The Morning Report — 8/14/23

Good morning, kids. The Maui wildfires remains the top story as the scale of the disaster in terms of human life and of course to a lesser extent property is horrific. In my post last week referring to the fact that many ultra wealthy, primarily well-known lefties being in the line of fire did not necessarily make me lose much sleep, a commenter pointed out that many ordinary folk also make their home on the island. No doubt they probably comprise the vast majority of the victims, and I truly do feel for them.

And in that vein, this particular angle to the story yet again illustrates both our vulnerability to nefarious actors (that has yet to be determined though in this case) and more importantly the incompetence of government in providing a certain level of protection that the citizenry are taxed to high heaven to provide, is kind of infuriating.

A spokesman for Hawaii’s emergency management agency says that none of the 80 warning sirens placed around the island were activated at any time during the wildfire that has caused massive damage and taken at least 93 lives. The historic city of Lahaina has been all but destroyed, as has much of the western part of the island.
Hawaii Gov. Josh Green says it isn’t known whether infrastructure damage prevented the sirens from going off. But the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency’s spokesman, Adam Weintraub, confirmed on Saturday that the sirens alone would not have been a sign to evacuate, but for residents to seek more information.
He said other alert systems were activated, including emergency alerts that were sent to cellphones and to radio and TV stations, but there were power outages in Lahaina on Tuesday, and many residents said they never got any warnings.
“The emergency sirens are tested once a month, but they weren’t sounded for some unknown reason to announce these fires,” Robin Ritchie, a long-time Lahaina resident said. “That makes me feel very angry because the lack of warning has definitely caused death.” Ritchie says that two of her friends were saved from the approaching fire only when the smoke alarms in their homes went off. . .
. . . There was a report from a company that monitors power grid activity that a “large fault” was detected on a power line 20 minutes before the wildfire started. It may very well have been a coincidence since residents were reporting power outages all throughout Tuesday. . .
. . . Considering that Maui had a top-of-the-line warning system, the state was ill-prepared for the disaster."

"Top-of-the-line." As in "TOP men." Faults and power outages minutes before the fires started? That definitely doesn't sound kosher, does it? Or if it wasn't the prelude to a mass act of terrorism perhaps it was some freak anomaly that happened almost at the same time by pure coincidence. Either way, the fact that something as basic as warning sirens not going off is completely inexcusable. Ultimately, we'll see who or what is to blame for this disaster turning into a human catastrophe. Of course, if it is shown that government's incompetence and/or lack of preparedness in, if not preventing at least mitigating the loss of life is at the heart of this, what real consequences will those officials and politicians charged with preventing this face? History teaches us that you don't have to be Jeanne Dixon to prognosticate the future.

They did that here in Harris County. The ballot took 2 pages to print and most places only ordered 1 page per voter. And it was per voter in the last election. So they gave your a provisional ballot that was dropped into a black box!

Assume that the story isn't a hoax. Assume that it's true and border control measures resulted in the death of a minor. Read this quote from that perspective.

It's absurd even if the event actually happened. Neither Abbott nor CBP caused the death of the minor. The minor's parents who dragged him along on their mission to commit a crime (or the cartel boys that are trafficking an enslaved person did it).

If this situation had instead been a case of a gang-banger taking his kid along on a holdup job and the kid got caught in the crossfire between the thug and the victim, the death of the child would not be the fault of the victim who was being held up. The death of the child would rightly fall on his father, who knowingly took him along to commit a crime and exposed him to those risks.

I hate the press.

Most of the public commentators suffer from a similar pathology. They all cannot (or will not) escape from the Postwar frame of reference. The Postwar Normalcy is the entire identity of most political commentators. Trust cannot be shattered, it can merely be "threatened" or "reduced" or "at risk." I used to live in fire country. I saw a lot of fires. Got evacuated once, was at the edge of the evacuation zone at least half a dozen times.

Whenever there was a major fire, a bunch of groups descended to help out. The Red Cross was always there and always very loud about it. They didn't do much. The Salvation Army was also always there, working their asses off and doing real good. When local people businesses were trying to coordinate their help - the supermarket providing a refrigerated truck to store supplies for firefighters and families, families in the area cooking meals for the firefighters and evacuees and needing a place to take and distribute them, helping with field medicine, etc. - it was the Salvation Army doing the quarterbacking and heavy lifting. Every time, without fail. The Red Cross had their own stuff and it was usually not at all that well deployed.

It's why I gave generously to the Salvation Army for a long time. I saw them in action, and appreciated it. I gave to them until they went woke.

In my experience, the Salvation Army and the churches were the best at providing immediate relief. The SalVo was better organized, the churches were more numerous. They rarely conflicted.

The benefit - if any - of government organization came days or weeks later.

Most people have lost the plot on this, and the press and Dems (BIRM) never had it in the first place.

When he took office, Trump divested his businesses and put them in a trust. Was this just a paper trust with no meaning? Maybe so. His family ran it. But he did at least make the gesture. But beyond that, he surrendered the profits from foreign dignitaries staying at Trump properties to ensure there was no appearance of conflict of interest. If a foreign official spent $10k at a Trump hotel and the hotel had a 15% profit margin, the Trump Organization trust sent a check for $1,500 to the US Treasury.

There is no there there when it comes to this crap, and that they're trotting it out *again* indicates that they're throwing the kitchen sink at Trump to rack up as many indictments as possible.

Yes, there's also that angle. But Trump *did* give away his businesses when he became the president and sacrificed profits to ensure that there would be no appearance of a conflict of interest. Those parts will be left out, of course, in the narrative they're trying to craft.

A man renting hotel rooms to the public - some of whom are foreign officials - is absolutely the same as the Big Guy getting 10% and the drug-addled kid selling unremarkable artworks at stupendous premiums to foreign dignitaries as a part of a transparent quid pro quo.
