Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Welcome to Election Season! The late Tom Bethell used to point out in his American Spectator columns how denizens of Washington DC -- people we now regard as the shock troops of the administrative state -- regarded elections as a nuisance, because the results could interfere with their plans to extend expert control over everyone and everything, especially if those icky Republicans won (though usually not for long). Well, the New York Times has sort of come around the this position . . . They thought better of this headline, apparently because it was too candid about the progressive view that the people--the ones who live south of Richmond anyway--are unfit actually to govern themselves. Within a few hours the Times changed it as follows: The gist of the article is that the wrong people run and are elected to office. The proposed remedy? Choose our government officials by lottery! Gee -- why didn't some ancient writer not think of that? Like, maybe Aristotle, in The Politics, Book IV, 1294be.Does that mean we would be able to replace members of the Deep State by lottery periodically, too? On the other hand, it is nice to see the Times start to come around to William F. Buckley Jrs point view that he'd rather be governed by the first 2000 names in the Boston telephone directory than the faculty of Harvard. . .Hayward goes on to make a marvelous corollary point about education. Coincidentally, a "friend of a friend" on social media (of a progressive persuasion) saw that I had posted the first NYT graphic. He paraphrased WFB to leave out the part about the Harvard faculty and suggest that the quote was about members of Congress. So I happen to have what WFB wrote about this point (though this was not the first time he had made the point about the Boston phone book and the Harvard faculty): I am obliged to confess that I should sooner live in a society governed by the first two thousand names in the Boston telephone directory than in a society governed by the two thousand faculty members of Harvard University. Not, heaven knows, because I hold lightly the brainpower or knowledge or generosity or even the affability of the Harvard faculty: but because I greatly fear intellectual arrogance, and that is a distinguishing characteristic of the university which refuses to accept any common premise. He wrote this in 1963 in Rumbles Left and Right: A Book about Troublesome People and Ideas. I'm not sure what Buckley meant by "any common premise", but I'm afraid that since 1963, the Harvard Faculty has become quite capable of accepting some really stupid ideas in common with each other. America's voting problem is primarily a local one. When compared with that of peer nations, our general-election turnout is actually middle-of-the-pack. And although more voting at the federal level is desirable, some political-science research casts doubt on whether the results of national elections would significantly change if everybody showed up. Not so in local elections, where the electorate is remarkably unrepresentative. The timing of the graphic to coincide with the first GOP debate, along with the one from the NYT suggesting that elections are "bad for democracy", is sort of disconcerting. And I'm not so sure that the intense focus on presidential politics leaves much room for the study of local politics even if local elections are scheduled along with federal elections. What do you think about timing of local elections? I, and others here, have suggested that maybe we need to focus more of our attention locally. How do we do that? Of course, The Atlantic doesn't want too many conservatives and Senior Citizens showing up to vote on local issues. I strongly suggest that those wishing to make sense of current events ignore the headlines and delve into studies of mythology, ancient religion, psychoanalysis, and classic lit. We have left the mundane sphere of "politics" and are in a vaster, deeper, more symbolic domain. He got some interesting responses. Check out others at the link. Here are a few: The modern technocratic managerial mindset we've cultivated for ourselves seems to ignore every human tendency that can't be turned into data. Now all those pesky unmeasurables of heart, spirit, & mind are gathering strength & morphing into new & monstrous forms in the shadows. Sir, one alternative might be to systematically study what causes social/political collapses. Peter Turchin's book, End Times, summarizes the findings based on hard data going back centuries. I'd like to respectfully suggest adding watching The Three Stooges to you list. Perhaps we had better start fighting fire with fire You just knew somebody would do this: Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I think we do vote too much. We have primaries then general every two years. Then in off years we have municipal elections. And sometimes primaries for those municipal elections. And on top of that we have random ballot measures in March or July or sometimes just out of the blue on a random date. And sprinkle all that with special elections if someone retired or dies in office. There is always a yard sign for some election going on. At least around me.
It gets exhausting and it’s part of why the voting rate outside of presidential elections is abysmally low. I’m not saying we need fewer elections, just more consolidation of elections. Fewer election days, same number of things we vote on. Posted by: Montec at August 26, 2023 11:22 AM (XsD7N) 11

I've been thinking about the DeSantis phenomenon, and I realize unlike some people around here, I'd already given up on any of these people before any of this, so I think I'm more objective here.
He's not a bad guy, obviously. But whatever compelled him to join the fray, he quickly learned he wasn't allowed to say some things, while he was required to say other things, and so, whoever this guy is, what we're seeing now isn't him. It's whoever is backing him. And I believe the lackluster effort he's put forth is at least in part due to him realizing, after he got in, that he wasn't going to be able to be who he is. So he's been half-assing it, somewhat to his credit. Posted by: BurtTC at August 26, 2023 11:25 AM (AMJwl) 18

Let's discuss primaries with an insane number of candidates. WA state had 26 candidates for governor and top two vote getters move on, regardless of party. (We did get a repub, Culp, against Inslee). These are vanity runs and unlikely to do anything but have voters use name recognition for their choice.

Pronouncing DeSantis’s Carter dead is a bit premature. He will still be governor of FL for 2.5 years and then can run again 2024. Biden ran twice (or was it 3 times?) times for the DNC before winning. Reagan ran and failed in 1976. Hillary lost in 2008 and won in 2016.
It’s not exactly unprecedented to run, lose, run again and win a 2nd time. Posted by: Montec at August 26, 2023 11:29 AM (XsD7N) 25

From open borders to EVs to sexual deviancy (even with children) to…. You name it. They seem to work against the wishes of the vast majority…. I for who knows how long they’ve been rigging elections to give the illusion that the nonsense is popular. one downside of too many elections that I've observed is that when there's a local election for say, school board members or some bond proposal, only a handful of people ever show up to vote - meaning whoever can get some level of organized support for their idea or pet project wins that vote easily. Sometimes that's good, sometimes it isn't.

42 one downside of too many elections that I've observed is that when there's a local election for say, school board members or some bond proposal, only a handful of people ever show up to vote - meaning whoever can get some level of organized support for their idea or pet project wins that vote easily. Sometimes that's good, sometimes it isn't.
Posted by: Tom Servo __________ School board elections are particularly troublesome. Normal people with who aren't "professional educators" or "learning facilitators" [spit], are at a disadvantage in knowing which bums to kick out. In the past, I've used a ranking system of degrees-of-hell-no to vote in school board or city council elections. Anyone employed in government was an automatic hell no, followed by anyone who is running to "support our teachers" (99% hell no), followed by anyone who uses the term "stakeholders" unironically (98% hell no), followed by anyone who has a picture of an apple on their yard signs (97% hell no). Lots and lots of detail in the article. Allegedly, the United States told the Ukes not to do it, and Zelensky was kept out of the loop, so he could maintain deniability. For some reason, Berlin doesn't seem very inclined to have the ongoing investigations progress rapidly to a conclusion. I think we don’t do enough to focus on local government. One clue as to this is the local mouthpieces. Amarillo’s local fishwrap I call the Community Calendar. Top headlines usually are such important topics as: a local restaurant opening, high school graduations, a civic organization holding a fundraiser, and so on. It is NEVER about piffling things like how Amarillo is spending taxpayer money or the pros and cons of bond issues. The local affiliates gloss over some local stories before simply repackaging the National network news. From these examples I can see how people think we have a unitary government.
Never mind the bad politicians in DC began as dirtbags on a school board someplace, and local and state government can and does effect things more than the federal level. Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at August 26, 2023 12:02 PM (f0XAF) 104

The three-county Portland Metro area voted down a $5 billion transportation bond. It's very rarely that you find people with positive views of HOAs. It is mostly horror stories of fees and fines, combined with busybodies, if not out-right embezzlers. Of how their freedom to do what they want with their land and their property is curtailed by the HOA's. The funny thing is, these same brain-damaged children-in-adult-bodies will be the first to vote for big government. The HOAs are just government at a tiny, yet very local level. Literally at your front door. And you have the right to push for votes and to kick the bums out. Try doing that with the federal bureaucracy, with its unelected horde of agents pushing rule and regulation after rule and regulation. Wonder how many people could cross the logical chasm that voting for big-government politicians (mostly D's, but R's as well) is the same as your local HOA telling you each and every thing you must or must not do, along with the waste and the secrecy they try to hide behind. This is especially true if one's party relies on low voter turnout to falsify results. Elections are invalid on the face of them when vote tally exceeds voter registration numbers. But for some reason those who certify elections do not make that simple check. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at August 26, 2023 12:18 PM (ga8qR) 147

It's very rarely that you find people with positive views of HOAs. It is mostly horror stories of fees and fines, combined with busybodies, if not out-right embezzlers. Of how their freedom to do what they want with their land and their property is curtailed by the HOA's.
_____ HOA's are a little taste of fascism. Left one years ago, will go out of my way to never go back. It's just a great example of why I hate Big Government. You give people more power and authority, and they will abuse it. The times I had hoped the HOA would actually "save the day" they would throw their hands up and say they are powerless. One of the big prog pushes that most people are not aware of (yet) is to hand large chunks of government authority to unelected "expert" panels, taking decision-making for those topics out of the hands of the legislature or executive. The panels would be supplemented by citizens selected by lottery to slap a veneer of "democracy" on them, although there is some argument on whether specific stereotypical prog victim groups would have quotas which themselves are filled by lottery. One of the biggest problems with government is that they have to continuously solve "problems". Take health care for instance; I had better access and understanding of healthcare services back in 1990. Since that time one political party has made healthcare a voting issue. Today, I pay more than ever and I don't even know what I am allowed to go to the doctor for. Congress forced a 13,000 page law onto us in a week that is basically corporate welfare for the medical industry.

Politics, at least the "retail" version isn't for the everyman. It's too expensive to get involved in anything other than (to me) meaningless town councils, focus groups and the like with no power and typically with no backchannel to the actual local government. The HOA's around the country have more bite.
Even here in our rural slice of Kentucky I see the same faces for local, county and some city positions that can be construed as "government positions of authority." Anyone running in opposition is usually way, way out of touch with how the "system" works. It's a systemic problem that affects our entire political institution. It cannot be fixed with "votes" or "elections." Those are corrupted as well. Posted by: Martini Farmer at August 26, 2023 12:24 PM (Q4IgG) 171

Anyways, the problem isn't this or term limits or whatever, the problem is our third branch has lawyers set up as the gatekeepers. We need a vigorous defense of plain-language laws, in a quantity that doesn't weasel around the need to effectively publish them (hat tip to Hammurabi here), and an iron-clad concept of citizens having standing to challenge them. It pains me to say something that's in sort of agreement with that shitstain Paul, but I don't believe in demons either. Humanity is perfectly capable of perpetrating the most horrible evils imaginable, without the help of the demonic horde. Karl Marx for example. Just a man, but almost singlehandedly responsible for bloodletting on a scale that would make the devil himself quake in terror. All because he was too lazy to get out and earn an honest living. Engels could have done the world a solid by cutting off Karl's meal ticket and forcing him to get a job as a chimney sweep. Democracy is mob rule, communism is about the same, theocracy (fanatic edition) is the same except you get to choose from three options. None of those options are very attractive. I choose the Constitutional form of government, so whatever it takes to cut the current rot away let's get at it. America, our patient, is dying.

Now, imagine if instead of spending 12 trillion dollars fighting perpetual war for the past 20 plus years, we'd spend at least SOME of that money modernizing the military, making it leaner (and meaner). We'd be better equipped to respond to threats around the globe.
Unlike now, when we no longer have any capability to enforce any international "interests" we may have. Posted by: BurtTC at August 26, 2023 12:28 PM (qT++m) We haven’t? That has been our obsession for YEARS. Now, I have my own views on this that I can’t get into here - just not enough time for the specifics - but consolidation of supply chains can go a long way. A good chunk of that $12T could be saved doing that alone. By the way, perhaps you missed out on the KC-46 replacing the KC-135s? Or the fact that we could have spent some money on fully upgrading to the F-22, but His Majesty The Shahinshah whined in 2009 that since we spend more money on defense than the rest of the world combined. Oh, and when something like 9/11/01 happens, call me crazy but my response isn’t curl up into a ball and 1) bawl 2) pout 3) whine. He's also an Othodox Jew, so I expect that he may believe in demons. He certainly believes in God, so I don't think it's a question of psychiatry automatically being a lesser medical specialization. I also asked him once why he hadn't retired. He said, "Because I need to pay off my students loans" which I thought was admirable of him.

Unless one thinks killing thousands and thousands and thousands of foreigners, and bringing home Americans in body bags, or broken beyond repair, is an accomplishment. I have no doubt there are many little beetles in many big weapons manufacturing R and D departments, coming up with ALL SORTS of new and spectacular ways to kill people. After all, they wouldn’t have attacked had we just sold them everything they wanted and not moved our fleet from San Diego to Pearl Harbor. (That both locations were American territory was lost on him.). As WWII wasn’t our fight, the ONLY thing we should have done, in his view, is made money off Germany and Japan. “it wasn’t our fight” he said.
Now, maybe that’s how you see things and your response to things like 9/11 is to simply pout and whine, but likewise I can’t see not responding to that. Would I have done things differently? Sure. News from the word of medicine. In the past month or so, the FDA has approved two different new vaccines for RSV. Arexvy (Glaxo-Smith-Klne) and Abrysvo (Pfizer).
Interestingly, Pfizer and GSK had entered into a joint venture a few years ago, and these vaccines emerged from that time frame. The joint venture has since been dissolved and they each are releasing their own version of the vax. Both vaccines use a Chinese hamster ovary cell line in culture, via recombinant DNA technology to produce a protein (different protein for each of the two vaccines, but same process) that is purified, lyophilized (freeze-dried) and packaged for distribution. These are NOT mRNA vaccines. Oddly enough, the measured dose of RSV protein for both vaccines is exactly the same- 120 mcg. (cont) Posted by: Muldoon at August 26, 2023 01:03 PM (991eG) 273

Maybe vote in school boards that educate our kids so businesses will have a labor pool that and add 2+2 instead of worrying about their pronouns and who they want to fuck and how that makes ALL the difference?
And finally, maybe elect a government that isn’t isolationist, takes the outside world seriously, and makes it known that if you look at a U.S. citizen wrong, you do so at your great personal risk? The concept of deterrence which we got away from in the 1990s saves a LOT of money. I’d argue if we did more deterrence in the 1990s and took things seriously we’d still have the WTC towers, 3000 people and a few trillion in change. Abrysvo OTOH was approved both for elderly individuals and pregnant women after one-year results of an onngoing phase 3 randomized, placebo controlled clinical trial in multiple countries. Neither of the two vaccines is approved for direct administration to the patient population most heavily affected by RSV, infants less than 2 years old, in particular ex-premature infants. The vaccine is instead given to expectant mothers at 32-36 weeks gestation, the mother's immune system produces antibodies and the antibodies cross the placental barrier into the fetal bloodstream. The baby does not produce antibodies. The maternal antibodies remain in the circulation for up to 6 months following birth, providing "passive immunity for the child for just that time period.
This presents a problem, since RSV is a seasonal virus that mostly occurs in Oct to Mar, and babies are born all year. Plus, the six month protection window will not always coincide with the highest risk season. I suspect it will be offered year round in spite of this shortcoming. It will be "discovered" that all the psychotherapeutic being washed down the gullet of people who really don't need them are harmful to the brain and endocrine systems. "Elections are bad for democracy."
Eventually, somebody will listen. Both sides, and it is both - you're just on the losing side right now so it feels different - want a Benevolent Monarch. The argument, politically, is all about the definition of Benevolent. The new twist, such as it is, is that now Democrats are Globalist while a minority of Republicans are flirting with Nationalism. That's it. Shit can all the ideology. All the weepy Peggy Noonan shit about a bygone era. Also all the good old days where the NeoCons would stand shoulder to shoulder with you to tax you to whip the Soviets. That's all gone. Shooting a dog is a civil matter not a criminal charge. It's a weird business between a property dispute and an acceptance of Dogs Gonna Dog. I mean, with anything even an airsoft. Common Law accepts we are gonna have dogs and they will act like dogs. So you can't just cap a nuisance dog. Neither can you cap a dog for barking. It's a weird civil area of law. Dog breed type also enters into play. You cannot shoot dead a dog for running at you and barking (unless you're a cop). That's typical dog behavior. It's a strange area.

Fair and free elections are a thing of the past. After the Republican Party worked with Democrats and their Leftist allies to steal the 2020 election, then proceeded to do nothing to stop it, fair and free elections were forever done.
Our two major parties are owned by sometimes competing but often similar corporations and billionaire financiers, who do what their masters command, all while trying to fool the actual voters. George Soros? Koch brothers, anyone? The Camber of Commerce and Zuckerberg? Communists China? Yep. ALL the aforementioned! We are doomed to fall. Another area of "what is the law" vs "what I will do". Lets say it's a pit bull, running at me barking ? That dog is screwed. What does the law say ? At that moment, I don't care. BTW, the sh*t is about to hit the fan - the utterly German establishment Der Spiegel published a lengthy article making a compelling case that the Nordstream pipelines were blown up by Ukrainian special forces.
Bombing the Nordstream pipelines was an act of war against Germany, of course. https://archive.ph/q2h7F Posted by: The ARC of History! at August 26, 2023 11:59 AM (2tUFv) Sorry, don't buy it. There was a US Fleet group operating in the area on 'exercises' just at the time of the planting and blowing up that would make it very dangerous for any other players. Ukr SF might be compatible with the leaks from various US players like Newland about how the pipes would fail, but not the preknowledge Biden had. Also, the British PM at the time sent a message to Blinken that it had gone off before the news was public. Any other group besides one sanctioned and organized by the US ran the risk of a real investigation and payback. Ukraine's terrorism is pretty much land based and directed at Russia, including pipelines overland. Posted by: Oldcat at August 26, 2023 04:26 PM (eoQWY) 361
