treats, shelter, a comfortable bed, kind words and ear noogies. She fit in well and was the perfect lady, never giving us any trouble at all. Sadly, there was always around her an air of anxiety, as though she was scared the good life she was leading was an illusion that might disappear at any moment.

She was tiny but sassy. One evening big Dan trotted down to visit her and she let him know in no uncertain terms who was boss. It was funny to see the huge hulking boy beating a flustered retreat before the fierce little girl. It's too bad that she could not have lived her whole life with us because we could see she would have been a real firecracker.

Rest well, sweetie. And wait for us.

Hadrian the Seventh

So sorry to learn about the loss of Musya. It sounds like she was full of personality, and could have had more personality under better circumstances. I wish she had had had more time with you, too. Such a sweet face.

InkedSkeet.jpg

KT,

We have had pets our whole lives. Early on in the Mr. & Mrs. endeavour we got our first pet Rex, a Belgian Shepherd. He was a wonderful companion, caring and careful around toddlers, in addition to being a trickster. We continued on in the same approximate size dogs until we had to put down our last one. About three years ago Mrs. asked to go to a shelter in a neighboring county to look at and apply for a stray. Skeeter has a gypsy soul, I am convinced someone read him Kerouac and Ginsburg while he was encamped at the shelter. He has a wandering soul along with the heart of an assassin. He is a stone cold killer of anything from lizards to rats to rabbits. Elevation is the only thing keeping the squirrels safe, otherwise I would have tails littering the yard. After all that he is a sweetheart who loves his mama and really just wants a scratch behind the ear.

Here he is at the dog park. He has to be on the "Big Dog" side as he terrorizes the old ladies lap dogs.

Best,
rdohd

Great photo of another dog full of personality!

Notes: Would the parent of the pet with the name containing "Moo" please provide a name for yourself so we can post your information?

Wildlife adventure next week, I think.

UPDATE: Can you love someone like a good ol' dog? Think about it.

Thanks to Roger for sending this in.

Cats have whiskers all over their bodies. If you look closely, they have these longer "tactile hairs" on their legs as well.

She has three barks. She growls. I've never heard her snarl but she probably ca. She whistles. She chuffs and she grumbles. Finally she does try to talk with lots of roo roos.
Plus there's lots of body language.

32 My cat Dexter is now 14. He's slowing down, just like me. Sleeps 18 hours a day (I sleep about 6). I was thinking of getting a younger cat, then a local black cat starting hanging out in my yard. It won't approach me yet, but yesterday it caught a mouse in my yard and it played with it for about 15 minutes. Such a joy to see the youngster frolic about, mercilessly tossing the poor rodent high in the air, catching it on the way down. I laughed.

34 Had an extra dog for a day this week. Adult female black lab reported hanging around by a neighbor. Sure enough, late evening, while tossing a ball for Daisy the excitable Malinois, suddenly there's a big black lab. No collar. Daisy and the Lab tussled a bit, but nothing serious. I easily dragged Daisy to her short tether on the porch. We had an old collar from dear old Gimli's day that slipped on over the Lab's head and hooked her up. The pups could get close enough to each other to play, although Daisy was much more into it than the aloof Lab.

Fortunately, she had a chip, which gave us a name, and Daughter looked on the book of face and found a guy reporting his missing Lab, under that name. So she went home. She had to have gone five miles to find us, though. We couldn't have kept her. Her name was Maisey, and that just wouldn't work with Daisy!

Lab slipped the tether three ways. Unhooked from the stake. Unhooked the tether from the collar. Also slipped the collar off. Each time, she just showed up at the front door. Didn't really need to tie her up, I guess.

Boy, was her bark louder, deeper, and more constant than Daisy's. Pretty nice doggie.

Ony the cat was wary.

Good point. Even more of a mutant, then, with no eyes or face!

Afternoon, all! Sasha the late longhair was a beauty -- brilliant eye color.

Feline criminals Stirling and Dagny are here with me; they usually sleep alongside me when I nap, and during part of the night as well. This week I registered Little Dagny with TICA this week, and I downloaded her three-generations pedigree. Man, those cats got long names. Stirling has no pedigree, and so I've created him "Duke of Vicksburg."

Burt, which do you find glorious: the mentally-unsettling, mind-destroying clatter of the cicadas, or the blessed freedom from it?

59 I think the horrible Tortoiseshell is kinda nasty-ing her way. She's getting skinny, drinking a lot, generally being bitchy but not clawey like she's always been. I think she might be 15? Pretty good run for a rescue street cat. Sent me to the doctor three times, the one she hid from me 3 days after hooking me in the upper lip while shaving.
At least she understands consequences, she just generally didn't care.
But she's getting old and I'm not spending a pile of money on a cat that's been living on borrowed time for 15 years.

Good question. I think it's mostly nostalgia. We didn't have them in Colorado, where I was. They just showed up a couple weeks ago, and they are deafening when you pass whichever tree they're all occupying.

I may find them less appealing when they start flying around. Cicadas fly like Asians drive.

Rooster Cogburn named the cat who lived at his digs after Price. I thought the spelling was "StErling," though. Stirling's name came from British race car driver Stirling Moss, Stirling shave products, and Rattray's Stirling Flake tobacco (which I've never tried -- it's prob. too strong for me -- but I liked the name).

Good question. I think it's mostly nostalgia. We didn't have them in Colorado, where I was. They just showed up a couple weeks ago, and they are deafening when you pass whichever tree they're all occupying.

I may find them less appealing when they start flying around. Cicadas fly like Asians drive.

To me they mean hot humid weather is here, which I hate. When the rare miracle occurs and the humidity drops, they shut up. I think that rising-falling roar must be the last sound a loony hears before he gets out on the Interstate, floors the gas pedal, and shuts his eyes.

Their absence was yet another reason I liked CO.

But she's getting old and I'm not spending a pile of money on a cat that's been living on borrowed time for 15 years.

We had one tortie, long-haired. Had her shaved one time, and it was astonishing how small she was, when her hair was cut off.

She was quite timid, but she had this thing where, when the orange boy (BCE) would torment the black cat, who was even more timid than she, the tortie would follow the fracas, like she was she was running toward a train derailment, to see all the blood and fire and general chaos.

I'm sure that's it. They're associated with the humidity. Seems the grasshoppers more or less disappeared around the same time the cicadas started their symphony. Not sure if that's related or not.

One more note about Musya. She quickly became attached to me. When I went into her pen, she would rush over and bury her face against me ("schnoobling", we call it). She'd talk to me too and was always excited to get her evening biscuit or weekly bone.

It's an unfailing source of amazement to me how the Borzoi we've rescued from some truly horrific circumstances, who come to us unsocialized and frightened out of their wits, are almost always recover and are able to learn to fit in with life here. Might be a lesson for us bipedals.

I doubt I've ever rescued a cat from a truly horrible environment. Big black Wolf had been left behind by his so-called humans when they got evicted, but he was making a living going door to door for handouts and no doubt killing vermin. He wasn't mistreated that I knew of, and he didn't act like it. The late Marie-Antoinette, we were told, was thrown on the street when her human died, and was rescued soon after, but she'd clearly been the queen before that happened.

That's failing kidneys. I'm pretty familiar with that. Cats' kidneys are meant to function in the wild where cats don't live as long as they do in captivity. As a result, one of the most common ways housecats die is age-related kidney failure. You can give subcutaneous fluids for awhile but in the end, when those suckers go, there's nothing you can do. It's not an especially painful death if there's nothing else going on.

When the vet was getting her work together, he was in my arms, with his head buried between my arm and chest. I know it was because of the pain he was in, but egad was it the gentlest, most trusting thing he'd ever done in his life.

And when he was gone, I caught a glimpse of his eyes, even though the vet tried to avoid me seeing him that way. Still, I'm glad I did. Made it more... real?

When BCE was younger, he had kidney problems, and we saw the behaviors. Trying to void his bladder, unable to do so, drinking a lot, getting thinner.

We managed to get him surgery that rerouted his plumbing, and he never had any problems with it after that. Living about another decade before developing a brain tumor. Had we gotten to the point of kidney failure... yeah, it would have been lights out. They don't do kitty kidney transplants.

Would be cool to redo it, just without the rear-facing whiskers. If I knew how to p'shop, would do it myself because I think I'd really enjoy looking at something like that.
