Walmart, Home Depot Sound the Alarm: State-Tolerated Mass-Looting Is Getting Worse and Worse

Via John Sexton.

I'm surprised Woke Target would admit that people who take their goods through diverse ways of acquisition such as theft are a problem at all.

But the problem is so big now that even the wokest of the woke corporations has to begin objecting to blue jurisdictions legalizing crime.

Inventory shrinkage -- the loss of items to retail theft, organized crime, damage, vendor fraud, and other factors -- is still a major headache for US retailers. At least, that was a common thread heard on recent earnings calls from Home Depot (HD), Target (TGT), Walmart (WMT), and other large retailers last week.

On Wednesday, Target CEO Brian Cornell said the retailer is up against "an unacceptable amount of retail theft and organized retail crime." Last November, Target CFO Michael Fiddelke said the disappearance of merchandise caused a $400 million hit to the retailer's gross profit margin for the year.

"Shrink in the second quarter remained consistent with our expectations but well above the sustainable level where we expect to operate over time," Cornell said in the company's Q2 earnings call.

Walmart US CEO John Furner echoed that sentiment, saying: "Shrink has increased a bit this year. It increased last year. It's uneven across the country."

Retail theft weighed profit margins too. Just ask Home Depot.

"In the second quarter, our gross margin was 33%, a decrease of 8 basis points from the second quarter last year, primarily driven by pressure from shrink," Home Depot CFO Richard McPhail said on the earnings call. "Shrink has been a consistent pressure over the last several quarters and even the last few years. It's something we're tackling every day."

According to the National Retail Federation's (NRF) National Retail Security Survey, retail shrink was a nearly $100 billion problem for the industry as of 2021, the last year data was collected. That cost more than doubled from $45.2 billion in 2015.

"I can tell you that never before have I seen what I'm seeing today," David Johnston, NRF vice president of asset protection and retail operations, told Yahoo Finance. "The retailers are not crying wolf. They are highlighting a major issue out there."

It's not just shoplifting -- organized retail crime and employee theft have become growing concerns, according to the NRF.

Violence is a bigger issue too: According to Cornell, Target stores saw a 120% increase in theft incidents involving violence or threats of violence in the first five months of 2023.

It's true that these woke corporations have other reasons for their woes. Target is facing a boycott, for example.

Dick's Sporting Goods alienated half the country with its gun-grabber-friendly policies. But it too is whining that their beloved Democrats are feeding them to the criminal wolves.

The New York Post:

Dick's Sporting Goods on Tuesday blamed "organized retail crime" for sinking its quarterly profits by nearly 25% as the company slashed its full-year earnings outlook.

The popular retail chain reported a 23% drop in profits in the second quarter across its more than 700 stores nationwide -- despite sales rising 3.6%.

Dick's attributed the losses to "organized retail crime and our ability to effectively manage inventory shrink," an industry term used to describe stolen or lost merchandise.

...

Dick's share price plunged more than 20% after Tuesday’s opening bell.

Here's some of Dick's post-George-Floyd Summer-of-Love BLM-Batsignalling in February 2021:

I guess the wolves don't really care if you support their agenda or not.

Organized crime isn't all that interested in social media virtue signaling? They are instead interested in crime and scaring off those who would stop them?

Weird.

Earnings calls are notorious for blaming anything and everything (other than management) for disappointing performance. ‘Organized retail theft’ is a very convenient scapegoat. Are they providing detailed breakdowns of exactly how much is lost to theft with specific backup? I doubt it. Yes, retail theft is a problem. But I think it’s been overhyped as a convenient scapegoat.

Because of the way the laws are written.

Which means that every one of us gets stuck with highly inflated prices for the care we actually need.

I think Our Betters/Democrats are very aware that the cost of theft will just be passed on to us Middle and Working Class normies.

Which goes perfectly with their plans to inflate us into poverty.

- Tanks in the streets of the capitol city, which is on fire
- Massive civilian unrest and rioting
- Politicians running for their lives, many not making it
- A mustachioed strongman with a cool beret and a sidearm

Sadly, we have none of those. Sadly, we're not a banana republic. But, perhaps there's hope.

No offense, but you likely simply haven't heard of the incidents. There are no armed guards or locked products on the shelves near me, but I have LEO friends who tell me there are stores within ten miles of my house that are hit for thousands of dollars in thefts daily.

I live in a pretty classy upper middle class to lower upper class neighborhood and several shops near me don't accept paper money any more due to very frequent robbery.

Theft rings are mobile. If they don't have a car, they steal one. Then they go to the nice neighborhoods because people are not on guard there.

The mayor and chief of police of Whitehall

Whitehall, by the way, is probably a majority-minority suburb of Columbus. It is just east of Bexley, which is another suburb that probably holds some of the wealthiest people in the Greater Columbus area.
In the 1980's, Whitehall was a pretty nice place to live. My late uncle lived there before he died. It started going downhill in the 1990's and into the 2000's. Now, in the last ten years, it is visibly getting better again. A lot of hard work by people, and new developments, etc., and it is now becoming a nicer place to be.
They are not about to let it slide into being a mess.

Barring a state/local law that hasn't been challenged, it's illegal to forbid cash. No, I'm not suggesting everyone here create a situation at their local stores to prove a point. 283 I learned a lot about retail theft being in a grand jury. One thing, just letting the shop lifters go doesn't mean there will not be violence. Customers will inadvertently get in the way and the thief will not hesitate to beat them to get out of the store. The same has happened when a store clerk asked if they needed help thinking they were paying customers. He got his ass beat real good. Large scale shop lifting breeds violence.

I wonder if the crims are stupid enough to bring their mobile phones with them.

The ability to use simple tracking technology to identify the flash mobs and follow them to their criminal lair is pretty much old tech now.

If the local governments don't want to do it, I'm wondering if there is a cartel based industry willing to do black recovery and mitigation services for some of these retailers.

Especially retailers that can launder the payments to the cartels through their international locations.

299 Retail is going to have to move to a kiosk-type setup. Pictures/lists of products on a wall and customers fill out an order either on a checklist or digital app. Next, customer pays up front, and the then robots in the back warehouse scoop up the order and roll it out to the customer.

Retail personnel will be barebones. Payment will precede orders.

Crime will move out of store and into parking lot, for better or for worse. Then drive through kiosks will enter the building. And crime will move to street carjackings.

And then vigilante justice will become the norm because government/civil society will have failed utterly (and maybe by design).

More votes then Obama though.

322 Barring a state/local law that hasn't been challenged, it's illegal to forbid cash.

That’s a very common misconception. Legal tender cannot be refused to pay off debts. Like say, Taxes, or a power bill.

Any store or restaurant or hardware store, is free to set the terms of acceptable payment. How could it be otherwise? They can refuse to take cash. Or, they could demand cash only, and refuse cash or credit.

The difference being, you haven’t bought anything yet - thus, there is no “debt”.

What hasn’t been tested, there is a school of thought that posits refusal to accept cash for payment of debt extinguishes that debt. “You owe me $1000”

“OK, here”

“We don’t take cash”

“Great! Sign here on the dotted line…”

So called "Deep Cleanings" are often horseshit glorified normal cleanings used to fleece you and your pocket.

And they preyed on my guilt over not having been to a dentist in more than 3 years. Oh well, lesson learned.
I'll not be going back there. Thanks for the expert opinion on it.
Posted by: BurtTC at August 22, 2023 05:49 PM (P7aLi)

Here's another expert opinion.
If what your dentist actually did was a full periocharting and you had deep pockets and sub gingival calculus and then did a root plane and scale, more than likely you got your money's worth.

A "deep cleaning' is often used as a euphemism for an RPSC but not by me. you also probably needed to be numbed up for an RPSC cuz they can hurt like a bitch.

If you're a smoker and/or non-flosser chances are good that you may have had gum disease.

If your dentist isn't doing regular periocharting, then talks about "Deep cleaning", then yeah the odds go up on it being a scam. Mostly, because if he/she isn't doing regular periocharting, you're not getting proper dental care IMHO

As to organized crime retail theft- yep. If you have a local black market-and if you arr in a large city you do, and a medium city you probably do, then they fence item super cheap and then sell them cheap to buying cx who don't want to steal the items themselves, but want cheaper than store prices.

There are also COTS AI algorithms for those cameras out there to constantly scan and alert when certain criminal behavior is about to take place.

This is preventable. The doors mysteriously lock and customers can only leave when the algorithms detect organized crime imminent.

We thought it would be easy doing Christmas shopping like that one year. The warehouse left out out a lot of our order and it took forever to get corrected.

337 This is coordinated between law enforcement agencies in the blue areas. I wonder how much evidence of this coordination could be uncovered. It would be nice if the DOJ would investigate, but they are part of it. So that leaves the media and the Republicans. So I guess we won't find out.

CNN Senior Legal Analyst Elie Honig blasted the DOJ for their 'inexplicable' conduct with Hunter Biden.

"I genuinely am perplexed by what DOJ's doing here.
It's really inexplicable to me. First, we had basically five years of behind-the-scenes investigation with no transparency, no action, and some questions being asked, what's taken so long? And then they go all the way to appointing a special counsel, the same guy who's been presiding over the case for five-plus years already. I think they've made a real mess for themselves and now they're going to have to deal with the consequences of it."

365 Yes - typo - “No Checks. No Credit”

Businesses can refuse to accept cash is the point here. It’s legal tender in the sense it cannot be refused in payment of a debt. Your county courthouse must accept cash for your property tax payment. They don’t like it, because cash presents problems.

A business or restaurant or chain store, none of them are obligated to take cash, because you haven’t bought anything yet - there is no debt.

Do you see the difference? You could say “Silver dimes only” or “Wampum only” whatever you want.

Payment of taxes is one of the things that makes fiat currency in demand, and thus have a certain value. Even in my company scrip store, sooner or later I have to convert it into coin of the realm. That’s what makes it work, albeit temporarily.

No funny money has ever lasted more than 100 years or so. On that score the USD is a record.
