The Morning Report — 7/17/23

doucheypencestupid.jpg

Good morning, kids. I guess I could just do a riff on the infamous New York Daily News headline from October 1975, which many see as an unfair attack that sank incumbent President Gerald Ford's reelection campaign even before it started, with something that IMHO is more accurate:

PENCE TO AMERICA: "DROP DEAD"

Replying to Tucker Carlson's retort about the nation and in particular its cities going to hell in a hand basket while Pence and others of the Uniparty shove billions in money and weapons at Ukraine, and touching off a war with Russia that potentially could go global, Pence then publicly took his head and shoved it up past his sigmoid:

It’s probably easier to start with the loser, chief among whom was Mike Pence, who might just as well have used the occasion to perform an act of self-immolation. The key moment came in an exchange about foreign policy, in particular U.S. policy with respect to the war in Ukraine. Pence said he was distressed that we had yet to send Ukraine the promised Abrams tanks or train Ukrainian pilots to fly F16s.

“You are distressed,” said Tucker, “that the Ukrainians don’t have enough American tanks. Every city in the United States has become much worse in the last three years. . . .and yet your concern is that the Ukrainians . . . don’t have enough tanks? Where’s the concern in the United States in that?”

“Well, that’s not my concern. Tucker, I’ve heard that routine from you before, but that’s not my concern.”

“Not my concern.”

Bang. “Not my concern.”

The internet lit up over that one, with some people saying that Pence had just committed suicide and others wondering what he was saying. To what did “that’s not my concern” apply?

Mollie Hemingway was probably correct that Pence was flummoxed and that it is “fair to say he intended to say something about how we can fight forever wars with unclear ties to national interest at the same time we begin to fight American decline.” Unfortunately for Pence, as Hemingway went on to observe, “many GOP voters would say he’s wrong on that as well.”

In fairness to Pence, whom I detest, I too could care fuck-all for America's cities. The voters and the maniacs they perpetually put in office are responsible for their own destruction. Pence in a way is right, but for all the wrong reasons, and his tone and the way he came off were horrible.

Roger Kimball has a pretty good analysis on the event, of which President Trump was notably absent. You'll note that he is all in for OrangeManBad. Rajan Laad over at American Thinker cuts to the chase:

There are many who claimed that Pence's awkward performance ended his presidential chances.

Well, they are wrong because to end his chances, he would have to have some chances in the first place.

Unless he is delusional, which is most likely not the case, Pence knows that he had no chance of winning the nomination.  He knows that his conduct on January 6 and his remarks after that attacking Trump had disgusted the GOP voters who participate in the primaries.

So what was he doing there?

Clearly, Pence was auditioning for a lucrative position in one of the "conservative" groups, such as the Lincoln Project, or maybe the kind that he supported by National Review, which longs for the return of the Bush era.  He could also find a position on Fox News or perhaps even a liberal media outlet where he can be a useful idiot.

When President Trump wins in 2024, one of the biggest challenges is to keep away cunning pretenders such as Pence and Barr. This isn't going to be easy because there are many wolves in sheepskin, while others merely capitulate under D.C. pressure.

Personally I think Trump should have attended. I think his calculus is that he should be anointed and perhaps going to these events diminishes his stature somehow. Also, while Tucker Carlson is not going to pull the "Have you stopped beating your wife?" bullshit questions, he will obviously not pull punches even in a one-on-one with PDT. And Trump does have a lot to answer for. In fact, Pence's Ukraine crap is one thing, but what the hell is this?

“I know Zelensky very well, and I know Putin very well, even better. And I had a good relationship, very good, with both of them. I would tell Zelensky, no more. You got to make a deal. I would tell Putin, if you don’t make a deal, we’re going to give him a lot. We’re going to them more than they ever got if we have to. I will have the deal done in one day. One day.”

Trump’s remarks generated strong responses online from a wide range of commentators, including some who noted that the former president skipped going to Tucker Carlson’s forum in Iowa last week where Carlson scrutinized candidates in-large part over their views on Ukraine.

Republican strategist Ryan James Girdusky tweeted, “This is basically what Biden is doing.

”Claremont Institute fellow David Reaboi said that he was “knocked out” by Trump’s remarks.

“In order to end the war, Trump commits to following the Lindsay Graham and Neocon policy of arming Ukraine to the teeth,” he said. “That’s exactly what’s happening now, and it hasn’t changed Putin’s behavior. Would Trump escalate against Russia beyond that? That’s exactly what Americans don’t want.”

I think Trump is doing his Art-of-the-Deal schtick here, but I am not going to defend it because it comes out sounding totally insane, given the circumstances. As I and others have stated, this is a regional conflict between the world's worst kleptocracy and a former superpower that is now nothing more than a regional power with nuclear weapons. There is zero strategic American interest that is threatened or at stake here. In fact, it was American diplomatic blundering involving at least three prior administrations and the current junta that caused this predicament in the first place. That or something along those lines should've been Trump's response to Money Honey Bartiromo.

That said, Ron DeSantis, the savior many are looking to to ride to the rescue himself has flip-flopped on Ukraine in recent months. In any case, I really do not know why I'm getting all worked up over this. About the only thing that does interest me is the slow emergence of Vivek Ramaswamy, not as the standard bearer for '24, but as a future leader of the movement and/or party, assuming the GOP does not go the way of the dodo (or America for that matter). He's thrown out a lot of red meat of late and has impressed me in that regard. Of course, as Kimball and others have noted, the big winner in Iowa was Tucker Carlson himself:

Carlson is free to ask difficult questions since he is not working for the establishment media. He lost his evening TV show because his populist questions prompted Fox’s establishment board to shut him down, despite the resulting huge loss of viewers.

In fact, Carlson has a pocketbook and a ratings incentive to keep the pressure on politicians. Millions of ordinary Americans have given up on the establishment’s media coverage of the establishment’s political priorities. That popularity was made clear the next day when Carlson spoke at the TPUSA Conference in Florida:

Tucker Carlson takes the stage at the @TPUSA Conference in West Palm Beach, FL to a standing ovation. “I don’t think most unemployed people get a reception like that,” he joked.

At the end of the day, it is going to boil down to Trump versus DeSantis. As of right now, if you can believe the polling, Trump is way out in the lead, and DeSantis' campaign is showing major signs of stalling. But as CBD and I discussed on the latest podcast, does any of this even matter?

The fix is already in place, especially in the key swing states and districts if not most everywhere else so what does American electoral politics even mean anymore? I tried making the point that I believe we are beyond that, or we will soon be when an inevitable financial or other catastrophe (intentionally induced or otherwise) hits us.

We have been so thoroughly corrupted at every level of society that nothing short of a radical change will right the ship. Or sink it, depending on the breaks.

Meanwhile, in far away Fargo, North Dakota, this happened per friend of the blog Robert Spencer:

On Friday afternoon, police in Fargo, North Dakota, responded to a report of a car crash at 9th Avenue South and 25th Street South. Fargo Police Chief David Zibolski said it was a “routine traffic accident,” but what happened when they arrived on the scene was anything but routine. A Fargo resident named Mohamad Barakat, 37, opened fire on the officers, killing one and injuring three others. Zibolski said that Barakat attacked the officers “for no known reason,” and authorities have as yet offered no hints as to the shooter’s motive. One of the most obvious possibilities, however, is being steadfastly ignored, as one might expect given today’s media narrative. . .

. . . Yes, it did. And Zibolski added that the FBI had been called in, but given the fact that the feds are now far more interested in finding “domestic terrorists” at school board meetings and Catholic churches than in hunting down actual terrorists, Zibolski may still not get an answer to his question of why someone would do such a thing. FBI agents today would likely not recognize an Islamic jihadist if he stood behind a car and started shooting at them, but Mohamad Barakat may have been one. There is no indication that anyone is looking into this possibility, but it would provide an immediate explanation for the details of the case. . .

. . . Now, Mohamad Barakat may have had entirely different reasons for his attack. But the possibility that this was a jihad terror attack in Fargo, North Dakota, cannot be dismissed out of hand, even as authorities appear disinclined even to consider it as a possibility. The FBI and the entire Biden regime have never given any indication that they’re aware that the global jihad continues. Unfortunately, it does.

33 The neocons and warmongers have to recalibrate after the Ukraine fiasco, and that's what it is. You can't keep pouring billions of dollars worth of weapons into a place without men to use them - the Ukrainians are running out of bodies and their young men are either being forcibly conscripted or hiding from same. The grift in Afghanistan was possible because highly trained US soldiers are more sustainable and the lower loss rate made replacing them for 20 years easy. If you think this is a dark perspective, it is, we are governed by monsters.

"Not my concern" is the wrong answer regardless of whether he's referring to Ukraine or the breakdown of cities.

As POTUS, it would be his job to untangle us from the Ukraine/Russia quagmire.

As POTUS, he would not be in charge of individual cities breaking down, but he should be concerned of the large scale breakdown of law and order across numerous American cities.

43 Trump's position on getting negotiations between Putin and Zelensky seems reasonable to me.

Zelensky primarily needs to be pressured to alter terms to match the reality on the ground. The "threat" to Putin is practically a non-threat as it reflects maintaining a status quo, which would seem to recognize that the terms previously put forth by Russia are not unreasonable.

Irrelevant. He can say he meant what it sounded like, or he can say that was *not* what he meant and that second-guessing the commitment to Ukraine was not his concern, or he can say something else.

Here's the thing, though: it doesn't matter. Too many people heard what he said and have a seriously bad interpretation of it. Moreover, too many disliked Pence *anyway* because of his behavior from December, 2016 through January, 2017 and so will not be all that willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I wonder if the writer of this statement - which is correct - has taken the logical next step and concluded that the US does not have a free press. It is in the best interests of *any* press outfit that wants wide distribution and consumption of its product to be as hard as possible on politicians, whatever party or position. The press should firmly interrogate the government and politicians at all times and in all things. Only committed partisans should be easy on *anyone* and their reach will necessarily be smaller because the demand is less.

Unless, of course, you don't have a free press and instead have a propaganda complex that's playing dress-up...

94 The "Fast Car" thing is our world in miniature.

The foofaraw is that a white guy covered a song that was originally done by a Black and Lesbian woman and went to the top of the charts for country music.

Young internet-style reporter says, wow, she did not have the ability to do that on the country charts. Because she's not a straight white man. Straight white man stole her song and fame!

Except she had a pretty significant amount of fame on her own with the song. No, not as a country song, because it was not marketed that way. So we have a dumb reporter who is offended for someone else.

Granted, Luke Combs didn't do a LOT to make it a country song, or his in particular. He's got a twang in his singing, and adds a band where the original was just an acoustic guitar. He doesn't even change the lyrics about being a checkout girl. But I suspect this brings new royalties to Chapman - her song has been out of currency for a while.

It's not a country song and back then it *couldn't* have been a country song. The country/pop merger hadn't really happened yet. It was in its infancy (Shania Twain was just starting it, albeit in the other direction) and not just any Tom, Dick or Jane could put out a pop song with a touch of twang and get on the country charts.

And if this is the game they want to play - that a black person can't crossover into country because country people are all racists - they ought to talk to Darius Rucker. He went from a hit alt-rock record to a successful R&B record to three successful country records (and performances at NASCAR races, the CMAs, headlining country music festivals, etc.).

It could be a compelling, tight two hours. First fifteen minutes is retrospective of Rush being unable to fly to space because of the genetic lottery and then going into business. Then the first act is his tribulations with getting into the submersible business, always wanting more but feeling stonewalled by sclerotic competition. The second act is his ballsy expansion and "me against the world" phase with his new sub design and initial construction. The third act is all about the sub, including its test dives and cracking noises and warnings from all corners about how the world is against him for a *reason.* He shifts from starry-eyed dreamer to villain as he ignores all evidence and ignores mistakes. The climax is a dramatization of the last dive and its lethal failure, with the denouement being the conclusions and lessons about the human condition that came out of it.

It could easily be a compelling and fairly politics-free two hour movie that would a great watch. It'll be Hollywood, though, so that won't happen.

It doesn't sound like that will be the angle. This is likely a good thing.

By my read, the angle is that OpenAI (and the other projects) require vast data sets and they get them without explicit consent and sometimes without consent at all. They scrape the information from the web (copyrighted or not) and add it to their gigantic machine learning models without the owners' permission.

Have lunch at Howard's Pub about 20 feet in the air overlooking almost the entire island. Drive back to ferry. Take a short nap on the maybe half hour trip back to Hatteras. In reference to your observation on the G.O.P. nominee for 2024, it probably doesn't matter due to the fix, except in one respect. Trump supporters like myself want certain things. We want our choice to get his stolen term back and we want those we view as the primary culprits of this steal, the Republican Party, to pay dearly for their complicity. So in our calculus there are two (and only two) acceptable outcomes. Either the G.O.P. sheds it's corporatist-donor-globalist control at all levels and gets 100% behind the people's choice in Donald Trump, or they yet again work with the Left to undermine their own candidate in another election and then cease to exist as a major party.
Quite frankly, most of us don't see the first outcome happening and therefore are perfectly fine with the second outcome, if nothing else to bring justice upon that party of Judases by - per the Velos Cohaagen solution - erasing their asses.
Take note, G.O.P., we have no issue ending you. Chew on that you sons of bitches!

Derrick grew up playing football, basketball, and video games. He wasn’t monitored on his electronics use, his mom worked late, and he started watching porn when he was 11. By age 13, he was watching almost two hours every day. He always felt guilty about it, and his traditional Christian-school upbringing, where he was told masturbation was a sin, didn’t help. “Whenever I was bored, I’d just masturbate,” he recalled.

“NoFap” started in 2006, on message boards of Bodybuilding.com, hoping to increase testosterone to improve muscle "gainz"...

Completely agree. However, think of the issues that are first seen, or worst, in cities that are part of the national debate?
-- "gun violence" ->2nd Amendment
-- "sanctuary city" ->immigration
-- "fentanyl crisis" ->border control

Yes, city and state leaders are responsible for them, but to say that what's plaguing big cities is not your concern is to pretend that your federal policy would have no effect on them at all. Fentanyl is very much caused by the open border. Sanctuary city designations by mayors + open border by POTUS is a disaster.
Likewise, Congress and POTUSs are happy to use city issues to push for their preferred policies (see guns above).

Of course the Left freaked out, they are against anything that isn't pedal-to the-metal sexual deviancy. They want young men addicted to porn and onlyfans, etc.. They hate the self-control and discipline it takes to lift, eat well, control your sexual urges because it makes young men NOT feel like victims (and the Left needs people to be victims).

In order to reverse his guilty plea – a process wherein he risks facing a new trial – Chansley would have to convince a judge that he was ineffectively represented by his attorney.

He has already started to change his tune about arguments made by attorney Albert Watkins, who cited Chansely's mental health struggles when he argued for Chansley to receive a lenient sentence, Business Insider previously reported. Watkins also argued Chansley and many other rioters had been deceived by former President Donald Trump.

The defense deep thinkers think no matter how this war turn out it has exposed Russia as a third rate power at low cost. DoD says most of the weapons used are older, stockpiled ones (except all our missiles and automated artillery) and most of the money has gone to US defense contractors. 338 Re: targeted COVID

If you look at websites like Worldmeter, there is a lot of circumstantial evidence that nations with a large demographic of East Asian people seemed to have a remarkable resistance to the pandemic cycles that were devastating other nations in the early stages of the pandemic. I tracked this during the last part of 2020 and beginning of 2021, paying particular attention to China, South Korea, Taiwan, Laos, Vietnam and others. The cases and deaths were astonishingly low compared to other nations of similar populations.

If...and it's still "if," the virus was deliberately engineered, it would make perfect sense to try and program at least some immunity for the Chinese demographic.

I note that later variants of the virus seemed to have lost this "trait," with that same list of East Asian nations getting clobbered after everyone else seemed done with it.

I have no idea why Jews figure into this at all. There are no numbers I ever saw on this. I had to look up "Ashkenazi Jew" to even see what RFK was talking about. It's almost like he dropped Jews into this to poison the entire idea that the virus might have been deliberately designed by China.

341 @211 You might try on some of their "traditional spirituals"
although this one has an unsettling back story:

343 The Economy, Stupid: Keep this in mind, as esteemed JJ Sefton alluded to in his Morning Report monolog.

"I believe we are beyond that, or we will soon be when an inevitable financial or other catastrophe (intentionally induced or otherwise) hits us."

344 For your problem right here

Abdraihman Abdullahi was eating a late lunch at Al Hamdi Restaurant, near 25th Street South and Seventh Avenue, when he heard gunshots.

“Two cars collided and police came and then pow, pow,” he said. “I was super frightened. This wasn’t the first time I’ve heard gunshots. I came from Somalia, but it sure did look like Minneapolis. I’ve never seen this kind of thing in Fargo."

345 @163 We must eliminate the classification system and all music must be distributed equally among the stations.

You have it just backward here. Under the old broadcast rules that predated the FCC, every station had to have a department for, and allot its air time between, subjects and genres. They were treated as newspapers. There was a time of day for country (usually dawn), swing dance orchestras, classical, political commentary. It was the LBJ era that split stations by genre. Creating high-ad revenue "40" stations for Dem donors was the driving force behind establishing NPR to absorb everything else.

347 Based on Trump’s comments on Ukraine, it’s no wonder he pals around with Lindsay Graham. As far as I can tell, there’s no daylight between Trump and McConnell on Ukraine. Military industrial complex is in complete control, including of Trump, as he demonstrated in Afghanistan, with Mattis, with Milley, etc.

Well, when you write that comment without any kind of explanation as to why you think I think that, then you confirm your own suspicions. At least about yourself.

349 Under General Brown, the USAF was unable to pay some Airmen for PCS moves and other expenses. Recruiting is down and so is morale. The Air Force became a hostile workplace under his command and it will spread to all services if he is approved.

350 Of course we should disband NATO, but then how would our gangster government get paid? They had to start this NATO war in Ukraine because the Afghanistan gravy train stopped. If anything is for sure, it’s that the deep state is going to get PAID.

Protecting America and American interests is not the point of the US military anymore. So they don’t care about any of that; they just care about getting paid.

352 In the 1980's the Dems decided to impose a huge tax on boats, reasoning that rich people can afford to pay it.
Those" rich people" started buying cheaper boats from abroad, and my small town boat-making company had to permanently lay off 2/3 of it's workers.

353 Trump's Ukraine tactic is simple: make impossible demands on both parties, then walk back so each party thinks ut is getting a break. It's a simple and effective tactic used by lawyers, negotiators, and salesmen everywhere.

354 What is the evidence that Ukraine is the world's worst kleptocracy?

Note that I am NOT saying that Ukraine isn't the world's worst kleptocracy, just that I want to know what the evidence is.

What is the evidence that Ukraine is more corrupt than Russia or China?

Let's say it's among the top 10. Let's say for argument's sake it isn't a kleptocracy.

It still has zero relevance to our national security interests.

356 Foreign policy is a Fedeal government responsibility.
Even President Trump had a foreign policy.

Cities however, are the responsibility of State and Civic government. Not the concern of the Federal government.

If cities were the concern of the Federal government, then where in the U.S. Constitution does it outline this power?

358 "I know that in many instances he was choosing between liver cancer and pancreatic cancer. If he does win I hope he has learned his lesson to steer clear of anyone from DC, if that is even possible."

Choosing between cancers was by design of the republican party; Bannon readily admits he had to sell his soul to the party to staff up.

Trump got way gooder at the end. Remember, very early in his admin he tried to drain the swamp by firing Comey - boom - nothing but investigations that are still on today, powered by both parties.

361 Quoting a NeverTrump organization? Why not just quote Trump himself instead, J.J.? /smh What he said made sense, but not when edited by DailyWire dweebs.
Now we got "our side" making up quotes (Steve Deuce and others) like the left did "I can see Russia from my house!" "Very fine people!" bullsh!t.
The TDS is pretty disgusting really.
