Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Health & FITNEZZZ NEWZZZHulkamania GAINZZZ: Hulk Hogan says he's dropped 40 pounds after giving up booze 8 months ago. A lot of chronic conditions are due to diet. And not just on the macro level. But some people can digest, for example, gluten without incident, but other people will get cramps and diarrhea (or worse) from it. I know Jordan Peterson's daughter cured herself of several maladies -- I think a serious autoimmune disorder -- from pursing an "eliminationist" diet in which she cut out everything but meat. Some of the things she cut out turned out to have been causing her problems. I don't know if she ever identified what those were.
Speaking of beer: Alcohol doesn't make people seem more attractive and "beer goggles" are a myth, says deeply flawed study conducted by virgin nerds who never got their willies wet. Many a person has blamed "beer goggles" following a regrettable one-night stand, but a new study suggests that there's no such thing. Rather, alcohol acts more like "liquid courage," according to findings published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs -- you become more likely to approach people you already find attractive, rather than alcohol making others appear more attractive. "People who drink alcohol may benefit by recognizing that valued social motivations and intentions change when drinking in ways that may be appealing in the short term but possibly harmful in the long term," lead researcher Molly Bowdring, of the Stanford Prevention Research Center, said in a journal news release. Conventional wisdom has long held that intoxication makes other people seem better looking, but the phenomenon hasn't been systematically studied, researchers said. The "study" is weak. They asked subjects to rate people's looks, when the subjects were both sober and inebriated. This is... this far removed from a genuine Beer Goggles Scenario. They attempted to make the looking-at-pictures game more "realistic" by telling the subjects they could, maybe, meet and date the people they were rating. This is stupid. I don't even know why I have to explain this. Beer Goggles is a phenomenon regarding people you're looking to pick up and go to bed with within the next couple of hours. It's not about looking at pictures and saying "Gee I'd maybe like to meet her one day." Beer Goggles don't do Hypotheticals and Contingent Possible Future Dating Scenarios. It's a very pragmatic, real-world-results oriented thing. ... The researchers did not find evidence of beer goggles. Intoxication played no role in how attractive participants found other people.I think this study was conducted by people trying to convince themselves that they weren't just the 2-at-10, 10-at-2 consolation prize. You know what they should study? Ace of Spades Commenter Section Goggles. Guys walk into these comments and start proclaiming they'd bang virtually anything. Dudes, save that kind of talk for 11:50 pm. Game faces, dudes. Regular readers and commenters on the Ace of Spades website have a lower risk of dementia, a new study says. The study speaks vaguely of "use of the internet" but I know they mean "reading AoSHQ." You're welcome. On the other hand: Social media is one of the worst things that ever happened to our society, Legal Insurrection says. But then again, scientists warn that reading Legal Insurrection actually increases your risk of dementia. So consider the source! Scientists say they've discovered another "breakthrough" in fighting one form of childhood cancer.

That beer goggle study is bs.
I was a cocktail waitress and as the night wore on and the local good-looking Paolo types would get very desperate if they hadn't closed the deal for the night. the chicks they'd hit on got less attractive as the night wore on. When we'd turn on the lights it was always funny watching them hit on whoever was left. They called them floorboarders. When the dude would drive the chick home the next am, if he sees his friends, you throw something on the floorboard and ask her to pick it up, look under the seat, really get down there and look. Can't have your buddies see what/who you did the previous evening. Posted by: CaliGirl at September 08, 2023 05:44 PM (Br8mK) 24

Me and the wife are probably going to adopt a stray cat this weekend that has made our yard his home (the final decision will come down to a vet visit to see if he's got any serious problems we should know about). We are a little nervous because we're bringing him into a house with two females that have lived in opulent kitty luxury with us for nine years, and who do NOT like other cats.
We plan to introduce them gradually, in hopes that it will make things easier. We are hoping the adjustment period will be a brief one, but who knows. We've heard different things from different people - some said it only took their cats a few weeks to adjust to a newcomer, but one told us it took several months. Still another said it took only a few days in their case. Any insight/advice would be appreciated! Posted by: Ex-liberal at September 08, 2023 05:54 PM (XdH1u) 49

I'd also rub an old towel or t-shirt on the new cat and put it in your house so the cats get used to the scent and get the scent of your current cats on a towel and put it in the other cat's bedding. I'm not sure if you should mix the scent or if separate towels is necessary. First introduction is under the door. Then switch rooms. Put new kitty in house and put other cats in new kitty's space. Do this before meeting each other face to face. Have a safe spot for new kitty to retreat to where the other cats can't bully her. The current cats need their own safe space away from new kitty also. Use toys to distract cats. Da bird is a great toy and cat's love it. Posted by: CaliGirl at September 08, 2023 06:05 PM (Br8mK) 72

Midwest band guy: "Yeah, man, it's been rough but I think 2023 might be the year that we can start doing a few shows again. I mean, I have to wonder... it's an old thing I used to carry around, and it just sort of came up when my stepson was messing around in one of my boxes. I saw it, and said "oh, cool - hand me that," and as soon as I pocketed the thing, my luck changed, big time. Within minutes. I have to wonder if it's enchanted. But then, I'm a superstitious person.

Scientists have successfully induced rhabdomyosarcoma cells to transform into normal, healthy muscle cells.
There was not one over-all theme to all the Covid madness. It was, like everything else now, several groups pursuing different agendas. One agenda, I'll believe until I die, was that certain folks wanted to pursue a clinical study on a scale never before possible. And the results ? A relatively benign genetic therapy. And at the time, the only reason I could see doing such a thing was cancer. But that was tin-foil talk. Yet here we go. Genetic therapies are coming. And maybe that isn't all bad. But it was one Hell of a way to test them. Posted by: Nope at September 08, 2023 06:11 PM (SLmBK) 83

No. Luck is not the only factor in life. Some situations can't be controlled. But a lot of things people put down to luck turn out to be the result of hard work or the lack there of. People who constantly experience good luck aren't blessed by the god of luck. They put themselves in a situation where good things can happen. Or as John Milton said Luck is the residue of design. No changes? Then you don't have any food sensitivities. Big changes? Then you gots work to do. The way you re-introduce one thing at a time is the real key. Those that DO will experience Bad Luck as well as Good Luck on that same increased frequency. There is no 'deserve' implied. The notion of making one's luck is more about behaviour mitigation to increase your exposure to outcomes you would consider Good Luck. That first and third paragraph are opposed to each other. If some experience Luck more, then some much experience it less. You are fixated on the behaviors that increase the opportunity of "luck" - and look, I know why. You said it in paragraph number three. You're trying to hook luck into a "get what you deserve" deterministic outcome. Is Hunter Biden "lucky" ? He seems lucky to me. Why is he so "lucky". Conversely, what must one do to experience less "luck" ? Posted by: Nope at September 08, 2023 06:38 PM (SLmBK) 149

Last year I walked a lot in preparation for hiking the Camino Frances, but on the last day of the Camino I fell and landed on my right knee hard. I almost had knee surgery done for it, but chickened out at the last minute. This month the pool where I swim closed for annual maintenance for two weeks, and I decided I would just get my butt out and walk again. I am up to an hour now. Regular bedtimes are helping me get up early so I can walk before it gets too hot, and get away with skipping sunscreen. I just feel better for it.

Great post, Ace. Am 54 and hit the weight pile again 12 years ago and have never felt better. Three sets of 8 squats at 275 eliminates my bulging lower disks by keeping my spine straight through strengthening my glutes.
