The Latest Kathleen Kennedy Self-Insert Fanfic Vehicle Phloebiana Jones A "Disaster" with $60 Million Opening
Even though Disney/Lucasfilm's Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is looking to hit the bottom rung of its tracking projection of $60M Sunday morning, there's no question this is a disastrous result for the finale to a historically beloved franchise film. C'mon, Indiana Jones is one of the reasons why Disney shelled out $4 billion for Lucasfilm. Global start here at $130M, is $10M less than what we were seeing; Nancy will have more. The fan-loathed Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull had a $272.1M global start, unadjusted for inflation/currency swings back in 2008. A few things to stomach: Not only did Star Wars bomb Solo open higher than Dial of Destiny, with $84.4M 3-day/$103M 4-day, but so did Paramount's seventhquel Transformers: Rise of the Beasts ($61M). How could Disney and Lucasfilm mess this up?One shill site reported that the film's opening was $160 million-- but then clarified that this was a projection of the five day box office, through the Fourth of July. Sounds like someone at Disney really wants the public to think this is making more money than it is. This is interesting:
P&A -- prints and advertising, or "marketing" -- is usually budgeted at one half the cost of producing a movie. If this film cost $329 million, the usual P&A budget would be around $165 million. But they only allocated $100 million for this. Valliant Renegade speculates that after the terrible Cannes debut, Disney's top executives decided to save money on advertising because they knew they had a dud on their hands. That would also explain the rumored war in the Disney c-suite, with some blaming Kathleen Kennedy for producing yet another huge-budgeted bomb, and others claiming it's all the fault of "the marketing." Valliant Renegade -- or maybe it was WDW_ Pro -- also wondered why the Cannes reviewers had been allowed to post their reviews the following day. Why was there no embargo period, say delaying the reviews until just before the release? Could it be that someone lifted the review embargo so that he could make the case that this was another Kathleen Kennedy turd, to give him a good argument for cutting the marketing costs? It is being estimated that this film will lose $250 million dollars. Even with the reduced ad buy, it will still have to make $800-850 million just to break even, which it will of course not do. (Usually blockbuster movies make 2.5x or at most 3x their opening box office. "Blockbusters" with poor word of mouth, as Phloebiana Jones has, won't even make that much.) And Phoebiana Jones only has a clear field for nine more days -- Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning opens July 12, and is getting huge buzz.
Yesterday, I learned from a key source that Indiana Jones and the Dial Destiny, before $100M in estimated P&A, cost a mindboggling $300M-plus. Much higher than the $250M-$295M that's been leaked out there. Disney doesn't comment on budgets, and I'm getting some pushback.
This movie is on track to lose more money than They/Them Flash. Speaking of, They/Them Flash suffered one of the worst second-weekend drops of all time. And that's after a low opening.
Flash did so poorly in its second weekend that it was fighting Jennifer Lawrence's teen sex comedy No Hard Feelings for third place. In its third weekend, it suffered another huge drop,falling 67% from its second week box office, which had just fallen 73% from its low opening weekend. They/Them Flash has been dropped from 1500 theaters and has been fast-tracked to pay-per-view. It will be available for PPV streaming only a month after its opening. Just ten days into the film's release, the studio was offering what are essentially Bargain Matinee prices to see their Woke Bomb --you can now get two tickets for the price of one to see They/Them Flash.
In its first weekend, The Flash won the domestic box office, though it did so in less-than-stellar fashion, failing to hit the numbers previously predicted for the big superhero movie. Still, if The Flash had continued to put up solid numbers in the following weeks, all would not be lost. Unfortunately, it looks like all is, probably, lost, as The Flash's $15 million domestic box office from this past weekend is a 73% decline from last weekend, which is one of the most significant drops we've seen from a major tentpole release. ... What makes The Flash's 73% drop even more significant since it's a big fall from a number that wasn't that high to begin with. The Flash's 73% drop, is bigger than that of the much-maligned Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which saw a 69% drop from an opening weekend of $166 million.

A temporary harassment order issued against The Flash star Ezra Miller in Massachusetts after mother of a 12-year-old accused Miller of acting inappropriately around her child was lifted Friday after a court hearing. The mother, Shannon Guin, accused the Fantastic Beasts star of menacing her family and acting inappropriately toward her nonbinary child in a story that appeared last summer in the Daily Beast. No criminal charges were ever filed. Miller's attorney said all of the actor's encounters with the child were initiated by the mother. The attorney, Marissa Elkins, said Miller was "never alone with the child and never interacted with the child outside of two brief encounters which occurred in the presence of several other adults."I think someone should produce a romcom starring Ezra Miller and Phleobag. The pure chemistry between these two would be incendiary. Woke productions just keep losing Hollywood money, but they keep cranking them out. Just what I was looking for in a nostalgia-bait high school musical. Well, Warner Bros. has figured out a way to avoid the next Flash-level disaster -- take humans out of the decision-making process and let AI choose which films to greenlight.
The proposed "Batgirl" film, reported to be similarly woke, also got shelved before it could even grace then-HBO Max. The Mouse House erased "Willow," in part, to save cash. Now, that doomed series has some heady company. Paramount+ just pulled the plug on "Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies." The prequel series to the 1978 musical is no more after a single season, but the news is even more grim for its microscopic fan base. The streamer is yanking the existing episodes from its content library and may sell it to a competing streamer. The company will take a content impairment charge and is expected to reveal the financial impact at its next earnings. So ... how woke was "Rise of the Pink Ladies?" The Daily Mail offered a sneak peek at the film's messaging before its debut. "Family favorite tunes will be re-sung alongside new musical numbers including one about white supremacy, while the 1950s student population at Rydell High School will be re-filled with a varied mix of LGBT and black high schoolers unseen in the 1978 hit." Early reviews confirmed that progressive branding. The trailer all but screamed this message, underscoring it with its diverse cast and feminist themes. The series also took the source material to task, according to show runner Annabel Oakes. "Yeah, there are some lyrics that are problematic. As you see, we reference those in the pilot and other dialogue. You'll see us start to reference ... to try to open up the world of 'Grease' and the lens of 'Grease' through taking a deeper look at those and getting other people's perspectives."

Warner Bros. has put the peddle to the metal in the Hollywood artificial intelligence race by signing a deal to implement an AI-driven project management system. The Warner Bros. movie division signed the deal with the company Cinelytic and will reportedly "leverage the system's comprehensive data and predictive analytics to guide decision-making at the greenlight stage," according to The Hollywood Reporter (THR). The platform reportedly "can assess the value of a star in any territory and how much a film is expected to make in theaters and on other ancillary streams." ... While the platform won't necessarily predict what will be the next $1 billion surprise, like Warners' hit Joker, it will reduce the amount of time executives spend on low-value, repetitive tasks and instead give them better dollar-figure parameters for packaging, marketing and distribution decisions, including release dates. The AI system could also function as a risk-management strategy by helping the studio avoid spending big money on projects that would perform poorly with audiences.
Analysis: Last weekend was the worst summer weekend since the summer blockbuster was invented in 1975 by Jaws.

My bet is that Disney won't release the actuals until Wednesday, and they will include the total through Independence Day.
But $60 million was the heavily-revised, rock-bottom estimate. If it failed to even achieve that, then the skeptics will have been shown to have been right.

If you're cutting the P&A budget, then you are morally certain that you have a straight up megaton bomb on your hands.
If you invest that much to make a movie like this, and you're concerned about the product quality, you do a full-court press on marketing. Put the asses in the seats.
When they just say "f it, pull the plug," you know that movie isn't just bad - it's godawful. Steaming pile of reeking garbage.

This is something most of the press got wrong, because the press doesn't have any understanding of time or math. This movie was made in the UK, so currency conversion is involved. During a lot of this movie's production, the Pound Sterling was more valuable than it was at the end of the production.
I've heard estimates of everything from $315 million to $325 million. As of December 31 of 2022 (based on UK tax forms) - so before any final reshoots, new music, VFX, etc. This turkey probably cost closer to $350 million, but the film industry tax credits might crank it back down into $320s.

The only reason people look forward to a Filoni and Favreau run LucasArts is because of the first season of The Mandalorian. Everything else has kind of sucked.

This is a very old number calculation that no longer applies for two reasons:
There are NO PRINT COSTS anymore. All movies are distributed digitally via satellite. It is no more expensive to open a film in 5,000 theaters as it is in five.
Secondly, the "about half" number made sense only when even the most expensive films rarely crossed the 125 million line. There is a diminishing return on advertising. Just because a movie cost 500 million doesn't mean you must sink 250 million just to promote it. That's nonsense.

Yup. Quick back of the envelope, assuming that the $60 million domestic $130 million international is accurate *and* that this movie performs more or less like a Marvel movie, and pulls in 2.5x over the course of its run:
- $150 million domestic box and $175 million foreign box; $325 million gross
- About $83 million revenue to DIS from the domestic box, about $78 million from the foreign box; about $161 million net
- $425 million spent (production + distribution)
- $264 million lost on the movie
A quarter billion dollars. Poof. Gone. It will push Disney to over a billion dollars in box office losses over the past year and it is only going to get worse with Haunted Mansion and The Marvels.

I get the impression they've been forced, likely by legal means, to not trash Lucasfilm product. They can tease and joke and criticize, but they seem to feel the need to say "it was alright, I enjoyed this or that..."
Then proceed to undermine their initial reaction, and finally tell their viewers not to bother watching in theater.
They hated it, but can't say it. You can tell when half the time Mike is rewriting the entire film on the spot, while they're talking.

Unless, of course, Indy has great word-of-mouth and legs out way better than 2.5x. It doesn't have that great word-of-mouth, though. Among reviewers I like and people I know in real life, the review spectrum starts at "it was lame. 4 out of 10. Don't bother," and it ends at, "this movie was an abject disaster that is a scar on human history. 0 out of 10. Open a vein first."

Nah. I doubt they take money from anyone. They've had Len Kavasinski on their show after mercilessly making fun of the guy's awful films.
I think they were kind of meh on the film, buoyed by their reaction to the reportedly bonkers ending, and then the more they talked about it, the more they saw through their relative emotional high.
It's kind of the danger of talking about something like this right after you see it. You haven't had the time to process it, which they were obviously doing as they talked about it.

Warner Bros. has put the peddle to the metal in the Hollywood artificial intelligence race by signing a deal to implement an AI-driven project management system.
The Warner Bros. movie division signed the deal with the company Cinelytic and will reportedly "leverage the system's comprehensive data and predictive analytics to guide decision-making at the greenlight stage," according to The Hollywood Reporter (THR).

That is going to be a point of furious negotiation, I'm sure. Disney doesn't have that kind of money and would probably *much* rather haul some stock out of the vault (the company does own a lot of its own shares) rather than sell off divisions or issue gigantic amounts of debt to deal with the problem.

I won't defend Dave Filloni, he's a hack fraud 'male feminist' with all the meaning I can put in that phrase.
But Favreau understands character. He made Swingers, Elf, Chef in addition to maybe the best Marvel movie, Iron Man. Half of Cowboys vs Aliens was good, I suspect there were shenanigans around there.
The guy I've lost faith in is Kevin Feige.

I think they were kind of meh on the film, buoyed by their reaction to the reportedly bonkers ending, and then the more they talked about it, the more they saw through their relative emotional high.
It's kind of the danger of talking about something like this right after you see it. You haven't had the time to process it, which they were obviously doing as they talked about it.

Kennedy has been at the helm of Lucasfilm for a decade. You can be sure that every single executive, director and senior manager is a knee-jerk fellow traveler. I would bet real money that the well at Lucasfilm is completely poisoned at this point.
They don't need to replace Kennedy, they probably need to purge the entire organization from the top all the way down.

That's honestly possible. Rumors are that Kennedy and her cadre really think they're making masterpieces. There were no test screenings for the film outside of "friends and family" screenings on the Disney lot. They may have come out of those expecting the best results, taking it to Cannes (seriously...don't take action/adventure movies to Cannes unless you are someone like Tarantino or Scorsese, James Mangold ain't gonna cut it with those film snobs), and then getting steamrolled by the revelation of the mediocrity.

Spielberg left out the screenwriter, Lawrence Kasdan.
He (and many others) gave no credit to Thomas Keneally who wrote the original book Schindler's List (aka Schindler's Ark). The movie is essentially shot-for-shot from the book, even down to the Little Girl in the Red Coat. Spielberg added the ending

Literally. The Oscars have quotas requiring a certain minimum level of "minorities" in your cast and crew in order to even be considered for an Oscar now.
What is truly hilarious is that there are no definitions of minority for foreign movies. So if you make a movie in India with all Indian actors and crew, you're treated as if you had a huge minority presence, since the qutoas are based on US population.

The interior needs a bit of correction. The complex little torpedo director that was beside the telescopic sight is missing. Those two wheels on the fuselage side in the pilot and bomb aimer compartments need to be moved forward and a handle added. The four levers on the pilot's right console need to be replaced by trigger handles. The A4 oxygen bottle in the bomb aimer's compartment is missing the pressure gauge. The gunner's compartment is missing all the radio equipment and where that little black box and fire extinguisher on the floor is, there should be four small bomb things. Plus like the SBD, from photos, it seems the gunner has foot stirrups but neither Monogram or GWH had them either.

I'm straight, white, and male. I lost getting some good jobs due to Affirmative Action. I have no complaints. I understood the need to hire someone else. Our nation works better with a diversified work force. Our society is kinder, our communities are safer, our potential to grow as a people moving forward together is best realized through affirmative action, when otherwise a legacy of inequality would continue to be passed on from one generation to the next.
I got other good job opportunities. After all, I was a straight white male.
I'm afraid corporate DEI programs will be next on the chopping block, to head off backlash from the rabble. They're good for the company culture and good for business as well.
Our university just sent an email. DEI is dead. It's just horrible.
Lots of DEI programs here in California, where affirmative action is illegal. Corporations have found work arounds.

No, it sucked, and was painful to watch…
To me it was the first "cringe humor" movie. I think you were supposed to enjoy being "mean girl" and laughing at all these pathetic loser people. Akin to the Game of Thrones action idea where nearly all the characters seen as decent lose and get killed by the loathsome ones. A way of thinking that doesn't get me to see the works.

Uncle Rico was friggin' awesome. Jon Gries is a terribly underrated actor.

The opening weeks, for some movies, Disney collects 90% of the take instead of standard 50%.
So what Disney does is they buy up tickets. Spend $100 million to buy tickets, and it really only costs 10 million in your marketing, while your box office doesn't look that bad, and more people will go to theaters to see this hit movie.
