Russian (Times) Collusion [Moviegique]

One of my main gripes about the state of news is that corporate media still dominates the topics of conversation. Even (especially?) those who fight the old propaganda mills of the New York Times, the Washington Post, CNN, et al, end up spending all their time on the topics those organs are lying about at any given moment.

Since I don't usually do news here I thought it'd be fun to look at a different source of propaganda, RT.COM. (I think that's short for "Russia Today".) Not surprisingly the focus is somewhat different, though not as much as I would have liked. Here are the headlines on the main page:

I don't say that I agree with this take. (My own would be that the Cold War was orchestrated at Malta at the end of WWII, and without US support, the USSR would have collapsed shortly after it began.) But I found it at least refreshing to see a different spin on things.

MOVIE QUICKIES

I don't broadly recommend movies because people have different interests and movies themselves are increasingly niche. Last weekend, a little film called Jules came out, starring Ben Kingsley as an older man just starting to show signs of dementia, when an alien spaceship crashes in his backyard.

No one believes him, of course, but he enlists fellow oldsters Jane Curtin and Harriet Harris to help him figure out what the alien needs to get home. Reminiscent of Robot & Frank or last year's Brian and Charles, it's charming, short, tight, great acting of course, and worth checking out if it sounds like your kind of thing.

The Clinton Administration was the one that tried to both exploit and humiliate Russians and damn near started a war when Yugoslavia broke up and the Russians were helping the Serbs. As the journalist mentioned, the overwhelming fear was that the weapons of mass destruction in the Sov Union would be dispersed throughout the world and that is why we are still funding biolabs in Ukraine doing research on bioweapons thirty years after the Cold War ended, probably in some other places as well.

On the Czech border in 92 or 93, a few years after the Velvet Revolution, we spent 30 days camping out 5 feet from the border and watched as formerly Soviet troops were replaced by Czech regulars. It was cool, they did basically a change of command ceremony 100 yards from us. I can say the Czech guys were much better equipped, and friendlier, than the Russkies they replaced.

On the Czech border in 92 or 93, a few years after the Velvet Revolution, we spent 30 days camping out 5 feet from the border and watched as formerly Soviet troops were replaced by Czech regulars. It was cool, they did basically a change of command ceremony 100 yards from us. I can say the Czech guys were much better equipped, and friendlier, than the Russkies they replaced.

194 Diogenes, I think I've heard that story before, probably here. Did you or Pug, ever have need to go to Baumholder? It was a pretty big base that my tiny Strassburg Kaserne was 20 miles away from? (I mean tiny population wise. For the first 6 months I was there, it was only an HQ platoon occupying the entire base, which has existed since before WW1). Good times. I know I went to Augsburg a few times but I can't remember much about the place.

He had nothing but time on his hands as Germany and Euroland were becoming dependent on his nat gas, the anti oil position of Biden was raising oil prices, and he had consolidated power in Russia pretty much.
