Evening and morning, early people! 'Tis Monday, yes, and my boss may be back in the office today (or maybe he's just traveling from Germany today; his calendar is unclear). Either way I probably will not be able to leave work early. Ah, well.
Anyway, I'm up to work out. Howzabout you? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at July 10, 2023 04:14 AM (omVj0) 8

Posted by: OrangeEnt at July 10, 2023 *** I use it. It's free and supposedly secure. The only troubles I've had with its free version is that you have a limit of how many subfolders you can add (I have three and it stopped me from doing a fourth), and I've yet to figure out how to set my default font to something larger. Posted by: Skip at July 10, 2023 *** I have about four ways to get to work in the early am. All of them stink, but the one I use as default stinks a lot less. One involves driving through a skeevy area; one involves driving partly through an even worse area; and the third is just the reverse of the way I come home in the evening, so, dull. There are one or two others I've tried. Lousy road surfaces and a lot of lights. Wolfus Aurelius and kill San Franpsycho I will save Wolfus Aurelius and kill San Franpsycho. I choose Wolfus Aurelius because the name sounds cooler and more badass. Plus, I have a personal preference for wolves over psycho things. Sorry, San Franpsycho, you just didn't make the cut. Posted by: OrangeEnt at July 10, 2023 04:34 AM (Angsy) ---- IMAP keeps all your mail on the server so you can access it from different PCs. Outlook does that. POP downloads the new mail to you computer, when asked, and only keeps a copy on the server for a limited time (set by you or when your server mailbox fills up). For POP you need an email client like Thunderbird (I still use Eudora). Thunderbird will also configure as an IMAP client. I like the idea of accessing emails from other providers in TBird. I've used Cox for over twenty years and they're my internet provider. I could keep it and get access in TBird which it doesn't look like you can in Proton. That way I don't have to go to every place I put in the Cox email and change it. That might be a consideration, although it looks like the interface might not be ideal.

I use Microsoft Outlook as my email client. A few years ago Microsoft sorted out their email backend for their consumer facing email and since then I have found it be stable and it syncs perfectly across my PCs and phone. The only issue I have run into is my profiles go sideways from time to time and I have to recreate them and sync things up. It is a trivial thing to deal with. I have tried all types of different web and desktop clients over the decades, such as Thunderbird, and they all generally worked OK but eventually I found them to lacking in features, reliability, and such. Outlook isn't free but I am ok with that - it is like a utility bill anymore, one that gives me fair value for the cost. YMWV.

Posted by: Nan in cool AZ - Just our experience: We tried the Chromebook route with a kid and it's horrible if you've ever done anything with a PC or expect to do PC things with the Chromebook. If all you want is facebook and youtube (essentially a large phone), they're probably fine, but I can't recommend them for anyone with needs beyond that. I can't recommend a system right now, but Amazon is about to start their "prime days" sale and should have some decent deals. If you've got a Best Buy near you then you can search open box stock (comes with full warranty) on their website and find some great deals that way. Some will ship, too. Open box excellent = new. Anyway, today's topic is about "Eating in Amsterdam" so the words are about various Dutch foods, including pancakes and stroopewaffles. I have been to Amsterdam and Holland a couple of times. One food connected word is "Snert". I never ate a snert while I was there-that I know of. It sounds like something from a Dr. Suess book. Spoilers ahead I read the first two books in the series, but stopped because they were giving me a bad taste in my mouth. It's been a while, but if I remember, the big reveal at the end of book 1 turns out to be that the white guy is the evil cannibal troll. I found it an interesting take and quite amusing. And then in second book, the protagonist makes a deal at the end with Cthulhu to destroy our world, basically because of the wickedness of white people. They were unjust and unfair and evil, and so therefore everything must burn. I stopped reading his books after that, because once was interesting, twice starts to feel like he doesn't like me. >>>Disclaimer: Hedgehogs, hedgehogs uber alles...
googletranslate tells me that hedgehog in German is der Igel. a small nocturnal Old World mammal with a spiny coat and short legs, able to roll itself into a ball for defense. Posted by: m at July 10, 2023 08:47 AM (ASp1y) 252
161 Any suggestions for a non Apple laptop in the medium/reasonable range—no gaming, light graphics—decent OS, security okay?
Posted by: Nan in cool AZ at July 10, 2023 06:55 AM (053ci) ---- HP often has great specials. Twice I have bought 17" laptops for under $350. HP.COM and not from dealers. Windows 11 Home installed but you can always do Linux. Posted by: Ciampino at July 10, 2023 08:55 AM (qfLjt) 253

"Richard Kadrey's Sandman Slim novels were quite good until the donut chick showed up and the series dived headfirst into woke bullshit. Much preferred his previous squeeze who merely ate people."

Reading a novel where some idiot uses plural pronouns and everybody goes along with it is like trying to walk through a dark room barefoot with Legos all over the floor. >But it's not designed to survive the fire - or the water; it's designed to keep your disks alive
I once bought a backup tape storage box that was designed such that in the event of heat high enough to damage the tapes, the resin shell was designed to melt and form a watertight seal around the interior on the assumption that firehoses were not far behind.
