Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Guinea pigs are hybrids . . .

Very popular (as pets) in Switzerland. It is against the law in parts of Switzerland to keep a single Guinea Pig as a pet. It must have a friend. I believe that you must also talk to them in baby talk. Preferably in your native dialect.

Meet The PetMorons

Temporary PetMoron:

yng robbin.jpg

Hi KT, not sure whether this belongs in the "Garden" or "Pet" threads--

My weekend walks take me through a strip mall, and passing through, this fellow (or gal, I can't tell) decided to let me know that he was hungry and wanted food. I had no food with me, but despite his disappointment he allowed me to take a few photos.

I met a fellow out birding later, and he told me this was a young robin. This bird had absolutely no fear of me; I got within a few inches of him to take the pictures and he really seemed more interested in food and what kind I might have with me (which was none, alas). Clearly others were feeding him, so he's used to people. I told him that the restaurants were further down.

Thanks again for the weekend threads!

Two years ago, about, a stray or possibly feral cat invited herself into our house. We accepted that we had a new cat. Within a few weeks, her middle section began taking on a spherical shape. "That cat's pregnant," I surmised. A trip to the vet confirmed it. We gave her the name Bean after the character on "Disenchanted."

On the last day of July, 2021 Bean disdained the various boxes we had positioned around the house and gave birth to four kittens inside our couch. Not intending to keep them, we gave them designations in place of names. Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, and Tango.

We didn't intend to keep them, but The Mister fell in love with Charlie's "Derpy" face. And while I was doing some work on my laptop, a two-week old Bravo trundled over to me and fell asleep on my elbow. I decided I was keeping him.

My sister (bless her name) found a home for Alpha and Tango. Two years on, Bravo and Charlie are valued members of the team. And Bean ... who doesn't like other cats ... has become an alley cat with basement privileges. When not prowling the neighborhood, she hangs out in our basement to stay dry, warm, and safe.

Handsome Bravo wears the orange safety jacket. Charlie is in pink. Bean observes the neighborhood from the roof of the shed.

Fosters, from Bruce:

two rescuues b.png

K.T.,

After our Labrador seeing eye dog passed away in May 2022, we fostered two rescue dogs.

Kenzie is on the left. She was found by Surfers for Strays (https://www.surfersforstrays.org/home) in San Diego. What was to be a two-week foster with us turned into 8 months. She now lives in Irvine CA.

The dog on the right is Jet. He was found in a hoarding situation in Los Angeles with 15 other dogs. He spent too much time in a crate, was malnourished and unneutered.

Apparently he was rescued shortly before he was to be put down at the city animal shelter.

Over several months we got his weight up and he was neutered.

He is quite the lover boy in that he always wants to be with his human. He was adopted to a home in Garden Grove. We hope to dog sit him in the future.

Both of these dogs were placed by SAFE Rescue Team (https://saferescueteam.org/).

What a wonderful way to remember your seeing eye dog. They look like wonderful dogs.

And Bruce's adoptee!

bruce dogg.png

From a family in Long Beach, via ESRA (English Springer Rescue America https://www.springerrescue.org/), we adopted Buster.

I had an English Springer Spaniel as a child/teen and have always liked the breed.

Buster is an active four-year old who enjoys his walks. He has grooming scheduled for August 2nd.

I'm sure you will love having Buster in the family!

Before and After Bo - Copy.jpg

Greetings fellow AoS pet enthusiasts,

I can't remember if I had ever sent in photos previously in regards to Bo. I found him outside the building where I work, the front desk personnel stated they had seen him for the past couple of weeks and were throwing him some scraps now and again and hadn't seen the mother for quite some time. I asked if they had called animal control or someone else to get him because he only looked to be about 8 weeks old. They stated no.

I am not a cat person by any standards, however, I can't stand to see any animal be neglected. So I set out with some cooked chicken and a box and he's been a member of the household ever since. I believe he's of the Manx line due to the semi-bobbed tail. He gets along well with our, well, my wife's other two cats, one of which is a full bob-tail. As a cat, he doesn't do anything special, as most cats don't, but, he does provide some nice lap warming in the winter and does like to be petted and has a meow that you have to really struggle to hear. As far as the name, my wife was taking him to the vet for initial checks and asked me what we are going to name him. I asked her to look at signs along the road going to the vet. She was naming some off and then came across Bojangles. It thought it was fitting seeing the condition he was living in at the time, so just Bo for short. The photos are the before and after of Mr. Bojangles. The second was just taken today of him hanging out under our elephant ears on a hot and humid July afternoon. Best wishes to all, love scrolling through the Pet Thread.

Meet Vanna.

She was adopted by my aunt Karen when she was 2 years old. After my aunt passed away my mom took care of her. After mom passed away uncle G took her under his wing. She loved to ride around in his scooter, hang on the front porch in the sun. When uncle G passed last year she became my little love.
We were inseparable and my husband fell head over heels for this little princess. Vanna passed away a little over a week ago. She was 15. I am heartbroken. Rainbow Bridge awaits us all I smile through the tears.

Oh, she loved toast. And hanging around in her sweatshirt.

Mpfs

So sorry you lost sweet Vanna.

Already queen! Kai looks good-natured, though.

Arf Arf Meow

We have, for now, finally moved past the 100° days, with a blast of thunderstorm that rolled through this morning. Daisy and I on our morning walk barely made it back to the house in time.

Sweet release.

Had to forego our usual game of fetch after the walk. I was trying to write this up before the pet thread, but whiney doggie insisted it was now dry enough we could play fetch. And she was right. Dog sure loves to run run run!

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at August 05, 2023 03:50 PM (yMEwp)

15 We had a guinea pig for a while. He was fun and a sweet pet. We had to learn as we went and probably did w everything wrong. He didn't have a buddy other than us. Our cat at the time was an absolute terror so we didn't let him roam free through the house without supervision. His water bottle was a constant leaky battlw so we were always changing wet bedding/litter.

I'd do it all over again differently. He loved hay and parsley and cucumber. Got a tumor on his face and respiratory infection, wound up needing put down.

Bittersweet. He was a good boy. I wish I had gotten the cage and water figured out better. Mrs. Reason thinks the respiratory thing was from the leaky bottle.

16 If you do FB, join "We Love Our Springers". Such a wonderful bunch of folks.

One of the group, a police officer in rural England, would do these funny posts as his dog Barney. He came up with the term "sniffari", which really what dogs do on walks. Barney started having problems walking. You have never seen anyone take such tender care of a dog. Barney passed away on Friday and it felt like we'd lost our own dog. That group is really the only reason I'm on FB.

26 In this old concrete barn in which we dwell, the front door is tricky. It's a handle, not a knob, and if you aren't careful, it's possible it won't latch quite right and it can be pushed open.

The several times Daisy, the overly-affectionate Malinois, has let herself out the door, I'm never sure if she just pushed it open, or if she's actually figured out to paw down the handle.

Yesterday, hottest part of the day, suddenly, Daisy got up and let herself out. I grabbed a leash to go after her. Saw her run off to the higher grass east of the house, squat (when y'gotta go, y'gotta go!), and then… she came running back and into the house. I think she figured out it was too hot to stay out. She's not as dumb as she seems sometimes. Good dog.

Posted by: mindful webworker - all natural at August 05, 2023 03:59 PM (bEsYk)

27 And Mr Trouble is in the house. Started favoring his front leg about four days ago. Yesterday, he was hobbling around and didn't want it to touch the ground. That foot has swollen to twice the size of the other and he has been staying under the house. So I moved the big crate by the back door. When him gave up to me for food, I snatched him up, took him inside and put him in the crate. He was scared the first night but has calmed down. He's a smart cat and I think he knows he needs a safe place for now. Will go to the vet on Monday. I'm starting to think this is an absess as it may be starting to drain. Will find out if this is a permanent move indoors.

People don't believe me when I tell them Woolworth's in our downtown area ca. 1963 used to sell pets: golden hamsters (we had two pairs at different times), parakeets, mynah birds, and (!) baby alligators. They never sold guinea pigs that I recall, or I'd have wanted one. They're very handsome when I see them at Petco.

34 "Sniffari" definitely describes my walks with our dog, Luna, in the mornings. We walk between 7 and 8 in the morning so it's still pretty pleasant, but we will both be glad when the first hints of fall arrive...in 6-8 weeks from now.

35 Ruby ate a couple of mice she caught up at the land at Willow. Then she began furiously eating grass. Finally Sunday night she barfed up the whole disgusting mess on the carpet. And then began the nonsense.

She kept puking, until it was nothing but dry heaves Tuesday. Off the ER Vet. They couldn't figure it out, but put her on antiemetics and sent her home. By Friday no improvement. So, back to the ER Vet, whereupon they discovered that she had eaten so much grass so fast, it had impacted around her larynx and wasn't coming out. Put her under and extracted the ungodly mess, prednisone for a week, and all is right with the world again. After dropping $2K....

39 Bo the white-and-black kitten should simply have been called Lucky or Lucky Pierre. His tail may be bobbed, but he looks like a medium-hair like my big black Stirling; so if there's Manx in his background there is something else with longer fur too.

If Bean were really feral she wouldn't have come indoors to VTK's house. She, Bravo, and Charlie are all super lucky as well. As was Mpfs's Vanna, who had so many homes and a long happy life too.

My two feline thugs are corking along nicely: They slept with me this afternoon, and when I got up they trotted out to their favorite nap spots in the living room with me. Labor Day will mark one year since I adopted little Siberian girl Dagny -- a year of living dangerously, indeed.

Cats love warmth even when it's excessive by human standards. When Arizona the red tabby was about five, we moved to an upstairs apartment with window A/C units. Since I couldn't let those run all day, I left the screened windows open for him for air when I went off to work the first Monday after we moved. I worried that he would be too hot.

Ha. I came home to find him lying in the warmest room -- in a patch of sunlight.

48 Progress report. Precious, our little Bichon senior continues to be a joy. Every day a bit more personality comes out as she knows she is safe and comfortable. The stairs were an obstacle at first until she got used to them. Now they are a magic carpet that lets her go wherever we are in the house. She sleeps a lot, as an old dog will, but her tail wags more each day. Always eager for walks and the chance for getting petted. And she wants proximity. Her favorite place is curled up by our feet.

Good for both of you. Cats hate change but they love novelty. It makes no human sense, but there it is. Crazily, I moved Arizona the big red tabby a bunch of times over sixteen years, and he hated going into the carrier and all the noise and disruption. Then, when everyone was gone, I'd let him out and leave him alone while he explored. He always conquered and settled his new territory in a day or so.

And the thick yellow sunlight is back peeking around the blackout drapes. So much for my hopes.

Baby Dagny is curled on my briefcase on my old armchair, and big black Stirling is behind me atop the couch.

66 Jake only likes poems if something rhymes with "dog treats". It is our thing, a mile and a half away. I go unless the weather is awful.

All of the breeds that look so much like the dog's wolf ancestor are very handsome creatures -- huskies, German shepherds, etc.

70 We live in an old church. The vestibule is uninsulated and un-AC'd. It gets toasty when the weather is warm. Charlie loves it out there.

71 Jewells,
It's just so lovely you have been able to keep volunteering at Shep's.

Good on you, sweet lady.

72 I had a rescue puppy for a while. I was at Ft. Gordon, GA in the spring of 1970. I was staying in the BOQ (bachelors officers quarters) at the time. I went to the post office one Sunday and saw something moving in the bushes. It was a little puppy. His eves were still closed and his umbilical was still raw. Couldn't have been more that a day or two old when someone dumped him.

I raised him on milk and syrup through a baby bottle. I carried him around tucked between my fatique blouse and undershirt, as all I had for transportation was a Honda 90 motorcycle at the time. Kept him on one of my sweaters in a paper bag otherwise. Had a clock ticking under the sweater.

The BOQ there was a part of the recovery wing the Ft Gordon hospital. It was the amputee center for the Army then. I was probably the only guy there that had all of his arms and legs.

When puppy was getting around and was almost on solid food,I gave him to a one legged guy who was going home. Hope they comforted one another.

This will probably willowed but it helped my mood writing it.
