Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Mitch McConnell Now Has a "Biden Moment" That Looks Like a Neurological EpisodeI do not mean any disrespect to our elders, but we must end the Perpetual Gerontocracy in the Senate. And Mitch McConnell has to be the first to go.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters that he's "fine," after freezing during a news conference on Wednesday. McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, stopped speaking in the middle of remarks at his regularly scheduled weekly news conference on Capitol Hill. After a 30-second pause, his colleagues crowded around to see if he was OK and asked him how he felt. GOP Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming was seen gripping McConnell's arm and whispered to him, "Hey Mitch, anything else you want to say? Or should we just go back to your office? Do you want to say anything else to the press?" He said nothing, and was led away from the press conference and towards his office by an aide. He returned to the news conference a few minutes later. McConnell, asked by CNN what happened and if it is related to his fall earlier this year, said "No, I'm fine," and then moved on to other reporters. A McConnell aide said that the senator "felt light headed and stepped away for a moment."That's from CNN. Nice of them to notice an elderly politician is having neurological problems and might not be fit for the job. Wonder when they'll notice Joe Biden's dementia. "I'm fine," McConnell says, and refuses to say more about his episode. Incidentally, Kentucky has a Democrat governor. So if Mitch McConnell dies or has to resign, the Democrat appoints his replacement. The legislature anticipated this and passed a law over the governor's veto that he could only pick a replacement from a list of candidates submitted by the (Republican) legislature, but Bashear says that's unconstitutional and will ignore it. This could have been avoided if McConnell had retired last time. Or the time before that. But they never do. They cling to power like dehydrated ticks. It's only the power that sustains these husks. The deal in Kentucky regarding McConnell, if he has to step down or croaks is like this; Bashear is the governor, a democrat. The KY constitution says if a member of congress dies, or resigns his/her office for whatever reason the governor must choose a person off a list provided by the party currently holding the congressional office.
Bashear says it's unconstitutional (Kentucky's constitution) and will ignore it. If it comes to this I foresee a lengthy legal fight. Actually that UFO hearing was planned some months ago. I'll watch it all later. There was an Air Force officer earlier who swore under oath that the US government has a) the remains of a non-human biological "pilot" and b) technology not of this earth. One thing driving these times is two generations - Silents and Boomers - that simply can't come to terms with letting go of power. I think it's mortality driven. Two groups simply scared as shit to die. Covid rustled their jimmies. It was mortality staring them in the face.
The other thing really is rent seeking. Silents and Boomers are all on the hunt for that guaranteed income. Rent. Pure and simple. Posted by: The Way It Is at July 26, 2023 04:00 PM (7bopJ) Bless your heart. Posted by: Dr. Pork Chops & Bacons at July 26, 2023 04:07 PM (BdMk6) 472

And ultimately it leads to MORE laziness. Used to do empirical work about that. The relationship (at least in the 90's through McCain Feingold) was that the relationship between money and campaign victory is non linear. My results from same party primaries and general elections at the time indicated that perhaps the relationship was a cubic function---basically a certain amount of money is necessary to get in the game which is also probably correlated with district political support anyway, then the relationship between money spent and a chance of victory goes negative until you reach a point where gobs and gobs of money like Corzine v. Franks in NJ or Michael Huffington for a CA congressional seat buy you the election in effect and the relationship becomes positive again.
This was also before widespread electronic voting platforms though. Posted by: whig at July 26, 2023 04:11 PM (9hLLz) 496

Some people have no choice. This. One big medical expense, particularly if you don't have employer provided medical insurance, can wipe out all your savings. If you are the healthy one, you work to put food on the table and keep the lights on. Or, if your loved one dies, you keep working because it fills the hours. Not everyone works because they are greedy. Posted by: Moki at July 26, 2023 04:19 PM (JrN/x) 510

I have neuropathy, an essential tremor and declining vision and knew it was time to get out of the game when I was 62 after a young patient asked me (while I was doing an ultrasound study) "Why does your hand shake like that?" McConnell has been a truly loathsome person over the last twenty-plus years, going out of his way to wreck real conservative candidates of both the Tea Party and MAGA. He not only has sabotaged careers but damaged the personal reputations of those he deemed a threat to his hold on power in the Senate, with zero remorse for his actions. He is a despicable man and one hopes he has his comeuppance. Despite all that, I can't wish death on someone. Even him. But Mitch certainly doesn't get a penny of my sympathy. Just saying.
