48 The French built great canons. In fact the US used those canons with great success in WWI.
I think it was a team of 8 canons and maybe each canon had a matching wagon.
They could keep a round going every 30 seconds or so by resting 1 of the 8 to keep them from melting down.

As for art...Don't like. It's ugly and drab. It's only vaguely reminiscent of "artillery" in the same sense that there's a man in the moon. You can see it if you squint really, really hard.

121 The French 75 mm field gun was a quick-firing field artillery piece adopted in March 1898. Its official French designation was: Matériel de 75 mm Mle 1897. It was commonly known as the French 75, simply the 75 and Soixante-Quinze (French for "seventy-five"). The French 75 was designed as an anti-personnel weapon system for delivering large volumes of time-fused shrapnel shells on enemy troops advancing in the open. After 1915 and the onset of trench warfare, other types of battlefield use demanding impact-detonated high-explosive shells prevailed. By 1918 the 75s became the main agents of delivery for toxic gas shells.

The Germans took over Lvov, recently conquered by the Soviets in their invasion of Poland. As the Russians retreated, the NKVD massacred the inmates in the prisons. A medical student described one scene:

"From the courtyard, doors led to a large space, filled from top to bottom with corpses. The bottom ones were still warm. The victims were between 15 and 60 years old, but most were 20-35 years old. They laid in various poses, with open eyes and masks of terror on their faces. Among them were many women. On the left wall, three men were crucified, barely covered by clothing from their shoulders, with severed male organs. Underneath them on the floor in half-sitting, leaning positions – two nuns with those organs in their mouths. The victims of the NKVD's sadism were killed with a shot in the mouth or the back of the head. But most were stabbed in the stomach with a bayonet. Some were naked or almost naked, others in decent street clothes. One man was in a tie, mostly likely just arrested."

The isolationists before the World Wars get a bad rap. They were quite rightly concerned that involvement in European wars would entangle the US in Europe's unsavory politics.

They were more right than the CPUSA, which was anti-fascist, then anti-war between August, 1939 and June, 1941, then screaming for a Second Front we couldn't have possibly launched at the time.

I placed a small order with a PA company on 6/7. They sent me a UPS tracking number. "Label Created," said the website, and continued to say so with no updates all last week despite an estimated arrival date of 6/15. Turns out it arrived via USPS at my mail room on 6/12, but somebody there keyed it in as being from Am*zon (it wasn't), and then they delayed bringing it over until 6/20.

I had a pair of pants from Amazon that went through USPS

The Post Office refused to deliver it though claiming an animal stopped them in the message they sent to Amazon. I was home the whole day and I don't have pets.

Anyway, I called the Post Office and they had no idea what I was talking about - the pants would show up tomorrow.

And...this repeated for about a week. I found out how to get the shift manager though and started pestering her. And...after two days of that the pants showed up. Bureaucracy in action!

So, last night I watched The Collector where Terrence Stamp has a moment where he rails against Cubism and Catcher in the Rye as both indecent, unreflective of the real world, and only popular because authorities deemed them good.

I believe both cubism and brutalism mark the point where art ceased trying to be "popular" or beautiful, and instead began striving to cater to a corrupt and narcisstic elite that had contempt for what "average" people thought or liked.

Which is why all they were capable of was crap.

I honestly believe, since she had connections and her family had money, that at every point in her education she had paid stand-ins go to class for her and take her tests - and yes, especially in law school.
