Fat nepot grifter cvnt. Update:At least he's being honest here. This is the core division on the right - those that believe in vox populi, and those that believe in the gatekeepers and institutions. Buckley famously said that he'd rather be governed by the first 50 names in the phone book than by the faculty of Harvard (or something to that effect, not looking that up). Most of us here agree with Buckley. Jonah and his ilk have a fundamental distrust of the people, which coincidentally, seems to have sprouted right around the time that the people quit buying his bullshit. Posted by: Milquetoast Mortgage-Paying Neighbor in Flyover CountryPerfect. If large donors care more about who can win than which candidate most matches their policy preferences, what exactly is the point of donating money? It's not to help that candidate to win because the candidates probability of victory is a precondition of donating money to the campaign. Seems like Jonah is just straight up admitting that billionaire donors are better because they're looking for kickbacks and special privileges. Which is a pretty weird thing for a "conservative" to say. They've been running this con -- "We need to push for our unpopular agenda not your unpopular agenda, because we can't win with your unpopular agenda, only our own unpopular agenda" -- for fifty fucking years. They refuse to finally get it that this Con the Rubes ploy just doesn't work any longer. Trump proved that our "unpopular agenda" was in fact very popular -- much more popular than that of the Corporate class.

I know traditionally, the conservative position has been absolutely no rules regarding campaign finance (with even MegaCorps getting to donate) but I'm starting to think it would work to conservative's best interest if say the maximum donation could be like $200 to a candidate.
Of course, there's simply too many outside groups, but if we truly could have a system where the max any person could give would be a small amount, you'd see a dramatically different kind of government. Posted by: Blago at August 10, 2023 03:20 PM (9zh4W) 28

"And this claque of billionaire donors has made sure that every Republican presidential candidate must put the unpopular position of tax cuts for corporations and the very wealthy as the absolute top priority..."
--- I think it goes way beyond tax cuts. I think the donor class essentially runs the country, and an oversimplification would be the old model of Democrats having domestic programs as their corporate donor class, and Republicans having the M.I.C. as their corporate donor class. Nowadays, they both genuflect to the M.I.C., but also the greenies, the NWOs, and Big Pharma. Tax cuts? How 80s! We're all about perpetual war and the next plandemic now. Big donors are how the GOP became moderate, which is to say liberal, on illegal immigration, an issue that the public in general, and the GOP base in particular, are well to the right of public policy. Illegal immigration is popular with big donors and unpopular with the electorate as a whole. One of the reasons Trump was able to break through the blue wall in 2016 was his repudiation of the big donors' position on illegal immigration.

Posted by: Mister Scott (Formerly GWS) at August 10, 2023 03:22 PM (QNSds) ======== The real problem is that the big dollar donors won't let their paid shills lie about something like immigration. Immigration is way too important to them to even allow a scintilla of doubt in their minds about the intentions of those they've bought. It's why Scott Walker's campaign flamed out in 2016 and no one with serious dollars behind them said anything remotely like Trump about immigration (except, arguably, Ted Cruz). Ace, that's only half the story.
Up until about twenty years ago, across the board tax cuts were not popular overall, but they were popular with Republicans. Once the GOPe made it clear that not only did they not want to fight illegal immigration, they actually wanted MORE of it, the Republican base voters ceased to support the tax cuts as well. Granted that Trump did enact tax cuts--although significantly smaller than either the Reagan or Bush 43 tax cuts--and they did work, they still were unpopular and were a drag on his popularity. The fact is that we need deep tax cuts and deep spending cuts if we ever want to have a better standard of living than we do today. AND WE WILL NEVER GET THE SUPPORT FOR THOSE WITHOUT A POPULIST AGENDA EVEN STRONGER THAN TRUMP'S. Posted by: Ken at August 10, 2023 03:34 PM (7PDge) 125

This is what capture of the political system looks like. Those buying either party (or both parties) are more alike than they are different. So they want similar things - or at least, they want *their* thing and will compromise on everything else.
The rubes? Who cares what the rubes want? When the parties converge on an issue, the fix is in. For example, when Republicans and Democrats converged on border policies in the early 90s. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at August 10, 2023 03:32 PM (WkNQM) I think the R party went through this before the D party did, but they're both doing it now. What does your "base" want? And even that, we're probably past the pandering phase, now that voting is no longer about getting more people to, you know, cast votes for you. People engage in ad hominem because Goldberg is so unserious it doesn't demand an intellectual response. He is essentially dumping on the Declaration and Constitution by bleating the people, because of their stature or opinions are beneath consideration and contemptible. Instead he promotes the aristocracy not just because they pay for his Cheetos, but because he's a dishonest, lazy intellectual slob who mimics what he has read, or perhaps the script he believes best suits his grift. He argues in pure fallacy, ad nauseum, and it's not only boring, but tendentious as to the cause not of freedom and liberty, but to tyranny and peremptoriness. He's a lazy slob whose personal hygiene is abominable and is only outdone by his intellectual slovenliness.

258 This is one reason I avoid political books from bloggers or people on the internet: I've already read their arguments. I've already read their anecdotes. I do not need to buy a book to read them again and preserve this wisdom. If it had merit, I'll remember it.

Posted by: polynikes at August 10, 2023 03:55 PM (RUOzb) Agreed. I have Manafort's book, as well as Kushner's. There's a lot of great inside baseball stuff in those books that I like a lot. Coulter, at her prime, was fantastic (her arguments in Godless (IIRC) against abortion and evolution were both very good). Even Luntz's book Words That Work has gems in it. Why not election certifiers? Posted by: BurtTC The system is supposed to prevent this. Each precinct is supposed to have tallies, ballots, voting regs, records, etc. all reviewed by observers and sealed and presented to the board for certification. (And auditable if necessary) What seems overlooked is that this whole system was thrown out when the Dems "upgraded" to electronic voting books, centralized counting, and computer voting. This was a 2 decade project. In past, inner cities were never auditable as they showed up with none of the numbers matching and the boards just shook their head and certified. THAT IS A BIG PROBLEM since once you admit numbers don't match, it can never be audited. It is ripe for fraud, but it was allowed since only in inner cities and to toss those votes would have been "racist." The dems only expanded a known working system of fraud. And this claque of billionaire donors has made sure that every Republican presidential candidate must put the unpopular position of tax cuts for corporations and the very wealthy as the absolute top priority -- and then they tell the rest of us, "We can't afford the political hit of pushing your unpopular positions, we have to spend every dime of our political capital pursuing only the agenda of the ultra-rich and the corporate establishment."

Jonah is forgetting that most billionaire donors are paying for access and special favors for themselves, not for the “people” and not with the country’s best interests at heart. In fact, one could argue that most of their issue positions are contrary to what most people want.
The very premise of Jonah’s argument is wrong. By definition populism represents what the majority wants. And so by definition, populist candidates are more likely to be elected than candidates who reject populist positions. So if you’re arguing electability, you’d support populist candidates.
