Note his Surprise Snap at the end. Little puppy goes crazy when owner attempts to retrieve all of his stolen personal items from it. A Canadian man saved a baby moose which was being stalked by a black bear, by giving it shelter in his truck. And his employer fired him for that. A Canadian man claims he was fired from his job at a fuel supplier when he helped rescue a desperate moose calf from a potential black bear attack. Mark Skage, who worked for AFD Petroleum Inc., was driving back from a job site when he saw the abandoned moose wandering on the side of the road in British Columbia on June 6. As he pulled over and hopped out of his vehicle, the calf attempted to climb into his truck as Skage noticed a bear stalking the "few day old" animal. "There was a black bear 50 yards away from her just waiting," Skage said in a Facebook post. "I made a decision at the time after she kept (trying) to climb into the work truck that I couldn't just leave her there. So I stuck her in the passenger side and drove to town to get her some help," Skage added. Skage's decision to bring the calf into his truck comes from his background as an outdoorsman and he knew that doing so was against the law. ... "It is against the law to pick up wild animals off the road or from out in nature, anywhere. It is illegal to be in possession of wildlife and transport wildlife," he told the outlet. ... With the calf riding shotgun in his truck, Skage called his supervisor and the local conservation officer about his predicament before he named the moose Misty and found a rehab center to look after her until she was ready to be released. ![]() ![]() "Instead of reporting the situation to a conservation officer and allowing the authorities to handle the rescue and relocation of the moose, the individual made the independent decision to transport an uninjured moose calf, a wild animal, in the front seat of his company vehicle for many hours," said AFD Petroleum president Dale Reimer, according to CBC. "This not only put the employee and other road users at risk but also potentially caused distress and harm to the moose."Ugh. Terrible. Do whatever the government tells you, never let your own conscience make an allowance for the good! Misty the Moose is being rehabilitated so that she can be released back into the wild. ![]() Canada appears more and more to me to be a cruel, totalitarian Nightmare Place. Part of the nobility of civil disobedience is accepting the consequences of your actions.
The guy broke rules. He availed himself of someone else's property to do something he's expressly forbidden to do with it. He's not a bad guy for doing it, and it wasn't automatically the wrong thing to do, but the consequences are still there even though it all worked out for the moose. But what if things actually did go tango uniform, though? The moose pitches a fit, he swerves into an oncoming car, and two people and a moose get killed over it. Would he still be a hero? Or a Genius Award Winner nutjob who put a wounded wild animal in his car and got someone killed? I don't think it's a clear cut "He's a hero and The Man is a Ass" story. But still a cool story, anyway. Posted by: Warai-otoko at July 21, 2023 08:00 PM (jJx+x) 38

AFD petroleum is a retailer and bulk agent with locations in Alberta, B.C., and Alaska. Head office in Edmonton, Alberta. So Mark, really isn't an "oilpatch guy" at all. To be in the oil patch, your job has to be on the upstream side of the industry, before the product gets to the refinery. Retail people tend to be very risk-averse. I spliced the wire on my trailer today. Bought 2 feet of 7-conductor trailer wire, which was just enough, at 3 bucks a foot! Soldered one end of the new wire into the 6-way plug, and spliced the other end to the (formerly too short) harness on the trailer. I used crimp splices, minus the plastic sleeve, and soldered them up liberally, heat shrunk each individual wire, and heat-shrunk the whole cable. And I managed not to electrocute myself with the soldering iron. (one end of the soldering iron's element has shorted to the shank and tip of the iron; I identified which prong of the plug that was, and spread it so that it only fits the neutral slot on an outlet). No zaps!

The back story: last time I used that soldering iron, it up and quit on me. I took it apart, found a broken connection on the element, and fixed it. Somehow, on putting it back together, one connection grounded out to the shank, and tip. Unknowing, I used it , and got a zap through my left hand, which was holding the roll of solder. OK, the rest of that session, I unplugged the iron before each solder joint. Today, I identified which prong of the plug was shorted to ground, and modified the plug (polarized it, like modern plugs all are) so that it could only be inserted in the outlet such that the shank of the iron was at neutral. Sub-optimal solution, but it works. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at July 21, 2023 09:35 PM (Y+V8V) Posted by: A stand up guy in a cheap suit at July 21, 2023 09:35 PM (9X60i) 243

{233} I would have not fired the guy. ...
Posted by: nurse ratched at July 21, 2023 09:33 PM (dV80I) I ... might have. The company showed video from the surveillance camera of the truck that calls into question a lot of the guy's statements. Further, they stated that this wasn't the only incident they've had with him, and this was apparently "the final straw." Now that they've put statements out there responding to the claim that the firing of this guy was wrong to do, if they've failed to be truthful in a way that hurts his reputation, he could sue them for both defamation of character as well as wrongful termination. If they've told the truth, then this guy may have great difficulty getting hired on by another company as he'll be considered to be "someone who makes poor, emotion-based decisions and doesn't follow policies", ie: A loose cannon and a bad risk. Lastly, they had a wildlife policy, every employee is trained on this, and he flat out violated it with this incident. They seem to be on pretty solid ground for the employment termination.
