Politico has a masculinity issue.
I mean, you knew that. Just... look at them. But what I mean is, they now have a "Masculinity Issue." Via David Strom, Politico decided to take on a topic in which they have obviously no experience or grounding. If you're thinking the men at Politico know very little about masculinity, except perhaps to admire a man's strength as he mounts his wife from the rear with a powerful thrust that reminds him of his first day at boarding school, don't even worry about it. Politico's men know they belong in the Cvck Closet. So instead, the entire "Masculinity Issue" is written by "sneering feminist" women.
All the essays are written by women. Every single one. Now one would think, given the large number of men out there who have written about this issue they might have found one. Reeves, perhaps, who after all comes from an ideologically sympatico think tank. Or, perhaps, find a conservative woman who has thought deeply about these issues, of whom there are many. No, Politico chose a cadre of feminists to sneer at the idea that men literally dying younger and younger, falling behind in schools, no longer going to college, and dropping out of society and relationships is a bad thing. Girl power! It's disgusting.I've previously recommended getting in walks and hikes regularly. I guess I should have been more sensitive -- it turns out, Black people aren't allowed to hike. Or camp. Nature has some kind of racist policy excluding Black people. But don't worry -- NBC "News" now reports for the first time in history, Black people are now allowed to go on walks.
I couldn't help but feel anxious as I drove deeper into rural northern Texas. The familiar coffee shops and apartment buildings of downtown Dallas faded into swaths of land with cattle and single-family homes surrounded by greenery in Allen. I would be spending the weekend in native Blackland Prairie grassland for Texas Survival School's basic wilderness survival class. My friends and family had mixed reactions when I told them I'd be with a bunch of strangers camping and learning to build a fire, navigate land, deliver "wilderness" first aid, learn water safety and more. Some thought it cool and exciting, others delivered a familiar axiom, "That's white people stuff!" So I wasn't surprised that most of the two dozen participants -- a mix of adults and children -- were white. I was one of four Black people in the class, including three Black men, one of whom was an instructor. I was the only Black woman, and I caught curious glances from some of the other participants as I piled my box braids on top of my head to keep the bugs out of my hair.Yes, none of us whities have ever seen a black woman before in our lives. Or braids. No white women braid their hair. You're right to suspect we're "glancing at you curiously," rather than just looking at every single person in the room at one time or another because we've gone out to meet new people in a group and when you do that, you look at everyone present. If white people weren't looking she'd complain that they were averting their eyes.
... Taking this wilderness class seemed like a natural extension of my love of the outdoors, but my own isolation in the course made me wonder whether the old axiom was true to an extent. Was communing deeply with nature truly a "white thing?" I found that that couldn't be further from the truth. Not only does Black culture boast a rich history with nature, Black people across the country are reclaiming the outdoors by forming their own communities of nature enthusiasts.In other word: segregated black groups to "reclaim the outdoors."

I've also decided to take my weight training more seriously. I'd lost the regularity of my routine over the summer, but a visit from my family, especially conversations with my cousin with whom I'm connected through Peloton and we compare results, made me get back into it.
No weight loss, but I do feel like definition is coming back.

I've been going to the gym regularly (4-5 times a week). My wife got annoyed at herself one night, noticing that I had a bit of definition. She said that if she had only been as committed to going as I was, she could also be seeing some gains.
Like a dummy, I reminded her that even if you go, you still need to work hard at it. Which was my idiotic way of saying, "I've seen you work out."
But still, point stands. You either go in and work hard or you go in and waste your time.

Doing something, anything, consistently is a good use of your time. You don't have to lift to failure to get results. You get MORE results with more intensity, but you still get good stuff out of regular mild exercise.

I am 40 pounds lighter than a year ago. I weigh 2 pounds more than I did in the Service when I was running 1K every other day. Alas, I have more flab than the muscle I had back then, and I have a wife rather than a French girlfriend. But I did take my wife to meet my Mom when she was alive. I could not take the French girlfriend home to Mom. Would not be prudent.

Black military families. When I was in and, and then continued on as a civilian contractor, the black guys and black families were out there with RVs, bass boats, kayaks, snowshoeing, backpacking etc.
Always enjoyed the hell out of it and they were some damn fine soldiers and friends too.
It's a cultural thing, not the melanin content.
Greats and more younger civilian blacks are getting into the great outdoors. Too bad it's a cultural Marxist circle jerk excuse to perpetuate racism and segregation...

Got LASIK almost 3 weeks ago. My eyesight is 20/20 or better now. Still have some slight glare on direct light sources, but I forget about it most of the time.
I still go to take off my glasses every time I take a shower, though, only to find that nothing is there.

When I was training for Spartan races circa 2015, I would hit up Mt Tamminy, Mount Minsi and Apshawa Preserve every weekend to hike and trail run.
Didn't see a single black person, almost exclusively honky's and Asians (Proper and Dot) occasional Hispanic.
I don't know, this is just a thought, perhaps black people do not want to hike and be in the woods.
This impulse to force black people into the woods and making white people feel guilty about it, may be....

Watched Jobless Reincarnation (Mushoku Tensei) a while back and enjoyed it. Since 2nd season was about to come out I rewatched the first season and *really* enjoyed it.
It's impressive that I liked the series more the 2nd time I saw it.

I spent a week in the mid-80s at Smuggler's Notch in VT.
Concurrently, there were 3 Busloads of Black people from Boston and NY there. Literally skiing down the slopes with Boom Boxes on their shoulders.
It was a blast. We had a ton of fun that week. No racisms in sight.

When I was in high school we would often go to Loon Mountain to ski. One of our friends family had a ski house in the area and they would let us bring sleeping bags and sleep in their finished basement.
We would often see a group of black skiers that wore matching white one piece ski suits with Black Ski Club stitched in the back. They were a fun group that just liked to ski. Nobody gave a shit about race. All of this crap started with Obama and he did it on purpose.

Last time that was true for me was a business unit that was plain incompetent. The director got fired and replaced by a man who was equally incompetent. I've worked with some VERY sharp female-dominated business units.
In many cases, these are women who also have young kids, and they have only so much time for so much bullshyte. They've braided three heads of hair and mopped up a bowl of cream of wheat before they've left the house, they have to call the baby sitter twice during the day to make sure all is well, they have to split the office at 5:17 no questions asked to relieve the baby sitter and make some insta-spaghetti for dinner, and they get enough tears and hurt feelings at home thank you very much go cry in the ladies room if you need to.

It is literary, weird, opaque, and distancing. I loved it.
It's also weirdly episodic for the first three books with the final book bringing everything together, not in any sort of explicit way, but in a weird, swirl of events where you just realize that everything was building up to this.
I've read that the final book, The Urth of the New Sun, makes everything more explicit and obvious, though I haven't gotten to that yet. I think I started reading it in high school but never finished it. I remember the main character wandering around a boat in space, and that's about it.

This business of working out or playing hard until it hurts may be a thing that you have to "get" in childhood or you never get it. When I was a kid we NEVER walked anywhere; we raced. Our big brothers chased us and beat us up and we had to wrastle away. We sweated like mad every day and on Saturdays we took ballet classes that stretched us like Gumbys.
I met people later in life who stopped trying the minute it stopped hurting. I thought, You're never gonna improve.

Ha. Well, one thing that helped me was understanding that your body can usually push further than your brain. Setting artificial limits generally means leaving reps on the table. Those reps are the ones that make the difference.
Maybe try being subtle and telling her to push for one or two more reps at the end of each set?

She likes the feeling of high-intensity cardio workouts with dumbells, but it's all the high-rep, HIIT type stuff. And a random selection and mixture of classes, with no path or any type of metric to measure progress.
I do a progressive-overload based 5-day split lifting routine, and log every weight, rep and set. After recovering from spine surgery, I figured getting leaner and stronger would be my best defense against getting old. In January, I couldn't do 1 pullup unassisted. Yesterday got 3 sets of 10.
This shit ain't supposed to be fun or imaginative. It's supposed to get results.

I started riding bicycle again for the first time in a decade, which means my bike sat for a decade. It wasn't high end or light in the first place so while I'm tempted to be jealous of those distances, I just have to remember that it's effort and heart rate that matters most at this point. I was like you, once.
I loved the Hobbit. I saw Bashki’s LOTR. I read Fellowship of the Ring. And then I got bogged down in the Two Towers. This happened 5 times or so in 20 odd years.
Then the movies came, and I finally read all three books, and have read them twice since.
I was able to push through the Two Towers for two reasons.
1 - the movies showed me that THE BOOKS HAD AND ENDING AND I WOULDN’T BE TRAPPED IN THE TWO TOWERS FOREVER!
2 - I started really enjoying Tolkien’s poems, songs, and detailed descriptions of every step taken in Middle Earth. They are glorious features, not bugs. You are doomed if you don’t embrace his writing style.

She was very good, but I soon understood it was a big mistake becauseshe was very isolated in an all make engineering department and I didn't think she would last. I quickly hired a second woman and they became really good friends. Have had no dessert since May 8, celebrating my friend's birthday at Fogo de Chao. I've turned down "chocolate addiction" cake and homemade blueberry cobbler among other things. I now stroll through the grocery bakery with nary a wistful longing. (This is a BFD for me.) I will have dessert on my *mumble*-tieth birthday in a couple months.
Trying some supplements that are supposed to help with insulin resistance and/or perimenopause (sorry guys) - namely, magnesium, taurine, berberine, vitamin D + K2.
Yesterday was running day, so today is lifting day. I'll attempt 4 sets of 12 pushups along with my usual dumbbell stuff. *flexes*

I go to a state park near me a lot. I see a lot of white men with AA friends out in a boat fishing. I saw a boatload of AA men coming back two days ago lamenting the fact that the bass seem to have disappeared. AA men fish, boat, but I never see them hiking, paddle boarding in a thong, or kayaking.
I do appreciate any young women who paddle board in a thong, however. Just never see guys do it. But then I'm at least 10 miles away from garret. Fortunately.

I know I'm late to the thread, but I hope someone has pointed out that one of the reasons that the outdoors are exciting and fun is that they aren't necessarily safe... bugs, sunburn, getting lost, falling over a cliff, being eaten by a grizzly, breaking a leg, being shot in a drive-by.
Take away those and a hike is pretty boring. Might as well stay home.

I just realized I am now over 6 months into no added sugar/no white flour (plus other simple carbs) and wow! that went by quick.
my weight has stabilized at a really good place and I feel terrific still. for me anyway removing added sugar - and no fake sugar either - has just been amazing.
those supplements sound interesting! I take a multivitamin, D and C supps, plus ZMA at night time (zinc, magnesium, whatever the A is)

I can completely understand that. Getting bored of a routine makes going to the gym a PITA for me. I'm too old to be doing ALL leg day,s ALL arms days, ALL chest days, etc anyway so I just do a little of everything each visit.
These days an all leg DAY would mean "unable to walk WEEK" for me.
