Studies Show that Depression, Self-Isolation Are On the Rise
But Not for Us: For Us, There Are Only GAINZZZ

The kids aren't all right:

In 2021, suicide and homicide rates for children and young adults ages 10 to 24 in the US were the highest they've been in decades, according to a new report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Suicide and homicide were the second and third leading causes of death for this age group, both causing about 11 deaths for every 100,000 people ages 10 to 24. The homicide rate for this age group in 2021 was the highest it's been since 1997, and the suicide rate was the highest on record, since 1968.

Suicide rates surpassed homicide rates for this age group in 2010 and have continued rising for the past decade. But a large spike in homicide rates during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic brought the rates for both types of violent death together for the first time in a decade.

For children ages 10 to 14, however, a large gap remained. The suicide rate in 2021 was twice as high as the homicide rate, according to the CDC report.

...

Another CDC report said that the rate of suspected suicides and suicide attempts by poisoning among young surged during the Covid-19 pandemic, especially among children ages 10 to 12, with a 70% increase from 2019 to 2021.

For teens ages 15 to 19, the homicide rate remained higher than the suicide rate, according to the new report.

A lot of the depression is due to previous trends being exacerbated by Fauci's Lockdowns.

But the trend was already there. It started about the same time as smartphones became widespread.

Fewer teens are having sex or doing drugs, but more are depressed.

Fewer high school students are having sex than ever before, federal health officials reported Thursday. And they're also less likely than some earlier generations to abuse drugs, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's annual survey on teen behavior finds.

But kids report that bullying at school is common and a third of students report persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness, the report finds.

I would say the "having sex later and being less likely to abuse drugs" would be an unmitigated good... if that came from a healthy place, like a renewed spirit of moral restraint.

But what if that's due to the same phenomenon causing the depression? What if kids are having less sex not because they're more moral, but simply more despairing?

Or are simply... lower in testosterone?

US men are now more likely to be "self-isolated."

In Japan, an estimated 1.5 million people -- many of them young men -- now live in complete isolation.

The problem has grown so severe that the Japanese have a term for it: Hikikomori, one who literally withdraws from society.

Some 6,000 miles away, the United States is experiencing its own form of hikikomori.

During a recent interview with Chris Williamson, a British podcaster based in Austin, Texas, the political economist Nicholas Eberstadt discussed the fact that 7 million men of prime working age are currently without employment and not seeking jobs.

Many of these men, said Eberstadt, spend inordinate amounts of time indoors, totally withdrawn from society.

They play video games, watch pornography, and tend to engage in heavy drug use, according to the author of "Men Without Work."

Work carried out by academics at Kyushu University in Japan has found that a low testosterone level is one of the common metabolic signatures of hikikomori in young social recluses -- which is important to note because testosterone levels among young American men are plummeting and have been for years.

The drop now reportedly affects 1 in 4 men in the US.

It's commonly assumed that testosterone fuels anti-social behavior.

In December, "Avatar" director James Cameron made headlines when he claimed that testosterone is "a toxin" that needs to be worked out of one's system.

Last month, NPR discussed the association between "toxic masculinity" and testosterone.

But this belief is not supported by science: There is no strong evidence to suggest that men with higher levels of testosterone are overly aggressive or violent.

On the contrary, testosterone has been linked to more social behavior in males -- while low testosterone levels in males are associated with social anxiety and socially submissive or avoidant behaviors.

People with social anxiety are at an increased risk of developing depression (moreover, according to the Cleveland Clinic, low testosterone levels often mimic symptoms of depression).

Research carried out by Dr. David Terburg, an expert in human behavior, has shown the many ways in which testosterone improves both individual behavior and broader cooperation.

In one study, Terburg and his colleagues identified a clear association between the administration of testosterone and increased levels of social cooperation and better moral judgment.

Low testosterone -- otherwise known as hypogonadism -- meanwhile, was associated with brain fog, poor memory and focus, and an overall lack of mental clarity.

Men lacking testosterone are also at an increased risk of developing noticeably larger breasts, a condition known as gynecomastia.

Research carried out last year by scientists at Emory University identified the ways in which testosterone influences the hypothalamus, the part of the brain responsible for the creation of oxytocin -- the so-called "love hormone" which also mediates the risk of social withdrawal and rises in tandem with testosterone.

...

His research has also shown that testosterone stimulates the growth of brain-derived neurotrophic factors. BDNF plays a vital role in memory recall, learning, and decision-making.

"Social isolation and other stressors," noted Dr. Spritzer, "cause adult neurogenesis to decrease, and we found that testosterone can help reverse the negative effects of social isolation on the brain."

So what's the cure for all of this?

That's right: Getting outdoors, and getting some GAINZZZ.

The below video is good. It's by a Tolkein YouTuber, who notes that the Lord of the Rings (and the Hobbit before it) are basically just stories about really long walks.

Bilbo (I think) said:

"It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to."

She talks about Tolkein loving a ramble in the countryside because in his youth his parents had moved to a more urban area, and he missed seeing the trees and the paths through them. And how many people champion walking not just for its physical benefits, but for giving someone time to just think and even commune with God.

There's a global outbreak of cat doing sit-ups. Scroll down -- cats are improvising outdoor gym equipment wherever they can to work on their core.

So do you have any GAINZZZ to report? Or PROJEXXX you want to share?

Or even SHOWZZZ?

In the meantime, I'm trying to follow the advice of this fitness podcaster. Warning: TikTok.

At some point perhaps I will do some long winding hikes around here once again. I recommend Palo Duro Canyon and Caprock Canyons State Park highly for that. I once hiked a good 10-15 miles at Caprock Canyons, having spent two nights camped at an isolated portion of the park. Good times.

This means I lost about 18 pounds ... hurray. just doing OMAD 8one meal a day) and maybe a butter/peanutButter tablespoon. Then vodka in flavored sparkling water and some milk and chocolate. Three of those in the evening ... and yet, I lose weight. BP still kinda high though ... but don't want medication.

Isolation and loneliness are different things. It has to do with the expectations of the situation you are in. I never feel lonely in the woods, it is often easy to feel lonely at parties or in bars crushed in cheek to jowl.

You make the point I was going to ace. Dudes are supposed to want to have sex. They figure out what they need to do or be in order to get the gal. That used to be growing the hell up. But it wasn't a desolation of the spirit.

For all of the sex and nudity of the modern era, there is an emptiness to it all. I remember the clip of Cyd Charisse and Fred Astaire ... Kallisto(?) linked here. There was more sensuality and sex appeal in the look she gives him. In the way she stands. Opens her coat. Damn, she was smoky.

That's missing now. There is emptiness and unfulfillment because there is no connection. The dude goes back to his phone and she goes back to hers. They are strangers who shared a brief contact at the groin. And that's it.

Sharon, what CBD said. Use a good quality arm cuff, not wrist, and proper technique.

If it remains elevated at home and you want confirmation your doc may be able to order an 'ambulatory BP monitor' which you wear around and get a large amount of data that correlates with activity, time of day, diet etc.

Or, tap off a pint of blood once a week. Usually works.

At well north of 2 X 29 years of age my T level is fine - around a healthy 20 something male. A couple of kettle bar workouts a couple times a week and lots of strenuous hiking, I 'spose.

When my T level is good I get a lotta good shit done. When good shit gets done depression has no home here.

Hating the results of the 2020 3 am election shenanigans still has a home here.

150 So do you have any GAINZZZ to report?

--------

Why yes, thanks for asking, Lamont.

[Prelude: Got together with an old best friend from high school I hadn't seen in over 20 years. He and his wife have a severely disabled son who requires full-time care, for now 35 years. He was lamenting that he didn't have a whole lot of time to exercise as a result.]

Anyway, he turned me on to a weight training workout regimen from a book called "Body By Science" -- I found an online PDF of it at "the wayback machine. Just five exercises, only every 7 to 10 days. You do at least 10 reps as slow as possible (but smooth motions, no start/stop), ideally about 90 seconds total. By the end of your third set of each exercise, the goal is to hit the wall near the end -- and once you can no longer move the weight, still try for 10 seconds. Push your muscles beyond fatigue. It's a killer, but studies have shown that you retain strength and are less likely to injure yourself (with lighter weights and slower reps). ShainBob gives it two thumbs up and says "check it out!"

172 I meet a few nice women who are older (40s or above) who had a bad marriage and they say men don't want to date them because they are not 25 or don't look like a model, so evidently unless your standards are really too high, you're ships passing in the night .

My best advice to anyone who wants to find someone is:

Work on yourself. You're never too old to improve. Take classes, work on your fitness, re-discover your hobbies.

Put yourself out there. You're not going to find someone sitting at home or melting into the furniture in public settings. It's hard, but necessary.

Be the kind of person you want to have as your partner. If you're a bitter sourpuss, you're not going to attract a bubbly, happy person.

As to "not looking like a model," being fit at 40+ will go a long way towards being as attractive as possible.

My nurse practitioner wanted to convince me I have high BP - because of course at my age I do but I'm sure I don't. So I tracked it faithfully for a couple of weeks early in the morning. Threw out the extremely low outliers and came up with an average of about 90/70.

She then explained that BP is higher in the morning. So I'm good to go for a while. So, wait a while in the day to get a better reading, I guess. Or pop a blue pill of about 25 milligrams before taking the test. Which is cheating.

If it's clear after sunset tonight where you are (and it may not be here, dammit), another Venus show. Mars will be right above Venus, and right close to Regulus, right in Leo.

Venus is nearing maximum brightness this apparition as they call it, which will occur on July 9th. After this, it will quickly dim, disappear into the Sun in early August at inferior conjunction.

But, after it swings to the western side, it will repeat the show, this time on the morning side before sunrise. So, Venus will flip to the "Morning star" mode. Then get farther away, dim, and repeat the show in ~19 months.

I think "be yourself" is OK advice in a narrow sense. That is, don't present an image that is wildly different than who your are at that time.

Where that advice falls apart is if you take it as permission to never improve. In the medium to long term, you can change who you are in a way that's healthy and good.

The 'On!'? I like the stuff. I still want to vape (just an ingrained stress reaction) but they are great for work. Citrus is ok. Coffee (which does not taste like coffee) is pretty good. Cinnamon is horrible (irritating.) I like the product and they are always on sale here.

220 210 > Nuts. There goes "be yourself" as a strategy.

I think "be yourself" is OK advice in a narrow sense. That is, don't present an image that is wildly different than who your are at that time.

Where that advice falls apart is if you take it as permission to never improve. In the medium to long term, you can change who you are in a way that's healthy and good.

On dating, be the best version of yourself. Be fun, have fun and that will draw people. But....learning how to be charming pays dividends. It's a skill, it can be learned.

But it's also kind of tiring and a pain in the ass. And you still may end up buying a lemon.

Today's feminists have sold a lot of women a pack of lies. Don't marry in your 20s, when that's your prime childbearing years. Go on birth control, when it poisons your natural maternal chemistry. Have a high-powered career, when very few people (men or women) are suited to it. Religion is icky, when it's really a great consolation for the disappointments of life. No wonder so many are depressed and/or unhinged.
