Vermeer Maid Asleep.jpg

A Maid Asleep
Johannes Vermeer

From the Metropolitan Museum of Art's description. It's actually interesting!

The misbehavior of unsupervised maidservants was a common subject for seventeenth-century Dutch painters. Yet in his depiction of a young maid dozing next to a glass of wine, Vermeer transfigured an ordinary scene into an investigation of light, color, and texture that supersedes any moralizing lesson. While the toppled glass at left (now abraded with time) and rumpled table carpet may indicate a recently departed visitor, x-radiographs indicate that Vermeer chose to remove a male figure he had originally included standing in the doorway, heightening the painting's ambiguity.

59 There was an interesting (though somewhat disappointing) show on Amazon Prime or Netflix called something like "Tim's Vermeer" where an engineer-type recreated a Vermeer with astonishing accuracy, having little more than an interest in optics, a decent eye for color, and an inordinate amount of spare time. He had a theory about how Vermeer managed to stand out from his peers when it came to the unbelievable detail and photorealistic accuracy of his renderings. He essentially used a camera obscure and a strategically placed lens and simply, painstakingly recreated one small area at a time of what was being projected on his canvas. It was interesting to see this engineer prove out his theory, but terribly disappointing to think that this "cheat" essentially reduced a Master to a clever tinkerer.

Years ago there was a great little art essay in American Rifleman about the Rembrandt "Night Watch." It hung over the fireplace of the militia company who had commissioned it for a lifetime or two before it got famous, and then got worked over by real curators. There was all sorts of stuff (much of it firearms-related) going on in there that nobody had seen before. Several internal sources of light, and clear evidence that one guy had, an instant before, fired his gun.

I imagine it was mistaken for an Ad Reinhardt work and displayed proudly. Then a careless janitor spritzed a corner of the canvas, revealing that it was, instead, the work of a Master. Seeing the detail and beauty of the painting, the curator immediately sent it to be stored int the basement to make room for a banana duct-taped to the wall.

122 Notwithstanding Vermeer's wonderful use of color and detail (he managed to give the cloth and still life features the correct texture), the first thing that caught my eye was the maid's pose and face. It is so natural and appropriate for the scene. Her darker clothing blends with the table cloth while the white collar frames her face and makes her expression stand out from the darker background. Even the small earrings, presumably inexpensive, offer a small contrast with her skin tones.

The painting prompts me to come up with scenarios. Is she lazy? Was it a late night of serving guests that cost her sleep? Was she fighting off the attentions of people in the house?

129 Willowed from last thread:

Starlink is expensive, though. The equipment isn't all that cheap, but the service cost is fairly high as compared to equivalent speed from a cable provider. The all-in cost is usually much higher than terrestrial broadband - but you can go look at pricing and see if it makes sense for you. It doesn't for me.
Posted by: Joe Mannix

Original buy in was $500.
Monthly service is $120.00 - unlimited. Used to be they would throttle you after a terabyte. Even with both the wife and I working from home and tv in the evenings, we never went over 600 mgb.

I honestly prefer this to cable. We have Amazon, so we have that service. Paramount+. All of the freebie tv.
It beats having (and paying for) a thousand channels on cable and still not watching more than six.

Speeds of 125 to 135 mbps (or faster) down and 50 - 60 up. Only drawback is sometimes you lose service in extremely heavy thunderstorms until the cell passes over. (Less so than DirecTV)

204 I don't believe the average person has any idea how consequential the Moore v Harper decision will be. Democrats have effectively used the judiciary as their line of subversion against any change to the electoral process which is allowed to be made by legislatures according to the Constitution. They've played the timing and fact that SCOTUS is loathed to overturn any election in which the votes have been cast or certified, no matter what degree of corruption underwrites it. This means that legislatures will make constitutional changes, Democrats will challenge them and their partisans in the judiciary will work with them to ensure they are caught in a legal process that benefits them, no matter what the ultimate outcome may be. The states who have played these games are enough collectively to change the electoral college and outcome of every election in favor of Democrats. It is perhaps the worst decision a court has made since Dred Scott and will go down in the annals of history as one of the most poorly reasoned decisions ever by the court.

260 ||Earth’s tilt has changed by 31.5 inches (80 centimeters) between 1993 and 2010 because of the amount of groundwater humans have pumped from the planet’s interior.

In that period, humans removed 2,150 gigatons of water from natural reservoirs in the planet’s crust. If such an amount was poured into the global ocean, its surface would rise by 0.24 inches (6 millimeters). A new study has now revealed that displacing such an enormous amount of water has had an effect on the axis around which the planet spins.||

Here's the link to the b.s. tilt 'report'

The Internet is certainly a factor. I mean, Drudge made the Lewinsky stuff come to light when it wouldn't have two years prior. But color me skeptical. That CBS is asking the question is one thing. But they don't yet seem actually upset about Joe being testy. I have a feeling that by the time Joe gets around to admitting that yes, he did indeed talk to his son one time about business and he deeply regrets it even though it was not siginificant and has had the WH Counsel write up new ethics rules to prevent it in the future and we should just move on to let him do the work of saving the country like he does every day....that that will be that.

The “coming for your children” chant has been used for years at Pride events, according to longtime march attendees and gay rights activists, who said it’s one of many provocative expressions used to regain control of slurs against LGBTQ people.

[Twitter Note...]
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
"Coming for your children" is not a historical part of Pride. The chant appears to originate from the San Francisco Gay Men's choir singing a song with this title 2 years ago, in 2021. This article is thus a misrepresentation of Pride's history.

In the 'painting' in the upper left corner, in the bottom right corner, in shadow, is what appears to be a severed head. Depending the POV, the 'head' can be seen from the side or as a full-face presentation. Neat.
