Of Course: An Award for Outstanding Creativity In Marketing Is Given to... Anheuser-Busch

Of course. Of course.

It was pretty creative how they drove off 26% of their customer base.

Big props, ladies. Stunning and brave.

CANNES, France--Marketing gone awry recently cost Bud Light its long-held crown as America's bestselling beer.

But the brand's owner, Anheuser-Busch InBev, was here at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity--a lavish annual gathering in the south of France, often called the Oscars of the ad industry--collecting one of the event's highest honors: Creative Marketer of the Year.

A collision this spring between Bud Light's marketing hub in Manhattan and many of its loyal drinkers across middle America resulted in a case study in how not to market through the culture wars. A consumer and celebrity backlash against a Bud Light social-media promotion with the transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney snowballed into a boycott and plummeting sales. The uproar prompted AB InBev to put on leave two marketing executives who oversaw the promotion, leading to more criticism.

In the wake of that controversy, across the Atlantic on Monday, AB InBev's global chief marketing officer, Marcel Marcondes, took to the Cannes Lions' main stage to give the event's opening seminar. The session was described in programming notes as a talk in part about AB InBev's "relentless focus on connecting with consumers in meaningful ways." Marcondes also touched briefly on the Bud Light situation stateside.

"In times like this, when things get divisive and controversial so easily, I think it's an important wake-up call to all of us marketers, for us to be very humble," Marcondes said.

AB InBev is "really reminding ourselves of what we should do best every day, which is to really understand our customers, which is to really celebrate and appreciate every customer that loves our brands, but in a way that can make them be together, not apart," he said. The words echoed comments by Brendan Whitworth, chief executive of AB InBev's North American business, made immediately following the backlash in April.

...

Organizers of the festival and AB InBev weren't available Monday to comment.

Tranheuser-Busch released a new ad for Bud Light.

The secret theme seems to be... normalcy. And heterosexuality.

And lowbrow, "fratty" humor.

Uhhh, what? How on earth is this something he believes?

If someone already "loves your brand," you don't need to market to them. That job is done. You need to market to people who don't "love your brand" but are willing to try it. In no case, should you call your customers fratty knuckle-draggers who need to be jettisoned in favor of more genteel and politically-correct people. That isn't something that you do "together," it forces people apart.

It's like a glimpse into idealized cognitive dissonance.

89 Christopher Rufo: Thrown to the Wolves

That was a very interesting article - Rufo's physician information made the point that the response to Covid was a template for normalizing "transgender medical care".

Usually, medical best practices are determined by specialty medical societies, after evaluating the results of clinical studies, and frequently after considerable debate.

That went out the window with Covid - new "best practices" were simply fiated, and you could be fired if you questioned them.

The transgender doctors simply adopted that model - they simply announced that "gender affirmation surgery" was a best practice, without any clinical evidence, and went after anyone who questioned that.

Like leg infantry and regular artillery the A10 has never been sexy. So in peacetime it gets shafted - it was disfavored until Gulf War I gave it new status IIRC.

It might have a tough time in a modern war situation with drones and air defense, but one of the reasons Russia is doing well is that they kept building simple and reliable things that work as well as new toys and enough of them to make a difference.

187 More reporting from my favorite Dutch reporter -

Eva Vlaardingerbroek
@EvaVlaar
🇳🇱 Now that the totalitarian Dutch government learned they can effectively crack down on our farmers’ property rights, they’re coming after ordinary citizens next:

An insane new Housing Act will allow municipalities to force homeowners to sell their homes ONLY to people with a lower to middle income.

In other words, the government decides who you can sell your own home to and would force you to accept a lower price than the market value, because a “marginalised group” would be making an offer.

How can we even still say we have property rights, when this is our reality? We’re not “losing our rights” we’re straight up already living in a neo-feudal system. Wake the hell up, people.

The big reason they want to junk it is because the A-10 isn't sexy. I'm not joking. The brass has been trying to get rid of the platform for decades now because it's not sleek and sexy like a F-16.

Because the A-10 is unloved by brass, they haven't been updating it and building up the re-supply pipeline for parts and upgrades.

In most states, "limitation of liability" contracts do not allow the proprietor to obtain a release of claims arising out of his own negligence unless "magic language" is used that specifically states that those claims are being released. Releases which purport to release claims arising out of reckless or intentional conduct are generally against public policy and are not enforceable.

Had a good design - sloped armor that made it more effective per pound of material. And the Soviets realized that it doesn't make sense for a tank to last forever, they break down even without combat.

The Sherman gets a lot of undeserved crap but it was well designed. Since you couldn't ship it back across the ocean it had to be reliable and easily field repairable, which it was.

313 Again, this proves my position that ad companies do not make advertisements to sell your product. They are not in the business of selling your product.

They are in the business of selling their ad agency. They are in the business of getting people to hire them to do ads and get awards, which drives more business to them. Whether you get any more sales or not is irrelevant.

Yeah that right to choose and self destiny and subjective belief in your personal identity only goes one direction for these lunatics.

ROVs are continuing to map the area , 1600 feet off the bow of the Titanic where there is no debris from the Titanic itself.

I stand corrected. That movie had a big box office, and I heard good stuff about it. Usually, movies make 75 quintillion dollars or whatever, and everyone just says how much it sucks. It's an odd market.

431 It might have a tough time in a modern war situation with drones and air defense, but one of the reasons Russia is doing well is that they kept building simple and reliable things that work as well as new toys and enough of them to make a difference.

Doing well. With overwhelming manpower and equipment numerical advantage they are maintaining a line they held by flooding the river to halt Ukraine's supposed southern advance.

Russian equipment has not been generally maintained well and is reportedly breaking down as regularly as a Maricopa County GOP friendly polling place voting machine. They always have very strong artillery for sure. And they command the air due to that numerical thing again, which has really allowed their copter armor column killers make mincemeat of Uke armor advances.

But Russia's military is garbage, we didn't think they were but now know different, and so is China's. If we can get a new GOP president - a big if I know - they can fire all the woke generals so guys will want to join the armed forces again. If we won't do that it won't matter what equipment we have, there won't be anyone to use it.

Even a young child may do this job and make money because it is so simple to complete and has higher pay than typical office occupations.
