THE MORNING RANT: At WSJ - The Challenge for Therapists in Treating People With “Unorthodox” Beliefs Such as Religious Faith or Free Speech; also, Universities’ Exploitation of Students Pursuing Social Work Degrees

Angry Counselor - Cartoon.JPG

There are countless examples of how thoroughly the radical left has captured just about every institution and intellectual discipline in this country, but a piece in the Wall Street Journal a few days ago emphatically drove the point home, by accepting the premise that conservatives, people of faith, and those who favor uncensored speech are “unorthodox.”

The thesis of the piece was that even though the fields of psychology and social work have become echo chambers of left-wing doctrine, the people employed in those fields should still compassionately treat those with different views, rather than treating them with scorn or hostility.

That’s a worthy notion, I suppose, but not when the entire piece accepts that the Overton Window of acceptable opinion has moved so far left that those with traditional values and opinions are now “unorthodox.”

The Doctor Won’t See You Now: Therapists who judge, recoil, or quietly rage at their patients can’t provide effective therapy

The large majority of the country has at least one “unorthodox” opinion—maybe a conservative political bent, a literal belief in the Bible or support for free speech even when it’s offensive. This includes centrists, moderates, libertarians, and many liberals, as well as people who are simply open-minded. These people need mental healthcare as much as anyone else, and they deserve a therapist who respects their values.

That is an amazing paragraph, but I am willing to consider that the author, Andrew Hartz, is attempting to use a little irony in his writing, thus the term “unorthodox” is being used as a euphemism for “mainstream.”

But the word “unorthodox” soon loses its scare quotes, and it gets used unironically thereafter.

Today, people with unorthodox beliefs face unprecedented antagonism, yet the mental health profession largely ignores them.

And again…

But instead of training therapists to help these people, schools increasingly teach students to view those with unorthodox opinions negatively.

This repeated usage completely inverts who is out of the mainstream. It accepts by definition that normal church-going conservatives who won’t muzzle their beliefs are “unorthodox,” while the left-wing radicals he is trying to persuade to be more tolerant are not labeled at all. Their left-wing extremism is now implicitly accepted as “orthodox.”

In fairness, I am going to share a couple of Hartz’s paragraphs where he identifies the politics and intolerance of those organizations which are clearly radicalized.

The same ideologies that have infiltrated education, medicine and the legal profession have also invaded mental healthcare. The American Psychological Association has decried “traditional masculinity.” The Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association published a paper describing “Whiteness” as a “malignant, parasitic-like condition.” Two years ago, a prominent psychiatrist speaking at Yale shared her fantasies of killing white people. Recently, the president of the APA’s division of psychoanalysis said that therapists should “center Palestine . . . as a central working tenet of any clinical praxis.”

Asking these people to provide counseling services to conservatives and independent
thinkers doesn’t sound like a very good idea to me.

These attitudes are more common than one might imagine. The most recent APA psychoanalysis conference, which has in the past focused on the practice of therapy, was absorbed by identity politics, such as “the white supremacist within” and “psychic colonization,” to quote two panel titles.

Rather than imploring radical left-wing psychologists to provide therapy to people even if they are “unorthodox,” perhaps the effort should be made to get those therapists to stop accepting the premise that a Bible-believing Republican who believes in free speech is “unorthodox.”

The National Association for Social Work, which represents many therapists, has a code of ethics requiring “all members of the social work profession to practice through an anti-racist and anti-oppressive lens.”

Wherever one is on the political spectrum, getting counseling or therapy from these people sounds like it would be an excruciating form of psychological abuse.

(h/t @physicsgeek who brought this story to my attention.)

*****

While on the subject of psychology and social work, there is a related topic that’s been bothering me for quite a while, specifically, the collusion between the university cartel and the licensing organizations for social work and psychology. To work in these fields, a Masters degree is required. That requirement is beyond preposterous, and it is exploitative of those choosing that career path when they enter college.

Do you want to be a speech pathologist? “Entering the field requires academic and clinical coursework and the successful completion of a master’s degree at an institution accredited by the American Speech-Hearing Association (ASHA).”

Or maybe you’d like to be a psychologist? A Master’s degree may not be enough. “Most psychologist positions require a doctoral degree in psychology, but the BLS reports a master’s degree in the field can be sufficient for some roles.”

If you want to become a social worker you are going to spend a long, long time going to school. “A master's degree in social work is the minimum educational requirement for employment in supervisory, clinical, and specialty practice. Depending on whether attendance is full-time or part-time, it takes two to four years of graduate-level studies to earn a master's degree in social work (MSW)”

Children of several of my friends and family have entered college and pursued degrees in social work and speech pathology. Once they obtain their undergraduate degrees, they must continue on for a Masters degree if they want actual employment in their field, causing them to continue to pile on debt and/or drain their parents’ savings.

This is all a racket and a scam that mainly preys on young women and enriches the universities. In fact, every single person I’ve know that has followed these 6 or 7 year degree plans is female. I am not disputing that these are legitimate academic fields and respectable careers (although the radical left’s takeover of their accrediting agencies has certainly tarnished their image in my eyes) but there is no reason that it takes 6 or more years of schooling to become a social worker. If architects and RNs can practice with a bachelor’s degree or less, so can a speech pathologist.

I told her there is no way she will need to pay for any post-grad her employer will pay. as was the case with all the other engineers in our family!

"Psychic Colonization." Good grief.

I assume - though I do not know and I can't be bothered to look it up right now - that this is the new framework for what used to be "internalized misogyny" or "internalized white supremacy." It would be a useful linguistic tweak if so, because it makes the person involved non-culpable. It isn't that she internalized the patriarchy, it's that the patriarchy psychically colonized her. It removes even more agency - something that the progs *always* do. For all they bleat about agency, nobody has any in their ideology. They are all just objects acted upon by social constructs.

31 I am not disputing that these are legitimate academic fields

I am, with the possible exception of speech pathology, done properly. If the corpus of your "field's" work is subject to political trends, it's not an academic discipline. Furthermore, the notion that "fields" like social work require a college diploma AND grad school is nonsense on stilts. It's simply an attempt to put a high status gloss on what is, at it's core, not a discipline, but a low status art, much like most teachers.

34 My guess:

The number of conservatives who see a therapist is quite low compared to liberals.

The liberals going to therapy probably do so because they feel guilty that they may actually hold a conservative viewpoint (e.g., not thinking we should mutilate kids).

Therapists assume its their job to fix these people so that they can become good libs like the presumed therapist.

63 This just goes to show that most of what passes for modern "therapy" is bullshit, and has been bullshit for years.

There are a lot of time-tested methods for creating communities who are able to support their members who are having a rough time with the normal sorts of ups and downs normal people have, and to reinforce positive behaviors. This is something I had to explain years ago to the spouse - who was, I'll be honest, a recovering stark raving moonbat - in how I was not a social conservative, but understood the value of functional cultural practices even if I dismissed the facial reasons for them.

Similarly, all this crying about "oh, you have to be nice to these freaks so they feel 'valid' and can 'live authentically" - ah, bullshit. Being dicks to them so they keep it to themselves is what keeps the really pathological ones in check. It's how EVERY functional society since the dawn of time has dealt with such things. We don't ask people to be 'normal' - we ask them to pretend to be normal enough in public to keep a lid on a bunch of degenerate shit. Raising the next generation of functioning young adults is more important than pandering to weirdos.

Very few people in any of these social work fields is anything but a leftwing nut. I'd love to see the 6 or 7 year curriculum for a speech pathologist. I'll bet it's 20% actual speech pathology and 80% toxic leftwing diarrhea.

Dr. Aruna Khilanani — who also revealed in her talk at Yale’s Child Study Center April 6 that white people “make my blood boil” and “are out of their minds and have been for a long time” — joined Hill on the fledgling Black News Channel’s prime-time program “Black News Tonight” to discuss her shocking statements. . .
Thursday’s comments seemed to be an extension of other remarks Khilanani made in her Yale lecture, which was titled “The Psychopathic Problem of the White Mind.”

“We keep forgetting that directly talking about race [with white people] is a waste of our breath,” Khilanani said at the time. “We are asking a demented, violent predator who thinks that they are a saint or a superhero to accept responsibility. It ain’t gonna happen. They have five holes in their brain. It’s like banging your head against a brick wall.”

This feeds into my ongoing question of the difference between culture on the ground and culture as projected from institutions.

Is it our culture to mutilate children based on feather light whims? Our cultural institutions certainly seem ready to make it that way, but how is it playing out on the ground floor of the culture? Sure, there are those that rush into it, but are they small pockets of exceptions that should define the larger culture just because they align with the institutions?

126 Good rant.

The speech pathologist and psychologist might be under unions, i.e., teachers, NEA, federal, and fund their further education through & by the government. Any and all could work for non-profits including certain hospitals. It's all so overly complicated now; circular job, pension & educational funding.

The federal government pulled the same thing for employment years ago. Everyone was supposed to have "initials" behind name & job title. (Mine, NFI.) It's waned, some because of DIE, some because it could get no asses in the seats to do actual work. I

Well Kinsey, that freak, bears a lot of blame. But at the end of the day, a lack of humility, Ironically, is the root of the problem. It used to be that the mental health professionals helped disturbed people learn how to cope with reality. Now they tell disturbed people that reality must be changed to suit their dysfunction. In lay terms, they now enable, rather than try to correct. Because, to correct, you have to apply judgment naming right from wrong, real from false. There's not much money in that. Its also icky and confrontational.

152 Buck, there is another field which has succumbed to "you must have the highest degree possible even though it will not improve your practice".
Nurse practitioners (NP) get a masters and work in their field. 10 years ago the PTB decided all NPs must get a Doctorate. The 'D' was acknowledged to have no impact on the NPs practice; but, because Pharmacists were all getting at least the D the Nursing Boards decided to shove this onto the NPs.
I wanted to get an NP; but, when I was about to apply for the Masters program they added a piece of paper that said "I will continue in school, while practicing with my Masters as an NP, to attain a Doctorate" (paraphrased).
I had no intention of getting a D and I don't sign papers while lying to myself or others so I remained a BSN until retirement.

Like I said, in Heritage America there was a point where it could be allowed to a point and then be dealt with properly by adults, but instead they have created environments where all the same conditions exist and they've washed their hands of any and all responsibility because the bully has the most power in the schools.

The kids being bullied cry out for help over and over and over, and the teachers ignore them because the schools have implemented a zero tolerance approach to bullying that essentially pretends it doesn't exist, and then the poor bastards figure out a way to solve the problem the only way their underdeveloped minds can come up with.

But at least the teachers got an "exceeds expectations" raises for a few years because they didn't have any major discipline issues and didn't have to have a parent-teacher conferences with the bullys parents.

164 This repeated usage completely inverts who is out of the mainstream. It accepts by definition that normal church-going conservatives who won’t muzzle their beliefs are “unorthodox,” while the left-wing radicals he is trying to persuade to be more tolerant are not labeled at all.

This is what happens when a country shifts from center-right to far left of center. And that is what has occurred. Folks, you're going to have to assume now that you're in the minority. Act accordingly. Think accordingly.

I do find it ironic, this sudden interest from the Right into Classical Liberalism. Because the entire appeal of Classical Liberalism is the idea that you can be vocal, in the minority, yet still not swing from a lamp-post.

Yet it's too much interest too late. Once you're actually considering the possibility of an uninvited ride off a bridge or roof ? Then Classical Liberalism is not a winning philosophy for you.

During the divorce, my brother got my Mother to go to a "therapist" as proof of abuse. It was all bullshit. Therapist wrote letter for court that said Mom was afraid of Dad and all the kids except the perjurer who was helping her. But in all fairness, these girls never learned how to deal with even routine disappointment or depression. They have been coddled and feted their entire lives. So when the usual disappointments of life show up -- don't get a job you want, get fired from a job, you go through a bad break-up, your friend turns out to be a toxic little backstabbing bitch, etc -- they have no idea how to deal with them. None. So they run to "therapists."

People are meant to acquire a little scar tissue in life. Imagine if your immune system never encountered a pathogen. It would attack healthy tissue or over react to minor things and you get autoimmune disorders flaring up.

Psychology works the same way. You need to be exposed to negativity. People who live with no pushback or boundaries treat the first person who points out that maybe a penis is not a birth defect like an axe murderer. Screaming, terror, demands for safety over the most minimal things.

We are seeing Societal Autoimmune reactions because the kids' egos have been bubble wrapped into adulthood.

249 225 A critical mass of The Left is culturally exploding away from the Center at the speed of light. Any ideas or positions not in absolute lockstep with the everchanging instant-by-instant "orthodoxy" will get red-shifted to the Extreme Unorthodox Right, even if that position was a mainstream Left one even just a couple years ago. It's only going to get worse from here.

250 I'd love to believe that the answer to all of this lies in having strong parents but I'm not so sure. My parents were the straightest of shooters who just told me what was what and called BS when they saw it.

I was the type of kid who responded to that. I always had an innate sense of self so never really followed crowds and such.

But, my teachers and friends never showed any vested interest in changing me. That's not the case today. I try to parent much like mine did but it's a different world now.

While I felt I wasn't indoctrinating my kids, all media (and most of society) actively was. Unfortunately, I'm now of the opinion that, if you have kids, you and your spouse need to actively feel like you're brainwashing your kid to keep them normal. But the courses also covered more reference and bibliographical sources than I'd ever run across in the libraries I'd used in the years prior to chasing the degree. But was there so much to cover that a master's was required? Probably not. Most of what was covered was the sort of thing that could be learned on the job, and I doubt library science is the only graduate field where that's true.

These days, with libraries trying to be everything to everybody, I wouldn't be a good fit for the job and wouldn't dream of going into it now. The writing was on the wall when you started seeing librarians saying that the library was more than "just books."

It sends a message. They have to control their own as much as they have to control us. Anyone who does not tow the party line is an enemy. They will cull the unpure, no matter which party they claim to support.

377 So now I presume that an orthodox Jew or a observant member of the Eastern Orthodox Church would be considered to be unorthodox. Am I right?

378 30 years ago, A friend of mine was having romantic difficulty with a man. Her therapist, a new yorker, hopefully suggested that she might consider being a lesbian. They've been crazy for a long time.

379 Quick context:
The "orthodox" National Association of Social Workers has about 120,000 members. That's bigger than the Church of the Brethren, but smaller than Christian Congregation, Inc.

There are 50-70 MILLION Catholics and around 25 MILLION Baptists in the US.

Even the Scientologists outnumber them by 30-1.

"Orthodox," indeed.

381 This is what happens when a country shifts from center-right to far left of center. And that is what has occurred. Folks, you're going to have to assume now that you're in the minority. Act accordingly. Think accordingly.

But that's the bitch, isn't it? We aren't actually in the minority. Not by a long shot. A small percentage of very noisy radical tail in this country is trying to wag the dog.

382 I think physical therapy is another accreditation racket. Most well-trained personal trainers with experience are just as helpful and effective with orthopedic issues and recovery exercise from surgery or injury. My course of PT was over $3000. My work with a personal trainer and a good massage therapist cost me less than $500 and did the job just fine. The whole notion that you need a friggen doctorate to give people a couple of dumb bell workouts or put them on a stationary bike for 20 minutes is outrageous. And if you feel you must get "expert" advice from a PT, go to YouTube - there's a zillion of them on there.

I don't even understand what this mean -- except that this thinking very quickly leads to genocide.
--------
Is it really genocide when the people killed are psycho(therapist)s? I mean, they're not a distinct racial or ethnic group...

386 I'm making $90 an hour working from home. I never imagined that it was honest to goodness yet my closest companion is earning sixteen thousand US dollars a month by working on the connection, that was truly astounding for me, she prescribed for me to attempt it simply. Everybody must try this job now by just using this website... www.Payathome7.com

388 I'm a conservative mental health clinician, in a rural area. There are a lot of us in more rural areas who are not leftists (and maybe even some in suburban/urban areas), but we face extraordinary pressures. We have to be careful and keep our heads down. If they "spot you", they will go for your license to practice.

389 Somebody probably already said this, and jut spitballing here, but " "unorthodox” opinion—maybe a conservative political bent, a literal belief in the Bible or support for free speech even when it’s offensive. This includes centrists, moderates, libertarians, and many liberals, as well as people who are simply open-minded." might just maybe lead to more stable psychological outcomes, maybe?
