Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Oh No! The Film Actors Guild Is On Strike!Hollywood is in bad financial straits, and its actors and writers want more money. The last contract provided that series and movies made for streaming services could pay actors less money in salary and in residuals. That was back when streaming was a niche thing. Now it's almost half the industry, and the Film Actors Guild wants streaming to pay more. Executives want to let writers and actors starve for a while, before earnestly negotiating with them. Deadline revealed earlier this week that the AMPTP strategy for the writers, who are also on strike, was to keep it going until October, when those scribes will be running out of money. "The endgame is to allow things to drag on until union members start losing their apartments and losing their houses," a studio executive told Deadline. Acknowledging the cold-as-ice approach, several other sources reiterated the statement. One insider called it "a cruel but necessary evil."Part of the dispute regards using scans of background actors and animating them via AI for crowd scenes and the like. Apparently studios want to own these scanned models in perpetuity: I think a lot of people would agree to a one-time payment to use a bodyscan in crowd scenes. What I think she's objecting to is that members of the Film Actors Guild will not be paid to mill around in crowd scenes if the studios own a bunch of cheap AI simulacra. The Film Actors Guild and the Writers International of Motion Pictures should be concerned that the studios will declare the strike a force majeure -- a legal doctrine which allows someone to invalidate contracts when, due to circumstances beyond their control, those contracts can't be fulfilled. They'll use this to cancel contracts and projects they're currently locked into and would like to be free of. Even leftwing simp Bob Iger is hinting about this. More on that later. -- he lost the Tinseltown rank and file when he said "this is the worst time in the world" to walk off the job.It pretty much is.

Meanwhile, Russia further descends into fascism...
From the Moscow Times: ‘It’s Hell’: Russia’s Transgender Community Rushes to Undergo Gender Reassignment as Legal Ban Looms MOSCOW – Alexei, a transgender man, had always planned to someday change the gender marker on his Russian passport — but time is now running out. “I’m in a panic. The process of my gender transition had been delayed because I have been living on my own since I was 18 and I didn’t have enough money. Now I have to start it urgently,” Alexei, 23, told The Moscow Times. “It's hell,” he said, sitting at a cafe in central Moscow. Alexei is one of the thousands of transgender people in Russia who have been affected by new legislation which, once signed into law, will ban them from accessing gender-affirming health services — and deprive them of the right to determine their own identity and future. No one is going to take the side of the actors or writers. I have a Plex with somewhere in the vicinity of 1000 films and 50 Television shows complete season runs. I pretty much have stopped going to the movies and stopped watching episodic television about 15 years ago. I go to the theaters to watch the occasional important film, but nothing like I used to from the 80s and 90s. I mean, I used to see two to three films a week and then around award season, would go to see every best picture nominee. I haven't done that in twenty years because they have not put out enough quality film content in the last twenty years. Posted by: redchief at July 14, 2023 02:36 PM (+emvj) ======= I've heard nothing about the PGA striking, and I doubt they would because executives tend to be producers and members of that guild. The DGA successfully negotiated things a few months ago and avoided a strike. It's the WGA and SAG now, looking down the barrel of a gun. Studios are in a cost cutting mood (Disney and WB have cut a lot recently), and this is going to end up opening the floodgates to cutting a lot more. Here's a hint, coke addled studio degenerates; find other people to write and star in movies. Hollywood is in the middle of the biggest creative drought I've ever seen; solicit scripts from random people and the movies won't be any worse. I could write a script and it would be better than anything Disney has put out in years. Find some great novels out there and adapt them without raping the story completely (looking at you Netflix, and how you shit on "The Gray Man".)

> WGA picketers went postal on social media by pointing out the massive pay disparity between the Disney CEO and most working writers today.
CEOs, even sleestaks like Iger, have a HUGE job. They determine the direction of the company long term. They can make or break an entire company. Their decisions influence how the company operates even many years after they're gone. A lot of jobs and money depend on what they do. All of those perks of being a CEO like the jet and office and assistants and all that come with the expectation that you're ALWAYS working. A writer at Disney puts words in the mouth of a cartoon animal for a kids show. They're very different jobs. Posted by: bonhomme at July 14, 2023 02:40 PM (R38qh) 134

Posted by: rickb223 at July 14, 2023 02:55 PM (9J0M0) ======= Yeah, modern Hollywood wants billion dollar movies all over the place. There is a historical parallel in MGM. In the 50s, they were still the big studio, but their movies were so expensive that even though they regularly made a lot of money, they rarely made much of a profit. It was unsustainable, but it allowed them to hold off the collapse of the studio system's effects on itself. This was largely a management problem since Louis B. Mayer favored top-heavy corporate structures that created layers of executives, something Irving Thalberg had resisted until his death in the 30s. MGM ended up selling its library for pretty much scraps. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, perfectly captured in the frame by William Wyler at July 14, 2023 02:58 PM (LvTSG) 274

Yeah, no - if you dig even a moment deeper into these made-up stories - it's the Democrats, chagrined at Matt's take down of Gestapo Gruber Herr Wray yesterday that have ASKED for an old and discredited investigation by tossed out former Ethics Chairman Ted Deutsch be reopened - and that is it. And it won't be. These two outfits even both re-released slyly the letter by former Chairman Deutsch from way back in 2021 outlining the allegations - long since laughed out of court in Florida - to try and give this non-story some credibility. he lost the Tinseltown rank and file when he said "this is the worst time in the world" to walk off the job.
++++ He lacks vision. Disney is almost uniquely suited to weather this storm, if it cares to. First, it is perfect cover to purge the ranks at Disney, getting rid of damaging executives and woke barbarians within the organization. Cut it down to the bone. No choice, strikes on and money trouble. Sorry. Second, Disney's vault is full of stuff that has never been released - including a ton of stuff they picked up from 20th Century Fox but just locked away because they couldn't be bothered (or "not invented here" syndrome). Go through the vault, find the best candidate pictures, clean 'em up and finish the editing, then release it into a void because nobody else has plenty of productions more or less waiting for an opportunity. Rack up cash and use the period to experiment and see what works in the contemporary market. Disney can probably come out of this dominating if it wants to. Except that Bob Iger would probably rather let the company fail than to let go of his revolutionary dreams. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at July 14, 2023 03:07 PM (t0OGg) 337

Even uniparty hacks like Pence learned to do alright in interviews with antagonistic leftwing interviewers. Question premises, make reasonable sounding statements, don't get pinned down or angry, and you come off looking like a reasonable person who's being unfairly dealt with. But these toolbags simply cannot handle someone who actually raises legitimate concerns and questions their assumptions based on even a little bit of honest, simple logic. WFB - Mike Pence and The Fight Over GOP Foreign Policy
Column: Support for Ukraine Is a winning is Republicans soured on aid to Ukraine not because they side with Russia, but because they consider the war to be another wasteful Biden project. When Republicans learn the facts behind U.S. involvement, however, their instinctual hawkishness kicks in. What they have lacked is a prominent GOP spokesman for freedom. Mike Pence has stepped into the breach. Of course, at this stage, Republican support for Ukraine is considerably stronger than Republican support for Pence’s campaign. He trails both former president Donald Trump and Florida governor Ron DeSantis in national and state polls. Nonetheless, Pence’s decision to highlight his support for Ukraine is not only courageous, but also savvy. It draws a contrast with DeSantis, who hasn’t found his footing on the issue, as well as with Trump, who says that he will end the war in 24 hours, with details to be worked out later. Aid to Ukraine, moreover, is the one place where Republican voters disagree with the former president. It’s a wedge issue in a GOP primary that, unlike criminal indictments, separates Trump from many in his party. Posted by: BetaCuck4Lyfe at July 14, 2023 03:15 PM (MFZ8i) 390

If Disney were making money TJM, the streaming losses could be tolerated. But movies are now losing money (last 12 months at about a billion dollar loss), forced Hulu purchase from Comcast probably going to come in at around $10B which they don't have cash for - and for which there will be annual losses from Hulu. And the WSJ pointing to falling park attendance probably not totally being compensated for increased entrance costs. You cannot justify it's stock price even around $90 a share at this point. The whole company will be sold for pennies on the dollar.

Fair enough. I was being churlish. But what's your point ultimately? That we can do nothing or support nothing unless it's casualty-free? There's more or less an existential war for the soul of the country underway. And popular cultural institutions like television and movies are all-in on the other side. If you're not willing to take any casualties, then it's time to surrender. Because winning isn't going to be costless. "Conservatives" (I use scare quotes because I don't think there's really any such thing anymore in any meaningful sense) have got to get over this obsession they have with being The Cool Parent, who just wants to rap about things and never be involved with anything as heavy as discipline or consequences. Been busy today and missed this post when it happened.
As someone who's a member of SAG, I'll give my thoughts on why even i think the strike is BS. They never actually planned on negotiating in good faith. They had members (who are pretty much some off the lowest IQ people I've met) vote to allow a strike before even negotiating. They did this because their plan was always to strike as long as the WGA was on strike, as a way to look tough. They just follow the winds, like when Drescher came out and acted like she was against forcing members to get boosters forever, only because she knew the other unions were getting rid of the Covid mandates, before that she was all for it. For the last few cycles of negotiations (every 3 years) they've accepted pretty crappy raises, given away actual union benefits, and did everything possible to send more money to the pension where it seems to constantly disappear despite huge numbers (and they refuse to allow an independent audit) They're goal is solely to help those top performers (they also refuse to heighten union dues for those making millions, they pay similar to a no name working actor) Posted by: Rbastid at July 14, 2023 07:09 PM (CW4bX) 520
As for this contract/ negotiation. SAG has been vague when it comes to what their fighting for/ doing. They really won't say why they're refusing to negotiate, and in the video put out they pretty much said "we're doing this to fight for other unions that have nothing to do with film/tv" so they're using their members to just push leftist ideology to other businesses.
The producers union came out and actually said in black and white what they've offered, with numbers and reasoning, and it looks way better than what has been given for years. For example they are offering an 11% raise for some actors (previously it was a 3% raise and SAG gushed at what a good deal it got for members) I assume that 11% raise will be trashed since it's for the lowest earning members, in a trade for something for highest earning members. Posted by: Rbastid at July 14, 2023 07:13 PM (CW4bX) 521
Ive seen some actors say they need to fight for the pension, since it's been made harder to achieve. But they fail to mention it was SAG who did that, at the start of Covid. They got sued because of it and i think that's one reason they are striking, to make people worth sorry memories think they're fighting for them, when in fact they're the ones hurting the members.
They also said they need to fight for residuals, falling to mention over the years SAG actually gave away the need for producers to give residuals to day players, in order to give more to stars/co stars, hurting the small name actors. This all goes away if the WGA agrees, SAG will cave and sign thr same contract they are looking at today, if not one worse for members. The only thing i agree they should be fighting for is not allowing AI to use ther image of anyone, as new actors/background actors whil be coerced in to agreeing to give up their likeness, or lose work. But even then i bet they'll just fight to protect ther big names. Posted by: Rbastid at July 14, 2023 07:18 PM (CW4bX) 522
