Saturday Evening Movie Post [moviegique]: Jules

I have lamented, particularly since the lockdowns ended, that while there have been some very good movies, the quality films that I could generally recommend have been very few and far between.

Bitching. I've been bitching about it.

Because I don't see how movie theaters survive with a menu of "hyper-expensive rehash of thing people used to like" and "weirdo art movie that moviegique (and pretty much only moviegique) likes". Success could come in the form of many more lower budget films that are accessible to a wide variety of people.

But only if they start offering them before people simply rule out going to the movies as an option, which many already have.

Which brings us to Jules: On the plus side, it's a movie I'd recommend to "general audiences". It's not for the hammer-my-body-with-soundwaves crowd, to be sure, but if you like movies about people, it's a likable one.

1.jpgI just assume Ben Kingsley is wearing as much makeup as Jade Quon here. I don't actually know what he looks like after playing Gandhi, The Mandarin, General Woundwort and Bagheera.

Jules is part of the "old guy with non-human friend" genre, which includes 2012's Robot and Frank and last year's Brian and Charles (which I also recommend), where a neglected senior citizen finds his life enriched by a robot or, in this case, an alien.

Ben Kingsley plays Milton, a 78-year-old man who's just starting to show serious signs of dementia. His daughter Denise (Zoe Winters, who's mostly a stage actress but apparently figures big in something called "Succession") struggles between trying to take care of him/trying to get him to recognize he needs help, and just ignoring him 'cause he's kind of an old coot.

Milton goes every week to the town council meetings where he suggests a crosswalk, and that they change the town slogan from "A nice place to call home"—because it could sound like you mean it's a nice place to call home from (foreshadowing!)—to "A nice place to refer to as 'home'."

When the alien ship crashes in his yard, of course, no one believes him.

2.jpgMilton is unhappy with the loss of his azaleas.

The contents of the ship are one small, blue, tender-eyed alien. The great character actress Harriet Sanson Harris plays Sandy, the chipper senior citizen who's set her cap for Milton, and who insists the alien be named "Jules". (Milton's attitude is that the alien's right there, and "he" and "him" are just fine as names.)

Jane Curtin is the too-good-for-this-small-town Joyce, who stumbles across Jules while spying on Milton and Sandy, figuring that they're up to...some kind of canoodling or something.

Anyway, the three of them get together to try to help Jules get back to his home planet. He doesn't talk, but he's very empathetic seeming, so at various points, the three of them pour out their hearts and souls to him.

What's nice about this genre is it tends to stay away from the mawkish. Like, there's nothing at Cocoon levels of dramatic intensity. Milton wrestles with confronting his likely undignified end and his checkered past as a father. Sandy has to deal with the crushing disappointment of her daughter (details elided). Joyce kind of just wants credit living her crazy life "in the big city" and getting out of it in time.

It's sweet and funny and human, and poses the question: Do you stick out life to the bitter end, or do you...I don't know, take off in an alien spaceship? There's probably a way to work it out as an allegory but it's fine if you don't.

3.jpg"A great place to refer to as home."

The acting is terrific, of course. The music on point. The writing, directing and editing are all sharp, down-to-business, not a lot of frills, here's our story, and the whole thing comes in at under 90 minutes.

It's probably not gonna tear up the box office. But there are parts which, if you have older parents (or you are an older parent) that are howlingly funny, such as Milton trying to explain the TV remotes to Jules, or otherwise wrestling with technology. Sandy's backstory is full of pathos, cringe and straight-up comedy.

A full version of "Freebird" is sung.

It's funny. It has incompetent cops and feds which feel very realistic. Heh. It just all works. Is it gonna blow you away? No, probably not, just like it's probably not going to burn up the box office. But it's nice. And human. And alien.

And under 90 minutes! A mini-miracle. Moviegique says: Check 'er out.

4.jpg Bring snacks.

9 "Killer Joe" (2011) Nolte recommended this upon the recent death of Friedken. Lurid story is kind of interesting, but some scenes are truly disgusting. I say watch infinitely superior "The French Connection" (1971) instead.

"True Romance" (1993) Watched it only because of the cast. It's a stew of overfamiliar Tarantino motifs, not really worth the viewing time.

"Four Good Days" (2021) Glenn Frozenface Close and Mila Methmouth wallow in murky mother-daughter miasma in this chick-flicky addiction drama.

13 I saw "Showgirls" streaming on Criterion this week.

Hadn't seen it for decades.

Wholley Kau what an awful movie!

On the upside it had lots o' larrupin' tittays. And the once super delicious Gina Gershon all nekkid. And Elizabeth Barkley was pretty and nekkid but couldn't act at all. Or rather could act like a psycho.

Terrible script, terrible acting, terrible directing. nice cinematography, nice sets, nice tits.

So, i suppose it was a realistic portrait of Las Vegas.

Therefore A+++ rating - a must see!

18 Regarding "Oppenheimer"-

We saw it yesterday and it seems a lot of people are missing the story or point of the movie with their flogging of hobby horses.

The movie begins with a quote about Prometheus being punished for giving the gift of fire to mankind. Then in the movie - three times - he is told directly by his two wives and Einstein that he cannot expect to other people to forgive/forget his sins.

The story is more or less about how the Golden Boy of Genius is brought down by not only the "small" people and their petty concerns around him but his own issues and concerns and even his success in bringing "fire" to mankind.

Oppenheimer is understandably horrified by what his "fire" has wrought. If only his accomplishment could've stayed in the world of his beautiful beautiful mind, instead of venturing out into the world of petty men and women as was always intended even by himself. They do not understand his "fire" and hate him for it.

Regarding the Communists in "Oppenheimer"-
Yes, they're initially portrayed as bright, young things only interested in bettering the world.

19 It's no Mac and Me.

Posted by: G'rump928(c) at August 19, 2023 07:58 PM (Qn59F)

20 (con't)

However,(and I freely admit this may be my hobby horse), they become increasingly portrayed as creepy servants of the Soviet Union in their insistence that the secrets of the Bomb be given freely to the Communists in so that they can build their own bomb

to use as a bulwark against the US in a balance of power cuz otherwise the Soviets will build their own bomb to use against us in a balance of power or more likely war.

As you can see this is a very stupid kind of circular logic, And oppenheimer himself becomes creepier and less sane(?) as he adopts it.

His wife at his "hearing" where they strip Oppy of his security clearance, even sort of speaks to this when she says that yes, she joined the Communist Party but came to realize it was all a fake front for worldwide Soviet totalitarianism.(though not in those exact words). and wanted nothing to do with it.

So, in the end Oppenheimer is punished, even by himself" for his gift of "fire".

76 I watched Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid recently on TCM. I was bowled over by the cast: Jack Elam, Slim Pickens, Katie Jurado, RG Armstrong, Dub Taylor, Jason Robards, Luke Askew. I could go on. Oddly, I've always thought that Kris Kristopherson was miscast. But it's my favorite James Coburn film. Other than his Schlitz Light commercials.

Coen brothers don't make bad films. Some are better than others. Not sure what they've done since "Hail Caesar," but that's a fantastic film.

Seems they tend to make movies that are full of narrative, but don't really have to mean much of anything. You expect them to, and in the end, they really don't. Which is fine by me.

138 Speaking of literature, I came across this story of Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald.

“Zelda is crazy,” he informed Fitzgerald one afternoon, after Fitzgerald allegedly complained that Zelda deemed him insufficiently endowed. Hemingway inspected Fitzgerald’s wares in the bathroom of Michaud’s, a Saint-Germain restaurant where James Joyce regularly dined with his family. “There’s nothing wrong with you,” he concluded. “Zelda just wants to destroy you.” Nor did he keep his opinions to himself. Fitzgerald “should have swapped Zelda when she was at her craziest but still saleable back 5 or 6 years ago before she was diagnosed as nutty,” he wrote to Perkins later.

They redeemed themselves with No Country for Old Men, which if it's ending was simply trimmed to when Chigur exits the house and wipes his boot and faded to black, may have entered the pantheon of the greatest films of all time.

sure because trading up wrt your wife really worked for "Papa", it worked so splendidly he offed himself at age 60.

also...what straight man invites himself to examine another man's junk? And what qualified Hemingway to deliver the assessment that Fitzgerald was "OK""? Hadn't Papa ever heard of the Irish Curse?

in any case, a true assessment can only be made when the man is erect, so I don't know what this means, did Hemingway fluff Fitzgerald? I'm starting to believe the trope that all creative types are homo.

Holden and Kim Novak both looked way too old for their respective parts, Holden especially. But you know, he looked great shirtless and that was the theme of the movie, with a subtext of women being judged in either of two ways: she either has brains, or beauty.

Or was the subtext that a man is only valued for his beefcake quality or his wealth? In any case, beefcake ended up withe beauty which was hilarious from today's perspective, because Holden was a professional loser and "Madge" basically boarded the bus that was taking her to a lifetime of conjugal prison visits.

--------------

Like I felt after The Day After. It lasted like two days.

In school, when I got to the Cold War, I conceived of an idea to start class off: the scene from Dr. Strangelove when Slim Pickens jumps on the bomb…then go forward 19 years and show the bombing scene from The Day After.

Then I thought about it, and then realized that in order for me to do this, it would mean reliving one of the most, if not THE most, traumatic moments from third grade, and doing it five times in a day.

I shelved the idea. It was hard enough showing the Holocaust scenes from “War and Remembrance” five times in one day.

252 He was even in a cute RomCom called Up In The Air, that also starred Anna Kendrick.

Anna Kendrick is a lollypop on a stick. I would have her babies.

253 Glad others like "John Carter". After the critics (spits) slammed it and Disney (spits twice) seemed to go out of their way to scuttle it, I thought I might be the only fan.

She is a babe, she can also sing and dance.

So can Sam Rockwell.

We need more musicals.

257 For one of his “Who Dis?”, OM had this stunning pic of Anna Kendrick.

I think Disney could have partially redeemed themselves if they had just called it "John Carter of Mars." Those two words might have altered the perceptions of the audience that it would be a sci-fi action adventure movie.

"John Carter" might has well have been "John Wick" or "Jack Reacher." Totally different audience expectations.

259 "Kingsley starred in a film called Sexy Beast as a bad guy. It was one of the most hypnotizing performances as a heel I've ever seen."

Lord I love that movie. The whole cast is excellent not just Kingsley.

261 Clooney: You work for the railroad, old man?

Blind Seer: I work for no man.

Clooney: You got a name, do ya?

Blind Seer: I have no name.

Clooney: Well that right there may be the reason you gave difficulty finding gainful employment.

Disney was of the belief that putting Mars in the title would make it box office poison and cause it to fail.

263 Never cared for Breakfast at Tiffany's but I don't like stories about big city angst and isolation. The best thing about it was the song "Moon River".

I like some of Audrey Hepburn's acting but every time I see her on screen I want to yell: "Will you please just eat a sandwich or something."

265 Spouse and son went to see Oppenheimer. They enjoyed it I think he sounds like an incredibly arrogant person and rather cruel and I had no desire to see the film. I would like to see a film on Issac Newton who would probably be considered on the autism spectrum if he had lived today. As far as I can discern from what I've read , Newton was quite opinionated but not cruel and he believed in God and Christ. None of this nonsense about "Science is real" and therefore God is not.

Jules sounds fun.

266 Just watched Nefarious on Amazon Prime. Wow, great acting and plot! Don’t want to give anything way, but I highly recommend it. It conveyed the conservative/Biblical worldview better than any movie in memory, and without being the least bit cheesy or predictable.

I never imagined that it was honest to goodness yet my closest companion is earning 16,000 US dollars a month by working on the connection, that was truly astounding for me, she prescribed for me to attempt it simply. 273 39 31: speaking of... last night we re-watched "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" with Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, and to your point, Marisa Tomei. I'd forgotten but she's nearly naked in most of her scenes.

What a depressing but good movie.
