Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Ms. Marvel Fails to Get Even a Million Viewers on the ABC Broadcast Network; New Star Wars Series "Ahsoka" Bombs on DisneyDisney has The Marvels coming up in November, featuring a nominal lead that no one likes, and two minor characters introduced on D-Minus: Ms. Marvel and, what is she called?, Spectrum or Binary or whoever she is supposed to be. You don't know what I'm talking about? Exactly. That's Disney's problem: They have a superHERo team up movie featuring one superHERo no one likes and two superHERoes no one knows. To remedy this, and to try to fill the gaps in its schedule opened by the strikes, Disney ran the formerly-D-Minus-exclusive show Ms. Marvel on the broadcast network ABC. Ms. Marvel already had the distinction of being the lowest-rated D-Minus superHERo show ever. But maybe it would catch fire on broadcast TV Nah, cuz. In the below chart, "HH" means households, P+2 is, I think, the total audience both for the night the show aired plus anyone who watched it on replay in the next two days, and P18-49 means viewers aged 18 to 49.![]() ![]() Andre from Midnight's Edge is guessing that Disney is rigging the numbers by 1, combining the viewership of two episodes (which no one does -- ratings are reported on a single-episode basis) and, using a trick that Amazon pulled to inflate its Rings of Power viewership, to 2, assume that any household tuned into the show must have four people watching it, quadrupling the number of viewers with a single assumption. Here's a sad truth: People, families, even couples don't watch TV together very often. TV no longer aims at capturing a wide audience, so that a father can watch with a daughter. It narrowcasts to one specific niche (which is almost always White Leftwing Urban Woman, which just happens to also be the demographic of most TV executives). So maybe in the 1970s you could multiply the number of households tuned into Happy Days by four and get a rough guess of your total viewership. But not any longer. Men just don't watch TV anymore (except for sports and some reality-type stuff and documentaries, etc.) because virtually none of it is made for men. Younger people mostly watch reality TV... or TikTok. Older people tend to watch more news because, again, tv shows aren't made for them. Multiplying by four is not an acceptable fudge factor any longer. And comparing Ahsoka's ratings to Andor's (who?) does Ahsoka no good, Andre points out. Andor is about one character in an ensemble movie (Rogue One) who is already dead. And already-dead characters do not make for big ratings in subsequent flashback stories. Ask Black Widow. Ahsoka, despite being obscure, is less obscure than Andor with Star Wars fans-- she was a major character on the Clone Wars (or whatever) cartoon and has been an established character for 20 years. Also: It's generally agreed that no one bothered watching Andor, not even the YouTube geek culture critics who literally make money off watching bad Disney television, so saying it did slightly better than Andor is not a flex. Midnight's Edge reports that Disney is using the cover of the strikes -- and the doctrine of force majeure that the strikes grant it -- to cancel contracts and even completed series to save money. Reportedly they've fired the Rick & Morty writes responsible for Quantumania and Multiverse of Madness, who were under contract to write the two upcoming Avengers movies. (They're keeping the Rick and Morty writer, Jessica Guo, responsible for the series that killed the Marvel brand, She-Hulk.) They've even cancelled two shows that were already completed: The Spiderwick Chronicles and Nautilus. They might be following the Warner Bros. plan of burying the projects and then claiming a tax write-off. Is there anything that can save D-Minus, then? Well, just the one thing we've all been waiting for. ![]() Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Disney Minus hides its viewership figures so this is a proxy measure for Disney Minus' ratings. If their shows can't even pull 1,000,000 households when the show is offered for free to anyone who can receive a local ABC signal (which is to say, almost anyone in America who owns a TV), how many people could possibly be running it on the meh-sized streaming service D-Minus?
++++ The fact that the show has been out for some time on Disney+ - combined with the large number of Disney+ subscribers in the United States - means that this show already had wide release and most of target market has already viewed it. The release on linear TV is an effort to expand the audience beyond the scope of those who already had access to it on the premier streaming platform. The rebroadcast of the program on linear television properties has achieved its goal of exposing more people to the story and its characters, and it has been a successful arrow in the marketing quiver for The Marvels. To spin this as some kind of failure because only the small part of the market that is not already addressed through Disney+ was in the original scope is a disingenuous take. ++++ Samba and other analysis firms like Nielsen must estimate viewership based on inference. Disney itself does not have that limitation, as the Company has direct access to the applicable data. While the third-party ratings companies are sometimes accurate, they are not always accurate and the Company's numbers are, in all cases, more reliable because they do not depend on inference. The detailed methodology cannot be disclosed due to considerations around intellectual property, trade secrets, contractual obligations and other factors, but the Company remains a trustworthy source to provide highly accurate bottom-line figures. ++++ Which is the great irony underneath this. Historically, Disney sucked at content for men and boys. They were the princess company, and the little kids company. Disney wanted to court the male audience, and that is one of the reasons that it bought both Marvel Studios *and* Lucasfilm. They explicitly wanted to expand their addressable market to include boys. The unknown superhero -probably Spectrum (I think that's one of the names she went by at one point) went by the name Captain Marvel, at one point, when the original alien male hero of that name was dead, and before the current one started using it. Thus why she's in a show called "Marvels".
And I liked her back then. But Marvel apparently couldn't figure out what to do with her beyond "supporting character on the Avengers", dropped her for a while, and then occasionally brought her back under different names (since they kept giving her names to other characters). As for Ahsoka, the numbers are worse than I think you realize. Rebels was a popular animated Star Wars series. The leads in Ahsoka are basically the surviving leads from Rebels, and their motivation is to find the MIA member of their team. Thrawn, who has been teased in the trailers, was the villain of the later seasons of Rebels, and went MIA along with the missing team member. So Ahsoka is being advertised as the continuation of a popular series... and still doing poorly. Posted by: junior at August 30, 2023 05:01 PM (VAV9W) 130

Drinker and friends mocked the slow motion atmospheric stuff too. Too much walking, staring, barely talking, more walking with even more panoramic views, etc. They didn't really talk about the why though. I don't think they're trying to write the powerful female characters as male per se; or that they don't know how to write traditionally strong female characters. I suspect they think stoicism will appear to male audiences regardless of character gender, and somehow, this style of "epic" storytelling will win back the male audience despite the abundance of female leads. It seems like weirdly desperate reverse engineering. Posted by: Walter Freeman at August 30, 2023 05:04 PM (k1Qly) 154

While it may not be fair, but Kathleen Kennedy destroyed Star Wars for me. Even the originals. She singlehandedly destroyed a fantastic franchise, and no one had the balls to fire this bitch.
Rumor is that she had a contract that stated she could not be fired for cause. IOW, they'd have to catch her doing something that was actually illegal to get rid of her. I imagine Disney is now furiously digging through absolutely everything to find evidence of anything that could be considered a crime. They're hasn't been a shoe Ive really enjoyed. Good Omens 2 was fun, but rather pointless. I'm about to finish season 1 of Joe Picket, which is pretty unoriginal. Tokyo Vice was good, but more for the look and feeling almost of a 90s noir anime, but story and acting aren't great. Billions Season 6 became communist propiganda that tries to justify government using its power for petty revenge. Bear 2 felt like they had 2 pages of script and just added filler (plus a show about Italians without a single Italian) Just started The Offer and it feels campy in a bad way. Evil went from being interesting to just feeling complete Anti-Christian. Just started Your Homor, which already seems predictable and where they just make everything dark to claim it's good cinematography. Barry has become shitier and shitier by the season. The Resort hasn't been bad. Same with That Fool which is very funny. @186: "how to do long-form visual storytelling ..."
Long form also begs for character driven storytelling with more unspoken internal and interpersonal conflict. Seems obvious now, but a movie franchise hellbent on selling kids toys doesn't seem like a good fit for television. There once was an expectation that Star Wars shows would somehow be more thoughtful and grown up, but they didn't start there, and who knows how big that audience really is. It could be too niche for big money returns like Star Trek was before they tried turning that into Star Wars. Disney tried with The Mandalorian, but that quickly morphed into a Baby Yoda show. They don't only not know how to tell a story, they don't know how to live a life. They have no conception of toil or adversity or overcoming setbacks, because they've never done that. They imagine toil (i have to go to work to earn money?!) or setbacks (i didn't get the one job i applied for?!) in their life... but it isn't real, so they can't even conceptualize the thing you would even write a story *about*, let alone pull it together into a compelling and worthwhile narration.

I watched Andor and actually enjoyed it. It took a couple of episodes to get rolling but I thought it was good. Very different from normal Star Wars. No Jedi or Sith, and very few Stormtroopers. It is much more character driven.

*Seriously, I rewatched Highlander a couple months ago for the first time since the 80s and was shocked at how utterly crappy the special effects were and how terrible Christopher Lambert's performance was.
