President Biden on Thursday authorized the Pentagon to tap up to 3,000 reservists for deployment to Europe to augment U.S. troops there in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve. Biden's order authorizes the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of Homeland Security to send active duty units and individual members who are assigned to a unit of the Selected Reserve or any member of the Individual Ready Reserve. Units deployed are not to exceed more than 3,000 total members at one time, of whom not more than 450 may be members of the Individual Ready Reserve, the order said.No need to worry -- Biden's in charge, baby!

Biden was boarding the presidential airplane in Helsinki, where he met with Nordic leaders following a two-day NATO summit in Lithuania. Since taking office, his mental state has been questioned after a series of gaffes and physical lapses such as trips and falls in public.A week or two ago, we started seeing Biden board Air Force One from a different door, using shorter steps to reach it. This, most assumed, was to avoid him falling up the stairs. It didn't work.

Those 3,000 will survive maybe a week if they have to engage. It will take too long to reinforce them and they're facing a real army. If the US military thinks it is actually going to have to engage with Russia, it should mobilize in earnest and do what it takes to send at least two combat divisions and stage them in Europe. I don't think we should do that - if the assessment is that Ukraine will lose without direct American engagement, then Ukraine should lose. If the military commanders have the same assessment but a different conclusion, however, they should prepare for the inevitability of their course.
Because a small, token gesture like this is will achieve nothing other than piling up American corpses if it goes hot.

What he did is very different than the original loan forgiveness. He took a rule that was already happening and modified how the years are calculated to hit your 20-25 year mark. It is not as dramatic as he is making it out to be, unless there is something hidden in it, which wouldn’t surprise me, of course. But paying your loans for 25 straight years always resulted in whatever balance, if there was one, being wiped. 10 years for certain public service jobs.

Starting the logistics and admin support now for the buildup. Next year its gonna be a thing. It took them a while to build up for Iraq. About a year. They drew down the world supply of lumber because they used it to chock the tanks on the freight cars they used to ship them in to the middle east. Water boils all at once, but it takes a while for the temperature to rise before you start to see the bubbles.

I worry these are mainly going to be the folks that process troops for deployment. A lot of the jobs of military guys running the ports and airports for embarking and debarking troops overseas, are from the Reserves. If this is the case...there will be other deployments soon.

There is a certain logic to it. It takes a while to mobilize if you're go to engage. A lot of people and stuff to move, a lot of weapons to build and deploy. Starting with money and arms to let them do the dying while you sort out the logistics and figure out how to market the war to the domestic population isn't completely irrational.
It's just not a war we should be engaged in.

Oh, I see that you did some time in one of the Army's Infantry Division (Light) formations...
That was one of the Army's stupider Cold War ideas. Take an infantry division, strip it of most vehicles and heavy weapons (you can keep the 105mm howitzers though), and stuff it into 500 cargo aircraft sorties. All to make it "worldwide deployable".
We used to darkly observe that our whole function was to be flown into some hot spot so that we could be slaughtered and become the justification for heavier formations to come in and avenge our deaths 6 months later.

Apparently the Russians have already captured a fair number of American mercs. They considered executing them (and the Euro-mercs they captured) but decided not to.

My rough read is the US is trying to set terms where Russia gets some of its territorial aims, Ukraine eventually joins NATO, and the US calls it a win.

Activating a bunch of separated soldiers will boost numbers and unit readiness reports. It also good that BOTH versions of the NDAA remove the Army's new physical fitness test, which JUST went into effect after years of "testing". I think my last record fitness test was in 2019, and if this new law is passed, it might not be until 2026 before a new test is approved and put out to the force. We aren't physically fit or ready, and can't retain people even with one of the BIGGEST discharge reasons (repeatedly failing physical fitness tests) off the table for years.

Husband and I met in the first Gulf War, in theater. At the time, military brass would come into theater for 24-48 hours, I think, and receive combat pay for a month. They would show up about the same time every month, thus continuing combat pay. This also meant they didn't pay income tax on that pay. NGU can say if this still continues - it was 33 years ago, after all - but that's a nice little compensation package for a couple days work.

We found that out during the recall during Desert Storm we couldn't find a whole bunch of IRR people. Like you said most of them had moved a time or two from the address we had on their release from active duty paperwork.
Some of them called us up asking if they could get recalled and some wound up staying on active duty after they came back from the sand box.

Abraham and Isaac is pointed at contemporary religions in the region. Answering any potential charge that not doing human sacrifices is due to lack of piety. The religion was unusual there for not doing so.

There were two studies done, one in the 80's and another ten years later. Each studied multiple units that deployed to the National Training Center. The study compared their results on the PT test with how well the unit performed at the NTC. (A very tough and realistic training environment.) Not surprisingly, the units with the best PT scores did better at the NTC in each study.
This is something I saw in both Desert Storm and Somalia. Tubby Troopers don't cut it.

I can attest this happened, right up until the Combatant Commanders cracked down on it and started holding people in theater for a week or two instead of letting them pull that overnighter stunt anymore. It then came to a screaming halt (for a while).

It ain't so much tubbiness as aerobic fitness. They usually go hand-in-hand, but in grad school I knew a guy who ran marathons and while not *fat* didn't look like he could run 2.2 miles let alone 22 (or whatever that deathrace is). Leg strength helps a lot too. Much easier to move when wearing uniform and carrying equipment if you have some leg strength. Sadly, my 100 pushups on the PT test was very overrated. Boosted my ego quite a bit, but that's mostly it.

Yep. Muscle beach bodies are great for looking good and moving a lot of weight followed by a good rest. But over extended periods of time, your heart and lungs can't feed those muscles enough and you'll give out before a leaner guy does.

I had a Sailor who was an American Indian and was YUGE. 6' 3", built like a Tank... Looked unfit but had about a 12% body fat. One of the strongest Men I've ever met.
Problem was the Height Weight scales used by the Navy back then pegged him as obese. He always did well on the PT tests, but we had to fight to keep him in the Navy due to those stupid charts. Had to do the Water Immersion Fat tests a number of times. They finally put something in his record but it was a pain.

I'm 6'5". BMI is absolute garbage at my height. According to BMI, normal weight range is 165lbs - 220lbs. At 210, I look a little too skinny. Kind of angular and like I need to put on a few to be healthy. At 165, I would look like a concentration camp victim.
