Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Flash (They/Them) Bombs; Disney/Pixar's Elemental Also CrashesIt had been projected to open at $140 million domestic a few weeks ago. Just before release, that was chopped in half to $70 million domestic, which itself would have been a failure for a movie costing $250 million or more. Actual first weekend take? 55 million. A Disney news analyst, WDW_Pro, said the film will be one of the costliest failures of all time, and may lose $300 million. Disney Pixar released the cartoon Elemental as counter-programming. It failed to counter-program. People largely just decided to sit out this stinker of a movie weekend. Disney Pixar's latest disaster made only $29 million, not even reaching the very low $31-41 million opening that had been projected."The Flash," a superhero adventure starring Ezra Miller, emerged victorious over Pixar's "Elemental" in a battle of box office lightweights. This weekend's two new releases were once expected to ignite the summer blockbuster season; instead, both entirely missed the mark. "The Flash" stumbled with $55 million and "Elemental" collected just $29.5 million in their respective debuts. Both films fell short of already-low expectations. Worse, they were pricy endeavors, costing $200 million to make and roughly $100 million to market, so they are shaping up to be huge disappointments in their theatrical runs.Elemental is now Pixar's biggest bomb, opening even lower than its previous bigger bomb, The Good Dinosaur. (Which I saw half of -- I don't understand why it was a bomb, it was really cute and touching.) But there's no sugar-coating the debut of "Elemental," which landed by far the worst start in modern history for Pixar, ranking below some of its more forgettable attempts like 2015's "The Good Dinosaur" ($39 million) and 2020's "Onward" ($39 million). The animation empire behind "Toy Story," "Up" and "Ratatouille" hasn't been able to rebound from the pandemic, when several of its titles were sent directly to Disney+ and family audiences were trained to expect those movies at home. It's been a difficult market for films with original stories like "Elemental," which revolves around the relationship between the two seemingly different elements of fire and water.Great, another 100 minute lecture about "diversity" and race relations. It just never gets old. Ever. And movie prices have inflated by almost 2x since The Good Dinosaur, so half as many people bought tickets to Elemental. BTW, Pink News claims that one of the child characters in Elemental is non-binary. (Link to Breitbart.) I haven't seen the latest Disney Groomer Offering so I can't confirm that -- but Disney personnel have bragged of sneaking their "not-so-secret gay agenda" into every film, no matter how young the target audience. Hollywood "journalists" are finally being forced to notice: Disney is in trouble. The speculation is that Pixar will have to make cheaper movies, and will probably not even survive as its own unit. It will likely be merged with the also-failing Disney Animation studio. They'll share staff and the name "Pixar" will just be attached to half of the cartoons, "Disney Animation" to the other half. "The Flash" reportedly has CGI so bad it looks like it came from the early 2000s. Most likely reason: They realized they had a bomb on their hands and gave the order to do no further work. Just rush these unfinished, wonky special effects out to the theaters to try to lose as little money as possible. You may wonder why DC didn't just cancel The Flash and get a tax write-off from it, as they did with Batgirl? Either Valiant Renegade or WDW_Pro explained why they didn't: because they had already pre-sold the foreign rights for The Flash, and so they were legally obligated to go through with the release. Otherwise, they speculate, Discovery Warner would indeed have just burned the film of the Flash and used the costs to reduce their tax bill. (Batgirl was just going to be an HBO Max release, so there was no pre-sale of foreign distribution rights.) And on the horizon: the coming disaster, Indiana Jones and the Kathleen Kennedy Self-Insert. A week ago I mentioned Doomcock's and Kamran Pasha's rumor that Disney might try to sell Lucasfilm. WDW_Pro had a good reason for why that can never happen: Right now, investors all kind of know that Disney is in trouble but don't know-know it. If Disney were to sell Lucasfilm, which would have to be at a loss, suddenly they would have actual proof that Disney had run Lucasfilm into the ground. Yes, they kinda knew this, but if Lucasfilm sold for $1.5 billion, down from its original $4.05 billion price, investors would know-know it. And then they would also consider that Pixar, bought for $7.4 billion, has also been run into the ground, the MCU, bought for $4 billion, is also producing very "meh" movies too. And what has Disney done with its $70 billion purchase, Fox Studios? Almost nothing. So the moment Disney confirms that LucasFilm is now worth less than half than what they paid for it, investors begin figuring that these other pricey purchases are also probably worth less than half of what Disney paid for them, and Disney's share value plummets on this new information. So selling LucasFilm for $1.5 billion would probably wipe out $10 billion of Disney's share value. That means that Disney has to hold on to all of these purchases just to hide their real (greatly diminished) value from the market.

The overall problem at the box office, generally, is that there is no compelling reason to see most movies at the cineplex anymore.
Most people, not me, already have either a streaming service or two or can see these films via alternate means. Also, superhero movie fatigue is a real and growing issue for these companies, and when you intentionally start to queer these movies, you're going to drive away all but the psychopath's and maniacs. So I took my kid to see the Flash (I know) and it actually had decent parts. Mainly just seeing Michael Keaton as Batman again. As far as comic book movies go, it was above average. But I wouldn't tell anyone to see it in theaters.
But aside from Ezra's crazy legal problems, he's like the most annoying person ever. Just terribly miscast. Even before I knew anything about him I wanted to wring his neck. There's a law of business that these "experts" have all forgotten. The customer is always right. Not in the sense of the common misinterpretation - this doesn't mean that the Karen at the retail counter demanding free products, an apology, and a pony should get what she wants.
This means that your customer is right about what they want from your product, and you, as an enterprise, will find the most success by giving them the product that best fits their needs and wants. All of these people have convinced themselves that they are "tastemakers" and can condition people to want the product they want to make. You can make a speculative product and see wild success, but that requires understanding your customer, and anticipating needs and wants they didn't know they had. If you look down on your customer, and see them as a subhuman in need of punishment, don't be surprised when they don't enthusiastically line up and pay for the paddle. Somewhat overlooked, especially for Pixar, the population bust in the target audience. My family (me, my wife and 4 kids) were certainly the target audience for Pixar movies. My oldest is 23 and youngest is 11. So we had kids near the entire time of the golden years of Pixar. I think the last that they saw in theaters was Toy Story 4. As we age, the chances of us paying to see a Pixar movie is near zero.
Ironically the last three movies we saw were all animation: Puss In Boots, Super Mario and Spiderverse. The Super Mario movie we only saw because we spent years playing the game and there was just no way we were going to miss the movie. The other two movies are much more adult oriented. Disney stock is selling for a hair over $91, about 41 times it's most recent year of earnings. The market generally sells for about 23 times, on average over the last thirty years.
If Disney were valued at the market PE, the stock would sell for $50 a share, a 44% drop from todays price. But, it may be worth much less than $50 per share, once you consider the uniform failure of these Iger-era acquisitions. If you own Disney, you might consider selling the stock. I was the head of IT for a post production graphics company, it takes hundreds of people and an extensive, gargantuan infrastructure to make CGI for motion pictures, even bad CGI. You can control costs, if the movie makers have a concrete vision, but a lot of these movies have so many chefs that there is no concrete direction so, spend a lot of time making elements, doing tests, rendering a fuckload of images that ultimately will never be used in the final product. Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead! at June 19, 2023 04:52 PM (eYoxG) It will, actually, and probably in less than ten years at the current rate of progress. You'll save time on voice acting (and time is money) - just pay the voice actor for a few lines and likeness rights, and deepfake technology will take care of the rest.
Posted by: Thomas Bender at June 19, 2023 04:44 PM (up/3i) -------------- I said once before there are literally thousands of good to great movies that I've never seen before available for free or nearly free to watch at home. I'm pretty sure every large scale investor can read the tea leaves and realize that Lucasfilm and Pixar have been run into the ground and have a much reduced value. Right now I don't think Disney would get 1/4 of what they paid for Lucasfilm, and maybe about 1/2 what they got for Pixar (which does have a lot of technical ability). Add to those messes the upcoming Hulu payout and the decreased attendance of the parks (except FL) and Disney may be fubar

I think the term "historic" is overused at this point. Or an excuse for extremism in politics/art/etc. Either way, none of it is actually historic, as opposed to, say, storming a beach in Normandy against impossible odds or liberating a concentration camp. Those things strike me as historic. Not a freak character in an animated film.

I still don't understand why it costs so much money to make what is basically a cgi movie.
*************** I bet part of it is the constant rewrites. From what I understand movies used to be storyboarded so you had a clear direction and script of how to put the movie together, which cuts down on expenses and bloat. Nowadays studios throw darts against the wall and rewrite scenes and the scripts so many times it effectively costs the price of three movies just to make one. It's hard to do, especially for this young audience. But remember folks, there was a time where Fahrenheit 451 was considered alternative. As was Starship Troopers. Many of you view this through a lens of "the current authority is good". A warped Reagan / Rockwell / Kinkaid frosted glow. My point being, the current younger generations are honestly less counter-culture than you were. They're more conformist. You simply do not like how they conform. Shall we go through the list of "all the great novels" that were not appreciated in their time ? Hell - The Great Gatsby was a public school favorite precisely because it pillories the wealthy ruling class of the time. It was not so warmly received when it rolled off the presses. The people making these movies don't have a whole lot to reference, and life experience in interesting things is down a lot. William Shakespeare just dialed in from a Ouija board and said you can go f*** yourself.
Again, memories around here are purposefully short. I loved Shakespeare, other than Midsummer Night's Dream, in high school. Wasn't one of those dicks that wanted to be in drama. But I know a good story when I read one. Julius Caesar ? All fame is fleeting, trust no one, and the State can turn on you on a dime. Macbeth ? Sometimes, we find ourselves in situations where there is no right choice and we're all creepy. Romeo and Juliet ? Great play - turns out, we're all just kind of along for the ride depending on the choices of those around us. Get this ... none of those were very popular amongst my Early Boomer and Silent elders going to church three times a week. Taught the wrong lessons. No wonder my public school teachers loved them so much and pushed them so hard. Posted by: Shame On Me at June 19, 2023 05:29 PM (vBjG4) 188

Ironically, it has never been cheaper for an individual to make a movie. Technology has lowered the cost of entry. Platforms like YouTube aren't necessarily ideal for 2+ hour long-form, but have been accessible for a lot of 20 minute short form work. I'd rather watch several free and interesting 20 minute shorts than sit in a theater for a long-form and expensive lecture.

What's going to make these movies hurt Disney even more is how they may have a period in the not too distant future, where they don't have content due to the writers strike and possible SAG strike, so having to dump two high dollar movies at once, and have them both fail, has to be an even bigger dick punch.
Hilariously there was an article out just the other day that was titled something along the line of "Disney's big win over DeSantis" which was actually nothing more than a poll, which seemed more biased than ever, and is proven to be biased based on how much Disney is shitting the bed. When Pixar was bought by Disney, its Disney-fication was inevitable. I saw signs of this in movies like "Brave", which could have been really good, but instead went for cheap laughs - and featured the first of a seemingly endless series of Strong Female Characters. Nearly all of the creative minds from Pixar's golden age are gone; Pete Docter is still there, but John Lasseter, Brad Bird, and most of the others are gone, replaced by mediocrities who share the Disney worldview. Alas. They made some damn good movies in their heyday.
