Saturday Morning Coffee Break & Prayer Revival

willowunnamed (6).jpg

(H/T Sharon, Willow's Apprentice)

Where the heck has July gone? Happy Saturday morning.

Rules? Wing it, it's an open thread.

***

To tip or not to tip? 3 reasons why tipping has gotten so out of control

It has become as much a part of our daily lives as getting our to-go coffee: the screen turn.

It's the moment when you've ordered your coffee and the barista turns the payment screen toward you, with prompts asking you for a tip.

Tipping is on the rise across the U.S. as more and more businesses have started asking for a little extra: Fast food restaurants, grocery stores, plumbers, online retailers, stadiums, and even self-checkout machines are now asking for a tip these days.

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:

6/24 – Jewell’s niece is not handling the chemo well. She has been very sick since last Tuesday. Jewells was also sick most of last week, after radiation and chemo.
7/8 Update – Jewell’s niece went in for her second infusion treatment, but they couldn’t do it because she had a UTI. She’s so depressed. The doctors will probably make some changes to her drugs, since she has felt so awful.

6/20 – J requested a prayer for her younger son Matt, whose seizure symptoms are returning again after 20 years of normalcy. So far he has not had a full-blown seizure, and the doctors are working to adjust his medication. But he can feel them in the background and they are interfering with his ability to do his job. Also, his second child is due in September.

6/24 – Fox2! asked for prayers as he had to spend the week in the hospital with AFIB.

6/24 – Screaming in Digital asked for prayers for an old friend, who was fighting cancer. The latest news was not good, but he is still receiving treatment.

6/24 – RetSgtRN asked for prayers for her son-in-law, Kenny, who at 37 is battling acute leukemia. He beat lymphoma 2 years ago. He has 2 boys, ages 3 and 7. He is also a police officer in a very large city and fortunately his boss has been supportive. Thanks to all for your prayers!
7/1 Update – Kenny is in remission. Now he will begin treatments for his bone marrow transplant, which will require him to remain in the hospital for 100 days, including part of it in isolation.

6/27 – Catch Thirty-Thr33’s father will return home from the hospital, and he will be visited by a hospice nurse twice a week. He is 82 now and has been fighting lung cancer for 18 months now. Please pray for him.
7/10 Update – Catch Thirty-Thr33’s father passed away today.

7/1 – FenelonSpoke asked for prayers for the woman that she is running with for township committee. The woman is having bad digestive pain.

7/1 – rhennigantx asked for prayers for his buddy Jason, who lost a good friend to an overdose. Jason is very angry at a (so called) friend who gave the other friend the drugs.

7/1 – JM in Fla/III asked for prayers for his brother and sister-in-law, who are struggling with their adult son; he is schizophrenic but does not always take his medicine.

7/4 – neverenoughcaffeine asked for prayers for Tom, Andy, and Wilson. Their wife and mom Yumiko died in a freak accident on Sunday and Tom was severely injured.

7/7 – Misanthropic Humanitarian asked for prayers for his friend, Lonesome Ed. He has knee issues and will be undergoing surgery later this month.

7/8 – Tuna said she could use some prayers. Her husband passed away on 7/8.

7/8 – LenNeal posted some updates that he has serious heart damage after having Covid multiple times and the J&J vax.

7/8 – RedMindBlueState requested prayers for his oldest childhood friend (and occasional lurker), whose wife has colon cancer. They don’t know what stage or treatment yet, but could use prayers.

7/8 – Emmie asked for prayers. Her husband is having a pacemaker implanted on Tuesday. She asks for prayers for a successful procedure, a full recovery, and improved energy and function.

7/13 – FenelonSpoke requested prayers for Dr. M and his medical team, for his upcoming heart surgery.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

Romans 8:26-27
26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

5 Prayers up for those that have asked us for them;
Prayers up for those that know they need them but have not asked us for them;
Prayers up for those that need them but don’t know it yet; and
Prayers up for those who pray alone, asking in silence, and whose prayers are known but to God!

And prayers up for the citizens of this country which now seems to be controlled by demons not patriots!

"...Square, the company behind a lot of the electronic payment screens, gets a cut of each transaction, including the tip.

So creating software that encourages tipping (and encourages big tips) means more money for companies like Square."

36 **Self-checkout machines** are asking for tips? I'm doing the labor. They ought to tip me!

I use the damn things as little as I can. Not only are they profiting from my labor, but most of 'em have cameras with a screen *right in my face*. I don't want to see what I look like while I'm contributing my effort to their bottom line. Yes, I know I'm being photographed everywhere in their store, but I don't want it shoved in my face.

In one Walmart I put a plastic bag over the screen. You'd have thought I spray painted it from the way the staffer squawked. I said, "I'll be done in a minute." "I'll call the manager!" "Please do."

The "manager" was too busy looking at her phone to bother with me.

58 I have now been in MD for 3 years this month but I will never get used to the 90+ degrees day after day without a break. In New England it tends to get cool at night at least. Or after it rains. Here, when it rains, the humidity just seems to get worse.
But, I was thinking this morning, that if I could go back and change some of the difficult parts of my life, I wouldn't because I would not be where I am right now at this moment .

We'll fight with you all, for you all and hope these prayers will be heard by God. You and all the others needing morale boosters, remember we are pushing you in the correct direction, God Willing.

Opening time emblazoned on the door: 7 am, including Saturday. Time on my watch: 7:05 am. The door remained shut, even though I knocked and customers were lining up for oil changes. 70 Annie's Stew does such a good job of keeping up with prayer requests!

Thanks for your prayer support, Horde. Mr. Bassman is recovering well.

Now we need wisdom on medications. The doctor has recommended adding five medications. What bothers me is that one med is based on an inaccurate measurement, another is to lower his blood pressure which is usually low but spikes after heart surgeries, another is for a condition that has never shown up in all of his weeks of wearing a heart monitor but gave a brief twinge while the pacemaker electrical signals were being adjusted, two meds that increase risk of stroke if you forget to take them one day, and another med to treat symptoms he doesn't have while exacerbating a common condition in older people.

I'm really glad we had this doctor to do the surgery, but all these prescriptions are making me nervous. I think part of the problem is that any doctor who treats Medicare patients has to walk a tightrope between his clinical judgment and Medicare's one-size-fits-all-or-we-won't-pay-you approach.

We are looking into getting a second opinion.

We actually had a taste of this in Michigan during May. It was hot but unusually dry, very low humidity, and people were strolling around noting that it did "feel" like the 80s. Of course we were in a drought then. Now it's raining and oppressively humid.

Your concerns are justified. Question everything. Ask for an end point on meds to avoid perpetuation of unneeded meds due to system inertia. Often the prescribing doc after a procedure is not that engaged, and primary care docs tend to continue meds just because. Short term meds become long term meds quite easily.

The dry heat business is noticeable in that shade is actually cooler, rather than just "less hot" as in humid climates. Mrs. Wolfus No. 2 and I visited her home town of Tucson in June of '85, and it hit 107 each day. That is halfway to boiling, people.

FWIW:
My second variation on a restatement of the key point of Marcus Aurelius "Meditations", Book 3, as I understood it:

The acts of days past are lost to time; both your own acts, and those of others.
They are known to you, but unalterable, try as you will to change them.
The future that lies before you is always unknown and might exist only for a few fleeting minutes, or continue for decades.
The only instant of time over which you have control is now, so endeavor to live your life today, so that tomorrow you will forever be proud of your actions of yesterday!

And yes indeed, you are a lucky and blessed man!

Almost two years since our son cut us out of his life, although he was drifting away for years before that. Our two grandbabies aren't so baby anymore now, but we aren't in each others' lives. Cruel to all involved.

I pray for the Spirit of Truth to fill the hearts of the misled.

One of the better aspects of "dry heat" is the Evap Cooler, which dosn't work in humid climates. Today I try and keep the house under 70° using only water and air. When I replaced the 30 year old boxes of rust on the roof 3 years ago I went with the biggest cooler I could fit up there. No regrets as I don't use window A/C anymore.

Today will be a test though.

Can't speak to that specifically, but I do see a lot of odd machinations when it comes to defining "normal" in all sorts of health metrics.

And I believe that while some deviations from the statistical norm do indicate a pathological process, that is not always the case. All labs must be taken in context of the greater individual whole. Unfortunately, modern medicine cannot be bothered with individuals, and is greatly enamored with "treating the number" rather than treating the disease (never mind treating the patient).

The thing about cigars is that nominally you don't inhale into your lungs. There's way too much tobacco and the priming's are pretty high in some blends that can lead to tobacco poisoning.

So, it's more of a puffing thing, I'd imagine similar to smoking a pipe.

289 To put it another way: if you think we are in for a systemic collapse, elections are just a way to keep busy until it happens.

Look at the US military. They're mobilizing 3,500 reservists and pulling 450 people from the IRR just to sustain summer exercises in Europe.

This isn't some big buildup to invade somebody, it's just trying to make sure Son of Reforger can actually function. Mobilizing reservists on that scale just to run around in Poland and Germany for a while shows that we've already reached the point where the system has failed.

That's going to have profound consequences and it's getting zero attention.

292 Seriously folks:

I was blessed by God to survive two cancers. But I grew to understand two things.

1. Cancer patients are typically older with fewer living relatives and friends.

2. Even a simple conversation about the weather or their treatment can immensely brighten their day.

If you are in good health, try to volunteer a day or two (or more) per month at a local cancer center to help these vulnerable people. Cancer isn't contagious. Your efforts could help save someone by lifting their spirits.

Posted by: setnaffa at July 15, 2023 10:48 AM (rZVTl)

293 Just an observation.

Since the widespread use of electronic medical records, I've noticed that providers look more at numbers than their patients. One reason is that "abnormal numbers" appear in spreadsheets and categories and are compared to medications prescribed and office visits and general health outcomes. It's all numbers. So if your LDL cholesterol is ONE POINT above range, you're supposed to be prescribed a statin. If you have had ANY sort of cardiac event, you are prescribed aspirin, a statin and an ace inhibitor or calcium channel blocker. Sometimes also a beta blocker. And an anticoagulant if you have a stent or pacemaker. Some of these meds make sense on a short term basis. But often, like Muldoon stated, primary care has no impetus to get you OFF those medications. Ask for an end date. And if there isn't one, ask why.

Yes, they're still corrupt, but things ARE different. People are paying attention, and the notion that the '20 level of corruption will be tolerated is false. A Dem attempt to subvert the voting process is no longer unimaginable to the average voter, and they are angry about it. Ignore them at your peril.

That's why people view the Pences and Hutchinsons with such contempt, and why they have NO chance. If you still haven't gotten the message, you're either hopelessly corrupt, or irretrievably stupid; possibly both.

You should consider going to 'Yee Olde Vape Store' and pick out a vape pen and a 'juice' which is close to nicotine flavor. Might set you back sixty dollars. But that's enough to last you a month. You can still smoke but after a while you'll notice you prefer the vape. It's cleaner and you still get your nicotine hit.

There's like 3 chemicals in vape juice and something like 5,000 in tobacco smoke. A pack a day in PA is $300 a month vs maybe $25 a month for vape juice. That's a lot of money going up in smoke.

If you're going to use the analogy of a traitor, Pence as Brutus might be more appropriate. although Pence hasn't literally stabbed Trump. Politcians run for various reasons. Trump was President. DeSantis was Governor of Florida. They're not in the same government.

But really, I find the Trump/DeSantis wars unappealing.

I think it's interesting watching the various schisms and "wins" for progressive Christianity. They're getting their way and can now rewrite their theology as a form of goddess worship. How fun!

But it won't satisfy them, because that was never the point. And so they will continue to push, and in so doing, create their own resistance. The people they persecuted no longer have any illusions that being "nice" will help.

In a lot of ways, we needed this to rediscover the truth faith, not the lukewarm pap that had defined Western religion for so long.

There's a philosopher, I forget which one, because who cares, who says "if you could go back in time..." you'd make all the same decisions you already did. Because you are who you are.

A lot of free will adherents don't like this answer, because it suggests we don't have it, but really, all it means is, everything that makes up who you are, your genetics, your experiences, your thoughts, emotions, hopes, dreams, mistakes, weaknesses, etc... they ARE who you are. You can't predict it all the time, but your choices are set by who you are. That's not NOT free will, it's just, basically, that if we have enough data, we'd know exactly what each of us will do, every time. The fact we don't doesn't change the fact. Your life WAS set from the beginning, and so was everyone else's. Not because you lack free will.

339 Vote fraud has been common knowledge for Chicago & Detroit for 40, 50+ years. Having it known in more areas by more people will not overcome 40% when they say,
"Fvck You, We Won".

Demanding recounts have shifted to the "Fvck You, We Won" crowd declaring that an insurrection, or attempting to illegally overturn the election.

Observing that verifiable election 'irregularities' cast doubt on the legitimacy of an election draws scoffs of conspiracy theorists or anti-Americanism from the "Fvck You, We Won".

There is no voting our way out of this.

But based upon Lenin/Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, etc. once the killing starts it will only be a matter of decades before efforts to fix the problem will succeed.
