Oh No! The Film Actors Guild Is On Strike!
Hollywood is in bad financial straits, and its actors and writers want more money.
The last contract provided that series and movies made for streaming services could pay actors less money in salary and in residuals. That was back when streaming was a niche thing. Now it's almost half the industry, and the Film Actors Guild wants streaming to pay more.
The actors strike is "probably" going to last a while, according to SAG-AFTRA leadership. Drescher, during an impassioned speech, which you can watch below, said "We have a problem". "This is a very seminal hour for us. I went in thinking that we would be able to avert a strike. The gravity of this move is not lost on me," she said. "It's a very serious thing that impacts thousands, if not millions of people all across this country and around the world. Not only members of this union, but people who work in other industries that service the people that work in this industry." "We had no choice. We are the victims here. We are being victimized by a very greedy entity," she added. Deadline understands that Drescher and others will begin picketing tomorrow morning with a bus leaving SAG-AFTRA HQ around 8:30am, where they will go to Netflix, Paramount, Warner Bros. Discovery and finishing off at Disney. The Nanny star said that she was "shocked" by the way that studio execs are treating actor. "I cannot believe it, quite frankly, how far apart we are on so many things. It is disgusting. Shame on them. They stand on the wrong side of history."
Executives want to let writers and actors starve for a while, before earnestly negotiating with them.
She added that actors can't keep being "marginalized, disrespected and dishonored" by a business model that has been changed by streaming. "If we don't stand tall right now, we are all going to be in trouble. We are all going to be in jeopardy of being replaced by machines and big business," she added.
Deadline revealed earlier this week that the AMPTP strategy for the writers, who are also on strike, was to keep it going until October, when those scribes will be running out of money. "The endgame is to allow things to drag on until union members start losing their apartments and losing their houses," a studio executive told Deadline. Acknowledging the cold-as-ice approach, several other sources reiterated the statement. One insider called it "a cruel but necessary evil."Part of the dispute regards using scans of background actors and animating them via AI for crowd scenes and the like. Apparently studios want to own these scanned models in perpetuity:
I think a lot of people would agree to a one-time payment to use a bodyscan in crowd scenes. What I think she's objecting to is that members of the Film Actors Guild will not be paid to mill around in crowd scenes if the studios own a bunch of cheap AI simulacra. The Film Actors Guild and the Writers International of Motion Pictures should be concerned that the studios will declare the strike a force majeure -- a legal doctrine which allows someone to invalidate contracts when, due to circumstances beyond their control, those contracts can't be fulfilled. They'll use this to cancel contracts and projects they're currently locked into and would like to be free of.
"This 'groundbreaking' AI proposal that they gave us yesterday that our background performers should be able to be scanned and get paid for one day's pay and their companies should own that scan their image, their likeness to be able to use it for the rest of eternity in any project they want with no consent and no compensation, if you think that's a groundbreaking proposal I suggest you think again."

After telling CNBC's David Faber Thursday that the labor situation is "very disturbing" and how the Hollywood unions aren't being realistic about the current financial climate, WGA picketers went postal on social media by pointing out the massive pay disparity between the Disney CEO and most working writers today. In a lengthy sit-down with CNBC from Sun Valley, Idaho, Iger addressed the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes and his ongoing feud with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Though his digs at DeSantis were lauded -- he called the governor's claims that Disney is sexualizing children "preposterous and inaccurate"--
-- he lost the Tinseltown rank and file when he said "this is the worst time in the world" to walk off the job.It pretty much is.
"I understand any labor organization's desire to work on behalf of its members to get the most compensation and be compensated fairly based on the value that they deliver," Iger said. "We managed, as an industry, to negotiate a very good deal with the directors guild that reflects the value that the directors contribute to this great business. We wanted to do the same thing with the writers, and we'd like to do the same thing with the actors. There's a level of expectation that they have, that is just not realistic. And they are adding to the set of the challenges that this business is already facing that is, quite frankly, very disruptive."

I've always wondered about this phrase. Is "shame" a verb or a noun? Is this the transitive verb "shame" with "them" being the direct object of the verb "shame"? I can still watch the old movie channel back when they made real entertainment and had amazing actors. I can go to the Western channel and watch great films or to old TV show channel and watch all of the great old sitcoms. I can get a movie on Netflix or Prime. Hollywood's current crisis isn't mine at all.

I have a Plex with somewhere in the vicinity of 1000 films and 50 Television shows complete season runs.
I pretty much have stopped going to the movies and stopped watching episodic television about 15 years ago.
I go to the theaters to watch the occasional important film, but nothing like I used to from the 80s and 90s.
I mean, I used to see two to three films a week and then around award season, would go to see every best picture nominee.
I haven't done that in twenty years because they have not put out enough quality film content in the last twenty years.
Last year I made an exception and saw every best picture nominee but I did not see them in a movie theater.
It's just not the same anymore.

I've heard nothing about the PGA striking, and I doubt they would because executives tend to be producers and members of that guild.
The DGA successfully negotiated things a few months ago and avoided a strike.
It's the WGA and SAG now, looking down the barrel of a gun. Studios are in a cost cutting mood (Disney and WB have cut a lot recently), and this is going to end up opening the floodgates to cutting a lot more.

Back when movie going was a lot more prevalent (the 1940s was the height), studios were releasing at least that amount. It's kind of hard to say since records are a bit fuzzy, but the number of prestige pictures, B-grade westerns, weepy melodramas, noirs, and gangster films was...very high.

Yeah, modern Hollywood wants billion dollar movies all over the place.
There is a historical parallel in MGM. In the 50s, they were still the big studio, but their movies were so expensive that even though they regularly made a lot of money, they rarely made much of a profit. It was unsustainable, but it allowed them to hold off the collapse of the studio system's effects on itself. This was largely a management problem since Louis B. Mayer favored top-heavy corporate structures that created layers of executives, something Irving Thalberg had resisted until his death in the 30s.
MGM ended up selling its library for pretty much scraps.

He lacks vision. Disney is almost uniquely suited to weather this storm, if it cares to.
First, it is perfect cover to purge the ranks at Disney, getting rid of damaging executives and woke barbarians within the organization. Cut it down to the bone. No choice, strikes on and money trouble. Sorry.
Second, Disney's vault is full of stuff that has never been released - including a ton of stuff they picked up from 20th Century Fox but just locked away because they couldn't be bothered (or "not invented here" syndrome). Go through the vault, find the best candidate pictures, clean 'em up and finish the editing, then release it into a void because nobody else has plenty of productions more or less waiting for an opportunity. Rack up cash and use the period to experiment and see what works in the contemporary market.
Disney can probably come out of this dominating if it wants to. Except that Bob Iger would probably rather let the company fail than to let go of his revolutionary dreams.

Yeah I feel bad for all of them. The only professionals that seem to be left in Hollywood are the set designers, costumers, etc. The guys doing the labor to make the movies look and work right. Even if the film is a complete turd, they look great and the sets are amazing.
But that's the sad part of this, they work for people who are scum, who produce mostly trash, and hate both us and them. Its like doing an amazing job building whore houses - your work is fine but you labor for the worst people.

How hard is it to be a screen writer? I would imagine that there are relatively few genuinely creative ones. I would think that most are Commie sympathizers that know nothing outside of their bubble.

As someone who's a member of SAG, I'll give my thoughts on why even i think the strike is BS.
They never actually planned on negotiating in good faith. They had members (who are pretty much some off the lowest IQ people I've met) vote to allow a strike before even negotiating. They did this because their plan was always to strike as long as the WGA was on strike, as a way to look tough. They just follow the winds, like when Drescher came out and acted like she was against forcing members to get boosters forever, only because she knew the other unions were getting rid of the Covid mandates, before that she was all for it.
For the last few cycles of negotiations (every 3 years) they've accepted pretty crappy raises, given away actual union benefits, and did everything possible to send more money to the pension where it seems to constantly disappear despite huge numbers (and they refuse to allow an independent audit) They're goal is solely to help those top performers (they also refuse to heighten union dues for those making millions, they pay similar to a no name working actor)

The producers union came out and actually said in black and white what they've offered, with numbers and reasoning, and it looks way better than what has been given for years. For example they are offering an 11% raise for some actors (previously it was a 3% raise and SAG gushed at what a good deal it got for members) I assume that 11% raise will be trashed since it's for the lowest earning members, in a trade for something for highest earning members.

They also said they need to fight for residuals, falling to mention over the years SAG actually gave away the need for producers to give residuals to day players, in order to give more to stars/co stars, hurting the small name actors.
This all goes away if the WGA agrees, SAG will cave and sign thr same contract they are looking at today, if not one worse for members.
The only thing i agree they should be fighting for is not allowing AI to use ther image of anyone, as new actors/background actors whil be coerced in to agreeing to give up their likeness, or lose work. But even then i bet they'll just fight to protect ther big names.
