Americans' Confidence In Higher Education Has Collapsed

Beginning with the Moral Panic of 2015-2016, woke leftists have transformed every single institution -- even the ones they didn't have majority control over -- into very stupid, very dishonest propaganda organizations for the left wing of the Democrat Party (which is really just "the Democrat Party" now, as it's all left wing).

They have destroyed every single institution, including corporation, including the military, diverting them from their actual missions and perverting them to become psyops disinformation groups.

Americans are finally waking up and realizing this.

These aren't your daddy's institutions any more.

Gallup:

Americans' Confidence in Higher Education Down Sharply

* 36% have "a great deal" or "quite a lot" of confidence in higher education

* Confidence down from 48% in 2018 and 57% in 2015

* All major subgroups less confident, with Republicans dropping the most

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Americans' confidence in higher education has fallen to 36%, sharply lower than in two prior readings in 2015 (57%) and 2018 (48%). In addition to the 17% of U.S. adults who have "a great deal" and 19% "quite a lot" of confidence, 40% have "some" and 22% "very little" confidence.

The latest decline in the public's trust in higher education is from a June 1-22 Gallup poll that also found confidence in 16 other institutions has been waning in recent years. Many of these entities, which are tracked more often than higher education, are now also at or near their lowest points in confidence. Although diminished, higher education ranks fourth in confidence among the 17 institutions measured, with small business, the military and the police in the top three spots.

Small business -- not major corporations.

In 2015, majorities of Americans in all key subgroups expressed confidence in higher education, with one exception -- independents (48%). By 2018, though, confidence had fallen across all groups, with the largest drop, 17 percentage points, among Republicans. In the latest measure, confidence once again fell across the board, but Republicans' sank the most -- 20 points to 19%, the lowest of any group. Confidence among adults without a college degree and those aged 55 and older dropped nearly as much as Republicans' since 2018.

Even though all subgroups show declining confidence in higher education, significant gaps persist among political, educational, gender and age subgroups. Notably, the only key subgroup with majority-level confidence in higher education is Democrats (59%).

Every institution has taken its reserves of trust -- built up painstakingly over decades, sometimes centuries -- and closed their accounts in 2015-2016 to take their all of their professional regard and social capital to spend it all madly on Getting Trump and Teaching the Lower Orders Who Runs Bartertown.

And now it's all gone. All of it. Every last drop of it.

They have pissed away their respect and prestige on short-term political goals, which no sane person would do. But in 2015-2016, almost the entire (so-called) professional class had a mental breakdown, which went unnoticed because they all suffered it, including their psychiatrists. They all collectively decided that going mad was the only sane response to... the country electing a man they didn't vote for.

So they killed every institution, flayed the skin off them, put on that skin as a skin-suit, and went around demanding the respect that the institutions they destroyed formerly commanded.

And now we see Jake Tapper and Anderson Cooper having spastic meltdown every single night demanding to know, "Why doesn't the public believe us any more? What's wrong with them?"

The foil is to keep your doorknobs from smelling like bear meat if you forget and feed your dogs bear meat. That way the canids won't be able to track you via the doorknobs.

106 The Supreme Court's decision may also affect a form of affirmative action practiced by many colleges and universities, which is affirmative action in favor of males (particularly small liberal arts colleges).

Males are increasingly disinclined to go to college - it's a hostile environment, you may be branded for life as a sex offender if you have a messy breakup, etc.

The problem is that males are even more disinclined to attend a school that is mostly women, and a lot of women are disinclined to attend a school that is mostly women, so schools informally try to keep the percentage of women attending below 60% or so, by admitting less qualified males.

BTW, this is why student loans are increasingly defined as a "women's issue" - the people who borrow a quarter of a million bucks to get a BA and MA in sociology from an expensive school like NYU are almost all women.

108 Part of the issue is that for education to have value, the people there must have a mastery of the subjects they are teaching you.

But they don't.

If I want to increase my Biblical literacy, I want someone who has studied it more than me, preferably a lot more, to help me as I read through it to take away a deeper understanding.

But if my tutor is just a woke, minority quota hire that wants to tell me about the harms inflicted by people that believe the Bible, well, my Biblical literacy won't improve. In fact it will be diminished.

College doesn't have too many experts left and there are too many colleges to be able to put an expert in every classroom. So you just get moderately literate instructors that are as likely to tell you things that are incorrect as they are to teach you things that are correct.

And because they know they don't actually know much about their subject, they instead give students a cocktail party explanation, the same type of expertise that one might feign in a group full of people they are trying to impress (but hoping someone in the group doesn't actually possess knowledge of the subject for fear of being exposed as a poser).

Thanks for finishing my thought.
I am a proud alumna of Sweet Briar College, a small women's college in Virginia, class of 1986.
NONE of my professors injected politics or their personal stance into the classroom. Everything was about the subject.

I am blessed to have had a true liberal arts education with a major in English literature (manga cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa).

I now teach at a Title 1 high school (students come from economically disadvantaged homes). Many of them are far behind in their reading skills, but they've been promoted anyway. One suggestion I have to address the problem is an intermediate "boot camp, year-round" school for students to get caught up to grade level; no student moves on until he or she shows proficiency on the grade level.

I've taught for 34 years. I am devoted to my vocation.

When she finds out that one of them is a Marine veteran, she basically calls him a medium functioning retard. Turns out that he's got the highest IQ in the group (I wanna say it was around 138 or so), and of course she has the lowest at around 115.

Mechanic that came out to fix it was a young black man - in the middle of part of some of the whitest portion of flyover country.

We got chatting and I asked him how he got started working on big diesel engines. He said he was a tank mechanic in the army. When he got out, he wanted to find a place where only his boss told him what to do, NOT what other black people told him to do.

I asked him how that was working out. He got a big grin, and said that his boss was a great guy and he loved his job!

And that is very rare since most kids get some sort of financial aid, and get a summer job and have parents who contribute something.

The average student loan amount for graduating students is $35k. The people you hear about in the news with hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of dollars in student debt are aberrations not the norm.

Well that's the key that French either does not or will not understand: all of polite society, culture, and social behavior requires a structure of agreed-upon actions and responses. If you remove those, then being the last guy saying "please" and "thank you" just makes you the victim and the one that everyone takes advantage of.

We are in an abusive culture, where any weakness is attacked and used as leverage to destroy you. People didn't stop apologizing because they are innately rude, they stopped because it only feeds the abusers.

This led to a partial nihilism where it's not right to put your values on other people. That was authoritarian.

Now, they don't need you to have your own opinion, they would prefer that you not even try. The experts KNOW.

But this misses the point.

If you are both good and ambitious, as a plumber you'll eventually get your master's plumbers license (or whatever your state's equivalent might be) and own your own business. Well, not everyone owns a hedge fund and an estate in the Hamptons like you do, so I understand your position.

Some people like running their own businesses and having employees and doing things, so they can afford to go duck hunting and owning an RV. Every decision in life has trade offs, and where making good money by being competent means you can't jet off to St. Malo for a weekend, lots of people are willing to make that trade.

The oddest thing about the US is the millionaire who owns his own business and lives in a ranch style house in the suburbs next to they guy who is a programmer and the school teacher. They tend to be thrifty and not very showy and give a lot of value to the community.
There are a lot of them. They tend to work in trades, and own drycleaners and other "depressingly blue collar" industries.

You "know where to tap" (harkening back to the ship mechanic story) so charge what you are worth.

314 Unfortunately, no where is safe. The Left will harry us to the ends of the earth...for our benefit.

Democrats Are Disappearing in Rural America. One Group Is Trying to Fix That $500 at a Time...a program offering rural county parties and organizations $500 every three months is changing the way Democrats compete in predominantly deep red areas....those small influxes of cash have a measurable effect. In the 2022 midterm elections, when 72 counties were in the program, two studies of the group’s work found a 3 percentage point boost in congressional vote share for Democrats.

when you get run off the road or pelted with stones for being a Democrat or are refused service for being LGBTQ or non-Christian, I can sympathize with Democrats for not wanting to be in rural areas, even if it makes all Democrats more vulnerable in case of a Civil War.

If there ever is a Civil War, it won't be between Republicans and Democrats, it will be between Republicans and the U.S. Army. Guess which one I'm betting on winning.

In my bright-red rural area, Republicans really run up the score so they can offset the urban vote.

The problem is that all societies are smoke and mirrors, the question is whether everyone is on board or if a significant percentage are stealing instead of supporting the illusion.

Reality is that we can cope with about 100-150 people personally, and culture and societies based on cultures is a way to allow us to live and survive in larger units.
Most cultures collapse when the complexity is beyond the competence of the social tools to deal with internal stresses and external threats. Many of the makeshifts created to cope with emergencies are toxic in themselves and are used to steal even more. Some work very well which is why we have cities larger than Hattush or Rome at it's height.

Anyways, my rant, and my fears. Ignore it if you want.

370 The other thing I think the trades offer that a lot of ostensibly more prestigious jobs requiring college don't is stability. Recession, depression, whatever, people are still going to need to shit and are still going to want said shit to journey elsewhere. They're still going to need running water. Etc. And congress isn't going to be granting visas to foreign plumbers. A lot of office jobs are a hell of a lot less essential than imagined.

The massive surge in degrees has largely occurred in that population range (about to 40 or so). Someone with a college degree in the 1980s isn't in remotely the same position as someone with a college degree in 2023.

I specifically said 25-34 year olds.

You're arguing they'll make more money later, the data doesn't exist to support that as of yet. Looking at older cohorts which have less labor competition to infer they'll grow into those wages is likely to be misleading.

If I had it to do over again (not likely) I would go into electrical engineering.

Posted by: gourmand du jour at July 11, 2023 06:14 PM

I did a bit of electrical work before entering into computer programming. At some point in code writing it was slapping my forehead and saying, 'This is electrical wiring!"

Software writing was like stepping on an out of control treadmill. Fun for a while. Electrical engineering moved a lot slower and would have been better for me.

At a certain point I got off the treadmill and said, 'That's enough." I might still be wiring homes.

375 Then there is the entire medical profession. The problem with MD's is the first letter. It is upside down.

376 I trust the Churches that still celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass.

Their catechism classes for the children are first-rate too.

377 I really enjoyed writing software and developing systems. I found professional fulfillment.

I could think in logical steps.

Most folks cannot.

What a pair of dunces I helped create, then turned over to PA State Universities. They weren't so damn dumb before they went.

Sent them to one of the jumped-up Normal schools, did ya?

For those not familiar with PA educational history, the state established a bunch of 2 yr Normal schools to train elementary teachers. In a process much akin to grade inflation, they morphed into 4 year "State Teachers College(s)", and then viola'! _Slippery Rock State University_ granting PhDs in things like Theater Arts Management. I'm being a bit snarky here. :-)

/0, don't give up on them. You don't have to be close, but stay in touch. My daughter was a parent's nightmare, but straightened out around 40.
