Last week I wrote about the discovery of a secret China-linked biolab in an ostensibly empty warehouse outside Fresno California. It was, needless to say, a disturbing story. We aren't talking about some sterile, well-controlled biological research facility that hadn't kept up with all its paperwork. No, this was a hidden lab piled with chemicals, boxes, refrigerators with chemicals and 20 deadly viruses, and genetically engineered mice that had been bred to catch and spread human viruses like COVID-19. It was in an ostensibly abandoned warehouse, and when the inspectors showed up the lab equipment had been hastily turned off before whoever was working there disappeared. The power was off, but the freezers were still cold. People disappeared quickly, leaving behind a lot of documents in Chinese and a "President" who is available only by email from China. The president claimed the lab was merely storing defunct equipment, but there were live genetically engineered mice and the viruses stored in freezers. It's all very sketchy, to say the least. Not to sound paranoid or anything, but a Chinese biolab hidden in an abandoned warehouse with deadly viruses and genetically engineered mice discovered after a major pandemic that killed millions might lead one to wonder what exactly is going on. That's according to the CDC, which says that there is "rising evidence that leprosy has become endemic in the southeastern United States." Leprosy, also called Hanson's Disease, is an infection caused by slow-growing bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae, according to the CDC. "It can affect the nerves, skin, eyes, and lining of the nose (nasal mucosa)." Up to 2 million people worldwide are permanently disabled from the disease, which can be transmitted by "prolonged, close contact with someone with untreated leprosy over many months." It is thought to be spread via respiratory droplets--or even contact with armadillos. The CDC, which now apparently believes in natural immunity again, says, "more than 95% of all people have natural immunity to the disease." But in a Research Letter published in the August 2023 edition of the Emerging Infections Diseases journal, researchers from the Kansas City University--Graduate Medical Education/Advanced Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery Consortium raised concerns about the rise in the number of cases in the U.S... That led researchers to suspect "that international migration of persons with leprosy is a potential source of autochthonous transmission." They noted that "The number of international migrants in North America increased from 27.6 million persons in 1990 to 58.7 million in 2020, so a link to migration may account for the increase in incidence of leprosy in historically nonendemic areas."With leprosy coming across the border, it's just the absolute perfect time for Biden's Woke Pentagon to pull 1,100 troops from the border, so that's exactly what they're doing.

There are two kinds of leprosy, the kind that attacks the nerves, and the kind that produces the classic "parts falling off" syndrome. As far as I know, Western medicine knew more than fifty years ago that you had to have close and prolonged contact with the leper of the second type to develop that form of the disease. (I'll leave it to the student to decide what "close and prolonged contact" means here.)
The other kind, I'm not sure it can be transmitted easily if at all.

I believe I've read that the armadillo is the only mammal besides man who can contract leprosy. They were using the dunny-looking critters to try to find treatments or cures. The agent is a bacterium, not a virus, and it probably would respond well to antibiotics.
It's a sluggish and near-comatose bacterium, thank God.

A few years ago I was driving home. There weren't many cars on the road and everyone was exceeding the artificially low speed limit posted.
I had left plenty of distance between me and the car in front of me so when it break lights went on I took my foot off the gas and then realized he wasn't just slowing down he had slammed his breaks.
So...I slammed mine...and the car behind me and so on.
There wasn't an accident but it was close. What caused the guy in front of me to slam on his breaks? A kid on the highway? An animal? Debris? No...there was a cop on the side of the road with a radar gun.
But...remember its for safety that we have cops ticketing people for exceeding the speed limit. Even if literally everyone exceeds the speed limit because it has been set too low.

Isn't one of the games police departments play with this is to say there are no ticket quotas but it's understood that if you don't have a certain number of "encounters" or "interactions" per month - that do involve tickets - you'll basically be stuck on traffic duty for the rest of your career?

Driving though one southern state years ago I was in the middle lane going with the flow of traffic. I saw a cop coping up in the rear view so I moved over to the right lane and dropped my speed.
The guy that had been ahead of me in the middle lane also dropped his speed. But when the cop caught up with him the cop started tailgating the guy getting closer and closer and closer.
Eventually the guy in the middle late bumped his speed up to 58 or so...and the cop lights come on.
It was...bullshit.

In both cases, I think they've tried to do the adulting thing, but it's not really working for either of them. As opposed to, say, Jonah Hill, who's carved out something of a career for himself by more or less typecasting himself as, maybe you'd call it a Woody Allen lite persona.

We saw "Babylon" the other night and much to my surprise, it was very good, near great.
Though the movie is about the time when silents changed to talkies,
The movie it reminded me most of was one of my favorites, "O Lucky Man!".
Not that the stories or settings are alike. But, "Babylon" hits several of the same beats and plot points as OLM, and the endings are almost exactly the same in much the same way.
I bet OLM was a major influence on the writing of this movie. Also, "Day of the Locust" and "Singin' in the Rain" for sure and maybe "Wolf of Wall Street' find their way into the mix,
Like OLM "Babylon" wants to say something about life
Acting,direction, etc were all excellent.
"Babylon" definitely isn't for everyone, but if you think you might like it, you probably will.

I've been to Wrigley Field. It's nice. I'd never go back to Chitcago just to go there though.
I'm into the "fan experience," but not in the way MLB practices it these days. I've seen games at Tiger Stadium, and old Cleveland Municipal, and would call those "fan experiences" to be magnificent.
But they tear those places down, for sterile, olde tyme stadiums that somehow manage to be less "fan friendly" in my opinion, than the cookie cutter multipurpose stadiums of the 60s and 70s.

Yeah. I am referring to the 'basket' that is in the outfield. It is a rigid net at a 45 degree angle, the edge of which is maybe 12 feet above the outfield. Very unlikely a player can jump high enough to catch and steal a home run. Plus, it is pretty much a digital outcome - definitely a home run, or not.
I hate some of the outfield designs where the fence is seven foot high, with fans leaning over. Or, a stupid yellow line halfway up a wall, so you have to go to video to determine if it is a home run.

I brought it with me to read when I road-tripped to palo Duro Canyon in the TX Panhandle -- the Comanches' winter quarters. The town of Quanah on the Red River is named for the half-white chief, Quanah Parker. Solid book and it taught me that the Apaches, you know, those fierce and widely-feared-by-whites raiders and horsemen? *They* were afraid of the Comanches.
