Barry Diller: Hollywood Faces an "Absolute Collapse" If Actor and Writer Strikes Are Not Resolved Soon

Via Ken Gardner who adds:

yourtermsareacceptable.jpg

The former head of Paramount sees nothing but bad signs for Hollywood.

Former Paramount CEO Barry Diller delivered a grim prediction for Hollywood on Sunday, warning that the industry is facing an "absolute collapse" if the Writers' and Screen Actors Guild joint strike extends into the fall.

"What will happen is, if in fact, it doesn't get settled until Christmas or so, then next year, there's not going to be many programs for anybody to watch. So, you're gonna see subscriptions get pulled, which is going to reduce the revenue of all these movie companies, television companies, the result of which is that there will be no programs," Diller said on CBS' "Face the Nation" Sunday. "And at just the time, [the] strike is settled that you want to get back up, there won't be enough money."

...

Diller said Hollywood is in the throes of a "perfect storm," adding that he doesn't think there is enough "trust" between the parties to reach a resolution soon.
Writer Eric Heisserer holds his writers strike sign on the fourth day of the writers strike in front of Netflix in Hollywood, followed by many other individuals

"The problem is... all strikes get settled. The issue with this one is because...you had COVID, which sent people home to watch streaming television and killed theaters. You've had the results of huge investments in streaming which have produced all these losses for all these companies that are now kind of retrenching. So at this moment, this kind of perfect storm, it's okay if it gets settled in the next month but... what happens if it doesn't? And there doesn't seem enough trust and energy to get it settled soon."

The IAC chairman said he believes a settlement deadline of September 1 should be agreed upon by studios, streaming services and union leaders representing film and television actors to prevent "devastating" effects on the entertainment industry.

"I think there should be a settlement deadline because... this actually will have devastating effects if it is not settled soon," he said, adding that while the public might seem disinterested in internal Hollywood chaos, the truth is, "this is a huge business, both domestically and for world exporters."

"It sounds like I'm crying to the skies," he added, "but these conditions will potentially produce an absolute collapse of an entire industry."

In semi-related news: Bob Iger says that Disney might be forced to sell off the ABC television network, the FX and FXX networks, and all "non-linear" networks... and wants someone to come in as a coinvestor to share the losses from the dying ESPN.

Walt Disney Company boss Bob Iger said the company is considering selling its TV assets while seeking a strategic partner for sports cable property ESPN.

Iger told CNBC on Thursday that he has had discussions with potential investors about buying a minority stake in ESPN, though he would not specify.

Iger said he hopes a partner would assist Disney with its sports-related "distribution or content," adding that the company "wants to stay in the sports business."

Iger added that he would be open to selling or spinning off Disney's cable networks, which includes ABC, FX and National Geographic.

Iger, who revealed on Wednesday he will remain CEO of Disney through 2026, told CNBC he did not anticipate the degree to which legacy television networks would be struggling.

Disney's television properties "may not be core" to the company, Iger said.

Note the properties he's considering selling are, mostly, companies that were purchased by Disney before Iger. FX and FXX were acquired by Iger when he bought Fox's entertainment divisions. But neither of those, I think, has ever been sold as standalone units and so do not have any valuations attached to them.

I point this out because of either Valliant Renegade's or WDW_Pro's point (forget which) that Iger does not want to sell off the big properties he bought -- LucasFilm, Marvel, Pixar, and even Fox, as a whole -- because the selling price will be much, much lower than the purchase price. This would expose him as rube who consistently overpaid for other people' successful studios to cover-up Disney's own struggling creative output. And it would also confirm everyone's strong suspicion that all of these properties are worth only 25-50% of what was paid for them, and therefore maybe all of Disney is similarly only worth 25-50% of the current market valuation.

He can't afford to sell anything that people know a recent purchase price for. He can only sell things acquired long ago (ABC) or which have never been sold on their own as standalone units (FX, FXX).

But he will never sell anything that he over-paid for. He cannot afford to let the world know, in stark mathematical terms, just how poorly he's run Disney these past eight years.

By the way, the last weekend's box office had Mission Impossible at number one and Sound of Freedom at number two. Phloebiana Jones fell to fourth. What a disgrace.

The Sound of Freedom has made $85 million in two weeks of release.

I suspect they are going to solve the strike issues very quickly. We are already into prime script writing time for the new fall season and that is their bread and butter and they don't want to mess with that sacred cow.

I will disagree with the "overpaying" part of that.

I think Lucasfilm could easily have been worth the money. But they put a talentless hack in charge that threw out already existing content that could have easily been mined for multiple movies/series.

Also, he's not a fool. What cost, TO HIM, has there been from his massive mismanagement? Sure, the company is hurting, but he's doing very well AND pushing THE MESSAGE he believes in. I'd say he's a huge success.

78 The writers had to con SAG into getting involved, or else this would simply be the writers demanding to be replaced with AI that'd do a significantly better job for a fraction of the cost.

Give it a few years and the actors will also be expendable.

If you want a REALLY weird rabbit hole to go down: look into how many professional script writers, especially for television, have total aphantasia (an inability to internally visualize things - in other words, they have no "mind's eye"). It's partly why so many half-assed plots sound like someone was stringing together sound byte plot legos - because they literally were.

When you're done being creeped out/wasting time with that, go look up estimates on what % of the population lacks internal monologue and then think about the philosophical implications of combining that condition with an inability to visualize. After which you will probably drink heavily. You're welcome.

If the assets on their balance sheet are worth about 50% of what they're carrying them at, then the equity is about worthless.

But actually valuing something like Disney is kind of difficult. The real estate is easier to figure, the theme parks a bit harder, but the IP stuff is ambiguous.

91 Ace says:
This would expose him as rube who consistently overpaid for other people' successful studios to cover-up Disney's own struggling creative output. And it would also confirm everyone's strong suspicion that all of these properties are worth only 25-50% of what was paid for them, and therefore maybe all of Disney is similarly only worth 25-50% of the current market valuation.

----------------------

I'd analyze it in a more punishing way. Disney probably bought them at a fairly reasonable price, then itself mismanaged and destroyed them so that their value is now, optimistically 25 percent of what it was.

This mismanagement and poor customer relations will poison anything they make or acquire or sell going forward, so their value should be far, far less. You can't put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

110 Changes to a popular 401(K) tax deduction are set to hit millions of high-earning Americans from next year. Workers over the aged of 50 are entitled to make catch-up contributions to their 401(K)s worth up to $7,500 this year. The annual cap on all contributions is $30,000. But from 2024, those earning over $145,000 will no longer be able to put these catch-up payments into a traditional 401(K). Instead, the money will be only funneled into a Roth IRA account, according to new rules passed through Congress in December. This means they lose the tax deferral, and must pay taxes before putting the money into their retirement accounts.

Whether it's the Boy Scouts or California or Disney or comics, it has been a story of parasitic takeover of conservative ideals, leading to thorough destruction. I can't think of a single instance -- CHAZ, BLM, Ben & Jerry's -- that started as leftist dreams, got off the ground, and if initially successful, gained MORE success by going harder with the overt leftism.

In the late silent era, Abel Gance made a 4 hour Napoleon epic that covered from his childhood to...Toulon.

His original idea was to make a new film every few years with the same actor and cover another section of Napoleon's life. He never got funding for a second part.

But that first part is one of those wild, fun, and incredibly amusing silent epics. The finale goes all triptych with three screens arranged side by side.

327 Actors say Hollywood studios want their AI replicas -- for free, forever. And I just learned of a publisher wanting a very famous author to agree to have AI trained on their writing, and it's a sticking point in negotiations.

A friend of mine is an Emmy Award winning hair stylist. He and his husband (also an Emmy Award winning hair stylist) have been out of work since the writer's strike in April.

There's a movie called CAM about a woman who performs for an OnlyFans/Chaturbate type of site who has her likeness stolen and used in performances of more and more extreme acts that she would never have performed herself.

Time to boycott Big Media! It's time to cut back on Cinema, and pay TV. That is the only way this gets fixed quickly.

Good, replace them with robots, CGI assisted AI and Chinese sexbots, time for the future. Anything but more 85 y/o leading men and same old tired cookie cutter scripts. Buh bye Indy

CGI already ages poorly often enough. AI "actors" will also age poorly. Whatever technology they use now will look like shit even in a decade.

360 Can y'all actually see pictures in your head when you're trying to imagine things?

I know this is wierd for an illustrator and writer, but I don't usually visualize things either, I conceptualize them. I figure out what they mean and how they work and how they interact, then I put that down into an image or a description. Somewhere along the way I translate the concept into image.

So if someone says "apple" I don't pop a picture of an apple up in my head, I pop the flavor, shape, how it grows on a tree, different stages of development, that way a leaf can leave a shadow on the fruit that doesn't develop color, how it has a pit, etc.

One of the ideas Hollywood has had for a while is...

Men like action movies, men like looking at good looking women.

So if we make an action movie with a scantily clad hot actress we can get all the men to watch it AND sell it as girl power to their wives/girlfriends.

The problem is all those movies generally suck lock at Tomb Raider as a prime example.

The most interesting remakes to me are the ones that completely change cultures, like from Infernal Affairs to The Departed.

Infernal Affairs is very intimately tied to Hong Kong, but The Departed lives and breathes Boston. It gives it a flavor that's distinct from the original while retaining the general plot mechanics.

When people describe things in tactile terms, or scent, or sound, I sense those things internally.

When I recall events, they replay in my head. Often the soundtrack is more clear than the video-- I guess audio files take up less ram.

This is one of those things I just assumed everyone else did. Am I the strange one?

He started out being subordinate enough to his government, since the Revolution gave him huge opportunities that the old regime never would have given a provincial with no family. Since he was extremely intelligent he was able to leverage chance into actions and armies that turned France from threatened by its neighbors to dominating and conquering them.

As he rose higher in ranks, he began to have to get into Politics more and more and since he was so smart and driven he decided to 'fix' the problems by taking the job over too.

Let's make "Uncle Tom's Cabin", except the slave is white women, barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen. And "massa" sells her off to a Christian. He takes her clothes and forbids her from teaching Islam to the other workers.

457 Can y'all actually see pictures in your head when you're trying to imagine things? I don't see anything. If I tell myself to imagine an apple, I can kind of *feel* the round, organic lines, but I don't see a thing in my head.

Younger son does that too. Me, my brain is very visual, and if I am reading something well-written, I am no longer reading, in a sense, but seeing the visual. I discovered this the first time I read Lord of the Rings. First books I read that were not assigned as a book report in school.

458 Disney theme parks no longer have long wait lines.

The Star Wars star cruiser, after a $1 investment, has closed after a year.

Indy 5 needs about $700 million to break even. Little Mermaid tanked. So did the Pixar movie.

Bob Iger is Captain Smith and Disney is RMS Titanic with four watertight compartments flooded.

459 I'd also do Timur instead of the Mughals.

Its a more consistent storyline, the Mughuls were very screwy

I think starting with his conquests would be the way to start the movie series. Then do the prequel about his growing up.

Probably the more commercially viable way to do it.

My favorite story about Ringo is how a reporter breathlessly asked John Lenin if Ringo was the best drummer in rock and roll.

John looked puzzled and said " 'e's not even the best drummer in the Beatles".

477 When I recall events, they replay in my head. Often the soundtrack is more clear than the video-- I guess audio files take up less ram.

Posted by: Formerly Virginian at July 17, 2023 04:47 PM (N1DT3)

No idea if its strange but it's not at all how i do them. Certainly the description of a smell doesn't activate my nose and duplicate it for me.

There's an interesting SF story i read about a mind-viewer where you could see the world and both characters were repelled at how the other saw it - the woman's view was earthy, meaty, crawling with life and motion and repelled him, while his world was disgustingly flat and plain and colorless compared to her.

484 And don't forget.

DISNEY OWNED SOUND OF FREEDOM AND REFUSED TO RELEASE IT.

Fox filmed it, and it was literally sitting on Disney's shelf gathering dust, until Angel crowdfunded enough to buy it from them and release it.

There was ZERO actual financial reason for Disney not to just release it. Fox had already made the movie. Sure you could argue that analysts claimed it wouldn't make much, but so what? It was already ready to go with zero investment. The ONLY reason not to release it and grab up a few million dollars was politics.

Angel has made tens of millions on that investment, while Disney looks like the woke political morons they are.
