No discussion of the debate or Trump interview in this thread. I'm putting this thread below the Debate/Interview thread because I know people don't like posting in anything but the top thread. So people who want to talk politics have their own thread -- and they keep it in that thread. Let this thread be for relaxing.

What your cat gets up to when you're trying to sleep.

I could do this if I just stretch my hammies a bit.

I could do this too, but right now I'm carb-loading.

Evil river otters.

113mph is close to the hardest ever hit dude. You don't get extra runs for a third deck or hitting it all the way out or for an inside the park homerun either. Or for a double after 3 errors you still get a double. And you get one run for stealing home too just like getting walked in.

First of all he'd depart the head before the rotor speed even approached flight idle at flat pitch. And when he left, he'd make contact with the blade as he fell through the rotor disc. The blade probably weighs about 70 lbs. I wouldn't want to be there when that happened.

I think, and it's been awhile, that one can get cut from Basic at any time. Part of the contract the applicant signs at enlistment. Marines are making their recruiting goals. Tonsils are a significant thing for adults. Cheaper to send him home than having him sit around for six months. Probably better for him too. On the upside he knows what to expect next time and could come out as honor grad.

195 TonyPete I can relate to being amped up about surgery. I had dental surgery yesterday and had to forego being knocked out because I didn't have anybody to drive me to and from the dentist office so they did it with nothing but local anesthetic. I had one or two passing moments where I wanted to leap out of the chair. The whole thing is stressful no matter how well you manage to stay mostly in a state of serenity.

For a hitter first thing I check is total bases each year for his career. Then doubles. But that's just because those are the players I like.

217 Come on dude. Deflecting a ball is not same same as squaring it up and driving it.

The ball bounced off the left field pole into damn near center field.

It's just a cool thing. Like how fast a car goes in the 1/4 mile.
Posted by: Thesokorus at August 23, 2023 07:37 PM (kdsFl)

That's why speed coming off the bat is bad. Because that IS the speed off the bat. What you want is velocity off the bat, modified so that the components that make it go out of play foul don't count.

The other problem is that you don't know the baseline velocity. How hard is a ground ball single up the middle compared to that home run. How hard is a sky high popup? Texas league hits are probably slow, but how slow? Nobody tells you.

So after working outside twice for only 20 minutes at a time, I spent most of the day inside, doing some fun embroidery and planning next year's garden. It was nice.

Tomorrow will be hot again (of course, NWS, it IS August, it's supposed to be hot, it's not heatagedon!) I'm going to sew some more. [happy dance] But, will be checking on mama hen and her three chicks, and all the other chickens. Give them some ice in their water, and some nice juicy tomatoes.

220 Exit velocity is one of the metrics the quant guys use to evaluate players. It is thought to convey how often a hitter hits the ball squarely and what is the bat's acceleration thru the strike zone.
Posted by: Jamaica NYC at August 23, 2023 07:30 PM (Eeb9P)

The exit velocity only tells how squarely he hit THAT pitch. It might be the only one he hits this week, or month.

There existed guys like Dave Kingman who either hit a tater or struck out.

222 Posted by: Oldcat at August 23, 2023 08:28 PM (eoQWY)

Ah. Sorry. It is actually exit velocity. Measured just off the bat. They also track "launch angle". And time to the wall.

They track fielder's acceleration and path to the ball too.

And fielder's throwing velo.

228 It works out like a bell curve: more velocity predicts more hits, just not which high speed ball will be a hit. They added launch angle to account for that. But, on this particular pitch, it is still an unknown, like Bucky Fucking Dent.

Singles have a much greater opportunity to drive in a run but just getting on base creates the opportunity to convert that to runs. No get on base, no runs. Getting walked is under appreciated.

Posted by: Lost In Space at August 23, 2023 08:41 PM (+ap8X)

Maybe by most fans. But front offices are in love with walks. Too much so. I'm not opposed to walks. And lots of players should walk every time if they could (Moneyball because they sucked and bad things happened when they hit yhe ball). But the good players should be hitting the ball because good things happen when they hit it.

I kinda blame Joey Votto. All timer. Fantastic. He racked up the walks. But the dude avg I think 310 Total Bases a year as well!

I'll take Arenado and Pujols hitting into DPs left and right over a dude with an OBP based off walks.

But I dig to the extent a walk is not an out. And if you are a bad hitter you better not make an out every damn time.

I loved watching managers deal with pitchers in the batting lineup and to this day I believe the game lost something when the DH came along. With that said in the modern game it makes sense from letting pitchers simply be pitchers and it creates offensive.
