Rodin Eve Small.jpg

Eve (After the Fall)
Auguste Rodin

Sculpture is a hard medium to write about because its three-dimensionality translates poorly into flat pictures on a two-dimensional screen or in a book. You need to walk around sculpture to appreciate its contours and forms, and how it occupies the space. This work by August Rodin is doubly hard because it is a cast of a work that was intended to be smaller and attached to another. It’s meaning changed slightly with the new context. However, I think it has power as a stand-alone piece which is a testament to Rodin’s genius.

Eve was one of many figures created for the massive, unfinished Gates of Hell. Some others are The Thinker and The Kiss. I decided to write about this piece because I have experienced this piece in person. This version is in my hometown art gallery. I took these pictures [the one below. CBD] when I visited a few weeks ago and wanted to share my experience with the Horde. My impressions and observations in this essay are based solely on this specific cast.

Eve is life-sized. Because of this, I’m able to gaze into her face and study the details of her form closely (receiving a stern warning from security). This work depicts an ashamed and frightened Eve being kicked out of Eden. Her form twists and turns as she folds in on herself. Her limbs fold over her body to try to hide her nudity. Her left arm rises in a defensive gesture to shield her expressive face from the wrath of God. Eve seems like a three-dimensional recreation of Michelangelo’s Eve from the Sistine Chapel scene Expulsion from Paradise. The pose and face are almost identical.

Rodin Eve1.jpg

The spiral twist of her form is so dramatic. She’s coiled tightly like a spring and I can feel its tension. Notice that the texture of the bronze surface is rough and unfinished. To me it feels impressionistic. Rodin seems to have molded the clay quickly. It gives the work a desperate immediacy. Everything seems to have happened in Eden so fast. Adam and Eve ate, fell, and were driven away. The drama of the act and its consequences seem imprinted onto the metal surface.

For me, the scale of this work matters. If she were smaller as intended, I think the details in her pose and her face would be lost or overlooked. If she were larger, her drama would be removed and abstracted. Life-sized she becomes real. I can see her fear-filled face clearly. Her emotion radiates. I walked around her and saw how her contours shifted from every angle. The gallery’s lighting keeps her face in shadow, and I think it mimics how she is now removed from God’s presence. She looks straight down, not forward to watch where she is going and appears to have a slight lean to the left. To me, she looks close to stumbling as she runs. Eve flees in panic. It’s so tragic and so emotional. It’s beautiful.

50 This is wonderful! I was lucky to see a large Rodin exhibit decades ago and the memory is still bright. His ability to create emotion with the poses and gestures of his figures is hard to describe. Especially since he isn't using finely finished forms like the Pieta or many classic sculptures. The rougher surfaces of this and other Rodin pieces require the viewer to see into the image to absorb the full emotional content.

Thanks to Kris for the excellent description and analysis.

59 My best friend's step father was an artist. Their back yard was a hodgepodge of metal works, made with discarded pieces of rebar, sheet metal and whatnot. Modern stuff, but somehow a bit.... weird. He told me once that metal was a very unforgiving medium to work with.

My father called the backyard sculpture garden a 'junkyard.'

However, he also painted and I have one. I rather nice landscape of several trees.

92 CBD, thank you for the commentary. You articulated in a few words some of ideas that were whipping around in my head. I also got a chuckle of you being admonished for your enthusiasm while viewing Eve. A few years ago at a fantastic Edward Hopper show in Minneapolis I received a similar but lessor caution. I think this proves, with great clarity, the moment you put a badge on somebody they instantly transform into a North Korean prison guard. Well, maybe that is a little strong. Nah.

105 Hunter Biden’s ‘laptop’ looks more and more like a politically motivated criminal scheme. During the 2016 elections, Russian government agents hacked into the DNC and Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, dumping stolen data to sabotage Donald Trump’s election opponent. The more we learn about the supposed “Hunter Biden laptop,” a scandal meant to roil the campaign of Donald Trump’s election opponent four years later, the more it looks like somebody was following the same hack-and-dump playbook.

The Hunter laptop case is an uncannily similar series of events. Hunter's email, iCloud, Venmo, and other accounts were breached in 2018 and 2019. His data was copied, spyware was installed, and cursory attempts to cover it up were made.

And then a laptop with a copy of that data (with clear evidence of data tampering) gets dumped at a repair shop, never to be picked up, while its data somehow makes it to Giuliani.

We knew what the "laptop" revealed: Hunter Biden suffered through addiction, spent substantial cash on drugs and sex workers, and muddled through his troubled life slightly better than most addicts due to perceived closeness to his father.

That was one of the pieces I saw at the exhibit. The poses of the figures, their very individual expressions, and the emotional weight of their situation has a huge impact. I also saw Fallen "Caryatid Carrying Her Stone" which opened my eyes to the power of sculpture beyond just pretty forms. (The other sculpture that had that effect was The Pieta.)

Believe it or not, I was introduced to Rodin's work from Heinlein's "Stranger In A Strange Land" back in the mid-60s. Whatever you think of the book, Jubal Harshaw's comments about the value of Rodin works began a lifelong interest in his art and an appreciation of art in general.

I just finished Stone's "the Agony and the Ecstasy" and had a similar reaction about the art. I already liked Michelangelo but the way the art is described is like describing the love of your life. If you like art or specifically Renaissance art, I cannot recommend that book enough. And it's really easy to read -- just long.

My 2015 BMW 3 Series didn't have a spare either, not even the donut. The trunk on that is not very big anyway, and then the battery is back there too. I was planning to get a spare. Then the July rainstorm flood totaled the car.

The Buick has its battery up front where David D. Buick intended it to be, and a space-saver spare under the trunk floor. In fact I've had to use it once in the four years I've had the car.

260 I believe in cars that don't come with spare tires, you can buy & carry around a "tire repair kit" that works like the old bicycle tire repair kits we had as kids.

Forgot to include: I think you probably get a can of compressed air or something. But the new ones supposedly have concierge towing service as well.

Bikes used patches. Tires (Tubeless) use plugs.

But yes. Carry 2 Patch Kits and a portable compressor (cigarette lighter powered).

Pretty much, but the larger, cultural effect would be that everyone would acknowledge that there were massive irregularities with the election that led to an implausible result.

Throw in the fact that downballot races tend to not get stolen in these situations, and you've got the making for a popular revolt manifesting through state-level action on voting.

Of course, I was hoping for the same thing in 2022, and here we are with PA's Democrat Party having just entrenched power in the state capitol.

To be fair, the BMW 3 Series came with run-flat Continental tires, so in theory I could keep driving to a repair center. Oddly, though run-flats (RFTs) are supposed to be hard-riding, these were not. And I checked; they had the RFT code on them. The little sedan would probably have ridden even more smoothly with regular Continentals like I have on the Buick.

Asian Americans don’t experience racism as severely or in the same ways as other People of Color in America, one more unique aspect of racism directed at us is our perceived “alienness.” By alienness, I mean the idea that Asian Americans are permanent outsiders to “real America” (TM) as Donald might put it.

One memorable example would be Rosie O’Donnell’s comments on The View in 2006 when she repeatedly described Chinese Americans talking about Danny DeVito as “ching-chong, ching-chong” in describing their Chinese accents.

341 Bandersnatch, would you live eternally knowing sin?
You asked: The Adam and Eve story put me right off the bible. (And it's basically the beginning). Why would God forbid them knowledge of good and evil?
We grow cold to the injustice of the world, grump against the damage of hurt, growl over the pain of regret in a few short decades. To persist for eternity, accumulating the ravages of sin, is the very definition of hell is it not? God removed them from the hell they deserved. That was Mercy.

342 I'm making $90 an hour working from home.
