Is the Collapse of Disney Something?

The media is still spinning like a top for their favorite Groomer Entertainment Corporation:

On the bright side for Independence Day bomb Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, its first five days at the box office of $82 million aren't as bad as Paramount/Skydance's Terminator Genisys.

That sequel's launch just prior to July 4, 2015 left a lot of methane in the air with $42.4M in its Wednesday-to-Sunday total. The attempted Arnold Schwarzenegger comeback movie ended its domestic run at $89.7M; Dial of Destiny will cross that mark before its first week is up.

Oh well, if it beat Terminator: Genisys, a movie so awful it doesn't know how to spell its own name, it's doing pretty well, really.

Comparing July 4th tentpole hits and bombs can be tricky. Since the holiday skips around -- sometimes studios launch on a Wednesday and sometimes a Friday -- for box office fanatics, everything is apples-to-oranges. The last time July 4th fell on a Tuesday was 2017 and 2006. In 2017, over the Friday-Tuesday frame, Illumination/Universal's Despicable Me 3 led with $99M, followed by Sony/MRC's Baby Driver with $29.97M.

With the $300M+ costing Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny tanking this weekend, it's as though box office history is repeating itself. Back in 2006 over July 4th, there was another expensive, highly anticipated franchise sequel attempt that was also rejected by fans with a B+ CinemaScore: Warner Bros/DC's Superman Returns, from Bryan Singer. The pic cost well in excess of $220M after endless stories of a runaway budget and Singer re-creating corn-filled Smallville, Kansas in Australia. Like Superman Returns, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny clocked in at a way-too-long 2 hours and 34 minutes, thus delivering fewer showtimes for exhibitors (and studio) to gross more.

...

For you see, July 4th is a prime launchpad for studios to take their best shot with a questionable franchise tentpole and milk as much money as possible. If it doesn't look like you're going to post some sort of record over three days, go for the 4-day, 5-day, 6-day or 7-day stretch that Independence Day offers. Warners took advantage of that opportunity with Superman Returns, minting a $108M seven-day opening. It's a figure Dial of Destiny won't even touch.

Indiana Jones opened in the UK with a clear field -- no tentpole movies were released last week, and the ones left over from previous weeks were either bombs (The Flash, Elemental) or entering their second month of release (Spider-Man: Across the Universe).

But that didn't stop industry shill Variety for crowing about Indiana Jones' amazing performance in the UK:

varietyspins.jpg

At WDW_Pro, Jonas J. Campbell reported that there is an "emergency meeting" taking place at Disney today. People who were on vacation this week were given 12 hours to get back home for this meeting.

The meeting, he reports, was called by Alan Bergman, the co-chair of Disney Entertainment, which oversees all of Disney's six movie studios. The other co-chair, Dana Walden, is a defender of Kathleen Kennedy, and was not summoned to the meeting. (Though she might show up.)

This follows rumors that "Five Horsemen of the Apocalypse" from Disney's Burbank HQ showed up at Lucasfilm to inspect its financial records just after the movie's Thursday night premiere (and failure).

Does this mean Kathleen Kennedy will be fired? Probably not. She only has one year left on her contract; Disney will probably just let her serve that out as a figurehead.

But the people who definitely may be fired are Kathleen Kennedy's leftwing employees, like the idiots of the LucasFilm story group who have produced one woke disaster after another. They infamously filmed themselves brainstorming ideas for what every Star Wars fan would want to see in their new "High Republic" era; they decided what Star Wars fans really wanted was "diversity," "dinosaurs," and "diversity." Yes, diversity, the grift so nice they named it twice.

Many Lucasfilm critics point out that firing Kathleen Kennedy accomplishes nothing because she has the whole place staffed with her Force is Female loyalists. But this may be an opportunity to fire most of these people. Lucasfilm has nothing left to destroy anyway, and Disney is not going to be greenlighting any more Lucasfilm bombs anytime soon, so they might as well shutter the place and run it with a skeleton crew.

And speaking of billion-dollar evil groomer industries:

Is Sound of Freedom something? Commenters who saw it on July 4th say yes!

Dune 2:

Phil Tippet, a stop-motion animator who worked on the Star Wars movies, made Mad God on his own, a few frames at a time, for ten years. It's already on pay per view, and is on Shudder, if you have that.

Meg 2 knows exactly what kind of movie it is. skip to here to see what kind of movie that is, or watch the full trailer.

Regarding Mission: Impossible, I earlier said that, based on the trailers, the plot seemed to be about an AI which was controlling information and either spreading "misinformation" or falsely branding the truth as "misinformation."

Chris Gore saw the film, and confirms that is in fact the plot. Everyone I've seen who saw it says it's really good, though there is a little disappointment that, being a Part 1 of a two-part story, it doesn't fully conclude the story. (That is, the AI remains in charge of the world's information at the end.) I've heard people say it's almost but not quite as good as Mission: Impossible 5 (Rogue Nation) and 6 (Fallout). Those were really good, and 5 is my favorite of the series, so being almost as good as those is a positive thing. Obviously it would be more positive if it were better than those, but, again, this is only Part 1 of the two-movie "Dead Reckoning" story.

They also say that Haley Atwell is great in it. She plays a female trickster type character who is in opposition to Tom Cruise, though not an actual villain. So kind of like the Phloebag character except not stupid and girlbossy.

And also she's one of the hottest women alive, so.

7 But the cruises are still afloat. Why would Disney worry about a billion dollars in losses from their movies?

They have positive gross profit! Sure, net profit is significantly lower and they've been having massive shakeups at the highest levels of management, but that's what healthy companies do.

Paul told me.

This whole thing is more or less a fiction. Independence Day is not a major movie-going holiday. It's a cookout and fireworks holiday. Independence Day isn't a huge movie draw.

This line of speculation is a lot more about crafting a narrative about how this bomb isn't as bad as it looks.

15 Afternoon.

Huh. Apparently they're releasing a Star Trek: Picard Legacy Blu-ray box set that includes all seven seasons of TNG, the four TNG movies and all three seasons of Picard four about $245 bucks. Also includes a book, Star Trek badge fridge magnets, coasters and playing cards.

I have to admit it's a nice looking package and the per season cost is rather low.

Yup. If Bergman is making a power play, he's going to win or be out on his ass toot sweet. He's taking a run at the king (well, queen, in this case). Walden's name is often bandied about in speculation about who will replace Iger.

59 Sadly, the headline of this column (or "word hole," as JTM recommends) is incredibly optimistic. Disney is nowhere near collapse. No, the company can't keep hemorrhaging billions without limit, but it is nowhere near bankruptcy.

But it is now at an inflection point where things *have* to change. And change is going to be hard to come by so long as the architect of the current conditions - Bob Iger - is still there.

Disney has long since stopped being the "House that Walt Built." It's the "House that Bob Built" now, and nobody can pick up the pieces until he's out for good and the new guy has a clear mandate to clean up the shop.

Jeez, minus the tranny that could actually be a good movie. An old action man guy that has to help solve problems, but he's old and has to be helped around everywhere, loaded into cars, etc., and the team realizes that normal people can do what's needed, too, and the lesson is there's nothing really special involved in saving the world other than being in the right place at the right time for the movie to progress and getting lucky in the right ways when the movie needs the hero to succeed.

71 59 Sadly, the headline of this column (or "word hole," as JTM recommends) is incredibly optimistic.

82 I Saw Sound of Freedom on 7/4. It's hard to drum up suspense for a movie you KNOW is going to end happily. It's a terrific story (except for the guy ? leaving his wife and kids to Rambo off to Colombia to rescue 2 Guatemalan tykes he doesn't know) And the wife goes along. Hmmph. 'When God asks you you don't hesitate' I guess.

It's nice that the baddies get arrested and kids get rescued, and the 'special announcement' countdown over the final credits is kind of cute. Then Jim Caviezel comes on to hawk 'Sound' as the start of a groundswell movement to defeat child trafficking. A noble cause.

The screen then tells us that there are a million children in sex slavery worldwide -- Can this be true ???

103 @7: "Why would Disney worry about a billion dollars in losses from their movies?"

My take on Disney is that all of the current disappointment and chaos is a leading indicator that won't truly affect the bottom line for another ten or twenty years.

Dial of Destiny did as "well" as it did at the box office 'cause there are still a bunch of middle aged parents taking their kids to an old movie franchise they want to share together.

I have a hard time imagining that current kids and teenagers will wanna spend their future adult dollars on parks and cruises based off the media we've seen in the last few years.

Successful (hugely popular) multi-generational mass media from one company is probably an exception, not a rule.

107 Had a crazy idea last night. If I were head of Disney, I'd demand five new action hero movies with four or five new main action characters budgeted at about 60M each and limited to 100 minutes in length (no more).

- A younger male action lead in the Chris Pratt vein, to play an everyman type forced into a 'Die Hard' type situation.

- A charismatic, younger Iblis-Elba-type playing a wealthy playboy with a double-life as an Equalizer-type vigilante.

- A younger Jet Li type playing a James Bond like superspy.

- An 'Enemy of the State' type thriller about a female Government agent who discovers the agency she works for has been covering up for the wealthy and powerful.

Give the projects to cheaper, more talented writers and directors and see if any of them stick.

Yup. They're laying a ton of groundwork for future trouble.

Losing a billion dollars per year at the box office is rough. Losing a billion dollars per quarter on D+ is rough. Declining merchandising is rough. Declining parks attendance is rough.

But the box office - that is, the movies - feeds everything downstream of it. Having *no* hits for years spells trouble for the streaming service immediately, for the merchandising in the near term, and for the parks in the long term. There's nothing to feed the machinery that brings in large amounts of money over long periods of time.

The one sure thing that they could have done to huge profits is the one thing that Lucas apparently insisted was verboten during the LucasFilm sale.

A high def remaster/release of the original trilogy theatrical versions.

Which makes me think grand conspiracy. Lucas sells to Disney but forbids a remaster/rerelease of the theatrical versions. Also insists on KK as head of LucasFilm at Disney. KK utterly sabotages LucasFilm, which Lucas buys back for pennies on the dollar. Lucas now does the remaster/rerelease to massive profits.

The only problem with that theory is that KK was entirely too enthusiastic with her sabotage.

I remember seeing that a few years ago. The only reason dinosaurs made that list is because the only other movie franchise they could remember in those smooth brains of theirs was the Jurassic Park movies. 178 When the media and government started telling me PizzaGate was a powerful example of the dangers of misinformation, I immediately knew then that Hollywood, Wall Street and the federal government traffic children for sexual perversion.

As movies like Sound of Freedom start shining the spotlight on the cockroaches you can see the pedos that run the world starting to get twitchy.

President Trump deserves a lot of credit for making it a priority and Governor DeSantis I believe has approved the death penalty for child rapists.

In response the UN started floating the proposition that sex with little kids can be consensual. and then AP, Snopes and others started running their "The UN didn't really say that" stuff, which when read reveals that they did, in fact, say that. They played the "it's false because your small brain is understanding it wrong" fact-check.

I hope all the child-diddlers and profiteers meet their end in cruel and unusual ways.

And that is great! It made money for an entire industry for a very long time, and seems to be a pretty solid business plan.

Is it the temptation to be special that drove Hollywood into the ground? Or is it the encroachment of leftists, who are humorless scolds in every single part of their miserable lives?

Yeah, very, very few writers can make a multiverse storyline work. Zelazny does it well in his Amber series. Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter also make it work in their "Long Earth" series. And Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion series is a category unto itself.

But all of those guys are exceptionally talented writers. Hollywood hacks have no idea what they are doing.

I mentioned this in the overnight thread when someone talked of Indy bombing, but it would be good for the industry to get away from this bi-weekly mega movie release schedule. It used to be a big event, maybe once or twice a year, to see these big movies, but the way things have been for the last decade it makes each movie feel like just another release.

For people working in the industry it'd also be a lot better to go back to making more mid 8 figure films that are staffed by real crew members, and not 10,000 cgi artist in Pakistan or south Korea.

It requires rules and no free rides. Zelazny - which I never considered a "multiverse," though I suppose it fits the bill - was very strict about the rules. Who could do what, how it worked, what the consequences were, etc. And he was clear that there were no free lunches - that what happened in one realm could affect another, and what happened in the home realm could affect them all.

You have to have strict rules, and enforce them.

I did, as part of my one-woman pop culture literacy project, having never seen a single Indiana Jones movie before, if one can believe such virgins exist.

Even to my virgin eyes, the sin was that the movie was even made. They drag this formerly virile, optimistic, fun-loving hero out of the comforting oblivion of Happily Ever After for one last go-round and then drop him off at death's door and wish him luck.

That said, I didn't think it was nearly as bad as some of the hate reviews. The "tranny" was average girl who needed help from her friends, wanted things she couldn't have, relied on Indy occasionally to figure out a puzzle, and changed in the end.

I'm still typing away and hitting the character limit, so I'll let it go at that.

Yep. Most authors who dabble in multiversal plots will do their best to establish a set of ground rules, so that when those rules are violated (usually via a loophole somewhere), there is a very steep price to be paid.

When there are no rules, there are no stakes. The audience is no longer invested in the outcome.

Which will still not be as good as Triangle.

Not only would you have to travel hundreds, millions and even billions of miles, you have to match the speed and location.

And everyone knows that the day the earth stood still in the Bible is when Venus, a former rouge planet, was finally fully captured into the solar system causing the Earth to reverse rotation and Venus to almost lose all rotation velocity and rotate in the opposite direction.
(An earlier pass by the Earth was the cause of the Flood as all the water from Venus was dumped on the Earth)

He gets hung, turns out he had freed his hands tied behind his back with a sharp object so he manages to grab the rope around his neck and not strangle, then the rope snaps, something else happens, blah blah I can't remember, but he gets that rope off his neck. Typical action scene.

415 On the bright side for Independence Day bomb Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, its first five days at the box office of $82 million aren't as bad as Paramount/Skydance's Terminator Genisys.

*holding sides from laughing too hard*

Indy V cost like $350 million to make. Terminator Genesys cost $155 to make. If Indy doesn't make at least $600 million, its a flat out loss. The Terminator movie made over $400, so it actually earned money.

How anyone considered that a Schwarzenegger "comeback" movie is anybody's guess.

In ETEX we have been aware of human trafficking a long time. In 06 I saw discarded a girl's clothing strewn on our side of the Rio Grande. 15 feet away under some bushes was a pile of girl's clothing same size. That was one girl who did not connect with family or friends, who left the neatly folded clothes, but was instead probably kept by the coyote's for their own reasons. Sound of Freedom is what that one instance grew into. Human trafficking is at least as big as drug trafficking, it's worldwide and run by specialists.

Gosh, what are the odds?

Also Forrest Gump was a redeeming story of humanity and not a sick horror movie about divine wrath and the torture of the mentally ill that, had it been made in Korea, we would be discussing completely differently.
Posted by: The recovered remains of Hitler's cocaine filled flying submarine at July 05, 2023 04:24 PM (33ek6)

Uhhh, actually it IS a horror film. The evil succubus Jenny keeps popping up in Forrest's life every time that things seem to be going well for him, only to tear him down and leave him devastated. Until her final vicious act of showing up with a kid, and giving Forrest a deadly disease before dying herself and leaving Forrest with the task of raising the kid for the next 12 years or so.

The last look of horror on his face in the final scene clinches it. That's not a look of serene redemption, it's utter terror.

Very reassuring that at the very top of our government with every resource available, where money is no object, they "can't" solve this complex crime that every beat cop and drug sniffing dog in America does on a daily basis. They have truly exceeded my expectations.

Its okay though, she gives him AIDS and dies leaving him with the kid.

...wait.

Its just Boomer nostalgia nonsense, it was entertaining enough but nothing I want to own on DVD, which is my standard. Gary Sinese stole every scene he was in.

655 I just love the idea of "Star Wars" and "diversity".

They have fucking alien species and robots. How much more diverse can you get? What race was Yoda, exactly?

Both the original and prequel trilogies had plenty of people of other races, so what the hell are they even talking about? It is, and has been, a non-issue.

656 I enjoyed Jedi Survivor, but it is one of the few story driven games where I just stopped talking to the ambiance characters. So many of them were just so 'bowl of message'. Even the ones that started out interesting ended up wandering off into message push, that it wasn't worth seeing them get ruined.

It was overall a good game with a lot of fun gameplay, and I overall enjoyed it, but I'm not so certain about what comes next in that series.
